A lot of European artists immigrated to Mexico during WWII, including many Surrealists like Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo, who were drawn to the mysticism of indigenous brujería and the surreal coexistence of past and present, represented by the archeological discoveries ongoing in Mexico City at the time, unearthing pre-colonial artifacts buried under years of history and cultural transformation. I believe the first International Surrealist Art Exhibition was held there as well! (Excuse the run-on sentence, I love this subject of Art History.)

My father is an amazing artist and did a Trompe l'œil on my bedroom wall as a kid, it looked like a 4 pane window opening out to the ocean with an island in the distance. It was so beautiful but his constant dad joke of “I thought I told you to close your window” is probably my favourite part.
