Thanks, Frank. Needed this reminder of how to cast on for the underarm stitches.

Thank you Phrancko (Frank!) and Suzanne Bryan who pointed to your video, you saved my nerves LOL! I was struggling conceptually with the underarm, provisional cast-on technique for a sweater I am currently knitting. Whew, I can progress now. Thank you both again and again!

Excellent demonstration! Have only used crochet chain, pu stitches in the back of the chain so enjoyed learning another method and showing how it can be applied to underarm of a sweater, priceless!

Brilliant! I am using the provisional cast-on for the first time and the thought came up that it might be helpful for underarm stitches and guess what! Thanks to Susan Brian I found your demonstration. So thank you very much. I am certainly going to use this on my next project.

Please do! It makes me happy to pass ideas along that others find helpful. As a teacher, I'm sure you feel the same.

    Brillant.
I take it you have to CO 1 provisional stitch extra if you want 5 sts under arm as in your example. Because there is one st extra anyway which will be knit tog with the first/last st of the sleeve but on the other side there is no extra st but knit tog with a sleeve st anyway

Yes, it's either plus 1 or minus 1, depending on whether you pick up the two half stitches at each end. In the Phrancko patterns, I suggest picking up the extra stitches so you actually get one more than you have casted on. That helps close up the pesky hole that tends to appear there.

Thank you so much for making a video with this cast on technique. I knew something like this was possible but just couldn't figure it out and I haven't found any videos on it until I just found yours.

I love this way of casting on underarm stitches. Is there a way you can increase your volume on this video? It is hard to hear you even when I have it turned all the way up on my iPad.

I agree the volume is a bit soft. I'm sorry but I don't have a way to fix that.

Came here from Suzanne Bryan's video. I would have liked to see how to start the sleeve from this point and then how to join front and back. A little confused what point you're at in the garment construction, not being familiar with the pattern or sweater knitting.

This technique is useful only for a top-down design, whether it is a Phrancko Seamless Set-in Sleeve sweater, or a raglan, or a top-down yoked design. You have already worked from the neckline down to the point where the sleeve is separated from the body. The sleeve stitches are placed on a waste yarn and crocheted cast-on stitches are then used to connect the front to the back, completing the armhole. The rest of the body is then worked. To knit the sleeve, the stitches on the waste yarn are put back on the needles and then the provisional cast-on stitches are also placed on the needles. The sleeve is then knitted in the round with no seam produced at the underarm.

How important is it for the black yarn to be the same exact weight as the white?

    • @redwingranch9510

I don't have it match exactly and it works fine. I do choose a smooth yarn in a contrasting color to make it easy to see and pull out.
