Black & Decker's New Portable A/C Heater - Does it live up to the hype?

  • We live in Florida, so it's always hot. And, since we live in Florida, there are daily lightning storms that particularly like to zap and short control boards in air conditioner compressors that can take a month or longer to install because of supply shortages. Felicia ain't going a month without A/C in a Florida summer. This is why most of us have backup units like the Black and Decker BPP10HWTB. There are several models beginning with BPP05, BPP06 and BPP08 with varying BTUs or features, so the H in our BPP10 suffix stands for HEAT. Hey - once or twice a year it dips below 60 degrees. The horror!
    The BPP10 WB 14,000 BTU unit measures roughly 18 x 13 x 27". It's the perfect air conditioner and heater for dorms, apartments, cabins, campers, offices, bedrooms, garages, or most non-billionaire living rooms. Black and Decker says it'll cool (or H - heat) a room up to 450 square feet. That's a pretty big promise. We used it in our bedroom that's about 180 square feet, and it brought that room down to about 64 degrees (supplementing the central A/C that was set to 78). Buy more than you need if you can afford it. It's better to have too much power than too little. All the Black and Decker BPP series have adjustable fan speeds with an up-and-down air swing. The promised range is cooling down to around 61 degrees Fahrenheit and heat to roughly 88 degrees.
    All portable units make significant noise. The compressor and the fan are serious machinery and they are impossible to silence. The noise didn't really bother us. There is a sleep mode that gradually reduces power and sound to about 58dB.
    It's fully assembled, and as long as it has been standing in the correct upright position for at least 6 hours, all you need to do is connect the exhaust hose, vent it outside, plug it in, and enjoy the coolness. The power cord is a generous 70 inches long and requires a grounded outlet. The foam seal, slider bracket, 5.9 inch diameter air exhaust hose, hose inlet with covered varmint outlet, and a drain hose are all included in the box. The included wireless LCD remote control can be a little peculiar and will require 2 AA batteries that are not included.

    All air conditioners are dehumidifiers. But all dehumidifiers aren't air conditioners. A dehumidifier works by drawing warm air currents into its coils via a fan. The warm air contracts as it’s fed through the refrigerated coils of the machine, and condensation is left inside the dehumidifier. One of our kids had persistent symptoms of respiratory illness, such as coughing and runny nose. Once we got the humidity under 60%, her symptoms magically disappeared! Doc said it could have been mold or dust mites.

      Awesome your daughter is doing better! Not all dehumidifiers work by refrigeration. Some work by mopping the water out of the air with some kind of water-holding material and then squeezing the water away to remove it. The mopping action involves either absorption (where the water soaks right into something) or adsorption (where the water is picked up on the surface of something).

      John, your dehumidifier can become the target for mold, mildew, fungi and bacteria growth on the coils, in the holding tank, the filter and other parts. Keep it clean. I was amazed at how dirty ours became after two months!

    Have you tried using this as a self evaporating unit? I was looking to get one and was wondering if just using it with the exhaust hose would be sufficient.

    • @FreshandFelicia

      We're in Florida near the coast with 60-70% humidity, so there's a lot of drainage. In lesser humid areas, self evap would probably work perfectly.

    I have the same unit, but I'm not able to figure out how to trigger heating? If I increase the temp, it just stops. Am I missing something? Does it require the water pipe to be attached always? I dont seem to have that attached in the unit.

    • @FreshandFelicia
      @FreshandFelicia  9 месяцев назад

      We just tested the heating and ours appears to work fine. It is possible you have a defect in the unit. I would contact customer service, and they should be able to walk you through some troubleshooting steps. The hose isn’t needed for heating, just air conditioning as it pulls humidity out of the air. The water needs somewhere to go.

      There is a considerable thump when the compressor turns off or on, but that happens on ALL the portable units. Honestly, it doesn't really bother us, but I can see how that might be annoying for some people.

    Hi! Do you know the difference between this one BPP10HWTB vs BPT10HWTB. Which one is better?

    • @FreshandFelicia
      @FreshandFelicia  10 месяцев назад

      EXCELLENT question! The Black + Decker BPT10HWTB and BPP10HWTB are very similar - both portable air conditioners with a cooling capacity of 14,000 BTU. They both have a heater and a remote control. The TL/DR difference appears to be the BPT has a remote that's also a thermostat for more accurate cooling. It's unclear if that is also available on the BPP.
      The Black + Decker BPP10HWTB is a portable air conditioner that has a cooling capacity of 14,000 BTU and a heating capacity of 11,500 BTU. It features easy-to-use LED electronic controls and is quiet while you sleep. The BPP10HWTB also comes with rolling casters and side carrying handles for easy maneuverability.
