The enlightenment did away with the idea of evil, and promoted 'the self' as the greatest good. Hopefully a second enlightenment would reintroduce it.

I am a 51 year old man. I lost my mom from breast cancer when I was just seven. Years later I lost my Dad in 2000. It's been 23 years and yet it feels like just yesterday. Through all this I have never truly lost my faith. I have strayed many times with alcohol and drugs but I overcame these addictions and temptations through the grace of God. I have been through many struggles in my life and through it all my faith only becomes stronger. One thing that I have always known as a Christian is that being Christian and believing in God doesn't mean that your life will somehow be without pain and suffering. I've noticed that some people think that is what Christians believe. Jesus suffered more then any of us could ever imagine. From the time of His birth till His crucifixion He was wanted dead. The suffering that we go through in our lives helps us to understand if even just a little bit what Jesus our Savior went through and brings us closer to our Lord!

@@nothingbutthetruth3227 I could be wrong but I'd say that the drugs aren't the serpent. Just as a rifle, a medicine, a book, a fishing rod are neither good or bad on their own, and require someone to do something with them to be so, drugs are just chemicals. I'm an addict myself, and for me at least like lots of others, by the time we hit a point where we start using, we've already been on that road for a long time.
In my life the serpent is and was my own will, my trauma, my defects. Those are the serpent and the drugs were the conversation with it, if you will. It was going to manipulate and convince and bite me regardless, and substances were just the specific way in which is happened. As addicts if we stop using, we've only addressed a tiny portion of the problem, and we'll never get better if that's all we do. Honesty, charity, community, and surrender are what get us through.
Again this is just my perspective, and my experience. I wish you and mr Cohen up there the best, thanks for mentioning your experiences : )

I am a highly open person who grew up in a secular non religious environment with Christianity somewhat there but mostly at a distance. I’m still amazed by how this information cuts through and holds such weight for me. I believe Jordan’s talks have been a bridge for many like me who would not have been receptive to Christianity to this degree otherwise. Having dealt with some malevolence and a lot of suffering in the last few years, I don’t know if I would still be here if it weren’t for some understanding of this. Tell me why is it that, if God is good, why is there evil if he created everything? Why do we suffer disease, misfortune and such horrible health problems at birth even if God loves us all ? A common argument to our suffering I heard is because God gave us freedom, but giving us freedom and allowing us to succumb to evil is like allowing a child do what it wants and not teach it anything

I'll be 70 this year. Looking back at lived life, I find that the things we really value were the times of sacrifice and suffering. Carrying responsibility, not shirking duty, these were, and are, valuable when looking in retrospect. We have divine design to be doers, to carry the load, to not be weak, but strong. I tried to take a month off at a condo on the coast. I could not make it but 3 weeks, I was dying of leisure and boredom. We aren't designed for doing nothing but leisure. Dr. Peterson has helped me so much in this area, to keep going, people are counting on me to not quit and just sit on the porch and watch the birds. I'm trying to carry as much responsibility as I can bear. I need that.

I'm 70 too, and it is wonderful to take times of "rest" as needed, or just sit in the beautiful garden I have worked to create (!) and soak in peace and nature. However, our lives need to be purposeful and meaningful, or we are just ... inert. What a curse that would be!

I disagree with this sentiment (although I can see the point he was getting at). This would imply people who do not have a relationship with Christ are not able to see Christ in other people. Just as his anecdote with the nurse and colleague who noticed something different about the way she did her job, so do people who do not know Christ discern something different about people who have a relationship with Him, and are actively living it out. This is also evident in the Bible when people gathered around Jesus because they knew there was something "different" about Him. Just because you don't have a characteristic/trait etc., doesn't mean you can't notice it in others.

@@NigelingTon no. It’s a call to a relationship with God. You can see how God interacts and loves and calls out to man. To remove God from the equation but use His words to your end will inevitably lead to nought.
All you will have are pseudo-religious bigots who think they are “good” without the groundbreaking, heart wrenching work that God needs to do in our hearts. This cannot be done without a relationship with God.
The same bible says, Jer 17:9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?”
It kind of follows from the fact that “There is not a righteous man on earth who does what is right and never sins.” Ecc 7:20
You can’t trust your heart for guidance (and pick and choose what you want to believe about God or the bible) as it will deceive you into wanting things which are ultimately not good. Hence defeating the point to which you started looking into the bible in the first place.

The doctors said i would change. They said my wife and family would leave me. I have changed but it has brought us so much closer. There historically are many unnecessary hoops, hurdles, add-on's and counterfeits that Catholicism has that Christian faiths don't (ie, baptism, Pentecostalism). I understand why people leave catholicism, but I don't understand how they can leave Christ.
The driving force to heaven shouldn't be through church or religion, but Christ himself who frees us from destructive sin. Many people have turned away from Christ because of the horrible things done through the catholic church, including those in my own family. But taking them out of that system allows them to focus on Christ alone.
Hope you're doing better mate, looking for truth, freedom and liberty in Christ :-)

    • @Starbat88
      @Starbat88 2 года назад +2

@@Trenasist By "Focusing on Christ alone," I assume you mean just reading scripture and "interpreting" it yourself.
That's the Protestant heresy of "Sola scriptura", which assumes that a regular layman can come to know the "Truth", just by reading his Bible. (Anything can be an idol, depending on how you use it, including the Bible.)
The Real truth is that there is no way to "interpret" scripture, except through the proper philosophical mindset and discipline, as well as a deep knowledge of All of scripture; not just parts of it. That's why educated church authorities are necessary. ANY interpretation entails an over-arching ethical framework or bias. There is no getting away from that, no matter your denomination. The Catholic Church derives its interpretations from the thoughts and knowledge and traditions of the actual Church Fathers, who date back to the early first millennium.
Who is more trustworthy? An educated Christian who lived no more than a handful of generations away from the time of Christ? Or Martin Luther, who was known to have a problem with scrupulosity, and promoted the practice of Picking and Choosing what parts of scripture to adhere to, and how to interpret them. No room for any authority or standard deriving directly from early Church tradition.
That's dangerous, if you care at all about your eternal salvation. Just look at how many Protestant denominations have sprouted up in the last 500 years. They've taken the teachings of Christ and scattered them to the wind.
And as for the "horrible things" the Catholic Church has done; no true Catholic is under any delusions that the Church is perfect. It's an institution run by fallen mortal men, like any other. But nonetheless, it was appointed by Christ himself, through Saint Peter. Like it or not, the Church is Christ's representative on this fallen Earth. We must respect the office, even if we don't always respect those who hold it. You may not like the current US President, for instance, but you still need to respect the office. Same deal with the Church. The important thing is to understand Catholic teaching according to what the Church fathers and the saints taught, and to not merely go by what some current or recent bad actors might have done, including those who may be in your own family.
Also, those so-called "unnecessary hoops, hurdles, add-on's and counterfeits" are in fact useful tools and disciplines, which are grounded in early Church tradition if not necessarily in scripture, that help us to grow in holiness, and to live according to the Grace of Christ. That needs to be born out in our moral actions in life. Protestants "protest" this, saying "works don't matter", and "Christ alone" brings salvation.
But the truth there is that ANYone can "say" they believe and accept Christ. Anyone can merely think that. But if our words and our thoughts say one thing, and our actions say another, which are we to believe? Which is Christ to believe?
Words are cheap. And actions speak louder than words, as the adage goes. "You will know them by their fruits" (i.e. works).
Dr. Peterson would put it, belief is something you act out; not merely say. And most of us are so fallen that we can't hope to be "perfect" in our actions. Christ's perfection is like an eternally receding horizon. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't try, and show our commitment by our sincere actions and holy disciplines.
      Matthew, Chapter 7:
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’
I sincerely hope that will not include you. I hope you will learn to stop listening to Satan's deceptions, and one day return to the Truth Faith. I will pray for you. ;-)

Nowhere did I say baptism was an add-on.
It is at the least, a declaration of faith. You don't need to be baptised to be saved.

And in that what you do is let the person know of what you feel and what you intent to do, so then the person has to decide to accept their shortcomings and change or continue on that path and in some sense we're morally obligated to do that because why wouldn't you give someone a second chance ? What's the case for it ? If a bitter person make your life hell its not that they are walking towards paradise they are deeper in hell than you are. Jordan Peterson is a very intelligent man and seems very genuine.
      Please remember this though...
There is ONLY ONE Way to the Father and that is Jesus Christ.
JESUS said "I am The WAY The TRUTH and The LIFE no man gets to the Father except by me." John 14:6
      So Matthew 6: 33 ALWAYS
And remember you must be Born Again, the Born Again that JESUS speaks of in The book of John.
Allow the HOLY SPIRIT to lead you and help you understand the Bible.
It's about a RELATIONSHIP with God the Creator and His Son not a church, or cathedral or pastor or priest etc ...they can be good but NO ONE will get you to God the Father except Christ.
It's that simple and that hard in this CrAZy world.
      May Ephesians 3:16-19 be yours.🙏
      May John 14:27 cover you.
It's TOO late in the day to get side tracked.
      John 3:16 wraps up EVERYTHING.
There's no pergatory or need for saints OTHERWISE is Christ lying?
Do we pray in His name or not?
      He loved His mother yes!
But this Mother Mary stuff as well...is not cool.
Mary is hardly mentioned in the Bible.
Anything or one that minimizes or denies the Deity of CHRIST is Anti- CHRIST.
May you search and find absolute TRUTH.
      P.S.
The snakes in the desert part and LOOKING at the SCEPTOR AND BEING HEALED Moses is SHOWING and preparing for CHRIST.
Christ had to be crucified and held up and All those that look upon HIM and believe WILL BE SAVED.
Just as those that looked upon Moses serpent on his stick were saved.
It's SO crucial to get accurate knowledge.
We can be WORLD smart but to KNOW God TRULY know HIM and serve HIM you need be humble and led by Holy Spirit. Jordan needs a study Bible from just a Christian perspective NOT a Catholic perspective.
This is not meaning to put down Jordan, he seems like a good guy in many ways but he's missing the mark and trying to apply a worldly psychological perspective to things+ depth, breadth, length+ width of God.
      ✝️🐑📖😉🕯️🙏
      P.S.
Christ is knocking in the door to your heart Revelation 3:20🙏
ANSWER HIM, get to know HIM. RELEASE your pain by giving it ALL to HIM leave it at the cross that's what HE died for...HE SO knows YOU and your pain/ situation speak to HIM like you would a close friend of whom you respect and love...HE can heal every wound, bring peace to you and fill you with Joy that's lasts through all situations not just a state of happiness due to the "day or environment" Read the BIBLE start with 2nd testament perhaps and get to know CHRIST...the Salvation.🕊️💌

He actually doesn't know much of anything about the Theology he is trying to wrap his brain around from a materialist sense but it's obvious that he is realizing this ignorance and desires answers. It is incredibly humbling to be so intelligent then realizing that you are so ignorant. How cruel the materialistic philosophy is to those it puffs up with pride only to leave them broken.

I had been moved by a number of small realizations that had begun to move me back from my Nihilism. But it was JBP that convinced me that meaning was real. WLC convinced me that Morality was real. And Edward Feser and Catholic Answers convinced me that Catholicism was true.

I may not believe in God, but I know the values being preached in the bible are still correct and the basis for Western Civilization.
Regardless of your religious beliefs (or lack thereof) it remains a very interesting collection of books to study.
Sadly it is a rather tedious read with all the repetition (especially in the Old Testament) such as "God said "x" to Moses. Moses goes to someone else and repeats "X" in its entirety, verbatim. Then he goes to the Israelites and relates "x" in its entirety, verbatim... So you've read three pages and only had a single idea conveyed...that's just painful.

Do u fundalmentaly and literally believe the stories in the Bible? For instance, Noah's ark and the flood? Like do u really think people lived 800 years back then and Noah's family built the ark for every animal to travel there and restart the world ? And the super super fast evolution to get the diversity on earth we see today. It's just hard for me to literally believe many tales / claims in the bible.

Hearing this kind of discussion makes me feel like we're on the verge of a new era of awakening-a modern Renaissance, if you will. It’s inspiring to see that so many others, both at the event and here on RUclips, feel the same way.

One of THE BEST Biblical lectures from JBP. Thanks again, Doc. You're an inspiration and a motivation in the active sense of the word. You inspire people to action. A true activist for the postmodern age.

Thank you, God, for the suffering you allow in my life. Not because it creates resilience, not because it allows me to relate to people, not because it can show me what to avoid, not because I deserve it. Because you allow it in my life. Anything that you allow is something that is good because you *are* Good. I fear You. Amen.

@@thepowerofmyth the literal interpretation is not necessary for the practical belief in God to live the best life you possibly can. That's what I think

@@thepowerofmyth Jesus Christ turn half a dozen loaves of bread and fish into a feast for hundreds of people and then had a surplus of over dozens of bushels and baskets afterward. That seems hilariously plausible by just a minor miracle from God. I think it would be totally possible through God that Noah could make an Ark and for the miracle being that it could house pairs of every animals and Noah’s family for over 6 months.
You need to detach from purely logical thought when reading the Bible and understand you’re reading stories that describe human nature, our proclivity for vice and violence, and the interventions of God. The bigger part of the Noah story is that Noah was tasked by God for a seemingly impossible task. The measurements for the Ark are actually well known, and if you look into it, that boat was COLOSSAL. Now that’s some damn suffering to bear, especially when the world is mocking you for building it to begin with.

@@thepowerofmyth as for evolution, I think everyone on the planet has pretty much agreed that evolution exists. It’s not abundantly clear WHEN genesis occurs (the beginning of time is When??) but it seems somewhat likely that God would make creatures in the world that are capable of evolutionary adaptation. Additionally, we’ve actually witnessed evolution directly in the course of single human lifetimes across several species of animals and through different processes. Galapagos finches we’re witnessed crossbreeding with a stray finch species and now a new lineage of finches exists there after several generations of cross/interbreeding that has made them significantly genetically unique. There is a species of Mediterranean lizard that scientists moved several members of to a new isolate island with little to no natural food sources. In less than 20 years they witnessed the biological development of whole new internal organs that enabled those transplanted lizards to digest the plant matter on the island. What the hell else do you make of that except that nature is enduring and can adapt impossibly quickly when push comes to shove.
