Get Over The Guitar Rut! How I did It

  • Most guitar players get stuck in a rut and end up losing interest or never being able to get over that hump. I will show you in this video the 3 things that really opened up the fretboard for me and allowed me to improve more than anything else I've ever tried. it's not endless scales, modes or anything else, it was simple concepts like moveable chords and noticing that everything connects together.

    I just told my wife at dinner tonight that maybe I'm not meant to play lead. Had a southern rock and country band approx 30 years ago. I was lead singer and strummed open chords along with the band. About a year ago I decided to get to know my guitar again. I have poured my heart into learning scales etc but just stuck in a rut. Came in tonight turned on yt and there you were. I can tell that you mean it when you say......just reach out to me. Thank you so much! Don't know if I will get there but not quitting yet! Wish you much success! Subbed

      @daveyjones457 I was in a similar situation a few years ago. This gentleman tells you absolutely everything you need to know. Watch this video (and some of his others) several times and you will be very surprised at how quickly you will progress. I found that using backing tracks made a huge difference and not trying to play what has gone before but doing it my way. All the best.

      Steve, do you know the caged system?
      I learned the caged system, and with that the whole fretboard opened up and many things can come to your mind, it’s just automatic, and you understand how the fretboard pieces together, and lead becomes very fun! Or at least Caged has done that for me!

      The A shape is the killer. You have major and minor chords under your fingers-no bent fingers for us arthritic eldsters. Once you have this, chords and key progressions get you making music. Add the BB and Albert boxes, and you are flying.

    Nicely captured. I wasn’t sold until you went deep enough to tie the movable chord shapes to the scales. I like to incorporate the underlying arpeggios while improvising then some scale tones, maybe a few bends. One of my many short comings is I’ve never held myself accountable to a metronome and find it difficult to count while riffing. I watch alot of Guthrie Trapp and what you’ve outlined is similar to his way of visualization. Anyhow I enjoyed your tutorial and I can spot a musician

    Only just found your channel and this video. I’m a silver haired guitar player and I think I’m at the top of beginner but more likely into intermediate and have been playing for 4 years. I am also disabled and part of my disability is that I can’t take in a whole bunch of information at one time! The first part of the video on moveable chords was brilliant and certainly going to take that on board but the rest was too much and in any case, my fingers don’t move fast enough to be able to play lead guitar so is there any point in me trying to learn scales?

    • @daveyjones457
      @daveyjones457  3 месяца назад

      Thank you, first off, let me know if i can ever help. Secondly, you don't have to worry about playing fast to play Lead. There are alot of people who really only played lead inside of Chords. But either way, learning a few licks even if they're only played slow is still a step. Fast doesn't mean good. Choosing the right notes at a slower pace means more than being fast. Hope i can help

    A guy in my band plays entirely by ear cause thats just how he started many years ago. He plays better solos than me even though i know my major modes, pentatonics and movable chords/ triads. Most melody lines seem to be based on the third of the underlying chord. Even knowing that doesnt seem to help much.Ive come to the point where i am resigning myself to the fact that i now have to spend many hours listening to melodies and improving my ear like my other band member did over all his learning experience. Do you have any suggestions how to make that process quicker. Thanks

    • @daveyjones457
      @daveyjones457  3 месяца назад +1

      I would suggest mimicking... for example... i have a couple of videos where i play something and then you repeat it. This helps with the ear, because your seeing and hearing something and then trying to mimic what you're hearing... but honestly you can do this with any solo... since you know your scales, you have a leg up. Most Solos or licks are either in major or minor pentatonic. If you know the key they're playing in, then it's just a matter of hearing whether it's major, minor, or a mix of the two. Then you just take it one note at a time and see what they're playing. You'll end up just knowing what those notes sound like... another technique is to sing or hum what you're wanting to play... then trying to play what u sang... let me know if you need a video on this that might help. Stay in touch

    I’m confused. I got 21 notes in the c scale your showing C D#orEb FF#orGb G A#orBb C D#orEb F F#orGb G F F#orGb G A# orBb C D#orEb 🤷🏾‍♂️ help

    • @daveyjones457
      @daveyjones457  6 дней назад

      I'm confused as to what your asking i guess. If you're playing a scale day in C, once you get to the C note again, it just starts back over note wise. So I don't count that as different notes. I just think of it as the same notes an octave higher or lower. I guess I need clarification on exactly what you're asking.

    • @edcrutchfield3447
      @edcrutchfield3447 6 дней назад +1

      What I’m saying is the c scale on the 8 fret goes C D# orEb F F#or Gb G A#or Bb then C so which is it 🤷🏾‍♂️. Help

    • @daveyjones457
      @daveyjones457  4 дня назад

      So if you play the pattern on the 5th fret, you get the C major scale. C, ad, E, F, G, A, B...
      If you play the same pattern on the 8th fret, you get the notes you're mentioning. That's the C minor scale.
      Any major pattern moved up 3 frets gives you the minor scale. Just an easy way to be able to play both scales.

    if you choose to be professional you need to dig theory .it doesn't make you good technically playing guitar physically but thinking of music , harmonically , melodically and rhythmically inside and outside and makes you understand music better...and getting strong on harmony , melody, rhythm and techniques. Its hard...I barely find someone play with all this things .some are good rhythmically , some melodically,some harmonically not all can achive all those who achieved are performing on world class levels already... its hard but we can work and get better in our own speed and enjoy music ...if you think of shape you will sound mechanical instead think of intervals and it's function.. it will helps you better in note choices rather relying on muscle memory if you don't have clear idea on you head what you want to play then you rely on your finger and muscle memory hoping it will make good phrase and it doesn't....if you only learn major scale you get restricted to mostly diatonic harmony and you will never know the character of other scales music is not about just one scale ...different scales have different characteristics and make you feel certain way if any outside harmony thrown you will get lost ... playing same lick again and again you are not being creative it gets boring to hear the same lick repeating ...there are no short cuts it takes decades to get really good at it ...I have been playing for 35 years I was so eager to learn pentatonic in beginning time that it took me just 2hrs to memorize the five pentatonic shape but it took me years to develop meaningful phrase out of it ...scale is just alphabet to make musical phrase..

    • @daveyjones457

      Really think you're completely misutaking what my point was and who this video was made for. I come from piano first, and understand all of the scales you're speaking of, but most people just want to play and enjoy the music, and you can do that without getting deep into theory. Glad you're so advanced, but this wasn't meant for you
