This book is one of my all time favourites. I alternated between reading the physical copy and listening to the audio version (when I was doing chores around the house or out and about walking) because I didn’t wanna put it down. The man who did the audio version was phenomenal and sounded to me like he pronounced all the Spanish words authentically. Amazing book 🤩🤩🤩
I would love to reread this book in audio form! Just from hearing you talk about it sounds amazing! I am so glad that you liked this book too =) Have you read any of the others in the series?
I got this book about four years ago and kept putting off reading it because I didn't expect it to be very interesting. I ended up finishing it in just one week, and now it's become one of my favourite books. Thanks for the amazing review!
The thing with the names comes from the original language. We non Spanish could confuse names that to Spanish speakers are quite different. As for names in Spanish try 100 years of solitude where I kept asking myself who ! THAT book changed my life, it made me see everything through magical eyes.
That is very true! The names are probably very different to Spanish speakers. I would probably keep a chart for 100 years of Solitude haha it sounds like I would be confused quickly! I want to read it someday soon though.
My grandad being of Spanish origin gave me this book shortly before he died, having read this book I honestly was taken aback by how immersive the story is and it is my all time favourite book. One that will be passed down my family for generations to come!
Sounds like such a brilliant book! 1940s, dark, finding out about a book, sounds like a story which is right up my alley. I love atmospheric mysteries!
I'm just about done. I've also loved it so much. I looked to see what was available for reviews and chose yours because it said no spoilers. I have 50 pages left and I don't want it to end!
I am very slowly reading through his books, as I know there is a limited amount of them. I just started reading the third book in this series this week!
It isn't a book for everyone! It isn't very fast paced and it is quite atmospheric. If that isn't your thing, I would say stop and read something that you will enjoy =)
It starts to get so good after about 100 pages. I wouldn’t give up. There’s so many twists and turns and you feel immersed in an infatuation of uncovering information along with Daniel. I listened to the audiobook which I really liked because of all of the pronunciation of places and people, and vivid dialogue or characters.
@@jennifersherborne8133 exactly it gets better after the 100 page. I enjoyed it a lot. Now the problem now is I”m not able to find something to read on the same level of the Shadow of the wind!! The Shadow of the Wind had sat the bar high!!
Great video 👍 I am looking for a copy of this book. Here in Korea i have to order from overseas. Could u tell me if this edition has a flexible spine? since I can't stand book spine cracks..^^
Thank you! And yes, it has a very flexible spine! I could easily have it open on the table without holding it down with my hands. I think that's part of why I had such a good experience reading this haha
I read this a few years ago and then binged the rest of his books. I am currently stuck on the last book in the Labyrinth series because when it's over I will miss them ! I am currently an hour away from the end of the Audiobook version which makes me see even more in the story than when I read it. It is a 14+ hour long audio ! Here on YT.
Ooh I am glad you have been enjoying the entire series! I am going to pick up the third one this month but I feel the same way. I don't want them to end! I should listen to the audiobook while I read, that could be a fun experience if you say the audio makes you see the story even more =)
@@WellTraveledBooks I thought it was boring and overwritten and that the protagonist was a creep! I only finished it because it was for a buddy read ^_^
@@danecobain Oh no! I have heard that critique before, I think either the writing works or doesn't for someone. And i can see the protagonist being a creep, maybe it depends on how someone interprets it? Not sure!
@@WellTraveledBooks It was the bit where he broke into his "love interest's" house and snuck into her bedroom, then got upset because she was having sex with the fiance that he knew that she had that got me. And then his dad encourage him to try to break them up. At least, that's what I seem to recall, it's been a while to be fair!

I am so happy to hear you enjoyed it! Sometimes we just need to be in the right mindset to read a book and I am happy to hear that you got there =)

My Zafón-loving heart is beaming with joy! But this review…Ugh, just *chef’s kiss!* 🥰
Thank you for introducing me to him! Now you'll get to continue to hear me gush while I read the rest of the series! =)
I’m so so excited to read this. It’s been on my tbr for a long time. I need to finally pick it up!
Yes yes yes! Let me know how you like it once you get around to it =)

It really does feel like the perfect book to pass along within the generations! That is so special of your grandad =)
Mysteries aren't usually my first pick, but the spookiness and bookshop really intrigues me!!
Ditto to that! I don't gravitate to mysteries but this one just entranced me from the very beginning.

You are right, I think it is something that you would really enjoy! =D
It kind of reminds me of the Maltese Falcon if you’ve ever read that? Not necessarily about a book, but same atmospheric mystery regarding an object.
@@Roma_eterna I haven't, but I watched the old film! I should read the Maltese Falcon!

Yaay! I hope that you were able to finish it and continued to enjoy it! =D It really is a book that feels incredibly magical.
It’s a tetralogy so plenty more to go at!
I would love to see what you think of the others. Zafon is my favorite author and he has so many more outside of this specific series.

Just finished this book, so good. Loved Fermin and Daniel's relationship.
i am so glad you liked it! their relationship was super special. are you planning on reading the rest of the series?
@@WellTraveledBooks yes, actually I've just picked up Labrynth today to start, have you read it?
Just finished this book, and it was an amazing experience.
I am so happy that you enjoyed it too!
I loved this book as well even though I would get lost sometimes. At the time I read it the writing seemed dense but I couldn't give up lol.
Haha it feels so gripping that it is hard to give up! I am so glad to hear you enjoyed it
Great review, I picked up this book today and couldn't put it down. Love it, surprised it's not made into a movie.
I never actually thought about that! It is the perfect book to be made into a movie. Maybe one day.
@@WellTraveledBooks especially a series(with the 4 books). You should start a petition aha
Extraordinary novel. Thanks!!

It really is!
I'm in chapter 8 and so far finding dragging....... Not sure should I gave up!
