This was so helpful. I just want to make movies of my DCS adventure to send to a friend of mine and hopefully get him interested in it as well. You’ve just got me to the point I really think I can accomplish this using the Nvidia screen capture. Thank you!
Great how-to, thanks very much. FYI....in F11 mode you can press the period on the number pad to lock the view to your aircraft. Your manual panning actually looks great (as if the viewer can't keep up with the aircraft), but there's the tool if you want it completely tracking.

How to make a GR DCS Video, get a shot of formation take off, some ferry flight, landings, more take off, a bit of Air to Air, lots of Ground pounding explosions, landing, profit!
A good tip for this type of thing is to sketch out a "story board" on some paper before you start shooting. Then you refer to the "revised" story board for editing. There is a reason why the pros use story boards in the film industry.
Also Right Cntl +F3 give flyby from the point you pressed it from. Great for videoing choppers coming into an LZ. And saves you chasing it with the mouse
Ha... seems about right, based on my experience making real-life flying video's, it seems to take a couple hours to 10-minute video, especially if you want different views and trying to pick the best footage from a 60-minute flight.
@@imarocker66 i do war thunder cinematic on my other yt channel and like 3/4 of the montage is just taking videos... like 5 hours of playing and getting the good shots for like 30 min of montage
Hey Cap, great vid as always. I've often though about how much of a headache coordinating all the video footage must be for you.. So I just wanted to let you know that I appreciate it! Keep up the great work :)
You forgot the most important part. Pray to the DCS Gods that the track file doesn't get corrupted or becomes unplayable. If I start on the ground in the ramp area I have less than a 50% chance of the track being usable because it usually crashes the aircraft or gets stuck in the dirt prior to takeoff. Once airborne the replay has more flexibility and can absorb a few minor glitches so chances of a corruption go down. Only start a video flight on the ground if you really have to and you are willing to re-record it a few times. Better yet, spawn in the air and get the airborne clips you need before starting the painful process of recording ground and taxi operations.
Question Cap, Does the replay you get from your mission allow you to select different aircraft when doing your screen capture during the replay? Or do you have to get replays from other team mates? Such as when you change to a different plane view of a team mate to get the kill shot. Thanks
i have this problem where the replay starts drifting when i try to play it again and it usually ends up with my plane crashing... does flying in a private server like this have the same problem?
Thanks for all your HARD WORK. I have used your tutorials for endless learning. Question please - how do you convert the dcs TRK file so it can be imported into video editing software. Thank in advance if you have time to answer.
Following the video here, thank you Cap. When I conduct the flight in MP the replay won't show the aircraft I'm flying at all. It will show AI aircraft and ground units but not my aircraft. Any ideas to help?
buzzlite3 I had the same problem, but I managed to figure out a solution. First, your mission file needs to have your aircraft as “client.” Second, after selecting your role you MUST unpause the simulation (to start the server). Don’t click “Fly” yet. When you unpause, you shouldn’t spawn. Then, go to the pause menu, select role, and then click “Fly.” You will spawn. If done in the correct order, when you watch the replay, your aircraft will spawn in after a few seconds. However, even when doing this method, I still notice that the reproduced recordings do not accurately replay what happened during the flight. It's not as bad as single player recordings, but it is still off. Without a willing "camera man," it is difficult to make accurate DCS recordings from external angles.
When in F4 veiw and you put the camera in the cockpit, how do you keep the pilot in focus? When I do it, the pilot is blurry but, the plane itself is in focus.
@Grim Reapers I know this is an old video, but I'm hoping you still get notifications for comments. Is there a way to invert the mouse axes in the Alt + F2 camera mode you described here? I managed to invert my normal F2 camera via the "Axis Tune" menu under the "General" set of controls so that my mouse works the same way that mice work in every other 3D game ever, but when I switch to the Alt + F2 camera, my axes are suddenly reversed again (left mouse movement = camera pan to the right, rear mouse movement = camera pan up, etc.) Is there a fix for this, or have you simply learned to manipulate the camera in "opposite day mode?"
I did everything you did but when i go in to the replay and watch the track my cameras are stuck and they replay only my head movement in the cockpit as i originally played it, how can those external views be unlocked?
Cap, I've been dying to make videos for DCS for a long time but in the eternity of this sim, I've always had trouble with replays being corrupted, or having events occur that actually did NOT happen in the original mission. DOES this still happen with replays? I haven't bothered to try since it's been corrupted nearly forever. Do you run into these issues still?
ALL of my replays get corrupted, that is the nature of the replay, they are not proper replays. You just have to suck it up and do the best we can with what we have.
Yes, track replays are still 90% broken in DCS, without any hope on the horizon AFAIK. If you want to see how a track replay is supposed to work, try out IL2 BoX. It is 99% perfect, never corrupted, and you can rewind, change replay speed, camera angles, etc. I believe that DCS would get a LOT of good free publicity thru better user videos if they ever figure out how to make it work.
Thanks for confirming this. The track system is an absolute mess. Its a great loss to the community and ED, in a time when the majority of your publicity and promotion, comes from users themselves. It looks as if it’s been abandoned by ED completely, to be honest.
hmm, so when I view the replay of the server, the camera spawns over an airport and I cant select my plane. it doesnt appear on the map even when ive unpaused for a while

Good one, Cap. I had *_no friggin clue_* how folks were making those multiple viewpoint videos...well...because I've not seen that sort of replay ability in a flight sim since Red Baron. And THAT was a long, long time ago 😲
How do I -or- can I easily use the (F11) view to get an overview of the current area I am editing with a 3d overhead view. I am currently having to use F11 key then roam from the airfield to where I want to view? There has to be an easier way?
Greetings, I am trying to create my own private use multiplayer server as shown in this video (but with the Bankler Case I recovery trainer mission) but after I click Briefing and Fly, the cockpit view opens but it is basically frozen (I press space or esc to unpause), no controls work, no audio...no nothing...just the static cockpit. I am doing this in VR so I don't know if that matters? Any thoughts or ideas? What am I doing wrong? Regards, Tim
Does anyone know why the controls seem random? Some times during replay tracks I can have the freedom to choose the views etc. And sometimes I can't do nothing
I would recommend Nvidia Shadowplay for systems with bad specs as there will be nearly no frame rate drop, and regular single player mode will work if you are using the flaming cliff aircrafts (or most ed modules).
And personally I would recommend using the free version of NCH Video editor or Cyberlink Powerdirector since they are one of the easiest to use. Atleast in my personal experience.
