    Both my parents are from Busan, so for the longest time I thought that gyeongsangso saturi was just general standard Korean.
    Then I found out it wasn’t, and I realized I was the equivalent of someone who learned English through nothing but country music albums.

    Dialects are a fascinating thing. Even just moving in one country can cause some confusion in meanings of words. It happens in other places too but I love hearing the different Korean dialects. The challenge was a lot of fun to watch too, I'm impressed by Jooyeon's guessing skills wow!!

    So interesting that there would be such a big language difference in such a small country. Is there a historical or geographical reason for this? Was this province cut off at one time or something?

    • @won1853
      @won1853 8 лет назад +84

      It's because the country is mostly mountainous. If you look at a geographical map, you'll notice that usually a mountain range separates the provinces.

    • @talktomeinkorean
      @talktomeinkorean  8 лет назад +66

      +Dylan A. Kent yeah it's mainly because 70% of the country is mountainous :)

      Even in the same province there are lots of different dialects in different cities. For example, I live in South Jeolla province and I see many different Jeolla province dialects. Mohk-po dialect of the west, Gwang-ju dialect in the middle, and Soon-cheon dialect in the east are different even though they are in the same South Jeolla province. Kinda strange and funny you know.

    This seems to make things a lot harder for me. 😥 How many dialects are there in South Korea? Does every Korean in SK knows and speaks the "standard" Korean language? Or just those living in major cities? Do Kdramas, Kpop, Kmovies, and TV shows all use the standard Korean?

    • @heck4318
      @heck4318 6 лет назад +10

      Most k-dramas are made in Seoul, which is the dialect that Standard Korean is based on, so yeah, almost all k-dramas will use the standard.

      There are 6 Korean dialects in Korea. Usually when idols who aren't from Seoul learn the Seoul dialect. As you can see in the video they are saying completely different sounding words, even though it has the same meaning. They usually have to change their dialect so they can be understood better. But it's fun to see when their dialects come out if they are scared or shocked. If you watch Dream High, the third episode you can hear the difference in their dialects. And it's easy to follow along with English subs. The character Samdong lives in the countryside and moves to Seoul for school and his dialect is very strong. It will kind of put things in perspective. The perfect example is in episode 4 at about 37:45 (if you can find it online, check out viki) when he asks why these girls are looking at him. He says it in his dialect and then she says to lose the dialect and he repeats the question in what would be the standard dialect in Seoul. It will make more sense then.

    This is the TTMIK team that I miss! The 5 amigos sitting around talking and having a good time,, the 3 above are now shuffled off to office jobs and we never see them again. TTMIK is business only now and no fun. They (He) is taking down their free Level classes and charging outrageous prices to take the Level classes. Several years ago I ordered the Level 5 workbook and was very disappointed when it arrived. 90% of it was "cut & pasted" from the Level 5 examples that were already on the website! Very little "filler" material was added.
