SUSHI?!? 😆
oh my...i am being appealed to on TT for this type of book!! lol I like the intention, but the 'profiting-off--the-the-of-the-world' (for affiliate sales) vibes were a bit ick. Very pretty though!
😊
🌿Joined on StoryGraph! Checking out the Graphics So Exciting🍄
What My Bones Know is so goooood!
This is your mind on plants I think is a must read for me, I fear !!!
Lots of good looking books. I'm not sure why I haven't read a Pollan book yet lol, need to though. Less is More is one I should read now that I know of it as well. Great vid!
THE GDP Fallacy!!! So hard to break through people's assumptions about this in conversation :/ Great round-up of solid book! Yay for 2025 reading! <3
Don't know if I could read Unwell Women--judging from my reaction to Body Keeps the Score. :/
Ooh, I wonder if the Fantastic Fungi book is related to the FF Netflix documentary?
Ahhh, 84 Charing Cross! Loved it so much. And the care packages! Loved the journey. <3
I should put chapters in our video so people can skip forward when you're gone, shouldn't I? 😅
Don’t feel bad about your old phone. I’m on my 3rd iPhone 6s+ - great camera, and it still has the earbud jack. I don’t need to run a corporation on it, so it still works for me… though probably upgrading in the next year or so. The video looks fine! 🥸
😊
Women talking nonfiction on BookTube - who woulda thunk… thank you! 🥸
I read the Readers Digest condensed version of Charles Dickens "Oliver Twist" it's in my collection of Readers Digest condensed books the hardbound copies. I have about 15 of these books each with three condensed works of literature. I enjoy my books.
Basic values should not be for or against capitalism. Basic values involve _value for money._ And buying things that are of genuine need, rather than genuine whim. If people are thinking consumerism is a way of life, an option, I can only say they are adhering to a very hollow ideology. Hear me out. As a problem, it derives from human nature that evolved from evolved monkeys towards modern hunter gatherers. We feel a nice pleasant sense of reward when we buy (get) something, whether we really need it or not. That is not the fault of capitalism but human nature and human physiology.
I buy books from the charity shop, four for a pound! In fact I buy most things from charity shops - clothes, furniture, appliances like my slow cooker and bread maker were dirt cheap compared to buying new. I've been doing this for years now as I realised we are all so programmed and brainwashed by ads and the media to buy more and more stuff to try and make us feel better. I'm also cutting back on social media and my mental health is much better as most of it is divisive and negative, no twitter, no facebook, no tiktok.
Very excited! This is going to be my first year diving into the challenge.
Yess! I am so excited to see what you decide to read =D You always have such great choices!
This sounds really interesting, though I'm not on Storygraph. For the challenge/bingo card, would novels count for all of those prompts? Many of your examples were nonfiction, which I don't read as much of as fiction. But if fiction counts, I can think of lots of books I have that would fit!
Yes novels also count! Any book that fits within the prompts is ok =) It is easier for me to find non-fiction, but I always throw in some novels in there as well! And I think you should be able to access the Storygraph page to see the prompts listed out, even if you don't have an account. If not, there is a link below the video too to have access to the bingo board =) So excited to have you participate!
So excited!! 💛🧡❤💜💙💚
Me tooo! <3
Thanks for sharing your favourites! I read about 40% nonfiction too. My favourite of 2024 is The Age of Insecurity by Astra Taylor. I’ve added Consumed to my TBR. I don’t know how I missed that one because I am always on the lookout for insightful documentation on the textile industry. Other writers on this topic include Tansy E Hoskins, Virginia Postrel, Sofi Thanhauser, Maxine Bedat, Elizabeth Cline and Dana Thomas.
I think you will really enjoy Consumed if it's a topic you are interested in! And thank you for all the recs! I will check some of those authors out =)
Already very low buy. Learning about minimalism, which is more a lifestyle than simply decluttering.
Minimalism is awesome! The ethos behind minimalism is great I think =) And yes, decluttering, especially just to replace those items, is for sure not minimalistic :)
😊
Excited to join in again and make it more of a concentrated focus this time around!
Yes me too! I wasn't able to finish all the prompts for 2024, but hopeful for this year =)
I *could* send you my very exciting published paper on water negotiations in the La Plata basin from grad school, would that entice?? 😂
can you imagine if that is what gets me to love water writing?!
@@WellTraveledBooks
YES, I am so excited!!
me too!
Dostoyevski and Wilde are my favourate writers ❤
I cannot wait to try Wilde!
I'm aiming to do a books low buy in 2025. I'm putting away £1 a week to buy classics from the Macmillan collector's library range, so I'll probably buy no more than 4 during the year. I'm also doing a stationery low buy and I'm being far more mindful of the groceries i buy. Thanks for the video and a happy and peaceful 2025 to you.
This is fantastic to hear! I think one pound a week is a great way to slowly save up for what you want, and to keep yourself being mindful about consumption. I used to looove stationary so much and went on a no buy for it a few years ago too =)
Stopt buying books a long time ago to many ways to get them free
Yes =) Many ways to read for free!
Great vid and discussions on some important books. Nonfiction definitlely meeds more likelight haha
Yes it does! I am so glad channels like yours exist to give non-fic some love too =)
It's called being frugal and people have been doing it for years. You're not special.
nobody said i was special =)
yes she is
I consider In the Dream House non-fiction, and it made my favorites the year I read it. I'm saving What My Bones Know for when I'm in a really great head-space because it's going to be a tough one I think.
I think it's verrry smart to save what my bones know for when you are ready for it because it is such a tough and intense read. i am so glad to hear that you also enjoyed in the dream house!
Consumed was also my favorite non-fiction of 2024! I'm adding Bodies Under Siege to my list. For 2025 I'd like to read How to Be an Intersectional Environmentalist and Cobalt Red.
Yay so glad to hear! Intersectional Environmentalist by Leah Thomas? I have read it too =D
@@WellTraveledBooks That's the one!
Thanks for featuring more non-fiction talk and love within the booktube world! I love non-fiction too and it pretty much constitutes half of all my reading and I love to see more attention being paid to it on booktube. I've never really done the new year's resolutions thing but I should really try and watch your channel more this year!
Yess another non-fiction lover! It does not get the love it deserves around booktube so i am always happy to give it a little more light =) And yes, that sounds like a great new years resolution! ;)
Catch 22 is my favorite book of all time! The plot is not linear which is confusing but to me, its actually part of the message of the book. It takes a while to start understanding the flow for plot readers but I can pick up any chapter and read the hyjinx and its just absolutely hilarious. It also a book that i can re-read throughout life and find an absurd truth about real life.
This makes me feel as though I will either love or hate this book! I really hope that I end up liking it because it seems so fascinating to me. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
I rated 6 non-fic books 5 stars this year, and I realized 3 were ones I read for Climathon - Valley of the Birdtail (Connection), Ultra-Processed People (Food), and The Quickening (Other Continent/Antarctica). The other three were Caliban and the Witch, February 1933: Winter of Literature, and Say Nothing.
Sounds like Climathon picks are working out well for you =D I really need to pick up Ultra-Processed People this year!
My favorite nonfiction this year was The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace ..BUT I think you would really like, if you haven't read it yet, is Know My Name: A Memoir. I would listen to it as her victim impact statement in court is astounding.
You hit my reading taste on the head! I adored Know My Name, it was in my top five non-fiction in the year that I read it =D
😊
My favorite nonfiction reads this year: Just Kids by Patti Smith & The Courage to be Disliked. Looking forward to reading some of the books mentioned next year!
I still need to get to The Courage to be Disliked! I read Just Kids a few years ago by Patti Smith and it did not hit for me =( But I would like to try some of her other books in the future.
Excellent discussion of these books. I’ve added several to my list of books to find in 2025. Thank you.
I am glad to hear that some resonated with you! =)
And you want to replace capitolism with what? Communism?
You look stupid ❤
me decreasing my consumption seems like a far cry from me promoting communism tbh <3
You don’t even know how to spell it, genius.
Let's all eat the same borscht and wear the same clothes for a year like bolsheviks.
As long as I’m not one of the millions of people who will starve to death, that sounds really nice.
I do usually wear the same clothes for a year, seems pretty sustainable to me. And I am not sure how me talking about decreasing my consumption is linked to the bolsheviks?
Carry on being a good little consumer to keep the corporations happy.
Cold Comfort Farm is an easy read and offers a satirical wink at the "gothic" novels like Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. Read it as a break from heavier books.
This is great to know! Thank you for telling me =) Makes me a little more excited to pick it up =)
I'm in. End this shit. Now
I just discovered your channel and really enjoyed this vlog! I recently read consumed by aja barber and enjoyed it a lot too. Definitely a book I will recommend to friends. Excited to see more of your videos now :)
Yaay I am so glad! Consumed is really such a great book and I wish more people would know about it! Thank you for the kind words =)
I vote for The Grapes of Wrath!
i am so excited to get to it, hopefully soon!
Yes. I’m planning to do a low buy year. Mainly for reasons of anti-consumerism/ anti-capitalism motivations. I already thrift most of what I buy, but I still am in the habit of shopping/thrifting because I’m bored, and I want to reset my mindset. I also intend to cut WAY back on eating out, for budget and health reasons. I have already done this for most of December. It’s amazing how once you break the habit, it becomes much easier to maintain.
YES! This idea of thrifting cause we are bored, something I also need to remind myself of and get out of doing. It feels less wasteful because it is secondhand, but it is still unnecessary consumption. I love the idea of cutting back on eating out =) The health and budget impacts can be felt quite quickly a lot of the time! =) Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
yer broke, let's be honest
@@WellTraveledBooks We feel a nice pleasant sense of reward when we buy (get) something, whether we really need it or not. That is not the fault of capitalism but human nature and human physiology.
I LOVED that book, it fell off a shelf in a local caf that also served as 2nd hand bookshop at the time (now long gone) and hit me as I was browsing the shelves, it looked intrigueing, it was doorstopper brick thick which was always a bonus, and cost every last peso I had on me ($120, in 2008) at the time, but I read it over the next 3 days, could not put it down. I read it once or twice more, lent it to so many friends who also loved it, until I gave it to a friend. LOVE it. The translator, Lucia Graves, is the daugher of author Robert Graves.
I love this story =D That sounds like a well travelled book, my favourite kind! <3
