    Mario! You start up the game, and no backstory, no cutscene, no tutorial, there's a one-hit kill 5 seconds in.

    Have they already talked about how you can die moments into Disco Elysium? The game doesn't exactly put in a concerted effort to kill you in the start per se, but thanks to the RNG of the dice rolls and how it's possible to begin with really low health, thanks to stats, you can attempt to retrieve your necktie, botch the roll, take damage and then have a heart attack and die

    • @mat99134

      I think they changed it. I failed the roll, took damage, only to immediately regain it. Had more health points tho

    Quake 1 replaced the traditional difficulty selection menu with a set of three corridors. The easy and normal difficulty corridors are safe, but the hard difficulty corridor has you leap over lava first, allowing you to die before reaching the first actual level of the game. Especially dangerous if you were just figuring out the controls and didn't really understand how to move properly. Also helpful in making sure you don't play this difficulty by accident.

    • @Mekora
      @Mekora 2 года назад +4

      @@johnmackellar7489 that one wasn't quite as dangerous, but it was more hidden. You had to go into the door to select the fourth episode, and then drop from the floating water at the right point to land on some wooden supports. That would then lead you to another corridor that gave you the hardest difficulty.

    I'm utterly delighted by the "lycan subscribe" subtitle for Bloodborne. I didn't do too badly against it but I still died. I figured I'd make it work for its meal rather than standing and letting it happen. With Bloodborne - if you can run past the werewolf, out the gate, avoid the guy with the axe long enough to pull the lever and for the ladder to drop, then scramble fast up the ladder and then get to the lamp and okay the prompts before the guy with the axe also gets to the top of the ladder - you can get to the Hunter's Dream without dying. Easy.

    • @SolaScientia
      @SolaScientia 2 года назад +12

      Ah, I wasn't sure if you could cheese it past the werewolf since I think you have to open the door and can maybe get got doing that. It's been a while since I've played the beginning, so I could be wrong.
      I haven't realized that enemies could follow me up a ladder. I was in the Cathedral Ward and I ran past two of the larger jerks with the spears and lanterns, climbed up a ladder to get one bit of loot at the top of it, and then turned around only to get jumpscared and then killed because they'd followed up after me. I'm in the Hunter's Nightmare now and I want to go get the nearly 17,000 blood echoes I dropped when I got killed by one of the boom hammer hunters up on a roof, but I'm not sure how many of the hunters I can cheese it past because I'm not sure of their aggro range and I don't want to end up trapped with more than the one annoying hunter who has my stuff.

    Back then there was a rather glaring discrepancy between the quality of graphics in the intro and in the game itself. So when I got my hands on Another World for the first time, I was pretty much blown away by its stylized, fluid, movie-like, vector graphics intro and... was caught completely unaware, when the game actually started after teleportation scene. Suffice to say, those 2 or 3 seconds of me waiting for the protagonist to do something, were just enough to get myself killed by a tentacles from the depth.

    The Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series had a habit of having quick openers.
    Dark Forces 1, a venerable FPS that came out around the time of Doom and Marathon, starts you at the bottom of a down-only elevator shaft, with the door opening to a central corridor that you'll pass through/over a couple of times during the level. On Easy and Medium, you can get to the end of the corridor before you have a group of enemies on your right and another through the open doorway on your left, meaning any player not careful enough to shoot the guys on the right quickly winds up with enemies in both directions. In Hard, things are more aggressive, with an enemy below and to one side of the door that opened up, waiting to shoot you in the back as you charge down the corridor.

    This calls to mind Steel Battalion, the 2002 Xbox game with the 40-button controller that lets you pilot a giant walking tank. The game strongly encourages you to read the 34-page technical operations manual before starting, and that's good advice since the campaign starts with a hangar door opening in front of you and an enemy mech opening fire. If you haven't already internalized the half-dozen steps that must be performed in order to even _start_ your "VT", you'll get blasted to scrap in the first moments of the game. To add insult to injury, Steel Battalion would essentially delete your save game if you failed to eject from your exploding VT, or "relegate" your pilot if you survived but ran out of credits to buy new tanks. At least if this happened in the first moments, you wouldn't really be losing any progress, but the game makes it clear from the very beginning that it is NOT messing around.
