The last time I saw Emma talk about W&P, I thought there's no way I'll be able to read and especially enjoy that book but I'm so happy to report back that I did and fell head over heels in love with it. I can't thank you enough Emma
Fascinating annotation methods. Deep dives into serious novels like War and Peace offer so much more than a simple reading. Brava, Emma. Thank you for being so thorough and enthusiastic. You're inspiring so many of us to dive in and explore, to take our time and discover.
hahha I want to start reading it, but although I usually get my books from the library I'm gonna wanna buy this one because of time pressure and my conviction that this is a book I won't be done with an entire lifetime
I found your channel because I was looking for material on youtube that was about War and Peace. I loved the reading vlogs about War and Peace and I loved the book itself. It’s more than just a book to me. It is an antidepressant, a work of art and an amazing experience.
Lol “do I wanna reread War and peace? No, don’t do it”. Emma, you are the only person who can make me want to read that book! ❤ Videos like these are a whole different thing, thank you for being so inspiring in many ways! Like actually studying harder or reading different books that are out of your comfort zone, things I did add to my day to day life, I love your videos!!
God, I've been reading it for several months now (hugely inspired by your and Carolyn videos). And today I have 20 pages left, because I was saving it to read this evening, and there's this video! That was A JOURNEY indeed, and I annotated it quite heavily as well. Thank you so-so much for the inspiration to read this book, I am so happy I did it ❤
@@Tania.atlasinajar Yep! Hugo's description of the Battle of Waterloo inspired the depictions of famous battles in W&P. Just like Madame Bovary inspired Anna Karenina

After suffering through that book, and then getting to his last essay on the meaning of history, ect., I was ready to throw the book across the room- I thought tacking that big essay on at the end was a cheap high for Mr T. That was first read, then I read it again five years later, it was still kinda tough, but I did it, every last word ! Then, at 67 yrs. Old, about two years ago I picked it up and decided to leave my emotions out of it. I read it slowly, carefully, and soon I began to enjoy it ! I thought I must be coming down with a cold, or something. And now... now I look forward to read it again. Most importantly: don't get mad at it, let it be what it is. i can't wait to learn more about choosing relevant themes to track in annotation when i start my lit studies...i suck at picking them, especially if i've never read the novel i'm annotating and going in blind. lovely video as always, emma!
your annotations are so wonderful!!! seeing that you just finished Grendel in goodreads has brought me so much joy, it is one of my favorite books and it changed my life. I am so glad that you gave it 5 stars, it deserves more praise. .
In the 90s, I only managed to read one-third of W&P due to my youthful mindset of having no time for such a masterpiece. However, I made a promise to return to it later in life. Unfortunately, my life became entangled with, ironically, the details of war as an Iraqi, preventing me from fulfilling my promise until recently. At the age of 48, I finally finished reading it and can attest that it was worth every second spent.
beautifully anotated. i struggled so much with the war sections and thrived in the peace sections, when the characters were philosophical and discussed war, peace, love, life, etc.
@emmiereads More videos like this??? Ohh! YES PLEASE EMMA ☺️ Annotating videos are just so soothing to watch, and motivates me more to read and annotate.♥️
I've never made it through, but now I'm inspired! Yet another reason to admire Emma and her Great Book stamina! I just know some of it through Happy New Year, Charlie Brown when he has to read it over Christmas Break and write a book report, lol.
Thank you very much for this - it's fascinating to see your approach to reading this novel. I started reading W&P at the beginning of the year and finished Volume II this morning. We've highlighted many of the same points. I find Tolstoy very readable, much more so than I would have anticipated, and you've given me some ideas to explore during the remainder of the work, so thank you!

I've got two copies of war and peace. The stuff I got out of it was mostly around the fighting, particulalry around the artillery. The point about the toughest soldiers being at the front and the cowards and shirkers at the back of the army was a bit of a revelation. Its been donkeys since I read it. try making small goals for yourself. like reading 50 pages a day(obviously can read more but just having that as your main goal). you’ll slowly eat at it and not even notice how far you’ve gone into the book. hope this helps!
