    I turned my attention in this lecture to the older of the two creation accounts in Genesis: the story of Adam and Eve. In its few short paragraphs, it covers:
    1. the emergence of human self-consciousness;
    2. mankind's attendant realization of vulnerability, mortality, and death;
    3. the origin of the capacity for willful evil, as the ability to exploit that newly-realized vulnerability;
    4. the emergence of shame as a consequence of that realization;
    5. the shrinking from divine destiny that occurred when shame emerged; and
    6. the beginning of true history, with the self-conscious toil that life in history entails.
    Impossible. Amazing. Breathtaking.
    The only story that can perhaps match it in terms of impact per sentence is that of Cain and Abel, which we discuss in the next lecture: number five in this twelve part series.

    I'm Lebanese... I'm not fluent in English. But i'm so obsessed with this guy that i pause the video on every word that i don't understand, google the word, look up the definition in english with the translation in arabic, then go back in the video to the beginning of the sentence, and listen to the sentence again, then go back to the beginning of the idea, and listen to the full idea again so i can really understand it... and every lecture is taking me nearly 6 hours to watch but it's worthy.
    And at the same time i'm practicing the language.
    This man is helping me so much in my daily life... I've improved so much since i've been listening to JP.

      @@RMT192 12 Rules for Life is aimed at self-help. If your were expecting a more academic approach to the same ideas, you should interest yourself in his first book, the one that took him 30 years to write - Maps of Meaning. That is essentially a textbook to his work. It is the basis for his longest-lasting university course by the same name, and it outlines the technical methods by which he goes about these lectures. I hate to sound like a stoner here, but 10 or so years ago (at 21 about) I tried psilocybin mushrooms, and the experience made me feel very childlike in the world was brand new, exciting and full with joy. We tried them in the forest and it was so exciting and exploratory. I can’t begin to describe it!! It felt like I was 5 years old again and seeing things for the first time. I can see why they are saying there is way more research that needs to be done with these. Life changing!! As Peterson says it was one of the most memorable moments of my life. It definitely was. Anyway, I think it’s a transforming experience that reminds me of your quote. Helps you fulfill the quote. Creativity can do this also, with something you truly enjoy or a hobby.

      jhl365 who was it that crucified Jesus? Was it not those who were in the temples? Hope you aren’t one of those “holier than thou” kinda people, I mean the Bible it’s self says to walk in the path, preachers preach it’s more than hearing the word, it’s living the word.. there’s a big line between having prestigious college degrees in Christianity and being a Christian.. hell, it’s hard to even meet a true Christian in church now days.. the Holy Spirit became the word, we have a light in our conscious we can choose to follow and it’s there if you so choose to truly seek it. There is a reoccurring theme in the Bible, that those chosen by god are not the leaders of the pack, the ones in charge. And outright claim the meek will inherit, and become strong. Wide is the gate, and broad is the road to destruction.. but small is the gate and narrow is the road to life that only few will find.. a light at the end of a tunnel.. a hope.. just like the torches of the olympics, as too is the torch of faith carried to light the world, as a lamp is put on a stand for all to see.

      If you think churches are just full of sinners and that they have no place to judge you, well first off you’re right. But the latter is probably just paranoia and fear of others knowing you’re imperfect.. part of our social structure.. but if church was the place for holy people to gather than there would be no purpose in church or congregation and preaching. Literally it’s a place for sinners to go

    Your lectures have really helped me dig myself out of a dark place. My father commited suicide a few years when I was 16 and I have been dealing with it for 3 years. You really gave me insight in how to better myself and sort all of this out. From the beginning, the Lord was committed to allowing mankind to choose between the real and the false, the good and the evil. That is why He put the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil in the Garden along with the Tree of Life. He did not put the Tree of Knowledge there in order to cause us to stumble, but rather so that we could prove our obedience and love for Him. There can be no true obedience from the heart unless there is the freedom to disobey.

      I think that's because when it comes to Peterson, the "literal" view is never discussed. The main fight between the devout and the atheist generally always get attributed to literal interpretations. Peterson has very carefully dodged (refused to answer) questions regarding his "literal" opinions of religion, for example, "Do you believe in god?" or "Do you think god is real?" etc. He does this because he is in the end, agnostic (total absence of the ability to answer objectively), and for good reason, as every scientist should be agnostic. There is far more depth to religion than silly "literal" interpretations, this is something Peterson has taught me.

It's more like he knows what to think about a lot better than us mortals, which is a byproduct of his intimate experience with the given topic. Knowing what to think about in any given topic allows one to cut down a lot of the unnecessary thoughts by magnitudes.

    This stuff is absolutely fascinating. I'm binge watching this series like its netflix, except with a pen and paper to take notes. I went to a religious school and devoured all the edgy athiest material by Dawkins, Hitchens and Harris when I was 16 or so, and I felt a deep urge to understand these complex problems of life. Nearly a decade later and I'm watching this lectures on the Bible with the same sense of urgency. For me Peterson is really the most keen intellect I've had the pleasure of witnessing since Hitchens. It's almost eerie how his words seem true, not because they necessarily always adhere to logic or reason, but even when speaking metaphorically, they resonate profoundly with what I can only describe as natural law, some very deep level of comprehension.

    At around the 29:00 mark, when Dr. Peterson mentions the idea of regaining something you have lost in childhood as a return to the Beginning, that same idea is clearly said by Jesus in Matthew 18:3:
    “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”
    There’s something so profound in that and it just clicked even more in this video.

    As someone soaked in christian mythology since birth this interpretation is a reconciliation between all the questions I needed to ask and my facination for the Mysteries. The last 10 years have been a constant search for truth since the world view of my childhood cracked open under the pressure of the rational mind that has defined recent history. Swimming through the sea of post modern relativity I saw many latch onto one life boat or another. I even rode along sometimes, never feeling quite at home, always thirsty. There was magic, myth and tragedy floating in the periphery and I long to string them all together to see the web of my life; the stories, the ancestry, the lineage, my place in it, the whole damn spiral. That's what you invoke for me, Dr. Peterson. God Bless ya Bucko

    It’s funny he had a vision like this. I had a similar experience when I was younger. I grew up going to Bible camp (and occasionally church on Sundays when my grandma dragged me). Growing up in church religion as kind of a chore for me and I remember always being very frightened of God. When I was 13 or so I had a dream I was at this Bible camp and I was it this situation where I needed to fight other people to the death. And on this dream I was hurting other people. Crushing them to bits. Beating them to death. And it felt sickening. I remember feeling pure terror. This “it’s me or them” feeling. I hate violence and it terrified and disgusted me to hurt people but I had to do it or else I’d be hurt. So in this dream I was hurting person after person. And at one point I finished and looked up and in a chair in front of me was my pastor with an opened Bible in his hand. And he was looking up at me with this serious expression on his face. Then the dream ended.
    This dream bothered me for weeks. The terror I felt while I was hurting people in the dream. When I was much younger my sadistic older brother used to make my sister and I fight eachother. So I knew the feeling of hurting an innocent person out of fear (and someone I loved) and I hated it. This dream brought back a very similar feeling. But what bothered me most about the dream was the end was the pastor at the end. It was such an odd image. Why was he there? Why was he holding a Bible? I remember I was in the car thinking about this and just thought aloud in my head “God, what does this mean.” And immediately I heard in my head “Ephesians 6:12.” Now you may doubt me when I say this but I was NOT a regular Bible reader. I took out my Bible once a summer for camp and then it went in a box or under my bed. This verse was NOT something I had consciously memorized. So when I heard “Ephesians 6:12” i keep repeating it to myself over and over again and when I got home I dug out my Bible and opened it up to Ephesians 6:12 and immediately got chills.
    “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against the spiritual wickedness in high places”
    I’m 26 now and I’m still trying to sort out the meaning of why I had this dream and why I was meant to have it. But I will never forget it.

      Cool. Thanks for sharing. Really I remembered my own dreams.
      And also thanks for mentioning the verse.
      Had similar dreams. When I overcame desire to watch pon and mastb, a dream came where a large muscular red person became weak and ran off my home as I was saying Jesus.
      That dream wonderes me still. For it was an unseen enemy captivated me to those lusts.
      Thanks a lot. Praise God.

      Great share!! Dreams come to our conscious mind so that we can make a move to resolving a trauma, your prayer to God not only gained you the answer, but verified that there is a Father who cares for you!, and can give you the power over the fears traumas doubts etc. He promised this in John, and yes, the Lord Jesus is the Lord of heaven and earth; he is eternally the Father. God became flesh and dwelt among us: John chapter 1, and 1John chapter 1.
      Read and be whole, Pray and be answered, Ask and it shall be given to you. He is near.

Cut the head off that snake, what will the body of 300 million Americans do? How many people even know how to grow tomatoes? The knowledge Jordan Peterson has been dishing out up until this point has answered questions I've been asking for as long as I can possibly remember. I've been raised in the church by really staunch Christian parents and in 2020, I started trying to find out why it is that I believe in the things I believe in and how do I know that my belief system is functional and sufficient. Because I thought to myself, I need a firm foundation on which to base my worldview because I need to live and thrive in the world, but even more so I want to know that when I get kids, I can teach them how to best live and thrive in this world. And questioning the fundamentals of my beliefs and trying to wrap my head around the human experience fuelled a massive existential crisis. But this man, right here, is teaching the kind of things I need to know to put my life in order. And I really deeply appreciate him for doing all this thinking and for making his lectures public.

      It's almost a meme, sort of like Russell Peter's "Somebody 'roun' here gonna get hurt...". Jordan's reference is apparently an allusion to one of his father's favourite phrases (similar to Russel's gag!) while he was growing up. He uses it almost metphorically to refence a starting point for improving oneself.

  • @speedy3749

    Dear Dr. Peterson,
    there was this question at the end, where the intertwined snakes get associated with DNA. I don't think that one should take that leap in quite that fashion. Let me suggest a much better path of interpretation how double-helixes are so important.
    The double helix is a recurring pattern in nature. It represents a stable state for two strands that are under an unstable tension.
    Think of making a rope. If you twist a strand it is in an unstable state. One way to ease the tension is to let in unravel and disperse into fibers again. The second way is to take a second strand under the same tension and twirl it up as a double helix. And suddenly you have a rather strong rope.
    The same can be seen in nature in a variety of places, for example in vines.
    If you take that picture, the double helix is a symbol of a new stability out of two unstable parts. And strength of the unity, for example in a rope, exceeds the strenth of the parts by far. You can apply this to relationships with far more ease and it makes a much better metaphore.
    I think this is a far more sophisticated origin story than speculating about early humans dreaming up DNA. Although the double helix of the DNA follows the same prinicple of falling into a stable low-energy state, this is only a sign of the recurrence of this pattern.

    What he's talking about around 1:10:00 about something not being real until you name it resonates very well with my own experiences. My brother has had a neurological condition since he was about 7 years old that impacted his ability to walk, and neurologists had no idea what it was. He voluntarily underwent extreme tortures and experiments, genetic testing, surgeries, and wore prosthetics, just trying to narrow down the possibilities trying to find a NAME for it, because even if they told him he had ALS or something fatal, knowing the boundaries and properties of it would be less terrifying than this unknown affliction that was crippling him. He was anxious, neurotic, bitter, and paranoid, and was becoming less able to even take care of himself, as the mystery illness was consuming him.
    For 20 years he had nothing to grapple with, and was losing his mobility and mental health year by year. When he was wheelchair bound, by random happenstance, he mentions to a fairly young and newly certified neurologist that he can only really move around first thing in the morning. This young neurologist, not set in his ways by years of experience, had the thought to try supplementing him with dopamine as if he was a Parkinson's patient, and lo and behold, he rose up out of the chair like a miracle and he could walk again. A couple more tests, and he had a name for his condition - which wasn't Parkinson's; It was something incredibly rare that only affects about 500 people in the entire world. His anxiety and paranoia went away, and with the help of the medication he became radically fit (like, marathon runner fit).
    Once you have a name for something, you can do something about it.

    So many people have turned away from God because they think the Bible is a book of too many rules and not a deeper meaning of life and choices that we make. Like many people, I wish that pastors would teach in this way that Dr. Peterson is teaching, but we can't change anything in churches unless we go to them.

      Sea I just don't think any religion has it right with regards to a god or god and an afterlife. I'm not saying I know either, I am just open to the idea of there being both (Agnostic).
      For example I think its ridiculous that someone burn in hell for all eternity because they may have killed someone. Thats not to say killing is okay, but some kill because they are not balanced in their head. Some are just mentally not their, and if in turn are a product of the Christian god, then is it not gods fault for that flaw? Also how can the people related to the killer be in a heaven without that one loved person. If heaven is a state where all desires are met, but you cannot see your son or daughter because they killed -- is that really a heaven?

    • @aaronandelise
      @aaronandelise 6 лет назад +2

      The Bible should be a personal journey but it is often a weapon that weak people use. It's a book of morals and boundaries of what is right and wrong for you to interpret for your own life. The people in the Bible are you and me, they make mistakes and can be forgiven of them. Choices that people make is not God's fault and hell can be here on Earth as well. The important thing is to remember is that your last dying breath can be one of asking God for forgiveness, allowing your failures to be judged and humbly take responsibility for them. I don't see heaven as getting everything that you want, I see it more of as having full knowledge. But my interpretation of heaven is from my own personal journey into Christianity. Btw, I find it paralyzingly hard to go to church, but if we (the ones that question churches) were to go, it could be a cool place for us to openly talk with like minds.

    • @Deity1

      Sea
      Small groups would actually be better because churches invite too many people at once that it can be like being part of a mob. A small group of ten to twelve people on the other hand is one that can gather in many environments a bar, a restaurant, a home, the local park, etc. They are much more casual and naturally have the atmosphere you want for any kind of discussion. From my own experience the best part of being part of a church wasn't going to hear the preacher it was the dinners and picnics and being invited to people's homes and listening to the adults talk around the table when I didn't feel like hanging out with kids my age. That's what you want.

    • @aaronandelise
      @aaronandelise 6 лет назад +2

      Agreed, with small groups we have a voice, but with large groups we are part of a collective or mob which leaves us vulnerable to the most vocal people and not necessarily the smartest.

      Krait I understand your thinking, it makes logical sense, however the Heaven/Hell according to the Bible is very different from how you’ve described it. Moses killed a man, but we see him rescuing “God’s people”, and he surely went to heaven and found favor with God. This was Old Testament. After Jesus died, salvation through receiving Him, Jesus, became the way to Heaven more practically. Belief in Jesus would invoke repentance (more accurately, “turning” - away from “sin” lifestyle and toward God’s will), and in doing so God wipes away your sin, as Jesus paid the price that you owed on the cross and overcame sin, death, Hell, and the grave. Therefore believing and repenting (it’s a continual subconscious process, a perspective to live by if you will) will free you from the punishment of your sin (hell) and through Jesus, who interceded in your behalf, you are renewed and made righteous in the eyes of God, as if when he looks at you he sees a holy, perfect child, forgiving all of your screw ups and wrongs, and welcoming you with open arms, just like the Parable of the Prodigal Son. God sees believers through the lens, the perspective, of his son Jesus. Now we no longer pay for our own sin through Heaven/Hell, but Christians rejoice because Jesus paid for it in our place, which causes us to find freedom and love “in God” and therefore, that same grace, joy, peace, patience, kindness, etc. flows from out of our hearts to people. Because he Loved and loves us unconditionally, we should then love people without any partiality as well. Christianity, the gospel, is simply that Jesus paid the price for our sin nature that descended through Adam, and we can believe and be saved for eternity. We can receive his “Holy Spirit” (in Greek - breath), and be portions of the abstract “body of Christ” so that we are now Christ all over the world, bringing the Kingdom of Heaven to Earth. :]

    I don't believe in God, but these lectures have given me a lot more respect for Christianity. It's exactly the kind of approach that would convince me. I'm deeply interested in evolutionary biology.
    We need to transition into a new era where we understand these stories and what they mean in this scientific way.
    It's thousands of years of accumulated knowledge of how to live and organize society. Told through stories and metaphors.
    The question is whether people are convinced to behave morally without the literal belief in God, heaven and hell, the carrot and the stick if you will. If we can convince people that heaven and hell are right here on earth depending on how they live their life then I think it would work for many. But there are some who need an external threatening force to stop them from behaving immorally. Good old ostracization and punishment by law should work with these kinds of people, as long as the majority is virtuous.

    Holy cow, his answer to that abortion question blew my mind. I had never looked at it from that perspective, that the problem lied deeper in the sense of our hyper sexualized society. It makes total sense in retrospect.

    • @ketsune23

      @Martin Luther Plenty evidences starting by the fact that the Bible is not well translated. They translated terms such as Elohim as "God" which is wrong. The Bible often uses the term Elohim not only the translation for "God" but also to kings, angels and even other gods such as Chemosh. They translated "Yahweh" as LORD which is wrong again and they covering and removing most of the meaning from the text.
      It reads very different when you read :
      "And the LORD God made Eve from a rib of man"
      from
      "And the Elohim Yahweh made Eve from a rib of man"
      or
      "I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage."
      from
      " I am Yahweh your Elohim, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage"
      Yahweh is a tribal deity worshiped by the tribes of the desert of the southern region of the Sinai. Tribes like the Kenites and Midianites. Indeed the Bible proves this since Jethro the father in law of Moses was a priest of Yahweh and he was a Midianite. Moses borrowed the concept of Yahweh from the Midianites and presented it to Israel as their Elohim. This is even more clear in the book of the Judges where there were lots of tribal wars among the Elohim and their peoples. Yahweh was the Elohim of Israel. The Bible says the house of Jacob (Israel) is the portion of Yahweh. The same way Chemosh the Elohim of the moabites also promised the moabites lands and to defeat the other tribes and their Elohim. Eventually this evolved to a sophisticated monolatry under the Kings period of Israel when they occupied the place of Elohim. The Bible is not a book about God. I do not see God telling human beings to grab their swords and go to kill other humans just because they worship a different Elohim or because they have a different culture. God has nothing to do with that nonsense.
      The Bible has 4000 years? You must be kidding me. The Bible was made in the 4th century AD by a minority in Rome. The Jewish canon was not closed before 2 century AD. Many books were updated and changed like for example the book of Genesis and that is why it has many contradictions. The story of Adam and Eve, the flood, the tower of Babel they were borrowed from Sumerian theology. In fact the Bible is more derived than original. The book of proverbs and the book of psalms none of it is original.
      p-s not event to mention that Yahweh is not Jesus nor the Father. Jesus called Yahweh a murder and a devil and denied him.
