Of course the Mister will probalby enable higher resolutions than 480i, but that's the top resolution of the average SD 4:3 CRT, and that is all I am really interested in playing the N64 on, 480i is the seet spot for N64 & PS1 imo.

Congratulations on your freedom. Ive been emulating for many years. And all these programs Nintendo online are churning out are pretty much emulators too, except they are badly made with stolen code. Best way to play classic games, other their original platform or with a flashcart, is to play on a PC emulator with a USB controller.
Like i play GameCube on dolphin with a USB 4 port and an original controller. All on my laptop. Same with Gameboy advance, psp, ps1, n64. And with my dslite i have a r4 flashcart (got a gba flashcart on my wishlist, will have it by December) and my 3ds has CFW so ive filled it with games from nes/snes to gba/ds. And of course select 3ds titles. I have a wiiu with CFW as well that i use to play Zelda BOTW. And two CFW PS3s that i rarely use nowadays and only have cause ps3 emulation isnt that good especially on my laptop.
Dont let these big companies milk your nostalgia for money if they arnt gonna put the necessary effort into the product. Especially when there are free alternatives that are better and have had years of effort and improvement.

The increased price is absolutely ridiculous, especially when most N64 emulators can offer a far better experience. I appreciate that Nintendo are trying to get these great games to a wider audience, but honestly I can't see many of their fans bothering. As we all know, Nintendo will milk everything they can with their classics. They know outside emulators are hard to stop so they figure why not make money out of it instead. I get it, however, if you're going to put it out there then do it for the fans. Make the expansion experience worth it. They didn't even include most of the games and I know why. They are thinking of remakes. First, they screwed up on the Zelda anniversary, then they kept quiet about Switch pro and released OLED (milking it) instead; Skyward Sword Amiibo? and now this expansion pack. Why did they time the Mario Collection? Also, their first party titles never rarely drop below $30 (sale). None of this equates to them even listening/hearing it out from their fan base. Oh and any fanmade games/items will be taken down quickly. I love Nintendo games, but will never defend their greed. Their business strategy has not broke yet, so they won't fix it.

Hey Glenn. I think the increased high end in the sound is likely due to the switch having enough CPU power to output at 48kHz sample rate.
N64 often had to compress the audio to a lower sample rate, I've heard audio processing was shared with graphics processing on the system and that's why multiplayer often cut or decreased the quality of the music.
You can do a quick wiki for Nyquist rate if you're interested in how sample rates work!

So on top of paying more for the service, you have to pay 50 Dollars American for the controller. It's just bad all around. Great video!

"Stock controller" as in the Joycons? Yeah... The analog sticks on each aren't comfortable in general lmao. The way they're designed are for portability rather than accuracy. But even then if you want to upgrade to a Pro Controller (a massive upgrade), I hope you do it for other Switch games (like I did for Splatoon 2 - totally worth it cause I always come back at it) rather than playing the classic ones. There are other options for emulation besides that console after all... Alternatives that don't require a subscription.
Something that surprised me about the Switch's internet is Modern Vintage Gamer's finding that Ethernet possibly won't give you faster connection, due the shared bandwidth with the console's USB C video and audio, and the other USB ports. He talks in detail on his OLED review.
Imo Nintendo is trying a bit too hard on offering expensive options... Like why else would they bundle N64, Genesis, and other games' DLC (who says it's only gonna be Animal Crossing) all in one subscription? That killed my interest on even trying lmao... I was really looking forward to playing online - even with mediocre connectivity, but I don't have an income to throw money at what I already knew is a subpar offering. I can't really think of any of my friends who are willing to do the same - only one of them (apparently) is in an good financial situation, and he doesn't want to try.

People online generally have the attitude of "but you lose it if you cancel your subscription," and my thought is that I doubt any of us are gonna be playing the new animal crossing stuff after a 2nd full year of AC. I also seriously doubt that ACNH dlc will be the only dlc included with the pass. If I'm wrong, we can go back to the old plan next year. At this point the promise of portable Banjo Kazooie, og Majora's Mask, and Paper Mario are just bonuses for me.

The game is a lot more difficult than the original game considering the screen is purposely flipped. They also think that a majority of the playerbase would not like it. It was made available to play natively through a bonus disc that they made for the Nintendo GameCube. The original game is also included on there as well. Although I’ve been longing to play OoT on a big screen.... 1) I have zero desire for sega games 2)couldn’t even get the controller for 64 games 3) do not play animal crossing. 4) the N64 games are way too few. N64 should have just been part of the 20 dollar a year tier.
To make 60 dollars a worthy price, maybe add games from the last 10 years to the service, add more free DLC passes besides just Animal Crossing, add Pokemon Home for free, and most importantly, have actually good online services.

What you're seeing graphically is probably just the contrast between HD rendering and all the low-quality models and textures.
The high resolution brings out the details really nicely on high-detail and/or distant objects, but when things get too close, they look just as rough as ever.

I bought it this morning very reluctantly…and being a die hard N64 and Mega Drive fan I spent £34ish for upgrade up front (I thought it was going to be a monthly payment).
In short, it’s horrible. Just horrible. The controls on almost every game feel completely unnatural and inverted…it tells you to press a certain button to see the controls but from what I can see (again this was just before work) it didn’t have any function to alter the controls. So that means I have to buy the N64 controller? For £50? Nintendo have taken SO much of my money over the years and this is one the first times I have felt completely and utterly ripped off.
I’m going to ATTEMPT to get my money back in some way, I’m sure this will never happen but hey ho. This is hands down the worst online service provided and when you look at what Microsoft is doing, Nintendo should actually be ashamed of themselves, capitalising on players they KNOW who will blindly buy this with rose tinted glasses. Makes sense about the analog stick. The N64 analog stick has a very small deadzone, such that you could rotate all angles in Mario 64 without even moving from one spot. It's really hard for a lot of modern analog sticks to match that quality. I know the switch joycons have a small amount of travel too so I bet its extra sensitive.
I imagine they lowered the interpolation quality for the music audio, which makes it pretty tinny. I cant remember the exact method the N64 used, whether it was nearest, linear, cubic, or sinc. But I dont think it's nearest since that is very tinny, nor was it as advanced as sinc interpolation. So in my head it must have been linear or slightly better.
I do own a switch, but since I own a flash cart, retrotink 2x, and a brawler 64, I already have these games (and more) playable. So I don't need an extra service for them.

They really should have done but I don’t think it’ll happen now

_But if you have a buddy who has the service and didn't buy the controller, do get it._ Very useful for PC emulation due to Bluetooth support, battery lasts a while and RetroArch with Parsec is a far more reliable netplay option.
As for how they could just improve their emulators in general, very simple. Free games remain free when subscribed, but when not subscribed, they're all available for purchase. This would be through a shop icon they can add on the emulators' menus. And for developers who want to opt in their old games and would prefer individualized sale, it encourages more games to be added regularly. And if you want netplay with them, you can just buy the regular NSO service.
If I want to complement Nintendo's side, the $20 a year still has online, but the N64 and Mega Drive emulators don't get their free games, but can still have accessible shop icons on their emulators so that you can choose what to buy and use your existing NSO subscription to play them online.
But hey, I suppose I should stop myself well I'm ahead. That sounds way too practical for Nintendo.

I bought it the minute it came out and I've been enjoying it immensely. My kids and I have been enjoying winback, starfox, and Zelda. I haven't noticed any issues. They play the exact same way they did when I was a kid (save the controller layouts). I prefer the pro controller so getting to play my favorite games on a more preferable controller is awesome. Winback is definitely playable. I don't know why you would tell people it isn't.

Winback is all about headshots, the sticks are too sensitive to regularly hit them which is possible in the n64 original hardware.

@@n64glennplant I would have to disagree with you. Headshots aren't necessary to win this game. They aren't even something I would advise aiming for. There is a lock on feature that works perfectly well. If it's not your cup of tea that's one thing, but saying the game is unplayable seems disingenuous to me. The game works just as intended and just as well as it did years ago.

The default controller set up is a pain. I plugged the gamecube controller in for Oot and then became furious to find that Z wasn't mapped to L. With the gamecube controller you can't physically remap the buttons like the normal controllers

    • @n64glennplant
      @n64glennplant  3 года назад

Yeah with any controller they aren’t allowing remapping and so it’s terrible layout for many games

After 2 years Nintendo added 23 more games.
Still no widescreen options (similar to Goldeneye) still no way to change those borders, and limited button mapping. (Can’t map the C buttons to other buttons)
What are your thoughts 2 years later?

Stopped using it after a few weeks, have real hardware which I prefer over nintendos lacklustre emulation efforts on switch. Hopefully one day they’ll put some effort into their back catalogue

in 60hz mode star fox runs too fast, this was the same issue with the Wii and Wii U versions. I'll stick to my RGB modded n64. Nintendo got my money but next time no way, this was a really poor effort from them. They should have got M2 to do the ports and give us lots of options.

Not paying a cent for this expansion until they improve this in the coming months. Rise up Nintendo fans.
