Lecture I in my Psychological Significance of the Biblical Stories series from May 16th at Isabel Bader Theatre in Toronto. In this lecture, I describe what I consider to be the idea of God, which is at least partly the notion of sovereignty and power, divorced from any concrete sovereign or particular, individual person of power. I also suggest that God, as Father, is something akin to the spirit or pattern inherent in the human hierarchy of authority, which is based in turn on the dominance hierarchies characterizing animals.

To expand on that; sheep will read "how to be better sheep" because they are drawn towards those passages or interpret the text for application to their lives, while "shepards" or "sheepdogs" will be drawn towards other passages or interpret the text to apply to their lives in that way. Really starting to believe the Bible is a mirror for the "inner self".

I was in despair, in the depths of alcoholism, watching my accomplishments, financial situation, and marriage fall apart. I heard JBP's podcast episode titled "Toxic Masculinity" where he discusses his friend's suicide. I had already been well past the point of plotting out a suicide plan and that lecture pulled me from the brink. I'm nearly 500 days sober and have a decent job. I've been volunteering for service in Alcoholics Anonymous and have begun going to church recently in an attempt to improve my spiritual condition and societal bonds further. On top of that I've lost 70 pounds since I got sober. I've never been a patient of Dr. Peterson, but he's done more for my mental health than any psychologist I've ever seen formally. If I could see him today, I'd thank him for talking me off the ledge, even though he never knew he was doing it.

The invention of things like the radio, automobiles, television, airplanes, the worldwide web and so on cries out for the good in people. We all have the choice to choose between fear and love constantly. That for me is free will, I am thankful for the works of the likes of Jordan Peterson. Like you said so much shrunk in so little time its beautiful. Makes me think of how much wisdom is contained in the biblical books and how the people who wrote it struggled with shrinking it and still holding the wisdom within the texts. :)

And we are so lucky to have Jordan Peterson. I think of all of the "soft" sciences, psychology has the most merit and this man is not only a pillar to the scientific community but he had and has the fortitude to seek that which most of us are afraid to pursue. He made the journey to, not a complete, but a better understanding of things and in a way has returned (or returns regularly as anyone who follows him knows that this man is an obsessive ((good for us)) thinker) not to suggest he knows more than you, but to explain his own thinking and thus inspire us to do what he has been doing for decades. That is to truly use the mental capacities we are endowed with to deeply and intimately contemplate and adjust our behaviors accordingly to the ideas, ideals and behaviors with which we identify ourselves.

Jordan Peterson, I grew up without a father, my mother married 5 times and was very unstable. I battled with drug and alcohol abuse, dropped out of school, turned to crime and was a very narcissistic, destructive individual. Sadly, some of this happened while i became a father at 24 years old to a boy, and i ruined my relationship with his mother and essentially my relationship with my son because of the self-destructive nature i nurtured.
Now I'm 41 years old, that boy is 17 and I now have a 5 year old son and 4 year old daughter with another baby due in May 2019. I still struggle with fear of failure and commitment, feelings of inadequacy, but you have helped me to understand that I am not alone and I can be the father I never had.
I want you to know that your words and your ideas have helped me become the father I need to be to break the chain of poverty, addiction and abuse that plagues my family tree so that my children can have a better life than I had. You have helped me find meaning in my life; to improve myself so that those that come after can have a better chance.
Your wisdom combined with that found in the Bible have put me on the path that i was meant to be on. I believe God has sent you as a messenger to guide the men of the world back to Him. You aren't perfect, you are Jordan Peterson, and you are more of a father to me than any other mortal man has ever been.
My family are forever grateful for you. Without meeting you, we love you. You have helped change the future of my family history.

@@critamine @Jaidequel Garcia God is not going to bless Jordan Peterson for being an anti-Christ is my point. It's quite simple.
"Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also"
Peterson quite literally goes out of his way to confuse what it means to put your faith in Christ, which is evil. If he doesn't believe, the easy thing to do is simply to say you agree with the moral framework but do not believe there is a God.
What he is doing is dangerous and dishonest in the extreme - attempting to make a brand new religion out of a fantasy regarding an actual faith tradition creates a thousand thousand points of contention regarding something that cannot be rationally or objectively fixed.
People ought to be honest. If you don't believe Christ is God, then just leave it alone as far as "faith" is concerned, because according to the tradition being referenced, you don't have faith.

It makes no sense to lie and pretend to be Biblical. Full stop. The moral framework in the Bible revolves around what philosophers call "The law of reciprocity". If he likes the law of reciprocity, he should say so.
The Bible has a logical framework. Making nonsense of it is not synonymous with "applying a logical, near scientific framework to faith in God."
The Bible says flatly that those who pretend to be Christian but are not are to be avoided by Christians. So whatever it is he's trying to do, it won't work unless he finds a way to do it without lying about religion.

If I had no religious experience to assert my faith with I believe these two hours alone would have been an alternative path to lead me to the worldview I have now. It's like I'm meeting Jordan on the other side of this journey, where I already believed in God but never attempted to conceptualize how reality reflects God ultimately and how someone of massive intellect would find this conclusion. The BRILLIANCE this man has to offer this world is beyond anything I expected to know in my lifetime. His intellect surpasses the understanding of most, his vocabulary IQ can't be charted... yet we can all come here where he's allowed us into his mind & can dissect it for us in a way we can all comprehend.
It's like God gave him a job to do. To explain the Bible in a way no one has - to bring interest back to the most profound book ever written. If you haven't read it, you're in for a treat! It's not what you think. It's written like the greatest story ever told, yet every word written is TRUTH translated from our Creator to our basic, simple-minded language. It's so beautiful! And Jordan is the perfect person for this job.
You WILL be different after knowing the Bible. Those who are uninformed & uneducated yet adamant, who will continue to say they don't believe without ever reading a single word of the one piece of "evidence" we have left, aren't to be heard in the matters of our Creator, for they can never even imagine.
God forgive them, for they know not what they do.
Moments like this are for those of us who desire truth above all else.

I'm 15 years old and your videos are changing my life! I doubt that there's anyone going to read this, but, who knows...
I've been born in a Christian family (my father is a Pastor) and I've been struggling hard for the past two and a half years with the apparent contradictions between the objective reality and the way Christianity has been taught to me.
I was taught to look at reality through the lenses of Christianity. The problem with that was that, by the time I was 13, I had noticed so many inconsistencies and lack of sophistication in the teachings of Christianity that I couldn't handle it anymore and had to admit to myself that it was necessary for me to figure out another way of interpreting the world and/or Christianity.
Since my father is a pastor, I thought that he could answer my questions and explain to me exactly what certain teachings meant. But turns out that he could barely scratch the surface of the problems I was facing with understanding Christianity.
Jordan B. Peterson's videos have helped me immensely to unpack the mysteries of Christianity and to understand what does it actually mean to have a meaningful life.
I'm pretty sure that if it wasn't for your lectures, I'd be going down the path of becoming nihilistic.
I feel like I'm far from finishing this journey, especially because in your lectures you talk about some quite complicated topics, but you've helped me a lot to find meaning again in life and in religion.
Thank you very much, Dr. Jordan B. Peterson!

Atheism doesn’t say there is no God. Atheism says there is no evidence for God. We don’t claim to know anything. We claim not to believe because any evidence put forth has either been debunked or just not been persuasive. How is this irrational again?
And how are the things I mentioned NOT a result of religion? All of them, except for the statement about fascism, are aimed toward muslims and Islam. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but Muslim countries are theocratic - they have no separation between church and state. Religion is what makes the law in these countries. The Quaran and the Hadith, both Muslim texts, are what people follow in order to justify the above-stated beheadings, suicide bombings, and genital mitulation of kids. Please explain to me how this is NOT because of religion.
As regards to my statement about fascism, the first alliance made by Adolf Hitler was with the Catholic Church. Even during Nazi times, every soldier carried a belt buckle with the words ”Gott Mits Uns” meaning God with Us. In Hitler’s book Mein Kampf, he clearly states that by killing millions of jews he is doing ”God’s work”. Please tell me how this is unrelated to religion.

@@P.H.888 Yes but you must also repent of your sins and believe in Jesus
IS CHRISTIANITY A LICENSE TO SIN?
Christianity is not a license to sin. Christianity means Belief in God and Obedience towards his Commandments. One of his commandments is to repent of sin. God commands Holiness and to bear fruits. To be a Christian means to follow Christ, Jesus was sinless so you should strive for perfection.
Galatians 5: 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 [a]gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

I'm a Christian who came to Christ as a necessity of what I had done to myself in my life . In 2006, I became a Chr ii stian I'm now 68. It saddens me to listen to how our all do not know that the only way to God the father is through been born again. In your body you are mind body, spirit and soul and until you become born again your spirit of inside you is dead or dormant to sin.Vecause every body sins because all fall short of the Glory of God. When you are born again through Jesus Christ who is love your dead to sin and alive in Christ ,this means that your spirit is alive. You are dead inside to sin. When your baptized in water it's just been baptized, but when your baptized when your born again in full immersion you are born of the spirit. You are given the honour of speaking in a heavenly language called tongues. Your given a calling in life. You are given gifts that come alive in you they are spiritual gifts. You also have your mind renewed with this you become a better personas you display the fruits of the spirit, there are 9 of these love, peace, joy, faith, kindness , Gentleness, self-control, patience, and Grace these operate in you as a Christian a Pentacostal Christian. The other gifts are the five fold ministry gifts Apostles, teacher, prophets healers, Speaking in different kinds NDS of tongues, interpretation of tongues ,workers of miracles. You are given the Armour of God , the shoes of peace , the belt of truth, buckled around your waist with the breastplate of righteousness, the helmet of salvation to protect your mind from satanic attacks , the shield of faith,to protect you from satanic attacks and the sword of the spirit which is your Bible NIV or new King James new testament. You read your Bible old and new testament this tells you about God the Creator through a Ng's , queens. Prophets you read the pslams of King David the proverbs is a book on how to treat yourself and other people it gives you wisdom. Then you read the Gospels of Jesus Christ to get to know him as a man of God, a Son of God, a Miracle Worker through God Everything that Jesus did he did he did because the father showed him. Because man's sin was great he took their sins as an attonement to the Cross because God the father required it of him . We confess our sins to him everyday and we are forgiven of them through merry and grace not by what we do in works. God wanted to have a relationship with his people so he sent Jesus Christ down to be born again as a human child to experience and show man how to live by God's Word of life The Bible. Jesus had to be baptized full emersion by john the baptist to bring his spirit alive. He was then put in a wilderness state where he was tempted by Satan in different kinds of ways. He was rescued by angels to be given water and food then he went about choosing his apostles in their various fields of occupations. I know you know the Catholic way which puts Mary the mother above God's Chosen one. This is wrong. I want you to read a NIV bible and visit a Pentacostal church because they are Very Very different. We still keep the ten commandments and add to it we add to live God with all your heart, to live your neighbour as yourself because love is God God is Love Jesus Christ is Love He is the Lamb of God who took the sins away on the Cross. He is the healer, the teacher, the liver if your soul the prince of peace. He is known by many names attributing to his character and the character of God. There are three persons in one God the father , God the Son, And God the Holy Spirit. A three fold Trinity. There is so very much more. You need to learn this to know. No one comes to the father except through Jesus Christ. Then you read the Epistles these are the men and the women who went along with Jesus Christ in n his three year Ministry. They also include his brothers as well. With the work of the apostles after the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and how you can get to heaven. I was sexually abused as a child and a adult I've been to all kinds of doctors and specialists physchologist and P psychiatrist and nothing helped me until I became Born Again. Good luck Don't be afraid go to Jesus. I was a Christian for 14:yrs I spoke to Jesus everyday,I sang to Him, Read His Word To Him, But I was hurt by a person in my church who intimidated me in alot of ways , I became scared and I was coming under attack from Satan oh yes he's real . The last day I went to that church as I was walking across the carpark the devil spoke to me he said this is not your church your not welcome here. But I refused and went in anyway. Before the service I went up to the pastor's wife to say hello, and she said to me The devil wants to take you out.? So I left that church because in the service the Holy spirit spoke to me also and he said go home to your family and show them love ,this world has to learn to love one another. So I did. After 2yrs of being away from church and everything I began to loose my peace and the only way I knew how to get it back was from the Prince of Peace Jesus Christ . I'm loved and I'm happy.

In his banned speech at that US college, where he personally donated his own stipend they paid him to come for them to rent a new venue, he started the speech about picking up your cross and embracing the kingdom of God and he ended the same way. Gobbledygook. Pre enlightenment there was little difference in the ethical behaviorus in say.. christianity and islam. Christians in Europe were constantly warring, torturing, burning witches etc. I'm sure Islam was no better. Then came the European enlightenment. To it's credit Christian Europe was amenable to a revolution in thinking. The revolution though, did not come from Christianity. It came from individuals doing work that challenged Christianity. It cam from people who showed that christianity was based on falsehood. Again, credit where credit's due. Islam would never have allowed this. Let's get another thing straight. The bible is a collection of writings with no coherent message. Good in parts, very, very bad in other parts. There's nothing in it that has relevance to a modern understanding of ethics, morality or science.

And this statement goes in line with what Jesus said on Mark 7: 1-9, “Now the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around him. And they saw some of his disciples eat their meal with defiled hands, that is, unwashed ones. (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands up to the elbow, clinging to the tradition of the men of former times, and when they come from the market, they do not eat unless they wash themselves. There are many other traditions that they have received and cling to, such as baptisms of cups, pitchers, and copper vessels.) So these Pharisees and scribes asked him: “Why do your disciples not observe the tradition of the men of former times, but they eat their meal with defiled hands?” He said to them: “Isaiah aptly prophesied about you hypocrites, as it is written, ‘This people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far removed from me. It is in vain that they keep worshipping me, for they teach commands of men as doctrines.’ You let go of the commandment of God and cling to the tradition of men.” Further, he said to them: “You skillfully disregard the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition.”

I've got a feeling that Jordan Peterson is a freemason.
      Exactly because of this.
A lot of the philosophy of freemasonry delves around the concept of analysing and extracting the knowledge of the ancients, as a way to preserve the truths which they had already figured out which we have yet to reach in our age.
Jordan either is a freemason who is a student of such philosophical context... Or he is the manifestation that we are finally intellectually advanced enough to reach the same conclusions.
Not only that but to compare our understanding with the past and realize the similarities.
Thus increasing the interest in trying to further study the past to identify what else they got right.
It is the beginning of a new age, where ancient knowledge and modern analysis will exponentially drive our understanding of truth.

He felt that political science didn't have a good enough answer to that question so he turned to psychology. In psychology, he discovered Carl Jung whose theories claim that mythology/art/religion are made up of symbols from our unconscious minds. Naturally, this led Dr. Peterson to be interested by ancient beliefs and how they can help to understand the human mind.

I dreamt about you today! It was such an emotional encounter and you gifted me my personal bible with my own Gospel in it and you told me to find proof for that in the bible. So I am taking the opportunity to write you.
You have given me an understanding of the bible through RUclips videos which is outside of the box. I started to try to understand it, instead of trying to disprove every phrase. In your lectures you take the bible and apply your perspective, the perspective of a psychologist. You bring an interdisciplinary view into this world, which opens the door wide for further insight.

It is simply astonishing in its depth of scholarship and practical advice, mixed with a spark of humour, conveyed in a manner relevant to all strata’s of society from a deep and profound degree of understanding developed by Professor Jordon Peterson over decades of personal study and practical investigation and application through his clinical experience making this the most important exposition of the Bible I’ve encountered in my 66 years.
However there is a caution I would proffer in relation to the content which is the implied responsibility to heed and act on the knowledge that is disseminated because no-one will be able to claim ignorance of the consequences of their actions either personally or as a society once they have watched this.

Kevin Phillips Ur right. It was more like a cult. But I now understand the love & grace of God, not terrified of Him. That changes everything. We lived in constant fear of a harsh, cruel God, just waiting for us to break the tiniest rule, then kill us & send us to eternal hell fire. I don’t see God like that now. I believe in His love, grace & goodness & finally learned to love myself.

We are all sinners until we turn to Jesus and accept the grace offered through His sacrifice. It is not about what we can do to reach God, but what He has done to reach us. This is the difference between true Christianity and religions even those that call themselves Christian.

This is why free speech is so important! Talking about the Bible, Jesus, etc. in public to Muslims leads to an imprisonment and deportation from the city I live in, Dubai, UAE..

I don't agree with what they're doing but I understand it to some degree. They're very serious about preserving their core culture and traditions because they're a minority in their own country. 90% of the population is immigrant population. Can you imagine how hard it is to be conservative and protective of your culture in that kind of environment? When you preach to people you're causing a disruption in the already fragile fabric of their society.
I'm an ex Muslim but I don't go around preaching it to people so I'm safe so long as I keep it to myself. People have access to the internet and anyone that wants to be educated and enlightened has the ability to do so with minimum limitations. High speed unlimited internet access is easy to come by here.
Again, I don't agree nor condone this but I understand it.

When you see him in person, you can see that process. He paces and you can almost hear the wheels turn. It was a full house in the auditorium and so quiet because people were hanging on every word. No canned speech, he does something new every night with a few recycled areas that he is still massaging in his mind. If you listen to the Australia series, for example, you will hear how he adds to ideas on successive nights.
I've listened to his videos multiple times and always get a new "aha" moment. Am thrilled to see he is penetrating the young black community through reaction videos by channels like Flawdzilla. The comments show that is a group hungry for what Jordan offers.

@@quickmick1112 There will be a VIP package. Not sure how much actual time you get with him but would still be a thrill.
I talked to people all around us while we were waiting for it to start. A gay couple. An interracial engaged couple. A single guy, there alone. Three 'twentysomething' girls. A couple who had been married for 50 years. Two siblings not yet 18. All ages, genders, sexual identities and races.
The thing they universally expressed was GRATITUDE they had found his words, read his books and watched his videos.
I have been to a lot of events in my life, but just seeing that level of respect from such a disparate group of people for the same person --- a clinical psychologist, no less -- was a mind blower. You will have a great time. So glad he is still with us and seems to be gaining strength as he got back to work. I am seeing him again in January, in Texas USA and taking my niece.
I pray he paces himself a bit this tour. He is a treasure to too many to risk losing him again.

Western Civilization is built upon two pillars, Logos (logic) and Theos ( theology), deny either one and our society collapses. Deny Logos and you end up with a witch burning theology, deny Theos and you end up with nihilistic communism.
