@@astrowolvez You have the beat the VN I think 8 times in order for things to start getting *real.* The thing is, Key does this thing where everytime you play through the visual novel, the universe changes a little bit. That each route isn't just "oh that's a good story," but "you literally changed the course of history." The anime did a piss-poor job of communicating that. The VN is vastly superior to the anime in making sense of what is actually happening. I will always love the anime for what it is though.
@Angelique He doesn't really excuse any fuckups, spoilers for anyone who cares but he got into the school due to his promise in basketball but because of that incident with his dad his shoulder is fucked and he can't even bring the ball above his head anymore and doesn't really have much interest in other things. His dad talks to him but he says he adds the honorific "-kun" to his name, meaning he's detached to his own son since you only add those things to people who aren't close to you in Japan or you're being respectful, not friends and family. So he doesn't have any goals in life so he just coasts by fucking around. Not saying that makes him amazing or anything but it's just that he gave up.
@Angelique Yeah, because growing up with no mom and a neglectful dad is so great, right? It's easy to say you'd turn out better, but there's a good chance that you wouldn't.
The art sure is.... something. I remember checking this VN out back in my early teens, and people assured me that it was good and serious, but the art is just... my brain literally does not process the faces of these characters as human faces.
No ones talking about Ben's fantastic edits. I mean that song was slapping and Ben did the justice of unveiling the hidden Mario character in the background
If you guys are wondering whether you should play more, I'd say not. Don't get me wrong, I love Clannad, but it's really not a good fit for Game Grumps. A big part of it is just a relaxed, easygoing pace that's meant to really get a connection with the characters. And the second half of any story route is a lot of heavy hitting stuff. But if you're looking for a more exciting visual novel, try Danganronpa. I can't imagine you getting bored with that.
@@DrBreadstick I have no idea how you can compare Star Wars to Clannad with a straight face. Clannad's not one of those worldwide phenomenons for which you can go "WTF, how did you not know that?"

While everyone else on here is awaiting the tears that are going to come😂 I cried so hard both times I watched this anime, I can't wait to see their reactions to the story.
51:50 - Yes it does get good, and it gets into really dark territory as well (which I would love to hear you guys riff on). Also, Clannad is more than just a visual novel. It was the last of the "Key Visual Trilogy" that got adapted into an anime; all three of them dealt with dark topics. Though many people agree Clannad is by far the best one. I think Clannad was adapted around 2008. That fact isn't necessary, but I thought someone may find it interesting.
@@Sophilautia I meant as part of the Key Visual Trilogy. Key word being "Trilogy". It was the last of these trilogy of shows, going in this order: Air TV, Kanon, and lastly, Clannad. I'm not quite sure why these three became the "trilogy", but that's what it seems to be referred to as.
It's more like an actual book than a video game. It's a serious coming-of-age story, not really a meme VN like some of the other ones GG has done. And unlike DDLC, there's no real "shock twist" to it. It's meant to just be taken seriously from beginning to end.
@@DanMuggeo Let me put it this way, Clannad was to the 2000's what Your Lie in April was to the 2010's, i.e THE anime that was guaranteed to make even grown men and women into sobbing wrecks, THE quintessential tearjerker. I first watched it at around the age of 12, and it made me cry like a little bitch, then I rewatched it at age 14, and I cried again. I'm not ashamed to say that it would STILL make me cry like a little bitch even though I'm 21 now. It's just THAT well-written.
Clannad's anime adaptation is universally acclaimed as "the show that makes grown men cry." It's also a product of it's time. There are some jokes that may hit, but it's mostly teenage angst given pure form and is meant to be taken fairly seriously as a slice-of-life, coming of age title. It does get good, but yea, it takes a hell of a lot of commitment before y'all will even scratch the surface. Flavor text and world building are in every interaction, despite how mundane it may seem at the time. All things considered, I don't think this one will meld to your format and humor. It's a great visual novel, but lemme tell ya, it's more a novel than a game.
Yeah it's momentarily sad, but the writing is juvenile as fuck and the way the ending is handled makes it obvious that the writer isn't capable of writing an actually sad story. Total wish fulfillment nonsense.
a little boy You ever wrote a story? That had any sort of attention? How do you know the “writer can’t actually write a sad story”? This is the most universally “Heart breaking” Story in all of anime (this and angel beats definitely, the most popular anyway, which goes a long way) so I’d say if you don’t think this writer is capable, then you won’t think any Anime/visual novel or manga is sad, ever. Idk the validity of that, that’s Just how it seems. I actually kind of relate, I don’t find most if any anime actually very sad like other mediums.
I'd like to think, this is all the same guy who was in the Doki Doki, Sakura and Christmas games, and Arin unintentionally has created a whole universe around the same protagonist.
I've always imagined him as the dude from Sucker for Love, with DDLC and other dating sims such as Adolescence Santa Claus and Pantsu Hunter being his tragic anime backstory
Clannad fan here! There’s no doubt that it’s a slow start, but it’s a highly rated visual novel due to its fantastic and emotional story. I think it’s worth getting through it all if you’re wanting a good mix of laughs and feels. I’ll be crossing my fingers for future episodes of this. :D
@@Rolling_Girl_falling_forever if they skipped the introduction with the flash forward and played starting with the daily life, seeing Dan growing more and more paranoid alongside Keiichi would be quite something. @@madhippy3 they actually didn't, doki doki has 2 endings and they got the bad one, to get the good one you need to do all the girls routes up to Sayori's... incident, doing this stops Sayori from going crazy and trying to pull a Monika on you at the end followed by a message from Salvato at the end of the credits instead of Monika's letter. With Clannad there's like 6 or 7 endings, for the first part, and then when you get all those endings you unlock after story where there is another 3 or 4 endings followed by the bad end that you have to get at least once, and then one more ending to get before the good end, and all of those endings have a laser focus, you have to choose the right things to get those endings without much wiggle room. yea... they're not gonna get any of the good endings.

And the slow-speaking protagonist voice and inserting their extra lines in between every sentence is killing the pacing
Yoo, I was really happy to see that the Grumps took interest into playing through Clannad, I am a huge fan of both the Visual Novel and the anime adaptation, but I really don’t see any continuity if the Grumps do a full play through, bc even tho Clannad is a very precious gem held high in both the visual novel and anime community. It does require the full attention from the players and seriousness to fully enjoy the game and understand what the story is trying to tell you. The Grumps just won’t take it seriously at all bc you know, their job is to be funny and deliver unique content but heck I even love the jokes Arin starts talking about Sunohara being dead, but seeing at the end of the episode, just how they were frustrated with the slow progression of the plot. @@RedPilledAsFuck I too felt that the first season was disappointing. In particular, I felt like there were many opportunities to take the story further into a less mundane territory that was, to me, hinted at by the really ominous, melancholy music, sort of how it was in Madoka Magica (not that I was expecting something dark like that). That being said, Clannad After Story is the whole point of Clannad, and I believe that the quality of its composition, as well as the relative uniqueness of its themes, really twisted the boring harem with no plot that was the first season into something much more valuable. The ending of season one really isn't encouraging, but there are themes that are wrapped up in what I would call a brilliant manner in Clannad After Story. I find it interesting that you refer to it as season 2 because that indicates to me that you perceive it as just more of the same, or as a sequel; as I said, I believe After Story is the point of the Clannad anime, and it definitely is not just 25 more episodes of a sitcom with no direction. I don't blame you for not wanting to watch more after the first season, though. Actually, I don't remember wanting to either, but after searching for answers online for why people liked Clannad (after I watched and was disappointed by it), I said whatevs and watched the rest. I am glad I did. If you didn't like the soundtrack or anything else at all about season one I can't really say with confidence that you will like After Story, but I can say that it is different and cannot be ignored when commenting as you did on what "Clannad" is. "All of it" includes After Story brudda; all of it is present and relevant in the game that the anime are based on.

Little Busters got adapted too, by JC Staff, I actually found that to be a bit more entertaining the play through than CLANNAD.
Rewrite was also adapted...?
Wow, 2020 and people still think CLANNAD was the last key anime
@@Sophilautia I meant as part of the Key Visual Trilogy.

So is this actually more like DDLC or something? This is a really slow start to a game.
It's more like an actual book than a video game. It's a serious coming-of-age story, not really a meme VN like some of the other ones GG has done. And unlike DDLC, there's no real "shock twist" to it. It's meant to just be taken seriously from beginning to end.
Rainbowshine I mean, iirc this franchise is popular as a meme. But afaik it’s only cause of the bad facial anatomy
@@DeathnoteBB It's not, it's popular because the story is good and impactful.
Legit the show made me off and on cry for like 4-5 episodes. So sad. But such a good story.

Why
Idek how to feel so just take it or leave it, I’m happy with whatever y’all wanna do, I just love everything y’all do soooo... Nothing can beat that 😄
