    Playing SH2 as a kid, I was always intrigued by the numerous references to Walter Sullivan, so I was delighted to see him made as the main antagonist in this game. I feel that there’s more than one link between James Sunderland and Walter Sullivan that will sadly never be expanded on or explored further due to the fan’s dismissal of SH4 and their obsession with James’s story and the overall psychological themes of SH2

    • @blumiu2426

      It's strange how fans can be a detriment at times to a franchise, but I think that is why a strong vision for a game's direction is needed. It can ignore demands and continue with where it means to go and usually, that succeeds. I suppose being a team thrown together they wouldn't have had that sway if Konami said to make more like SH2, so it continued the divide between what Japan wanted and the West.

    • @wolfsbane9985
      @wolfsbane9985 3 месяца назад +14

      @blumiu2426 I sorta feel the same way now about the Silent Hill 2 Remake. I think many fans are being too quick to cast judgment and throw it aside without thinking of the larger implications. If this does well, we could very likely get more Silent Hill akin to SH2, and likely a SH and SH3 remake as well.

    • @blumiu2426
      @blumiu2426 3 месяца назад +13

      @@wolfsbane9985 There is a reason to be hesitant about the Silent Hill 2 remake. For one, Konami has yet to demonstrate care for their IP and will give them to anyone to make money. Second, they have a consultancy group that prioritizes DEI and we know the trend and what that means for the characters and story. Third, Bloober lied about the game being faithful as they do double speak by saying it is, but also updated for modern audiences. The trailers have shown how not subtle their approach is. James showing major emotions and guilt, Angela's scenes far more pushing her abuse and Maria is not showing the least attachment to James as she should. If she has any free agency beyond him, they missed the entire point of her existence.
      Fan expectations are two-fold. They can exert what's unnecessary and that is identifiable within those circumstances. When a game is being changed by devs and politically motivated groups with the same aim, that is a separate issue and not on the fans. I'll be more clear and state it is typically casual fans more often that are detriment while fans of a game that know it in and out will show far more care than developers.

      @@wolfsbane9985oh 100000%, I’m thinking if they nail the atmosphere and just add onto the story it’s going to be great, regardless if it’s 3rd person behind the shoulder style. You perfectly illustrated how SH4 is indeed a Silent Hill game, through on through! We are just exploring the psychology of another victim of the order in an environment that is familiar to them. It would have been an interesting premise if we can explore the psyche of other order victims.
    In a way, SH4 is probably the most terrifying, you don't go to Silent Hill, Silent Hill come to you.

    This game was absolutely horrifying. I’ve never played a game that scared me as much as this one. Really loved it. It’s one of my favorites of all time.
    This game is a metaphor of birth. The room is a safe haven for the entire first half. It’s like the room is the uterus. The holes are a path and connections to the worlds accessible outside of the room. The umbilical chord. Then Walter’s realities outside of the room.. the cruel world outside of the room.. you feel safe in the apartment. Maybe even take time to relax in there and feel safe from everything dangerous outside of it. Then the reality of the outside world starts to set into the room. Slowly turning it into a nightmare. The hatred and cruelty becomes the apartment, thus, the nightmare begins to spread everywhere.
    It’s a horrifying experience indeed. I have a lot more I could say about this game, but I would be typing forever.

      Because 'apparently' it was supposed to take place in the same world as 1 to 3, but not take place in Silent Hill at any point. The decision to make it a full Silent Hill game but still keeping it outside of the town itself was made so early in developement though it's not really relevant, its just an excuse pepper bring up to discount it from the series or why they don't like it 😏

    A thing I like about Henry is that he doesn’t have an emotional connection to the machinations of the plot; he’s just someone who got caught up in someone else’s plan. His presence is a hinderance to the antagonist that they didn’t account for. That even makes Walter feel more realistic to me, as he is only interested in meeting his mother, and this mistake is understandable for someone so single minded.
    Henry reminds me of Harry from SH1 in a way b/c of his “wrong man at the right time” role.

    28:49 Same. It just gives me a weird sense of calm. The world is almost frozen in time with a feeling of *something* is about to happen... but not just yet. The hot air balloon lazily floating around is also a nice touch, and adds a gentle air of menace. The way it slowly spins around gives another layer to that feeling, as it looks directly at you from time to time, almost like it knows you are there. There's an opening sky splash screen in the remake of resident evil 1 that depicts this same kind of evening sky, and gives me the same feeling... Also the alley in Silent Hill 3 after Heather climbs out of the bathroom window, while the chill guitar riff continues to play. its a surreal, almost separate world. Safe, but... menacing in a way. Very liminal...

Just play on the hardest difficulty and have it set to where I and the enemy can both die on one hit. And I also don't use saves ever. That condition adds so much tension and dread to the situation because sure you can kill any enemy in one hit but if you fuck up even once you're back at the beginning.

    Something I like about this one that I never see talked about is the better confirmation of hinted lore in the prior games. This is thta the Order is unwillingly a Tulpa or thought form cult. All the mental energy from people's thoughts and subconsious wind up in an alternate dimention(sL where they are manifested in physical form. Silent Hill seems to be a natural weak point or nexus to this realm(s) and the origin realms of contents. This was even more hinted at the end of P.T. of course but..ya know..if people concentrate their will, they can start to break the barriers down more and start to merge the realms. This is how "God" was born into Silent Hill and also how Alessa's other world was manifesting. She was being used to bring "God" into existance which only further weakened the barrier between worlds. When "god" was finally born, despite being defeated, the barrier was left weaker than ever before allowing the other realm to start calling out to people nearby with thoughts resonating properly. And manifesting them. I don't think it's a consious thing but more that it can pick up and manifest thoughts with the stronger emotionally charged ones being better for this and naturally doing so. The individuals are more luring themselves than the other realm luring them. Little bits of support are seen through this in the games with an example being Maria manifesting as more of a general symbol of Jame's own self hatred in the prequel mission of SH2 before taking her more specific orle to punish him as his approach neared. The individualized other world's existing simultaneously while also the regualr town appears to other and "God" taking different shapes based on the vision of it the summoner would have also hint toward this. None of the religious lore the Order believes in is true beforehand but made real by believing in it hard enough near the bridge between dimentions where the thoughts can become real. SH 4 is the one game that pretty much iytright confirms it. Walter is KIND of trying to summon a God in the form of this idealistic mother figure but since he also envisions her as this sentient space, he is the one character actively seeking to bring an other realm over. In the past it is a single entity as a thought form with the other realm slowly making progression if merging with ours as a result. Walter's ritual is causing him to focus on making a new tear into the other dimention and bringing it foreward through to overlap ours..which he ACTUALLY SUCEEDS WITH IN THE BAD ENDING. He makes the other realm we keep going to become one with the real world. A food deal of silent Hill was based off of Jacob's ladder where he *spoilers* realizes he was dead all along. He was in a limbo state with the demonic entities not actually being evil. He perceives them ss hideous monsters destroying everything since he is rejecting rhe truth of his death and clinging to his past life. To move on the the next one his world needs to be deconstructed and removed from his mental state and they are hust doing this job. To people accepting of their state and wanting to move foreward, they appear as kind angels. The important thing is that they are niether inheritantly good or bad, just a part of the natural process doing their thing and it's the thoughts of the midstate kf the individual that determines the rest on how they appear or interact while doing so. A deleted scene makes it less obvious but it's even released that the young woman he is dating who keeps trying to distract him with pleasurable activities is actually a manifestation of his subconsious trying to slow the process and stop himself from moving on. I think the connection is obvious for most the SL situations but most of the characters are typically still alive. Walter is dead but the reason he can continue is because the Walter we see isn't Walter..its a thought form manifestation of himself he created. That's why he can do the supernatural things he does and there are multiple versions like young Walter. They are all Tulpa manifestations of his different subconsious "selves."

    Are the names of the orphanage different in the Japanese versions of 3 and 4? “Wish” and “Hope” are honestly close enough synonyms I could easily see just having different localizers translate the same Japanese word differently.

    I’ve never really understood the hate for this game, I’ve always found the story pretty intriguing and liked Walter Sullivan as a bad guy. Granted I was way too young when these games came out to play them so I never experienced the lead up to release and comparing them to the first three games. So I guess it might be looked at differently by someone who was a hard core fan when they were coming out lol. But I think it’s better than most horror games coming out today lol except maybe Alan Wake 2

    I'm always appreciative of anyone willing to suggest sh4. I love how ambitious it is even if it doesn't stick the landing perfectly.
    I find a lot of people who hate on it staunchly refuse to play the game on its own terms; it requires a lot more patience from the player than the first three, especially if you want the better endings. While I don't begrudge people for not preferring that playstyle I feel it gets thrown under the bus a lot by people for it.
    I do feel it's a bit short and have mixed feelings about how the areas are revisited in the second half but I'm pretty sure internal trouble with Konami kept the budget tight so I'm not surprised. The game feels cut short of its potential in a lot of areas and doesn't have the polish 3 had. But I really feel it's worth playing, it's a very unique experience.

    Still one of my favorite of the original team silent games. Only thing I hate about SH4 are the ghost. Having an invincible enemy that warps around a map is annoying especially when I much prefer exploring and looking at the environments. The ghost really forces you to have to run away unless you have the very limited swords to pin them down.

    I feel worst for Cynthia. She was right there man, I think she was legit about to get out. But she stopped to tell Henry how to get to the exit too, slowed down my the wall monsters you cannot save her. It was just a dream right? Like why did she stop to tell Henry how to get out too if he was just a part of the dream?
    Also the weirdo guy, he was just an eccentric who digs the spooky stuff like us, so yeah.
    also, hugging someone who is screaming for her life thinking you are the same guy who did this to her back to finish the job. Is not the smartest move.

    Silent Hill 4 was sad in terrifying way cause of Walter story, the cult that he did to see his mother was disturbing! for me it was and still one of the best horror games i played, loved the atmosphere, the music and the characters, team Silent hill did pretty good job as always and it saddened me that they no longer working on silent hill games.
    Thanks hillside and well done on the amazingly review 👏 ❤

    Odd as this might seem, but I'd say The Room is probably my favourite entry purely down to my initial experience of playing it through the first time whilst off sick from college with a fever. (Heck of a combo!) The music is on another level as well, which by the way, will you be releasing your interepretation of it anytime soonas those vocals are abslutely butter 😆

    Choices you make have impacts within the game story. It had/has a lot going for it.
