A No Spend Quilt - Stash Busting Scrappy Beginner Friendly

- A no spend quilt is perfect for the beginning of the year. At the beginning of a new year I always say - I am going to save money this year. Not I am going to lose weight or go to the gym. Nope! I am going to control my spending and this no spend quilt is perfect for my first quilt of 2024 and my declaration to spend less money.
Another undertaking is to use the fabric I have which fulfills the no spend quilt; as well as saving money. And I have a LOT! I traveled quite a bit in the last 2 years and I've collected some beautiful fabric. Now I need to use it.
So to both ends, I have created a controlled scrappy no spend quilt that turned out great. I combined a couple different techniques I've seen and came up with a quilt that I really like.

I think the quilt needs another vertical row to finish the half diamond block. It just looks unfinished to me. With that completed, I think the border choice will be easier to determine.
I agree with you!
Me too! Love the blue and white, but it seems unbalanced to me. Then I would add a thin white border and then a wide blue or floral border. Maybe even both!
Yes, I would prefer the blue diamonds be complete on the side and botto.
Me too
I don’t have anymore strips of the jelly roll. 😟
I laughed right out loud at of a stash breaker for a beginner. I started to be a serious quilter at age 54. I had so much fabric already prepared I made large 25 patch baby quilt in just 6 weeks. While techniques and presentations are better our hoarding ways are still there. Lovely class. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing!!
I personally love your comments and facial expressions wen your doing these tutorials…So very funny
Awww thank you so much
Lighter blue than the floral is what I would like
❤️
Love a border, I like the darker solid and a wide floral.
Great idea
Hi April! I like the darker with the floral after. Pretty!
Thank you so much! ❤️
The whole Time you were making it I kept saying, Add a strip at the end of the white so you have a small square in the middle of the white block. You read my mind. It’s lovely
Thank you. I"m so glad you were guiding me - maybe I am telepathic. ;-). Now could you tell me when I make a mistake too? LOL. Thank you so much for watching.
April
So many possibilities
Clever and personable by choice. Great idea
thank you!
April, I would say thin solid darker blue border first, wider floral border second. I also would suggest one more row of blocks to make the top more symmetrical. Have a Wonderful 2024. 🎶💐💖
Great idea!
I have read everyones lovely replies, I have to say I would finish the side and bottom to make full diamonds( just my preference) and a thin dark border and light wider border . It looks so refreshing in the blues . Thank you for sharing with us April xx
Great idea!
My favorite colors are blue and white. And I love what I just saw on the begining. Oh and if any one is wondering - - on another channel someone assumed that I was a middle age man. No ladies that is my precious, loving, and amazing husband. So please do not judge a book by its cover. April you have the most wonderful ideas for blocks - - I need a brain that works like yours. Thanks for all the wonderful idead!!!
Hi Jan... Thank you so much for witching my channel.... I really appreciate your kind comments
I love BLUE and WHITE too
The blues are beautiful but there is no center. I suggest adding one more half column to the blues on the right and make it rectangular. It looks unfinished. Love what you did with the white block centers. A solid blue or white border would frame your blocks nicely with all the pattern then bind it with the patterned fabric if it doesn’t clash with your backing.
Great suggestion!
Loved the Saints shirt!! Dark blue then print!!
Me too! Go Saints!!!
That pop in the middle was a brilliant idea! I think the dark looks good up against your quilt with the Pioneer Woman finishing it off. It will be beautiful either way. I just had my dark chocolate dove candy!!
Oh thank you!
I love the Scooby-Doo fabric on your cutting table ❤
Me too!!
Loved your Saints shirt. I’m from Mississippi.
Awesome! Thank you!
I would have done 1 vertical row on the right and 1 more row across the bottom. It would balance out quilt better.. a solid color before floral. God bless.
Love this idea
Darker blue and then flowers blue. Give Oliver a hug from me.
i have some lovely jelly rolls I could do this with. I like it. I also like your creative process, and how you experiment!
Thanks so much 😊
I like the pop of color in the center of the white squares.
❤️
I like the diamond that you put in the white negative space! I personally would have balanced the quilt with a set of the half square triangles on both sides. Beautiful color choices! I would do a small solid border and then a larger measurement of the pioneer women fabric for the borders.
I like that idea. 💡
I agree with another comment I think you need to finish the half diamond block and then look at the border choice. I love your channel you give me lots of inspiration. I am a new quilter living in the north east of England and I wish we had the quilt shops you have for fabric etc.Keep up the good work April xxx
I love this suggestion
Thank you for your comment and for watching my channel
The darker blue and print looks best.
I was talking to you-LOL while I was watching your video and I said exactly what you did before you had your epiphanies!! I think a white inner border would work well. You have a lot of movement in your blue strips. It’s beautiful whatever you decide. I want to see it finished up! Your backing choice and quilt pattern.
lol
I must have heard you!!!
Finished quilt is in progress
So pretty! we are doing a scrappy string quilt on Retreat in March. I think I’ll do mine this way!
I would put a small white border, then floral then blue 😊
Love it
I think the darker blue makes the lighter ones and the white pop out. It would look amazing with a dark border. (But I'm a beginner ...lol) Love watching you, Ky is my birth place and I miss being there! Your videos bring me closer to home! Thank you!)
It is okay if you’re a beginner. Color is color. And your opinion is your opinion. No experience required. Glad I could bring you closer to home. 😀
I would go with white or a blue that matches the medium blues better, then the floral print. 😊💛
Great idea!!
I like the dark fabric with the floral or a white border then the light blue.
I love the quilt top ❤
❤️
Lighter blue than a thicker floral border. Love it!!
Yes! Thank you!
Look at you sporting a NOLA Saints shirt…Go Saints! ⚜️ Loving your videos, April; my friend sent a link and happy she did…cute host, fun projects and entertaining. Have a Saintsational New Year! 🤸♀️🎀🤸♀️
Awesome! Thank you!
Darker blue, option 2 then floral
I think the quilt looks good. I think the solid border first to give the eye a place to rest. However I think more of a royal blue or medium blue solid might blend more with your strips. On my screen the two blues seemed a different tone than quilt blocks. Hope that helps. Anyone you give it to will love it. As you said who doesn’t love a blue quilt.
❤️. Thank you
Yes. It is OK to be square. Your blue and white scraps are on point (they now look like Diamonds). "Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend". I love your blue and white Diamonds quilt top. Wonderful. This looks fun and easy. Thank you.
That is the perfect name for the quilt. Diamonds are a girls best friend! 💎
Yes. I agree. @@aprilscraftroom
Narrow white, flower then solid blue binding . Love the color scheme.
I love your quilt. I like the darker blue.
❤️
If you sew strips together and then cut a square, layer it with a matching solid square, draw the line corner to corner and sew on both sides of the line you will have 2 HST at a time.
Wouldn’t the stripes be verticals instead of horizontal? Because I thought the same thing when I sewed the strips together. LOL. I think I am missing g something. 😃
@@aprilscraftroom I'll have to look at it again. I've seen it done on several videos. Now If I can find them. :-)
If you angle your square ruler so that the strips aren’t straight vertically or straight horizontally then it should work. Use the 45 degree line on the square ruler to line up with the strips so that way they will be angled correctly for the HST blocks
I like the idea of a narrow or flanged dark border then floral border. The dark seems to make the rest of the quilt pop. Love Blue and white quilts❤
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with me on this
I just love your quilts .. i love the bigger blocks too .. i think a small white border then the floral ..thanks for the great videos
Glad you like them!
2.5 inch white then a larger dark border. I've had chocolate already this morning . Thank you.
Wonderful!
I like the darker before the floral border. I love a blue and white quilt and this has got my creative juices going. Watch out for a blue and white quilt from my studio💙🤍💙🤍💙🤍🥰🐥
Sounds great!
Thanks for watching my channel Di
white border, then the floral border!
❤️
I would put the lighter of the two solids blues as a border and then the floral. I would also add another row to finish off your diamonds, so it would be 5 across and 6 down. Just my thoughts.
Love the colors and design!! So pretty!!
Great idea!
April
Good morning April,
Lovvvvve the blue n white, so pretty!
This pattern looks just like,
“Summer in the Park Revamped”
BUT, that pattern only had 3 strips!
And was done tube style.
I really love this one better, thanks for sharing!
❤️
Love blue and white quilts. I think white and then print.
❤️
Very pretty April! I would try a white then the print. I can only see that in my mind of course.
Solid and then pioneer fabric!
Love it
I like the darker blue with the floral for the border. Bind it with the other blue or white.
❤️
I would skip the border altogether and bind it off in that lighter fabric! It’s a modern looking design so skipping border would be considered a more modern finish. Fun way to use jelly roll strips!
Great idea
Beautiful quilt! You’re right, who doesn’t like a blue & white quilt?
Right?!
Darker fabric then the floral for sure!!! And a white binding
❤️
The snowball corners absolutely makes the block pop! Great idea! Like some other comments, I have a hard time with the balance of the blocks. I would use a thin white border then a wide floral border. This is such a cool, easy and fast quilt. Also loved the picture of the small blocks. They really look like a lot of work. Fun to work on over time, but not if a quilt is needed right now! Good tips on where to start strips and how to chain piece. Many thanks for your videos. I love watching your creative process!
I’d recommend you consider using the floral boarder on the “white” sides (left and top) and a true solid blue on the right and bottom. True meaning no variations of color like you mentioned as a “solid”.
I’m really loving this idea! I wonder what I can make using this technique?!
I’m always happy to see your supersized ideas!
What an awesome idea! I might have to do this.
April
Another beautiful quilt. I think it needs a narrow white boarder then the floral.
❤️
Option 2 slighter solid then floral is my favorite. Pretty quilt.
Love it
Love your sassiness and your quilt!
Thank you
I love the colors. I'd have to finish the diamonds. Then I think I'd go with a white border first, followed by something with a softer blue background with a lighter design print.
Great idea!
I like option 2 sewn with the floral on the outside. Thank you for the video. ❤Like the strip set you used. I have lonely jelly roll sets in the waiting room. Your idea is perfect for them. I have done string blocks before but haven’t used 2.5” strips on just a half of the square.
❤️
Im liking the idea of a skinny white border with the pioneer woman fabric and a darker blue binding. Love the quilt top! And yeah…. Who doesnt love blue and white!!
❤️
I think one more column to complete the diamonds on right. I would put a white border then one of the blue. Thanks for your video.
Solid plus floral. Lighter blue for solid.
My favorite color! Pretty!
Same!!
I think I'd like a white solid border, then the floral.
Me too
Super !! Thank you April !!
Love these blocks!!! Who doesn't love blue & white, and I love, love, love controlled scrappy!!! ❤🎉❤
❤️
I think the diamonds should be completed too. On the side and bottom. And I rather liked the dark solid border and then the print. I think the blue and white is gorgeous. And loved the pop of blue in the center of the white.
❤️
A narrow solid and the dark floral would look great.
❤️
Oooooo I like! The little squares in the centers really perk it up. As for borders, 2 of them, lighter blue then floral.
❤️
Beautiful!
Thank you!
Dark and then floral!
Love this
Love the quilt I would put a small white border then the floral
❤️
In my humble opinion, the darker then floral. Pretty though.
Adding those little corner pieces was an inspired idea!
❤️
White and then floral is my vote❤
❤️
I like it! Looking forward to seeing it with borders.
I’d choose option five with dark also for the binding.
Hersheys Kiss!
I loved out it turned out, and blue isn't even my favorite color! I can't wait to
see which of your options you go with. Happy Quilting!
Thank you! You too!
I like a narrow option 3 border, followed by the Pioneer Woman as a slightly wider border. And maybe bind with Option 3. It's a beautiful quilt.
❤️
Love the idea and the colors. The borders not so much, I would probably add a pop of another color to the border. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the tips!
I love the ‘squares’ in the middle 👍 I think I’d like the two plain fabrics as the border 🤔 Everyone loves a blue and white quilt ❤🇬🇧
❤️
Dark inner looks good
❤️
Very pretty April
Thank you
The first option looks lovely. I'm loving how this all came together!
Thanks
That is so Awesome
I would add a white border on the edges with the blue triangles, on the edges with the white triangles I would add a dark border…then add the print border all the way around! This Kay loves this quilt!😊
Thank you! That is an awesome idea. And it would give a lot of interest to the quilt. :-)
April
Another very pretty quilt, however I would put another vertical row as my eye is asking where it is. I would then use the darker blue or a thin white border and then the floral border would finish it off nicely
Thanks for the tip!
I think I would fold the white square in a triangle, then pencil mark the 1/4th line . Then put the first strip on the line
I wouldn't have to worry about eyeing the stitch 1/4 inch stich line. Dark blue border, then the blue floral.
Love this
Love the idea of a border. Use a 2" white border then add a 4 to 6 inch print border.
❤️
Hi April love the quilt. I like the lighter solid with the floral for the border. Such inspiring videos! ❤
Thank you so much!
love it! ty for inspirations.
You are so welcome!
Love this quilt
thank you so much
I'm thinking the dark border then the floral? I'm torn on that one too. I'm sure which ever way you choose will be lovely. Thank you for sharing. HAPPY NEW YEAR! 🎉🎉🥂🍾🎉🎉
Oh thank you! ❤️
Love this pattern! The Pioneer fabric will be wonderful border!
I think so too!
Youre my favorite youtube quilter. I learn so much from you. I also feel more positive with projects and have more motivation when watching you and sewing along than others who are quilt snobs. You inspire me to be creative, have fun and be happy in my art. Thank you.
Same here. I like Darelene Michaud too, both are "regular gals", not a snobby bone in either one. We do ❤ our April!
Awwww
Thank you so much for watching my channel
I like your controlled scrappy quilt!! Also like the small triangles in the center of the white square. Whichever way you decide on the borders will look great!
Beautiful
Thank you
I would make a stopper of the lighter blue and then the floral
❤️
Love a scrappy quilt!! Thank you for all your great videos.
You are so welcome!
Saved this to my favorites, I want to try all the different layouts, so creative.
Yay! Thank you!
What a good idea !!!
I think so too!
Dark blue then a light
❤️
I 'reset' on my quilts frequently. Sometimes it is for hours, sometimes for a couple of days. It always gets resolved.
❤️
