  • Video from our workshop demonstrating how to bend acoustic guitar sides with a cutaway. In this video we are bending 2mm thick and 110mm wide rosewood sides.
For better result, temperature for bending cutaway sides at least 160 degrees celsius.

Stapleton, can you please tell me where I can find info on how to trace out the sides of a dreadnought CUTAWAY before running them through the disk sander? I cannot locate any info on how to measure/draw out the sides for a 15 foot radius on the back and a 28 foot radius on the top. Thank you.

Thank you for a question. I don't use a disc sander for the backs, I just measure and then sanding it down by hands until back will fit.

Looks very similar to how I did it but I broke the cutwaway side in three places right around the tightest bend. Any ideas as to what could do that?

Looks kinda like you've done this a few times!

Looks great! Is there any spring back after a few days?

Thanks. The most curved part will stay pretty much the same, but ends will spring back a bit. To avoid spring back action, heat up the side 2-3 times and keep it in the bending mold until wood has cooled down completely.

@@StapletonGuitars ... What do you mean by "heat up the sides 2-3 times..."? Please explain. Thank you kindly.

@electricwally So you start with bending the wood by turning the heater blanket on, then the heater will auto turn off when it reaches 160 degrees Celsius; and here you wait for around 15 min. Then turn the power on again & then off. And then one more time (the 3rd time) - if needed. The idea is to get rid of the excess moisture from the wood.

@@StapletonGuitars... you mean each time I turn the heat back on it must get back to 160° celsius each time before I turn it off?
