    On one side we have those saying they’re too similar to Led Zeppelin’s sound, that they’re boring, blatant rip-offs and have yet to bring anything new to the table. On the other side we have those who are happy to have a band reviving the hard rock sound of the 70s, bringing it to a new generation of listeners and into a market that’s oversaturated with R&B and hip hop.
    Regardless of which side you sit on, Greta Van Fleet’s singles are quickly gaining them fans, see them climbing rock charts and have them selling out shows -- all of this and the band have yet to release a full debut record.
    This video essay explores Greta Van Fleet’s recent rise in popularity, the band members, their EP Black Smoke Rising and their double EP From the Fires. I also reflect on bands of the past that have been tapped for sounding too much like Led Zeppelin, including: Rush, Billy Squier, Kingdom Come, Wolfmother and Rival Sons. But even Led Zeppelin have been known to steal lyrics and riffs from artists without crediting them.

      Elijah Wilkes I don’t think that’s accurate. Sure, they covered some old blues songs and drew influences from lots of places but zeppelin did make it original and, later, wrote some very original music. So far, all I’ve seen these kids do is shamelessly rip them off. Look at how they dress. Look at the frontman’s moves... they sound okay, and I’m sure that they have a great future. They just need a few years and some life experiences to bring out some cool material.

      Billy Cobb Yeah, like Garth Brooks etc. Btw, in N.O., there was a band named Zebra (3 members & yes they played Rush!) whom was really great covering Zeppelin. Unfortunately, the ‘80’s were filled with hair metal and they were kind of dated. They have videos on RUclips of original songs that were on MTV.

      Ginny What He doesn’t have Plant’s thang. God he was hot and I don’t even care for Zeppelin (except Physical Graffiti & 3 songs from III). The guys in GVF are boys, not men. They’ll never have the charisma of Zeppelin plus, given the fact that although Zeppelin copied (and, in some cases stole), they did change a lot in ‘70’s rock. The people responded to them even though critics didn’t. They had “IT”. GVF doesn’t. They are also lacking the type of audience that loved Zeppelin. Hell, I’d love to have seen them myself (I loved tripping whilst watching “The Song Remains The Same” but, I can’t imagine kids today who are crazy over Beiber, Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, KK... have the same love of blues & hard rock like those from the late ‘60’s - ‘70’s, Zeppelin’s heyday. The video I saw of GVF live had the audience sitting in their seats, 1 or 2 tapping their feet. Why weren’t they dancing & having fun?

      I can respect your opinion, but mine definitely differs. Nobody can put on a show like Floyd....and maaaaybe Slayer.
      Unless you're at a Grateful Dead show that is.....
      Again, just my opinion....but to put them above Pink Floyd is blasphemous.... especially since they're new, meaning they do not have a fraction of the money it takes to get the gear it would take to even be on Floyd's radar as far as sound quality goes, and they haven't even touched the surface of the talent found in every Pink Floyd album ever released.. No way they sounded better dude.
      It had to have been the acid making you think that 😉
      Or the fact that Redrock has technology built into it's amphitheater to prioritize sound quality that didn't exist when you saw Floyd last...and that's not meant to be an insult, I'm only a couple years under you. It's just an unfortunate fact, technology is moving at supersonic speed for the past decade or so, a lot of it falls right into the quality of music...filters, editing programs like Ableton, all the equipment really has evolved what seems like a century in well under a decade.

    For a band to be called "influential," we have to be OK with other bands being influenced by them. Copying your heroes is an essential part of developing your own style on any instrument, in any genre of music. According to jazz trumpeter Clark Terry, the process goes like this: "Imitate. Assimilate. Innovate."
    If these young guys want to play tunes with cool riffs and hot licks, then we should welcome what they have to offer . . . it's not like there's too much of that stuff in the world these days.

    Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, Pink, Whitney Houston, etc. are all as similar to one another as Plant is to Kiszka. We're used to hearing the differences in female pop voices because they are a dime a dozen and we have developed the ability to distinguish between them (with great fidelity) But when the "Plant" aesthetic has a visitor, we're not as used to that realm of vocals, e.g. high pitched squeal with rasp and slight whine on the lower end. Kiszka has a VERY different voice with VERY different techniques. He and Plant share the same foundation, but Kiszka is closer to Freddie in terms of vocal embellishment and prolonged, open vowels (operatic vibrato, yodelling etc.).

    I don't think sticking to the sound is sustainable. Look at Wolfmother, who had a very similar kind of trajectory back in 2005. Their first album was massive, but by the time their second album dropped were practically irrelevant. I think if Greta Van Fleet want to stick around for a while, they're gonna need to carve out a more unique sound for themselves.

Their second was overproduced and lacked any of the enitial energy or charm that the first album carried. I honestly feel it could be done well if shitty producers dont get their hands all over it.

      killercaos123 They might as well be a cover band tbh. Theyre that similar. Its okay to have influences but when your sound is exactly cut and paste of another bands (a band which weve all grown up on and heard dozens of their songs tons of times) it gets old real fast. When i first heard one of their songs, i literally rolled my eyes. These guys are the exact reason why rock music is dead in the mainstream right now. Because nobody in modern rock wants to move forward.

    • @cinemaslut9034
      @cinemaslut9034 6 лет назад +40

      Jackson Winkelson Unironically, yes. But you don't have to invent an entire genre to have your own identity, but at least have idk, somewhat different instrumentation or a unique singer to spice it up a little bit. These guys are basically playing pop music coated in a Led Zeppelin skin. It's so formulaic. Even Led Zeppelin, who weren't exactly the most experimental group dabbled in different genres in Houses of the Holy and Physical Graffiti. (Both of which are my favorite LZ albums because those albums were the first time they really broke free of their comfort zone and actually tried to challenge themselves by being versatile.) I'm not a psychic and don't have the answers of where rock music should go. But I do know what I like. And as far as exciting rock bands in the 2000s go, there's a Japanese band called Midori that fused hardcore punk and Jazz music together and there's really nothing else like it. That band was something new and exciting to me and I'd love to see something like that. Not necessarily jazz punk, but just something new. But most modern rock music is obsessed with revivalism. Which dont get me wrong, revivalism is okay. The post-punk and garage rock revival had some good bands come out of that scene. But is this really all you want rock to be? Rehashes of the same bands over and over again? If bands want to make throwback music, I'm all for it. But GVF are the worst example of that.

    • @Y0utubeIsFuckingHomo
      @Y0utubeIsFuckingHomo 6 лет назад +5

      Jazz Punk? What is that like? I try to listen to all genres to get well rounded but I tried to get into Punk Blues and man that shit is horrible. Alas, now that you've clarified though, I definitely agree with you. As a creator, IMO it takes more work to copy a style verbatim than to take it and make it your own. Because I theorize that the natural process in the brain is to take in the information(music in this case) and whenever you need to recall on it(like to create music) it's there, but it's filtered through your own perspective. For example: If I hear an Organ solo from the Doors when I'm 12, and I got I sit down and start playing the keyboard a year later, the Doors organ solo and a lot of other solos will float around in the subconscious as like a reference point, but the point where it becomes a conscious action is where you take that reference and repurpose it using your own skills/technic.

    • @cinemaslut9034
      @cinemaslut9034 6 лет назад +8

      Jackson Winkelson Oh yeah I have no doubt that Greta Van Fleet are talented musicians. Emulating a sound is pretty hard to do. But it's just wasted potential to me. I've never went to music for technical ability. I've always gravitated more towards creativity than skill. Math rock is one of my least favorite genres but I totally respect the musicians of those bands for their talent in guitar playing. It's just not for me. And I'm not an authority in jazz punk cause to be quite honest I've heard very little of it. It's not a style of music Europe or America generally make because our rock music was derived from blues, whereas Japan's rock music was influenced a lot by jazz. The band I mentioned earlier, Midori, is definitely my favorite band to do that style, but it's definitely not for everyone. I can totally see someone calling it trash and annoying and I get it. It's kind of had the same effect on me that Death Grips had. It sounds nothing like to them, just my initial reaction to them was similar cause listening to it for the first time can be a little jarring.

      @Y0utubeIsFuckingHomo 6 лет назад +1

      Cinema Slut Again I agree. I didn't say it was harder to copy give them praise or anything, I just brought up because it's like a waste of time, or in your words "waste of talent". While it is coop to copy your musical idols, the true greatness of art production is in the creativity, again I agree, we're on the same page here tbh. What's the best track from Midori btw? I'm gonna give em a try.

It’s not “a few high pitched screams”, he sounds like plant, and I literally said he can’t help that he sounds like Robert plant because it’s his voice, that’s not the big deal. The problem is the band behind him wants to be zeppelin. You can hear it in every song. Anyone who says otherwise is too wrapped up in their nostalgia or don’t know what they’re talking about. I mean come on, watch videos of the singer copying Robert Plants hand and body mannerisms to the T on stage. It’s pretty cut and dry. @Nathaniel Birthurth I understand where you're coming from, but I would have to respectfully disagree about originality. I think originality can be overrated sometimes, because music for most of history was passed down traditionally, and the low hanging fruit of musical innovation has already come and gone. Constantly trying to be "new" just degenerates music, and is antithetical to how music has always worked. So a band that sounds like the music their grandparents listened to isn't a bad thing in my opinion.

If you listen to their songs, and just have a good time, then i think you might actually think they have a chance. It doesnt look like they are about to rip whole bars off of anyone. Also, to your second response, how would greta be a crappier version of zepplin if most people cant tell them apart? These kids are coming up with their own songs using real instruments. it's almost besides the point, if a group of barely-20-year-olds can find success playing this "dated music", it might get more of their generation interested, and get studios investing and signing more bands like them (that's what studios do), the loop starts feeding itself. before you know it, we just might get a rock revival movement rolling.

      Singer says not Robert Plant influenced at all. He was dressing like Plant from the beginning. Hiphuggers!Thats what they called the low wasted, jean's, pants, w/flared legs at the bottom(bell bottoms, and really flared Elephant bell jeans/pants), with open vest, all chest. Kinda cool! And then that "No Plant influences" Credibility/integrity went right down the shitter with that kind of talk. He said he's more influenced by Steven Tyler, Aerosmith! LMFAO! I did hear a tune that was all Geddy Lee(Rush) vocal sound. At least the guitarist said Jimmy Page was a big influence(thumbs up, for being truthful!). They grew up(the 3 brothers) in a small town, housebound, and listened to their dads giant collection of blues records(the stuff the bands they were influenced by listened to in the 60's). Dad must be 80yrs old. I'm 50 and had a Zeppelin album at around 6yrs old. Then, my tastes evolved to Black Sabbath, Rush, Aerosmith, and by Junior high, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, then Metallica "Kill em All" release changed everything(well, it was a Metal style few bands played, heavier/faster, start/stop tightness!) which has grown and evolved. If I grew up listening to the blues from 60 years ago(they didn't have a radio?), I'd be playing the blues! And the drummer is a "friend" who plays the exact drum kit John Bonham of Zeppelin played, which was a different setup than other bands. Larger diameter bass drum, tuned a certain way. Bonham loved the sound! So a great setup for Zeppelin songs. Many songwriters would sue Greta Van Fleet, as the small part of "Highway Song", is almost note for note with a song from Zeppelin's "Physical Graffiti" album. When listening/playing music throughout a long life, you'll pick up many things. Then a very clear dejavu feeling hits you, and you know you've been here many, many times. But something's different? Oh, it's not Zeppelin?! Could have fooled me! Just give credit where credit is due, or some acknowledgement to those who influenced you. Not the guys who influenced the guys who you're listening to, but to the ones that bridged the gap between the two.

    Here we are 5 years later and I haven't heard from them at all. Are they even together?
    Great talent, However sounding like Zeppelin isn't the worst thing. You need to Wright hit songs tho No exceptions.

    Led zeppelin were so good because they revolutionised sound, greta van fleet are good but sounding like zep and being the new zep are different things.

      Cillian Reilly Zep did the same thing with the music of others as Fleet is doing with their music.

      Allen Ellsworth What are you taking about? Zeppelin was a revolution and they influenced many of next great musicians and groups.
      GVF are only a curious band and they are only good.

      Cotramjoxxx Google it they borrowed a lot from others. Which I have absolutely no problem with because I don't believe you can own sound

    • @Cotramjoxxx
      @Cotramjoxxx 6 лет назад +3

      Absolutely, but the matter is not what but how.
      Zeppelin take a lot of another groups like lyrics and progressions. But with that and his own sound changed rock music and they contributed a lot of the music nowadays.
      God! How can you deny it?

      Revolutionized 😂😂😂😂😂 I love led zeppelin-I own all of their albums... but let's be serious, they're just really good at recycling the work of black musicians.
      Don't blindly follow anyone.

      There's nothing wrong with today's music. Other than you're stuck in whatever era you want to be. I'm 48 and love tons of today's music. I also think the 80's mostly sucked. Oh, I liked some bands from the 80's but if you think I'm still sitting around listening to Motley Crue you're crazy. I'm not stuck in an era or genre for that matter.

      @Second Earth exactly ive heard him kinda take a lick jimmy would play and maybe repeat it a few times or somethin like that. Jimmys just one of a kind. I can always tell the difference between the 2 bands simply because of the guitar work

      Pop will always exist so long as there are people who like music. Glad to see a blues/hard rock revival though! Although rock is in my blood, you still have to respect other styles too. Otherwise, this revival will sound exactly like the old times, and that’s not fun, eh?

    • @use6less
      @use6less 6 лет назад +6

      They get inspired by led zep but I bet that in a few years they will find their own new sound and will blow us away. Pop is not a bad thing but it is dominated by money most out of all styles, because most people like it. Greed and manipulation with the listener is what corrupts it.

      Tony, el sudakita, Bosca, shut up stupid, Led Zeppelin is the most influential rock and roll band, their song are probably the best song of rocks, of course there are more awesome bands like Pink Floyd, Queen, Deep Purple, The Beatles, but thanks to Led Zeppelin we have the actual rock. Please, listen more music of them, and stop making a fool of yourself.
      P.D.: ''el sudakita'' con ese apodo no creo que tu opinión siquiera deba ser considerada. Ridículo.
