My take on the feeling from dragon skulls is that is the part of a dragon rider recognition system and works both ways (if true, it showed that Tyrion was not a Targaryan). Aslo the take on shadows as big as giants goes quite well with the Varys' power parable about a small man casting a big shadow, seeing how those two were planning a giant power re-arrangement. And the dialog shows that the war and chaos was planned regardless of Baelish, by "more that two players", he just redirected it to extract the most advantage

I love this chapter because it involves so much potential foreshadowing for Arya's later books. This training she goes through with chasing and catching all the different types of domesticated and wild cats in the Red Keep, building her physical and strategic skills. Later in AGOT, she feels as though she's become the cat that's being chased. Arya doesn't seem to be "losing" herself, so much as gaining new abilities. She's able to take on the skills of other creatures and people, but under them is always Arya.
With the potential foreshadowing, we have Arya 1) catching and kissing Balerion 2) bowling over and escaping Tommen and Myrcella, 3) finding the dragon skulls that she will later see as "old friends", 4) spying on and almost recognizing Varys and Illyrio while they're plotting, and 5) finding a way out of the Red Keep, which could be used as a way in as well. All this could foreshadow that she'll be integral to the Targaryen restoration and the Lannister downfall in TWOW or ADOS.

What a fun chapter!! You both did such great work teasing out the meaningful details. 😁
It struck me when you were describing Arya's dreams of being lost in the Red Keep that it sounded eerily similar to Dany's entering the House of the Undying. Both very disorienting, calling perception into question. Also, pure speculation here, but the disquiet people feel around the dragon skulls could be the presence of magic, which you would feel even when you couldn't see them. Maybe all of the Red Keep have been a little on edge all these years with the power looming below them...parallel to the casks of wildfire...ooh!

I was getting worried, I had agreed with almost everything you all said so far so I had nothing to comment on...
But Varys is just as shady and slimy as petyr.
The show really screwed with his character. He conspired with Petyr to blame Tyrion for the dagger and never bothered to correct or counter the claim.
He fed Ned's parinoia and suspicion of the Lannisters even when they had nothing to do with Jon Arryns death.
Also people forget he was absolutely willing to let Tyrion Die after testifying against some with copious notes the only rescued in because it's Jamie threatened him and told him he was literally kill him if he didn't.
Hey Danny is also the mummers Dragon. She was the pet project of Illyrio and Varys as well.

Another dippy theory, because one isn't enough: Kevan Lannister was one of Doran Martell's mysterious 'friends at court', and it was he who informed Prince Doran about Cersei's plan to assassinate Prince Trystane. To be clear, he wasn't actively informing on his family to Doran; it was just in this one specific instance. Oh, and the connection was formed by Oberyn when his mother took he and Elia to the Rock on the betrothal tour. It fell to Kevan to entertain them.

I don't think Arya is a true lone wolf, after all she constantly craves companionship and family/pack, so I do think it's an insincere epithet. We know that Ned's lone wolf speech is only referred to in Arya's chapters and Arya may claim herself to be the lone wolf when she's headed into Braavos due to a misinterpretation of Ned's words, but I think part of Arya's arc is about reclaiming her identity and going home and being a pack and/or creating a new pack of her own. She needs to realize that she has it backwards, that the Stark's only started dying when they began to separate and become lone wolves themselves. And I think this quote goes hand in hand with what Jon told Arya in her first chapter about how the "longer she waits, the sterner the penance" because I think the longer she remains a lone wolf the most likely she will die just like Ned's speech eluded to. And since I don't think that will happen, I do think we will see her back with her family and she'll stay with family - blood family or found family - no matter what she ends up doing. But yeah I don't see Arya any more of a lone wolf than any other member of her family at the same time, in fact I'd say some of them are more of a lone wolf than Arya.

As it pertains to Tommen's death...This is my dippy theory: Tommen and Myrcella's deaths will be reversed, meaning Cersei will drive Myrcella to commit suicide and a Martell will murder Tommen. Specifically, Tyene will hide a poisoned pin or sharp object in her hair, Tommen will pat her head and get pricked, then die within days. I think you guys are mistaking Ned's lack of awareness for overall stupidity. I always felt Ned (and Robert Baratheon) were GRRM's critique on the warrior king. Ned is an excellent warrior and he is honest and just and dutiful and has a chivalry to him ("he who passes the sentence should swing the sword"), but as GRRM once said about Aragorn from Lord of the Rings, "what is his tax policy". These warrior leaders often times have no skill in politics and I believe he is using these huge clues of Ned (and Robert) appearing to be completely unaware as his commentary that just because they have some good skills does not make them a good king. FWIW, Robert was wise enough to know that only a fool would meet the Dothraki in an open field, so not completely dense, just politically.

Completely agree! Plus Ned managed to rule the north despite the fact that he was completely unprepared for it (his brother Brandon was). Intelligence is always partial, Ned can be politically stupid and delusional, but I do not think he generally lacks intelligence

I first read GoT & Ned warning his sons that dire wolves are extremely hard to control, even with training & attention - & then the same Ned thinks that it will be OK to spend a few weeks travelling to Kings Landing, with the King's entourage, with the King's children, with his bitch wife, all in tow, & 2 bloody dire wolves. And one of Ned's daughter's is unruly & hard to control, & she has a dire wolf. And that was a good idea? I mean of course, what could possibly go wrong? I found that to be completely unbelievable, in fact, Ned's level of naivety is not believable at all, no one would be that naive & down right stupid. As if Robert would have a problem with Ned saying my children will join me later in Kings Landing, or I'll come down with my own attendants once I've made preparations because this is a bit unexpected. What bullshit. I love ASOIAF, but fans who talk about these books as though they are flawless classics are totally hoodwinked, there is so much wrong with this story & the characters, Ned Stark perhaps most of all. As for Varys, I don't get that people believe his story about being cut - the guy is a professional liar & deceiver, why believe anything he says, I doubt he's a eunuch at all, the story he told Tyrion, he was probably the wizard who cut of some poor bastards dick. And Dany, they used her to hatch them some dragon eggs, that was it, hatch the dragon eggs & then get killed on the Dothraki Sea, that was the idea, Varys wanted all three dragons for his Blackfyre crew. Varys & Illyrio had to set up Tyrion to get kidnapped by Jorah Mormont to basically get to Mereen to steal the dragons.

@@traumer9622 Well now, what a world it would be if people thought everything through. Just perfect. Nope, that's not the point where Ned is concerned, Ned makes just colossal mistakes that are too foolish to be believed. Especially when considering that Ned's character, as set up by the author, is quite cautious & reserved. So Ned Stark, as we know him, would not do that down right stupid stuff he does, like taking 2 dire wolves on a weeks long trip to Kings Landing. Having dire wolves in Kings Landing at all, I mean that's just nuts. When I first read it I didn't believe it, I thought, hang on, this is the same guy that warns Rob, Jon & Bran against taking home dire wolf pups because they are extremely dangerous & hard to control, but then allows his two very very young daughters to take their dire wolves to Kings Landing? No. Something tells me that Ned Stark would not have allowed that to be considered even, much less permitted. It's a flaw in the story, & all stories have flaws, the author isn't perfect. Like I said, I love the story, but Ned's section in GoT is just no at all believable.

I don't think Varys is a good man at all. He's terrifying, he cuts kids tongues so they can't snitch on him to other people. He is not good, he's horrible, dreadful and a traitor. Robert should have killed him when he won the throne.

Well, he isn't a good guy, that's for sure and reading the books I definetly feel than Varys is far more dangerous than one might think. But I don't think he's evil, evil. Like he can do evil things in order for the good. So that does not make you good but also not evil? Let's just call him a grey guy😂
