I actually respect the devs for putting in that much cringe, and voice actors for saying their lines with such enthusiasm. Sometimes we just need to see and hear something stupid.
The thing that gets me about the story is that near the end it takes off the cringe and steps into being a story I found legitimately compelling. There's some neat twists, especially in the good ending hidden behind the gift system, and some very cool worldbuilding, and the characters start getting a lot more depth and nuance. The problem is, as the video points out, a lot of people got into "just skip it mode" by then and missed out.
It’s so clear that everyone involved with making this game had an absolute blast, and I’m glad it’s found a firm place among the rapidly growing number of indie movement shooters coming out these days!
Here's a thing I noticed: The later levels are mainly composed of floating platforms with death beneath them if you fail a jump, but in the first couple of levels there's always a floor of sorts, better yet, it's *water* and you've learned very early (literally the first level of the game) that water = good, it makes you go fast and you want to go fast in a speedrunning game, right? So, constantly having this safety net below you that you can fall on if you fail makes you feel, well, safe thus making you more likely to experiment and try pulling off risky moves because it's not like you'll die if something goes wrong. This in turn teaches you the core mechanic of the game-it's not just about beating a level, but absolutely destroying it, utilizing every wild skip you can think of to it's full potential, experimenting and *actually* pulling off those crazy moves that save you half a second each.
That has been a very basic platforming design philosophy for literally decades. Look at Super Mario 64. First level: No pits to fall into. Last level: It's all a giant pit to fall into.
@@Howitchewstofeel5gum But Neon White is the first game I've seen where walking on the safety nets is faster than going the top routes if you're skilled enough
@@yeontanseyebrows5588 if you haven’t yet dude pick it up I was into Minecraft creative and mk, but I picked this game up for the soundtrack and it’s so addictive
It's also important to note that it's a good entry-level speedrun game, it's quite accessible, and the reason i know that is cause i never liked games like this, yet i really loved it and spent a lot of time shaving off my own time and laughing at the person on the dead bottom of globals, as I'm the second to last, what a loser being last, haha.
Waiting for a big triple A release when Yakko suddenly uploads about a lesser-known game is like if you were going to Disneyland but stopped at a random fast food place along the way only to somehow end up enjoying the fast food more than the big budget theme park you were visiting in the first place.
If you’re a fan of the soundtrack, then I highly recommend listening to Machine Girl’s other albums. WLFGRL is the most similar to the game’s OST, but his newer - more industrial albums are fantastic too.
Cyan Hardcore in RePorpoised Phantasies is incredibly similar, and is what actually made the connection for me from Neon White to Machine Girl's other music
@@Spikew yes exactly what i was thinking. i genuinely wouldn't even be surprised if the devs listened to Gemini and was inspired to make neon white based on that album's angelic imagery and sound and wanted machine girl to replicate that vibe lmao.
Okay I knew I was gonna buy this game, but after this I AM DEFINITELY BUYING THIS GAME. A game edgy and intentionally cringy in charming way with sick over the top gameplay sounds right up my alley. The only problem is my crappy laptop is not gonna handle it soooo I guess I'll get around to it when I have my new laptop... Edit: I got around to it game is good
idk exactly how crappy your laptop is but my 200 dollar laptop from like 5 years ago ran it well enough to enjoy it, did have to play with the settings a little but it ran fine.
I saw that some people were disappointed by the "For Freaks" tagline, then going in and getting the dialogue Neon White delivers, but I think they've misunderstood what it is they mean. Neon White isn't the guy walking into a Hot Topic with a gelled-up mohawk, 58 piercings and tattoos all over. It's the closet nerd in the back corner looking at grunge anime t-shirts and saying "You know what, yeah, this is cool!" and getting a novelty mask on the way out for the fun of it. Chances are if you saw a guy wearing an oni mask walking down the street you'd probably be a bit weirded out either way. It's unapologetically itself and isn't afraid to show its weirdness off.
To be fair, I think the difference between Mario having a meh story and Neon White having a meh story is focus. The devs clearly spent more time and effort into writing so it invites criticism. If someone sits through the dialogue in every game and feels like a game wastes their time a little bit as opposed to something short and sweet, they are more likely to point out how the dialogue isn't great or how they skip all of the text. That being said, I still don't think that invalidates the quality of this or any other game where the gameplay excells!
5:02 I am continuously surprised by how many people remember tattletail- I am always flash banged by it whenever I see a reference because wtf why is that still being passed around I see who helped design this game and yeah ok that makes sense now
Honestly, the dialogue in this game is on one hell of a spectrum. Sometimes it's something you can take at face value and take it seriously... But most of the time it's purposefully written in a "so bad its good" way. I absolutely love it, because no matter how "serious" the plot gets (outside of the ACTUAL serious moments, I mean) it's always JUST self-aware enough. It wasn't until I got to the first stage of the final chapter (where you get the teleport card for the first time) that I learned there was dev times (by absolutely ABUSING the teleport to skip half the stage)
I legit found Neon White because I was looking up one of my favorite artists (machine girl) when I saw the name attached to this game. Bought the game AND the soundtrack the second I found it. I also loved the story and characters because it reminds me of watching trash anime as a kid with friends and loving it.
Well said yakko, i feel this review is the only one that really gets it when it comes to the story. Yeah some of the dialogue is kinda whacky, but as you said yourself, it's done in a really endearing way, and in the end you really care about the characters, i at least felt that way. The characters say "cringe" things but when you get to know them more it's understandable they act like this, cause they are really a group of misfits, and their actions no longer comes of as weird writing but as genuine things peopel like this could say, while still being tongue in cheek tropes, put in there by freaks for freaks. It's really the best of both worlds. Furthermore the themes and lore in this game are suprisingly captivating, like some of the lines in the game when they talk about the meaning of forgiveness are honestly beatifull. It's probably nothing truly groundbreaking, but the packaging of the game just makes the delivery feel so fresh. Like the buoyancy part is sooo freaking smart, and ties the entire games plot togehter so freaking well. The forgiveness theme is also something you can directly relate to as a player. (Heavy spoiler warnings btw, but if you are this deep why the hell have you not played the game yet?!?). When I played the game through the first time i had such a rollercoaster with violet, first i thought she was pretty fun and more interesting than red. But then she was talking about killing yellow, which is the best character (i will fight you on this), all the times she tried to kill red, and she just became such a freaking annoying sadistic b**** honestly. But through the dialoague with red i kinda began to see it a bit more from her perspective, and as a reader of the story came to see her as a flawed, yet lovable enough friend for the protagonist. And then the little son of a bitch, freaking backstabs you and nearly kills white and red, cause she is obsessed about green. After that point i thought there was no freaking way, that the character would ever become redeemable. Fuck her, i don't care about anything the characters are saying about her, i don't care she was "entranced by green". It will not chance my perception of her ever.... And then she dies, and you see more flashbacks, and idk what exactly lead to the point, but i came to understand her actions, not that agreed with them, or thought it absolved her of the responsibility of her actions. But i had a fuller picture, that made me understand how white, could forgive her, and in turn made me forgive her too. Again not excusing her actions, but forgiving them. As Mikey himself says: "forgiveness is the harder path, for a reason. For all the time it takes, and all the pain it brings, it still won't undo the damage..." -so why pursue it?- "So you can move forward, forge a new path of possibilities. Find peace" Violets inclusion, the rollercoaster of emotion she brings, and the eventual forgiveness, is a perfect stepping stone for the last beat of the story. Whites confrontation with green, where when you have collected all gifts, and see all the memories, you are no longer blinded by the rage, which makes both white and you as the player capable of forgiving green. This is another immaculate aspect of the themes because, here forgiveness is used as a way of letting go. A counterargument to forgiveness as a guiding principle in your life, can be that, forgiveness giving too hastly can cause you to endure immense pain from the people you forgive since many of them, not truly learning their lesson will return to their old habits, and see your forgiveness as a sort of acceptance of their bad behavior. Neon whites ending offers an alternative to this, because white forgives green, but he also let's him go, freeing green from the guilt in the afterlife and meanwhile freeing himself from green, as he sees how holding on to the resentment and anger towards another person destroyed not onlys greens life, but the lives of the people around green too, the crew. Personally i think you can walk away from people and get rid of them in your life, without forgiving them, freeing yourself to live a better life. But I think neon white presents a really compelling argument in the ending of it's story. Even if you let go of a person, and get rid of them in your life, you will never truly get rid of the resentment and anger towards them, unless you offer them forgiveness (either explicit or internally within yourself), you will always have a part of you chained to that person, dragged down by those negative feelings and somewhat stuck in the past unable to truly live in the present and look towards the future. Agree or disagree with that point, what a fantastic way to end a game, set in heaven. If a game can make me contemplate these themes, in such a mature, and compelling way, it can have all the boobs jokes in them for all i care, and still be a bonafide 10/10.
Way back when the first 3D sonic came out, Sega defenders told me it would’ve been impossible to replicate the sprawling, speedy 2d landscapes into 3D, and that I was asking for the moon for demanding a whole game be just the fun sonic parts. But seeing Neon White, I now know those defenders were full of shit. This is the type of thing I wanted: short levels with blistering speed, but also full of depth with new challenges and discoveries that make the game infinitely repayable. It could’ve been done even back then, but I now believe Sega just lacked imagination.
Bro, nobody was having this conversation in 1998. Even of it were, an FPS from 2022 is way different from a 3D platformer from 1998. I highly doubt the dreamcast could do this, at least not with a launch title.
The forbidden triple kickflip absolutely murdered me. Tysm for this and for making me learn about this game. I'd have missed out without you but now, I might try it someday!^^
I think the VA’s did great with this, but I love to see Gianni in this. I absolutely love everything Gianni Matragrano is in. Love him in ultrakill, love his RUclips channel, love him in Fistful of Frags, everything and this is no exception.
Y'know what this game needs? Custom levels! You plop down assets, test it out over and over again to make sure it's beatable, and submit it online for others to try out. For a game that you can speedrun in less than an hour, it'd be really cool to be able to just play it as much as you want at whatever speed suits your fancy.
This game already caught my attention when it was announced, and I constantly wondered what happened to it when it poofed for so long. But now that it's finally out and seeing ma boi Yakko praise it, it makes me only want to get it that much more~
*Heaven.* Okay now kill them Demons. *Neon White.* Ok. . . . *Heaven.* We told you to kill those Demons, its only been five minutes! *Neon White.* yes. your point.
Neon white is similar to persona 5, in artstyle and in gameplay loop, kill bad guys then go talk to a batch of personality types Except Neon White has 90% less gameplay with 100% more engagement and fun But if there was a “gotta go fast” mode that you get after you beat the game where you could just entirely skip the dialogue phases I would appreciate it
I'm so glad this video exists. I bought this game immediately after seeing the trailer only to hear about how people didn't like the writing. And that honestly put me off a little bit. But I'm so glad to know that when the other reviewers showed the dialogue off, I wasn't wrong to feel annoyed they didn't find it as funny as I did.
You're incredibly good at getting me interested in games I had absolutely zero desire to play (because of the following) I'm not good at platformers or shooters, but you bet your ass I'll be recommending this to literally everyone I know
8:59 as someone who took a single look at the dialogue and then skipped every single line in the game and I did not want to stop the crazy pace, we exist
I do agree that the writing is hit or miss- I ragged on it pretty hard with my friends- but I also agree with the reviewer that said "maybe don't tell me to forgive my abusers"
This game was on my steam list for quite a bit and I wasn't sure what to do about it, but after seeing this... Yes. Definitely my thing. Thank you very much for making this video!
ok that "SET YOUR PRICE F-ERS, WATCH ME" got me......why I'm waiting for a vinyl or cd too......... i mean its a damn good soundtrack so why not 13:32 hit me like a ton of bricks and almost made me drown myself while drinking a cup of water
btw, another fucking fantastic speedrunning game I've been playing recently is cyberhook. It's like verlet swing but with more polish and a gun. Imagine neon white minus the cards but also way faster and without the visual novel bits
I respect this game so much, I might actually get it sometime, even though I'm bad at platformers and don't have great reaction time. But it's really good, and it's itself so unapologetically, you just gotta love it. The writing reminded me of another game I really love, like, cringe, but in the funnest way, and at the same time really emotional and sweet.
Finished it a week ago. This video just scratches the surface of the cringe yet hilarious writing and you'll probably love it like i did. Just be prepared to spend way too much time trying to beat certain levels but refuse to stop trying because the gameplay is just so good
So glad that i finally found someone else who liked the story. Also, the music is by Machine Girl, go listen to their stuff if you like feeling like youre on adderall without the downsides. I could give you more recommendations based off of her music and this soundtrack specifically, but I’m trying to speedrun this comment so…
I've completed the entire game, 100% and got the red dev time on about half of the levels, yet your gameplay still impresses me, so many shortcuts that I missed which makes me want to replay the game
Video games are back baby. The past few years have been the train cutting it's brake line and overfilling the coal stove. We're going off the rails in the best possible way.
3:25 is why I actually got all ace medals(with a couple of red medals) and all gifts in my first playthrough. Which explains why I spent 7 days trying to finish a speedrunning game.
If anyone likes the music in the game, you should definitely check out the composer Machine Girl. This is their first video game soundtrack, but all of their other albums are fantastic. Check out WLFGRL if you are interested!!
I had zero interest in this game when I first saw it. I now have 100% interest in this game because of this video. Yakko, you mad man, you've done it for me again.
I was so excited for this game when it was coming out, which typically means a game is trash. I then inadvertently pulled an all-nighter playing it in one playthrough. I also immediately knew this would be Yakko's jam.
This isn't the kind of game that I like but your enthusiasm for it is making me strongly consider trying it out. Great review that gives a real feel for how the game plays!
I'm glad I found your channel. You make some really entertaining videos. I picked up this game today and absolutely love it. Most unique and fun game I've played in a while.
I’ve experienced that feeling of “Wow, speedrunning is cool” after getting global rank 47 on PlayStation when I got the 100%. Now I definitely want to play similar games
I absolutely adored playing this game, it is such a unique experience. You captured what made it fun really well, including the stupor i went into when i first looked at the leaderboards for a level and was just like... HOW WTF. I just started trying to make video essays myself and I really enjoyed your general style, goofy but still crisp! Great video!
for what it's worth in the first few levels the top leaderboard score are very much cheateed. Seems to not happen so much later, but yeah that's a bit of a bummer. (the genuine top times are still absolutely insane though)
I am ashamed I did not think of you when other videos mentioned this game as being perfect for speed running and having a great soundtrack. Great to see you made a video over it!
My biggest complaint about this game is that if you want to get both endings and unlock both rush levels for each character you have to replay the entire game
I had the world record for Shield in the Hanging gardens for like 3 days, but by god the influx of new players took that away from me so fast lmao, love this game
I saw the gameplay and thought: "Hmm... looks fun, but I doubt I'd be good at it so I don't think I'll ever get it". Then you showed the dialogue. I need to get this game lmaoo

I think the VA’s did great with this, but I love to see Gianni in this. I absolutely love everything Gianni Matragrano is in. Love him in ultrakill, love his RUclips channel, love him in Fistful of Frags, everything and this is no exception.
Machine, why are there so many hot women in heaven now?
There’s something to be said for games that know EXACTLY what they are and want to be, and never apologizing for any of it.
I feel ike the dialogue is something people who played Ai:Somnium Files would enjoy. It's cringe but it's vibrant. I personally like it!
White's FORBIDDEN TRIPLE KICKFLIP made me have to pause the video for a minute to laugh
As a speedrunner I can confirm that Neon White is a drug and I am hopelessly hooked
But now that it's finally out and seeing ma boi Yakko praise it, it makes me only want to get it that much more~
13:43 I love the description here, freaking amazing
Im So glad you made this video Yakko, Makes me so happy to see this game getting more love. Neon White is truly amazing
If cocaine is a game, It would be Ultrakill.
broken it down makes it seem so user-friendly and easy to use. I can’t wait to start making soft! Thanks again!
You've actually got so quality stuff on your channel. Keep that up man!
I love how most the audio on support convos is generic lines, but they still had Blum record "I'm a werewolf :3"
*Heaven.* Okay now kill them Demons.
*Neon White.* Ok.
. . .
*Heaven.* We told you to kill those Demons, its only been five minutes!
*Neon White.* yes. your point.
Neon white is similar to persona 5, in artstyle and in gameplay loop, kill bad guys then go talk to a batch of personality types
Except Neon White has 90% less gameplay with 100% more engagement and fun
But if there was a “gotta go fast” mode that you get after you beat the game where you could just entirely skip the dialogue phases I would appreciate it
There is, level rushes.
5:02 I'm sorry, W h a t ?
What that doing there?
Don't you know? All Tattletails go to heaven >:D
14:14
adhd music, you got me there.
time to buy the game
You’d love machine girl 🤩
I heard Steve Blum and I knew I was immediately on board. This game looks dope af.
The only bad thing about Neon White is that Mikey isn’t voiced by Danny DeVito.
You're incredibly good at getting me interested in games I had absolutely zero desire to play (because of the following)
I'm not good at platformers or shooters, but you bet your ass I'll be recommending this to literally everyone I know
8:59 as someone who took a single look at the dialogue and then skipped every single line in the game and I did not want to stop the crazy pace, we exist
Wow yacko makin so many vids lately hey, I aint complaining
I’ve been thinking the same thing
The fact that the statement “to violet singing my chemical romance” was the part that sold my interest. And decided who the best character is.
This game is so cool and addicting! I hold the WR for the level "Apartments" on the switch version!
ok that "SET YOUR PRICE F-ERS, WATCH ME" got me......why I'm waiting for a vinyl or cd too......... i mean its a damn good soundtrack so why not
13:32 hit me like a ton of bricks and almost made me drown myself while drinking a cup of water
btw, another fucking fantastic speedrunning game I've been playing recently is cyberhook.
How am I supposed to enjoy this without any sauce?!
Could you please tell what other game with similar writing you played?
Finished it a week ago. This video just scratches the surface of the cringe yet hilarious writing and you'll probably love it like i did. Just be prepared to spend way too much time trying to beat certain levels but refuse to stop trying because the gameplay is just so good
playing on day one with the discord discovering and debating over skips with the community was the most fun ive had in a game
So glad that i finally found someone else who liked the story. Also, the music is by Machine Girl, go listen to their stuff if you like feeling like youre on adderall without the downsides. I could give you more recommendations based off of her music and this soundtrack specifically, but I’m trying to speedrun this comment so…
yakko's outfit in this one is so cool, like the fishnet sleeve and the painted nails
as always, cool vid and cute af
Hey yakko been rewatching all your videos recently, LOVE your content
I've completed the entire game, 100% and got the red dev time on about half of the levels, yet your gameplay still impresses me, so many shortcuts that I missed which makes me want to replay the game
You really made me interested in this game, really seems like something for me. Great video, I'll check the game out
Imagine not having a red medal on every level
This is the most fucking game ever made
Video games are back baby. The past few years have been the train cutting it's brake line and overfilling the coal stove.
We're going off the rails in the best possible way.
Every Yakkocmn video I watch makes me question my sexuality....why is he so cute...
3:25 is why I actually got all ace medals(with a couple of red medals) and all gifts in my first playthrough.
Which explains why I spent 7 days trying to finish a speedrunning game.
I genuinely hope it gets a DLC where you can play as each character with their own unique cards
you : speedrunning the interaction reminder
me : beating the time by your time cause I have an autoskipper
If anyone likes the music in the game, you should definitely check out the composer Machine Girl. This is their first video game soundtrack, but all of their other albums are fantastic. Check out WLFGRL if you are interested!!
Lets also not forget you get to have burgers with the main antagonist after he just killed your best friend
I had zero interest in this game when I first saw it. I now have 100% interest in this game because of this video. Yakko, you mad man, you've done it for me again.
14:01 "UWAHHH EXODIA. NO ONE'S EVER BEEN ABLE TO SUMMON HIM"
ah, seen this game in FUNKe's video a few days ago, looks fun, wanna play it someday :>
The second I heard that “sexy baby” joke I KNEW I had to get this game. I’ll watch the rest of the video once I play through it
I was so excited for this game when it was coming out, which typically means a game is trash. I then inadvertently pulled an all-nighter playing it in one playthrough. I also immediately knew this would be Yakko's jam.
Neon white is like one of those demo games you play on the xbox360 and never buy after loving it and just keep doing the same level over and over
The Yakko-Condi rivalry with this game is becoming frightening. They're going to break the game if they somehow don't break each other.
There is absolutely no way I'd ever be good at this game but that Machine Girl soundtrack is amazing.
Only three weeks between videos?
LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Casuals: Fun fast paced speedrun game
Competitive: *Git Guud or Git Lost, The Game*
This isn't the kind of game that I like but your enthusiasm for it is making me strongly consider trying it out. Great review that gives a real feel for how the game plays!
I'm glad I found your channel. You make some really entertaining videos. I picked up this game today and absolutely love it. Most unique and fun game I've played in a while.
I’ve experienced that feeling of “Wow, speedrunning is cool” after getting global rank 47 on PlayStation when I got the 100%. Now I definitely want to play similar games
"It is a game where sinners from hell wear animal masks" yeah. A good summarize of hotline miami
looks like cluster truck with extras tbh
"This game was made for me" most based line in this channel
I absolutely adored playing this game, it is such a unique experience. You captured what made it fun really well, including the stupor i went into when i first looked at the leaderboards for a level and was just like... HOW WTF. I just started trying to make video essays myself and I really enjoyed your general style, goofy but still crisp! Great video!
for what it's worth in the first few levels the top leaderboard score are very much cheateed. Seems to not happen so much later, but yeah that's a bit of a bummer. (the genuine top times are still absolutely insane though)
"Set you're price fuckers watch me" new favorite cache frase which screams fuck around and find out
It's like the best motorcycle game, trials, but for first person parkour. This game looks awsome
YES i was hoping you were going to make a video about this game, i love it so much and have seen you on the leaderboards
I was hooked by this game's 1st trailer because my mind was thinking "HERESY HERESY HERESY"
I am ashamed I did not think of you when other videos mentioned this game as being perfect for speed running and having a great soundtrack. Great to see you made a video over it!
My biggest complaint about this game is that if you want to get both endings and unlock both rush levels for each character you have to replay the entire game
I had the world record for Shield in the Hanging gardens for like 3 days, but by god the influx of new players took that away from me so fast lmao, love this game
couldn't think of a better artist to make a soundtrack for this game, honestly should've been GOTY
Neon White is very me-in-middleschool-doing-anime-rp-in-a-google-doc-where-every-character-has-their-own-text-color-and-font-core and I love that
Bought the game for banger ost.
Too stupid to speedrun but i like loud musics going brrrrr
you used the sonic catching a fish sound effect in this video before the game even was out
You are the chosen one
I saw the gameplay and thought: "Hmm... looks fun, but I doubt I'd be good at it so I don't think I'll ever get it". Then you showed the dialogue. I need to get this game lmaoo
