Couldn't agree more. I have watched countless videos on learning the fretboard, the CAGED system, etc, but this has been the most useful video of them all. A lot of bells went off in my head as I was listening and now I just need to sit down with the guitar and put this into practice. But I'm really looking forward to improving based on the information in this video! Well done! Keep 'em coming!

For most of my guitar playng life, I never had learned patterns for playing lead. I've watched dozens and dozens of CAGED videos over the years but nothing clicked with me. I've always played rhythm, never could grasp what others were doing, making it look pretty effortless.
    Until now.
So...I'm up late last night scrolling through RUclips videos. Up comes a recommended guitar video - your 'Unlock your Guitar Neck with Patterns'. I had never seen any of your videos before.
I ended up watching it half a dozen times, making more and more sense to me with each pass.
Now this evening, I'm playing along with your video and it's like a darn lightbulb went off in my head! I can actually start to see where the patterns are and I'm playing riffs (very simple and uncreative at this point) up and down the neck. Your instructional style and delivery is easy to follow and your demonstrations are easy to interpret and recreate on my guitar.
Unbelievable. Your video unlocked my brain and has given me new life playing guitar. I cannot thank you enough. New subscriber, will be watching your other videos. Thank you again.

I wondered for a long time whether I could help others that struggled like me. So 3 months ago, I decided to start making videos for others. Can't believe how fast it's grown and the response I've received. I'm so glad i could help you. Please reach out to me if you get stuck. I really do want people to play what they want and enjoy guitar like I do. Thank you so much

And from the G string.... which you just taught me how to memorize all the notes on that string on the guitar.... easily. Thank you so much! This is a super valuable lesson here! Great job! 👏👏👏💖🥰😄

  • @harveybc

Excellent lesson. I'm not a lead guitarist but dabbling in adding a few lead type licks to my chords and this definitely helps. I did first learn the notes on the E strings because that unlocked the bar chords rooted on the low E, then did the same with the A. I then use patterns, like down two and over 2, (or 3 depending on the strings), to find the notes on the other strings which are needed to do triads.
I like your explanation for notes on the D string. I could already find them but this speeds the process up. (Don't have to think as much.)
I've been playing off and on for over 60 years and resisted leaning the notes, as it just seemed to much work, until I found the cage system. It really isn't as daunting as it seemed at first, just learn the patterns and you have it. The biggest problem I've had in doing leads is what notes to target. I wish I'd seen this a few years ago.

This is an excellent approach to learning. Most teachers stress learning the notes on the 5th and 6th strings which also provides a great road map to the fret board. That is how I learned, but this way might be even easier for beginners.

Thank you so much for this video!! I have been playing guitar for about 1 year and have learned many cords and memorized around 7 songs. I felt like my learning was starting to stall as I did not understand any music theory. I then started learning Major, Minor scales, Pentatonic scales, to try to play some lead guitar and improvise. Did not take long for me to hit information overload with all the different RUclips videos with different patterns to memorize. Needless to say after a few weeks I had given up and was at the point of quitting guitar all together. I was so confused and frustrated and did not have any understanding of the fretboard. Luckily I found your video and after watching a few times a light bulb went off. All of a sudden all the different cords, scale positions made total sense and I could visualize it all on the fretboard!!! I still have a long learning journey ahead and will have questions once I have a better understanding of everything. The good new is I am now improvising and I am able to navigate the fretboard!! Thanks so much for keeping my guitar journey alive!!

You definitely have a way of teaching which I totally understand. Only having to learn 3 patterns and how these patterns relate to 3 cords which you can move up and down the fretboard is amazing!! Also easily moving between the major and minor scales totally makes sense now. Before looking at the whole fretboard did not know where to start. Using the A cord as a starting point was absolutely brilliant and started my path to understanding. Look forward to future videos. Will definitely ask for help if needed.

There are lots of amazing guitar players on RUclips that really know their ‘stuff.’ But, often it’s too hard to grasp without going over it a trillion times or who cares, it doesn’t give me what I need.
