You bet! Glad you liked the video. Also, I just played this character at level 10. SHADOW BLADE is an absolute must! I had a 21 AC and advantage on CON checks to keep concentration... I dished out some serious damage with Shadow Blade. Sooooo good!
I like the Story and background you developed for the character. I think I would go with Eldritch Knight to gain more spells, as well as Aberrant Mind for additional spells for the character.
I like this. I went a little more complicated with my own Battle Mage build. Deciding upon Armorer Artificer, Hexblade Warlock, and Wizard. Making sure the character can devote more to their Spellcasting Ability without recieving to much downside when it comes to melee combat. The one you built is very great and I think I'll be trying yours out to exsersize the differences.
That sounds like a fun build as well! The Armoror Artificer is a tough subclass for sure! So... I did get to play my Fighter/Sorcerer build and I have to say that SHADOW BLADE is an absolute powerhouse. I dealt so much damage with it... truly amazing!
Just saw a sorc palidin oath of conquest build and started looking for more battle mages. I love dropping big working with my parties repelling blast or Thorn whip. I like what you did here but I think I'll go aberrent kind sorc. Gets a good many spells and you can swap out the ones you won't use for other divination or enchantment spells.
Ever since I've decided to play around with multiclassing I have discovered so many fun battle mage options. Well, at least they look great on paper! For example, you could play a Bladesinger all the way up to 14, then 3 Battlemaster/3 College of Swords. You get a bunch of extra options, even more damage, get to pick up some healing spells as well. It's really good stuff. Other than mechanics, there's also so much great roleplaying potential. Start with a Vuman. Let's say you've got a stereotypical tragic backstory to make this easier for my brain, parents killed, village burned, etc. You have made it your life's goal to hunt those bastards down, whenever, whereever. A combination of Undead Warlock, Conquest/Vengeance Paladin and Shadow Sorcerer would suit this perfectly thematic wise. Mehanics wise you get a cool edgy form with built-in fright, some temp HP, smites, Pally aura, metamagic and a cool doggo. Realize you need more time, A LOT MORE TIME? You can't afford to rest. Aspect of the Moon it is!
Damn, I actually started a build shadow magic plus battle master and was looking for a way to make it better... im lvl 6 so i guess i'll follow the line you made ^^
I have a Fighter(Eldritch Knight)/Warlock(Fiend) multiclass which progresses almost exactly the same way except by level 12 its Fighter 7/Warlock 5, for 3rd level spells and War Magic to eldritch blast and weapon attack. Bonus points if you can use Grasp of Hadar to pull an enemy in range of you Whats cool is Improved Pact Weapon increases your attack roll hy 1, meaning you're getting +5 to hit by 18 Str which saves you an ASI, which can go towards Charisma instead
A small critique: your suboptimal charisma means you have to focus on buffs because your save DC is crap. So is your spell attack bonus. Blur is worthless when you already took mirror image. Maybe that's where you take shadow blade. Darkness/Eyes of Shadow combo is effective, but hurts your party often because unless they are a warlock, they can't see either. Drop it on your enemies and your party can't target them, drop it on yourself and they are effectively blind. It sounds like a great plan, but is more of a solo build. Counter spell might be useful to prevent your haste from being dispelled, but with your cha modifier, anything higher than 3rd level, and you are in tier 2 already at this point, is going to be difficult to counter. Leave that for the full casters. I understand the thought but it will vex you constantly. Fly might be better. Or gaseous form. Honestly, I don't know why you didn't go mountain dwarf. Do you roll a lot of ones? You wouldn't even need to custom the abilities. But that's all. Nice build. It's a lot like eldritch knight, only you can select more than abjuration and evocation.
Some great feedback here Eric, I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to provide some alternative selections. Thank you! You are spot-on with the Darkness evaluation. I was able to play this character in a one-shot and ended up irritating a player with my Magical Darkness combat tricks (although the Warlock with Devil's Sight thought it was amusing). What performed better than expected was Shadow Blade. That spell was so good it was gross. My AC was tough as nails to hit, frustrating the DM a bit... and I always had the Shield spell in my back pocket. I wanted the halfling not only for the lucky feature, but I like the ability of being able to slide underneath the legs of a large creature, lol. Curious as to the recommendation... are you recommending Mountain Dwarf simply because of the +2 / +2 as opposed to the +2 / +1 modifiers? If so, I'm cool trading in the +1 of the halfling for a couple of unique abilities. :) I also agree 100% with blur vs mirror image. Definitely one or the other... And, I like the recommendation of the Fly spell. Definitely gonna pick it up if I get to play this character again. Thanks again Eric for the detailed response... I will be leaning heavily on Shadow Blade, so let me know if there are any ways to make it even more brutal. Cheers!
i know Im randomly asking but does anyone know a tool to get back into an instagram account..? I was dumb lost my login password. I would appreciate any tricks you can give me.
@Jimmy Layne I really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and I'm in the hacking process now. Takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
Very cool build :D But I think, when you are using a Superiority dice build, that I would go and get the Lucky feat at ''lv 11'' level 6 fighter, rather the ASI str +2. it is nice with 1 more damage from that. But getting the lucky feat to maybe get better dice throws with the Superiority dices, both for damage and saves :) when you already have the magical guidance ongoing, and maybe could save that sorcery point, and depending which way this build is going to take the next 2 ASI in fighter, and max out str :) Just what flavor I would go. + it fits in the spirit of the hafling XD Again very cool build
The lucky feat makes a lot of sense and is definitely on theme as well as a worthwhile investment. I would probably take this feat with this character if I were to reach that level, for sure. Glad you liked the build. Thank you for watching Dennis. Cheers!
I want to object to a gish character with so poor intelligence and wisdom saves, although that is largely a matter of preference. Mostly due to tradition my gish preference is a half-elven fighter/mage, and I do appreciate seeing another person choosing Battle Master. Maneuvers are such a nice feature, flexible, customizable and resets with a short rest. It is wonderful for an arcane caster. Another curious observation is focusing on Fighter for early levels. Even in 2e, fighters are stronger at that tier, whilst magic scales better for later levels. 3.x was different, I played a fighter 1/transmuter 5 in Pathfinder, admittedly in melee.
I know it’s been a year since this video has come out, but what do you think of swapping out Battle Master for Echo Knight? My planned character is a Dex Echo Knight (Sentinel)/Shadow Sorcerer Fairy. Someone else suggested that I should dip 1 into Hexblade and go for Charisma as my primary ability score too, but I’m not sure.
Honestly, I really contemplated using Echo Knight here, but, since I had already published a video on the Echo Knight I decided to explore the Battle Master instead. I love the idea of an Echo Knight/Shadow Sorcerer, I think it will serve you well! I'm not sure on the Warlock dip, to be honest. but I do like Echo/Shadow. Hope it works well for you. Reach out anytime. Cheers!
I have a lvl 4 sorc.. I think I will lvl 2 fighter to increase survivalibility with DEX dump for draconic bloodline to boost in AC and use a Scimitar as my melee weapon

Question about booming blade. My DM states that you can booming blade, but that counts as an action, so you can't use BB and attack in the same round. thoughts?
Hi Bill! Booming Blade counts as an action to cast the spell. As part of the resolution of that spell, you get to make a melee attack. So, if you only have one action per turn and will be attacking in melee combat, you would want to cast Booming Blade every turn. However...when you get to 5th level with extra attack you either use your action to cast 1 booming blade or use your attack action followed up with an extra attack. Hope this helps!
@@WallyDM Thank you for the clarification. I'm playing a swashy with 1 level of sorcerer. This was my goal with bb. I'm going to try and change my dm's mind. Thanks for your videos.
@@Genx.WRKG68 Good luck! And yes, have your DM watch this video or google Booming Blade... plenty of resources out there. Also, don't forget that at 5th level you get that extra 1d8 of damage on booming blade... A total of 5 levels, so you could be FIGHTER 4 / SORC 1 and get it.
He’s saying your DM is right. It costs an action to cast the booming blade spell. Your melee attack is a required “ingredient” to cast that spell. Once you first unlock extra attack, you’ll need to choose between using your whole action to cast booming blade (letting you attack once) or using your attack action to attack twice without booming blade.
Stealth was actually from the Soldier background... here's what I did. For the Fighter class, I chose Athletics and Perception as my skills. By choosing "Athletics" at this point in character creation, it will allow me to manipulate the Soldier Background. "If a character would gain the same proficiency from two different sources, he or she can choose a different proficiency of the same kind (skill or tool) instead. Hope this helps! thank you for watching Jerrett!
No worries. Chain Mail gives us 16. Shield bumps that to 18. Then, choosing the Defensive Fighting Style at level 1 fighter gives us a +1, moving our AC to 19. Hope this helps!
You cannot carry the darkness with you on the Longsword unfortunately. The spell says it targets "a point you choose." The same rules apply for the Silence spell.
Actually, you are incorrect. You can cast Darkness on your longsword. You can either select "a point you choose" or "choose an object you are holding or one that is not being worn/carried". The Darkness spell reads as follows (copy + paste from DnD Beyond): Magical darkness spreads from a point you choose within range to fill a 15-foot-radius sphere for the duration. The darkness spreads around corners. A creature with darkvision can't see through this darkness, and nonmagical light can't illuminate it. If the point you choose is on an object you are holding or one that isn't being worn or carried, the darkness emanates from the object and moves with it. Completely covering the source of the darkness with an opaque object, such as a bowl or a helm, blocks the darkness. If any of this spell's area overlaps with an area of light created by a spell of 2nd level or lower, the spell that created the light is dispelled.
I only play gishes and I actively look at youtube videos to find more ideas. I have some critiques. Where is the math? The spell casting is going to limited and it is hard to make an effective damage dealer with long sword. The darkness combo is only reliable if you're the only one in your party. It is hard to take a build seriously when there are questionable mechanics with no math supporting it. I like the theme.
Valid points! I cannot disagree with them. All-in-all, I think a grade of C- for my math, is fair lol. To be honest, I didn't set out to crunch numbers and optimize. My character builds gear toward theme and flavor. And, since you liked the theme, mission accomplished. :-) Thank you for watching, Andy. I appreciate it. Cheers!
I think you built this wrong when you realize that booming blade deals the 1d8 thunder in addition to the weapon’s normal damage. Here’s why. As a draconic sorcerer at level 6 you can add your Charisma damage to your damage roll of your associated dragon type. Using UA we choose Sapphire to make it thunder damage😈 That means with booming blade we deal both STR and CHA in bonus damage. At level 5 with 16s in STR and CHA that 3d8 slashing/thunder and +3 STR + 3 CHA.

Maybe it will be in Fizban's as a character option. I like it. If you decide to focus on Booming Blade, you might want to go Eldritch Knight instead of Battlemaster. At level 7 of EK, you can combine spells with melee attacks so it's not an either or prospect. But that's only if you are going to focus on Booming Blade. And I am not sure if Booming Blade still works with Shadow Blade due to the material component of a physical weapon worth at least 1 gp.
