I was 9 and didn't think Warrior was human.
Ultimate Warrior was a total piece of garbage human being. Nobody in the wrestling business respected him. He was a joke, a total flash in the pan. All style, No substance . He made Hulk Hogan look like Dynamite Kid. I was a Warrior fan when I was 3-4 years old because I didn’t know any better. Luckily for me he was replaced with a true hero, man of integrity and one of the greatest wrestlers of all-time in Bret the Hitman Hart. I am so grateful that Bret was my childhood hero and not this piece of trash.

Warrior was one of the most over wrestlers ever. If you were a kid when he was in the WWF in the late 80s-early 90's it's almost guaranteed that he was one of your favorites. Incredible Energy and Intensity.

I was one of those kids that hated him for that reason. My favorites were Macho Man, Rick Rude, Ted DiBiase and Honky Tonk.
I found the heels more interesting and rooted against Ultimate Warrior, HH and Brutus the barber. Closest to baby face rooting I ever got was whenever Macho Man would do his random face turns.

Born 81 and ultimate warrior was my favorite. I saw a documentary about him yesterday afternoon and I completely forgot how much I loved that man. I still ca believe he died... I was waiting for that amazing ending to his career but then they hit me with he died and I cried. Still can't believe it

I ❤❤ HIS GIMMICK . That is all. The Ultimate Warrior only cared about how much money he could make. He did NOT care about the business. He walked out on the WWF over money. Look it up it's a fact he no showed because he wanted more money. It explains the absence between the time he was on top and suddenly he disappears from TV.

Yeah because he knew "the business" would chew him up amd spit him out when it came time so he played by his own set of rules. He was his own man and not a puppet to vince to any of "the boys". Yet he cared about other guys getting paid too when he had opportunities he made sure they did. He was still the dude that got over and every kid loved. In defense of Warrior's finishing moves, it was the same as the other big musclebound 80's guys. Hogan's finisher was a simple leg drop after a big boot, Randy's was a top rope elbow, Luger's was the torture rack...most of them were not flashy. But Warrior's press hold then drop got a HUGE pop from the crowd and was always super over, which is all that mattered.

The LIFT was great, but I even forgot about the splash because that part was such a nothing.

I miss Arsenio Hall. He seems to be doing very little nowadays, and that’s his choice I’m sure, but I’d like to see his career make a resurgence. His roles with Eddie Murphy in ‘Coming To America’ were especially fantastic and absolutely hysterical.

With his energy, promos and physique if I had to pick one guy to depict the spirit of 80's and early 90's wrestling I would pick him. He was flawless in his visuals and representation. The grit, the outrageousness, the no-nonsense move-set, the rock hard muscles, the face paint, the expressions etc.
I agree 💯 he was the epitome of the Rock and roll mix of heavy metal and psychedelic synth of the 80s. He was essentially my childhood and many of our childhoods hero flat out. I'm going to be honest, the WORST they speak about him, the more polarizing and impressive his his legacy becomes to me personally.
Other wrestlers hated him because they couldn't achieve what he did in 15 minutes that took them a lifetime

Warrior held Vince up because he didn’t get his full payment from Mania 7,so the event he held him up at then got fired was Summerslam 91.
Yeah I was confused because I remember on multiple occasions that Warrior was fired as soon as he stepped through the curtain at SummerSlam ‘91 not at Wrestlemania VII
He did not hold vince up. Court documents show, he made his demands in July. Summer Slam is in August. Jim asked for more, Vince agreed to more, then he was fired. Vince reneged on the deal him and Jim made In July, then fired him over it.
Owen Hart, Warlord, Randy Savage, Papa Shango, Texas Tornado (the only non-family member to be a pallbearer at his funeral), Bad News Brown, DDP, Chris Jericho, Honky Tonk Man, Sheri Martel, Shawn Michaels, Steve Austin, CM Punk..these are all people that were friends with Warrior or said they had no problems with him and he was easy to get along with. I was around 9 or 10 years old when the Warrior was at his peak in WWF bsck then. He was larger than life. That music and that entrance was amazing to me. His physique looked unreal, like a comic book character came to life. As a kid is was epic stuff.
Mike Tyson was a phenomenon. You wouldn’t buy pay per view to see Tyson go 9 rounds. You wanted to see him knock guys out in 36 seconds. Warrior came of age when Tyson was the champ. So this worked. It wouldn’t have a long run, but it was a snapshot in time

It’s also extremely hard to hear the wrestlers say bad things about Sting. Like one of the most loved and respected and legendary wrestlers in wrestling and the other guys basically just trashed him when he was in the blade runners tag team. When you think about sting, you don’t think about anything negative and it’s hard to believe they trashed him THAT badly. That just shows how determined he was to be one of the best of all time. Now when you think about sting, you think about nothing but greatness and iconic moments in wrestling history like his one hour broadway match with Flair at the first clash of champions or his bungee line to the ring in the United Center to fight off Hogan and the nWo. Sting is a legend who is still putting in work to this very day.

Sting is and was one of the best in ring workers ever, not only that I don’t think anyone apart form maybe Taker comes close to his character development and patience when it comes to storytelling, doesn’t say a word for a year on tv and is still the most captivating wrestler in the world at the time then when he does speak it’s perfect .. “you have no guts…. And you.. you’re a dead man.” God Sting was incredible
Sting and Warrior are interesting as illustrations of two approaches to the business. They started together under Bill Watts, but when Watts tried to put them in line, Sting complied and Warrior said "fuck you" and hit the road to Dallas. Their careers continued on that same vector: Sting was humble and played by the rules, only rising in the industry slowly, never really becoming the top guy no matter how over he was. Warrior, though, was arguably more realistic: he knew that he had huge value, and probably also foresaw that he had a small window, so he always demanded the push and did things pretty much his own way. Had Warrior been wrong about his value, he wouldn't have gotten those concessions -- to the point that he almost never lost a match in WWF unless it was cage match (putting an asterisk by that loss). So, Warrior is headlining Wrestlemania against Hogan in WWF while Sting was still just an upper mid-carder at the smaller WCW.
Warrior's career didn't last very long that way, but the main reason he was "hated" was not all the supposed character flaws, but simply because he did not believe in "paying dues" and other workers resented that he got the biggest push in the world.
I stopped watching wrestling about 3 years ago but still love old school videos like this.

I was a (huge) Warrior fan as a kid and teen.
But i think it's quite obvious that The Warrior had a couple of screws loose upstairs.
I remember an interview with multiple older wrestlers. Like Undertaker and so on. Talking about Warrior and Sting. While both very green. Sting worked his ass of, though, to become a great technical wrestler. Warrior was always arrogant. Always stiff.
Undertaker said he was gassed when the match started. He mentioned that he had no condition after his energetic entrance.

Ultimate warrior is one of the best ever. Sure he wasnt great in the ring but was hogan? It was all about characters in those days and Warrior stood out in a giant roster of guys who were all tops in the different territories they came from. When i think of wrestling back then, the top 3 are hogan, savage and warrior. Wrestling hasnt been the same since

I would like to hear what makes you believe that, I have not heard that. From what I heard Kevin Sullivan gave Chris his push in WCW after Chris hooked up with his wife. From my understanding Chris had suffered so many concussions that his brain was like an 80 year old with dementia. He wouldn't have been in his right mind and would have thought what he was doing was right. But you have to be open to all information that is available.

Wtf I don't think he's the most hated I'm 50 years old and I can think of so many others Jim Hellwig was very generous especially when he quit in 92 him the warlord and about 20 mid and undercards were in Germany and the promotion didn't pay the mid and undercards when Hellwigg found out that him and the warlord held up the promotion for 300.000$ the promotion said there was no way they could come up with that amount of money that fast so him and the other guys left 3 hours later the promoter along with a few armed guards and a suitcase with 300.000$ Hellwigg and the warlord paid the guys and everyone got a huge bonus Hogan would have kept the money for himself

I was at a match around 1990 or 1991 in Tulsa, Ok. I was 7 or 8. I was in awe as I saw UW vs Andre the Giant. However, warrior did his ring run, jumped in, did his body tackle on the giant, and pinned him all in about ten seconds. I was so disappointed.
No man on earth was going to press slam the Giant...
I call BS on the wife saying the daughters were asking about why hogan didn't call or send a card after he died. They just lost their dad. Why would they be keeping track of who called and who sent cards etc.? Plus they didn't know hogan or have any relationship with him. They possibly said hi to him at the HOF, but that's it. Why would they care if he called or sent something?

Hellwig's final in-ring speech wasn't his most understandable (there are plenty of them posted here on RUclips). That "bag of sh!t" comment about Bobby Heenan is interesting considering that he (according to Honky Tonk Man) made jokea about Harley Race wearing a colostomy bag (following an injury during a match with "Ho Kogan") when Bobby himself ended up having to wear one later in life.
Heenan never had to wear a colostomy bag. Especially not at the time Hellwig wrote his disgusting diatribe.
I loved him as a kid in the 80s ! But I still always preferred NWA and Memphis wrestling . Also WCCW and the like . I loved WWF too , but even when I was 9 or 10 I considered it a cartoon version of wrestling , but I still loved it anyways ! I just looked at WWF as a different thing . Well .... Hogan in 85 got me into wrestling but within a year I saw CWA (Memphis) and NWA with my grandparents every weekend and they told me the difference ! For years I believed wrestling was real except for WWF LOL !!!!
This guy occupied a rare space where he was not a heel but not exactly a babyface. He was a necessary component to the early 90s where it was a tough gig to be a leading light albeit an also ran in the shadow of Hulkamania. For those of us that found Hogan a little too commercial in our infancy(!) Warrior/Savage/Flair were huge stars. It’s a strange business because what goes on behind the scenes as interesting at what goes on in front of cameras. You don’t see other ex pros from other sports retain the same sort of bitterness and politics towards their fellow pros. I guess what makes it different is that it’s more of a cast set up than a sport. It’s clear though that for all of them the peak of their careers in the industry were the best years of their lives, so much so that the injustices/personal gripes remain contentious for so many decades later. The breed of wrestling fan must be distinct from the sports fan, it’s probably the sort of adoration that regular athletes just don’t receive, they can be admired for their skill but not heroised in the same way wrestlers are, but this only applies if you are a babyface, makes no sense if you are a heel. The only explanation that I can think of is that this is the only sport in the world where steroids, drugs & booze were part of the bonding process. The behaviouial impact on the lockeroom mustve been unique!
The Ultimate Warrior will always be my number one favorite wrestler! He was unbelievably charismatic and thoroughly capable of driving the fans wild!

I find it unfair when people compare Goldberg to Warrior. Goldberg was catapulted from training to instant domination. Yes, he needed shorter match lengths, but his move set looked incredible. That mthrfckr did a backflip to dodge a spinning leg kick.

I was a fan of the Warrior. His over the top energy and power ment he was a dominant force. Yes, there were rumors about his real personality, but at that time, few and seemed like little more than jealousy by lesser wrestlers. Now, the truth has begun to be apparent. His ego was his biggest challenger. One he lost to until his passing.

The Beefcake thing isn’t true according to the words that came from Honky Tonk himself who said Beefcake was never scheduled to get the belt off him and that the Warrior winning was in the plans way in advanced.
You are referring to the thing about Warrior throwing a tantrum to get his way with the Intercontinental title? I could see that being just a false rumor. For some odd reason, Vince McMahon was never willing to let Ed Leslie hold any titles! He choreographed three alleged opportunities for him to win the Intercontinental belt, but with failure. The first time was when he booked the match with him against The Honky Tonk Man at Wrestlemania IV, but he choreographed the match for Beefcake to win by disqualification so he wouldn't get the title. The second time was the Summerslam 88 event, where Beefcake allegedly was to wrestle The Honky Tonk Man in a rematch for the Intercontinental belt, but all of a sudden Vince chose to choreograph a match from Prime Time Wrestling the previous weekend for Beefcake to get attacked by Outlaw Ron Bass who bloodied him with a spur, so by kayfabe, he would not be given an opportunity for the belt. The third time was when Beefcake allegedly was supposed to challenge Curt Hennig for the Intercontinental belt at Summerslam 90, but once again, Vince made up an excuse for Brutus Beefcake being thrown to the side due to an alleged injury from a parasailing accident. I found out later, that was all completely untrue. Beefcake never got injured by a para-sailer! Vince bribed Ed Leslie to go overseas to Japan to wrestle for about two and a half years, where he paid him a nice amount of money in advance. Then he brought him back into the World Wrestling Federation in early 1993 with a ridiculous story about Ed getting hit in the face by the knees of some girl who was para-sailing. It was all just a fictional story! I don't understand why Vince was never willing to allow Brutus Beefcake to hold the Intercontinental belt at least one time!

What Brutus said about warrior threatening to leave if honky didn't drop the belt to him isn't true. It was always the plan for honky to lose to warrior. Honky and Bruce Pritchard both verified it. Brutus is just sticking up for his brother Hogan. Honest question. Does queering make the world work? I completely agree with his views on politics it's just the world we live in today is scared to death of the truth and tries to destroy anyone who dares speak it. As a kid in the 80's, I speak when I say The Ultimate Warrior was the most LOVED & an a Ultimate Legend. Please change title. Far from most hated. Warrior running to the ring SummerSlam 88' was pure magic for us 10 yr olds. It was like he was a comic book hero that came to life. Dude was a BEAST. Also, Warrior was relevant & in the WWF & WWE late 80's-early-mid 90's, NOT the 2010's. I call those women harrasments bullshit. Warrior was long gone by then

I can totally understand where those who had put the ground work in, learnt the skills, taken the hard knocks were coming from in respect to the ring skills of Warrior. Same goes for those 2nd and 3rd generation grapplers who bleed grappling. Most if not all these would wrap him up and if wanted cripple him for the rest of his days. Can you imagine Andre putting up with his shit ?
All that said though, when he hit the TV with the intensity, the music pounding and the run to the ring and manic tearing at each rope whilst bouncing around, as a kid it was awesome. Heck his entrances lasted longer than most his matches, but he was the one everybody mimicked and spoke about at school. As someone else said earlier, as a kid you don't appreciate the 'trade' or spot the pure skill of the true Pro's of the game. He also hit at a time when there was a hell of a lot of dead weight and older end that didn't appeal to an 80's kid, and the ones that could of been mighty were kept down by Hulk Hogan and his backstage shenanigans.
Kids wouldn't see someone come in with such memorable impact, awesomeness and buzz about them instantly until dawn of The Undertaker.
Getting back to The Ultimate Warrior, as time goes on a hell of a lot, if not all what he said about the WWF, the steroid use ( refusing to lie about his use and how it was the worst kept secret ) and the shade he threw at H.H in particular seems to be pretty much bang on target. Probably, the main reason he gets dumped on by the others now for telling those truths, along with him being smarter at branding , shifting merch and getting paid more of course.

WWE is a bunch of hypocrites that only have the anti bullying campaigns to gain good publicity, the higher ups at the WWE have abused women, bullied wrestlers even in some cases so severe that they’ve taken their own lives.. hurried peoples careers if they do one thing wrong in a match which could end their dream of becoming a pro wrestler, the WWE is a disgrace of a company that I’ll never support anymore, unlike most of these Warrior fans that grew up watching him and because of nostalgia can’t handle anyone criticising him, I’ve research and read some of the horrendous things that company have done to people over the decades and it’s just a disgrace of a company that I used to adore growing up.

To defend Hellwig (from whaat I read and heard), Vince agreed to the 500k and 5% gate with Hellwig. Vince reneged the night before Summerslam. Jim had every right to hold Vince to their contract even if he had to threaten him. Either way Vince wins by claiming that Hellwig held the show for ransom and breached him for not being professional suspended him without further pay. Vince always wins.

Ultimate Warrior is one of the most distinguishable wrestlers of the late 80s into the 90s. Despite a lackluster moveset and the personality only a fellow narcissist could admire, the man helped to propel the industry. Bill Goldberg was essentially booked the same way, but inproved gradually. Entertainment is the name of the game, and the Warrior delivered even though he wasn't a locker-room favorite.
People forget that WWE is entertainment and sports television- he was perfect to capture attention and charismatic enough to capitalize on that attention. Technical wrestlers cant compete due to the nature of the business
I have a strong hunch as to how Helwig came up with the name The Ultimate Warrior. It's established that he was a comic book fan...and he was of course (pre-Dingo Warrior) in a tag team with Sting called the Blade Runners, clearly inspired by the 1982 film. In the Marvel Comics adaptation of Blade Runner, Roy Batty is introduced to the reader, in big bold letters, as *"THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR!"* A coincidence? Very possibly. But I think it not terribly unlikely that Helwig read that comic at some point, and the moniker stuck in his mind. Dingo Warrior, by his own telling, was someone else tagging something silly onto 'Warrior' without much thought. When he had a chance to rebrand at WWF, he may have recalled that phrase from the Blade Runner comic.

Ultimate Warrior is not the most hated person in pro wrestling history. That's a wild exaggeration. Wrestlers like: Scott Steiner, JBL, Buff Bagwell, Honky Tonk Man, Tully Blanchard, Bob Holly, Randy Orton, and Terry Taylor are all arguably as hated or more hated than Ultimate Warrior ever was. It's just that Warrior pissed off more people as a World champion than any of these other guys on the list did, and Warrior's push inflated his ego. Warrior definitely had problems socializing with most of the other guys in the locker room, but a number of wrestlers say they enjoyed working with Warrior. They include: Randy Savage, Sherri Martel, Kerry Von Erich, Al Perez, Warlord, Orlando Jordan, Kamala, Marty Jannetty, Brooklyn Brawler, and Papa Shango. For that many people to say that Warrior was a decent guy to work with, bumps him down on the list of the most despised wrestlers in history. Warrior might be among the Top 10 most disliked wrestlers of his era, but he's far from being the most detested wrestler in history. There are just too many other guys ahead of him in that category, including ones that are not mentioned here.

I think he dealt with a lot of issues over the years. But in his later years and after hearing from other legends who were at his hall of fame induction, I think he genuinely got better and changed. Maybe it was becoming a father that did it.
