Whatever you do, plan for yourself. At the end of every day, you're the one that needs to be happy with the result. I don't think I would worry about resale so much because everyone has their own style and what works for them. They may come in and redo parts of the house regardless of how beautiful you make it. Kitchens are notoriously hard to design well. I used to work as a designer and it was my least favourite part of the house to figure out especially in renos. If you're not totally settled on layout yet might I suggest picking up some books on kitchen layout from the library? Seeing standards from design books instead of just the internet could be really helpful. One of my favourites for basic layout is Residential Interior Design: A Guide to Planning Spaces by Maureen Mitton. Kitchen Design for the 21st Century by John Drieman is also good.
Your house videos are my feel good videos. They have calmed so much of my anxiety lately.

I am an interior designer and the are rules to follow . Form always function.
Also there is an ideal working triangle for kitchen design. A kitchen designer could draw up a kitchen design. You are on the right track. Be mindful of the working triangle. The refrigerator is a little far away. Yes the refrigerator depth is a pain in the butt. There are counter depth refrigerators too. Although a little smaller.
Go with what you love.
Hey Cathrin, in our kitchen we sank the fridge into the wall. Above the fridge, the wall wouldn’t be sunken in. As long as there’s nothing inside the wall that’ll prevent that. Totally do what you love. It’s going to be epic 🤩🐶

Get what you love; if marble requires more maintenance, then oh well, you'll love every minute of looking at it n it'll give a spark of happiness every time you walk into the kitchen.
Oh my gosh YES paint is bonkers expensive rn. I got 3 gallons 2 months ago, and with a couple roller covers and a paint key the whole trip was almost $130. I get that everything is more $$$ right now, and compared to every other line item in a reno, esp a really serious one like you have on your hands, paint is still a relatively minor expense, but I was pretty floored.
Something to think about with your kitchen counters is the counter height. It appears you’re tall, so having the higher counter would be more beneficial for you. My husband and I did that when we built our home and love it. Basically, the base that the lowers go on is higher, not the actual cabinet. I’m loving this series girl!

Blue tape on floor really helps....so does graph paper.....you can draw and draw....put your permanent fixtures first, allow 36-40" between island and other cabinets and appliances. It really helps to draw and erase. HAVE FUN

I have a space behind my cabinets to match the stove and an avocado rolled back there once.. it was a whole thing trying to figure out how to retrieve it before it rots. 😂

This might sound weird but the color of the wall paint in your current kitchen really makes your face glow. Like it matches your skin color so much. 🤩
I know this is part way into the video, but I wanted to put this in before forgetting too. I feel for you with the window thing. A tip that someone gave me and I used it. If you can design your lighting/windows around their standard sizes it will help out with the costs. Let's say you wanted a wall of windows and picking out several windows that could literally be installed next to each other would be far cheaper than a larger window. Now if the vision is uninterrupted view than that wouldn't work. But in our case we were able to save thousands by putting some of their larger windows installed with minimal dividers between them and brought in a ton of light.
Love the plan. Our fridge needs the doors to stick out from counters otherwise they won’t open fully, so do check the one you are getting!
Yes, agreed. The look of the refrigerator sticking out is an eye sore. Something to keep in mind though if you want the countertop/cabinet flush with the refrigerator is to make sure you’re allowing clearance for the refrigerator doors to open and be fully functional. 🙂
I would never be able to make such big decisions I’m too indecisive. For me it’s hard to imagine what things would look good or how they would actually look in real life but none the less I think you will do a great job at designing your house the way you want it and I am really impatient for the next videos!!!!

Loving the progress! You can also use a program like Planner 5D to see the space in 3D with your measurements and get a better idea
I’ve seen people recess the refrigerator to make it match the cabinet. Depends on what is on the other side of that wall, but it’s easier to do that than change the cabinets. I just got a counter depth fridge, but I wish I could have used standard and not compromised on size. Next time I’m recessing the fridge.

Thought regarding the fridge and pantry-ish cabinets wall: You can totally bump your wall of cabinets out 4 inches. Just frame out something basic behind them so you have something sturdy to secure them to. And if you're doing floor to ceiling cabinets, do you even have a countertop to worry about on that end? Where are you worried about having a 28" counter depth? OR are you just saying top and base cabinets with a normal countertop on the base cabinets?
Then on the sides, you can usually get matching panels from the cabinet company to cover the spaces on the sides. You’ll want something there anyway, if you’re stacking cabinets rather than using a 96” one.

You can make the overhang work, you just need support on the sides. We have a much bigger overhang than that, and we have the sides built up, and it looks beautiful.

I really love the door arches and can't wait to see the finish product after you renovated it. I was wondering as i have a lumix G7 and the rode aux cord for my camera and the quality of the sound does not sound as loud as yours. Do you turn it up in imovie ? or is there a setting in the back of the camera that i should be looking at, i purchased based on your recommendation.

Oh my gosh my dog, Dexter, just noticed Fancy and got all excited and started watching! :-) All you are going through is exciting but scary. I’d be afraid I’d goof on the measurements! I’m sure it’s like a puzzle. You like those lol! I’m loving the series. But I think I would watch no matter what is going on. You remind me of me when I was younger. Sometimes now. Not in looks but our personality and the way we plan and do things. Have fun! There was ad on here that was so nice with all back decor like you like. I think it was HERSMS or something like that. They had beautiful home fixtures and lighting. Looked like you. I googled it and think I found the right place and a sofa alone was $87,000 - ummm no! lol 😂
What if you did some cool sneaky pullout behind the cabinets to make up for the extra space, like…. You know those new cabinets that slide out and you can put like your canned goods on them or spices? But its super slim? That’s my suggestion lol

I'm a bit concerned that your wallpaper is coming separately. There are dye lots when wallpaper is printed. Meaning the ones printed at the same time will have the exact same colors. I'm hoping your other seven rolls match the dye lot of what you already received. 🙏

Consider putting same counters in your master bath. Very common.
You could try turning the island so it runs down the kitchen instead of across. By turning the island you should have more space all the way around. Hope this helps x

You could put the dishwasher in the island (opposite the stove)
How long do you think the total renovation will take?
Just relocate that vent stack and get the walk room you need. it's super easy to do.
The countertops are going to look gorgeous 😍 I have marble for mine and they are pain in terms of etching but you get used how to live them. We leave a big cutting board out, dish mat, and have lots of coasters around to avoid etches from drinks and food. Accidents happen, like drips from a jar leaving a ring, but it’s really only noticeable when the light hits a certain way.
Yup... every material you use, esp for something as high-traffic as counters, is going to have a downside and maintenance you have to take into account. You might as well get the material you love if you're going to have to maintain it either way.

Definitely leave the dishwasher in the original place next to the door. Realistically, who cannot walk around the other side if needed to get around it. The layout you started with is perfect!

Would you consider quartz in a marble pattern. They can look just like marble and easy care.
Dishwasher should be placed close to where your dishes go when unloading...of course it's your house and your rules, you do whatever you want!! It's gonna look great bc you've got a great sense of design.....I know bc I'm a designer 😉 👌

Our dishwasher is in the corner of our kitchen and when it’s closed it blocks a drawer and when it’s open it blocks two cabinets 🤦🏻♀️ So make sure you think about that as well! I don’t envy you the design process-there’s so much to think about!!

I'm catching up with the Vlogs and as a german person I was wondering about the fridge situation. Because in Germany it is normal to have the fridge like inside a cabinet so you can not see it. It looks like a normal cabinet and when you open the door, you open the fridge and the fridge is not sticking out 😅
I understand your thoughts on resale but like another person pointed out- every person has different tastes. I personally think you dont have enough top cabinets. I have a bad back and hate getting stuff from bottom cabinets. Plus plates and cups have no business on bottom

There are kitchen designers on RUclips for tips about kitchen design. Every kitchen is a compromise about something or other. :-)
Get an inspection after each step to make sure everything is to code.

If you still haven't finalized a design, I highly suggest consulting a designer! You could even hire 1-2 from Upwork to help you design the space, which wouldn't cost very much (I think Shelby Church did that with her Palm Springs home as part of a sponsorship?) Also, another thought: what if you rotated the kitchen island? I know you said you didn't want to initially, but with the gorgeous views out the window, it could help solve some issues and still be super aesthetic. Whatever you decide, I know it'll be beautiful. Can't want to see the finished product!!

I am confident you will end up with a countertop you love, but I just wanted to say as someone with leathered granite, it is just awful. It was installed by the previous owner and “looks” very nice. But the texture is impossible to keep clean, especially when baking and flour are involved. We ended up getting a stainless steel mobile island to use for heavier/messier cooking because I do not have time to scrape up loose flour or dried sour dough starter out of the leathered granite nooks and crannies. Is this just a me problem? I have no idea.
Can't you sort of shove the fridge in? If you take down a few inches of the wall in he back, you could set the fridge farther in the back and don't need to fill in the space between all of the cabinets.
