Bending a Cutaway on a Pipe

  • In this video I am bending the cutaway into the curly maple side for an archtop guitar using a copper pipe and a propane torch.
    When I was first thinking about building hollow bodied instruments decades ago, bending wood was a complete mystery to me and there were few resources available, but I must have eventually found something useful. At first, it was slow and difficult, fraught with many burned and broken pieces of wood, but the process is now routine for me. My hope here is that people who haven't had the opportunity to bend wood will find the video interesting.

    The master at work. I find maple hard to bend but very stable once bent. You make it look so easy but I know it is not. Thanks for sharing this video. Hope you and Rob are doing well.
