There are around 10,000 flights in the world any given day. You should install flight radar and that’ll give you an idea of how many planes this looks like in the sky. It made me much happier to fly.
Just let me tell you that security in aircrafts it is very very high, you dont even imagine how many variables have to be checked and ok before an airplane takes off for making sure everything is going to be okay :)
I notice almost almost 300 "dislikes" for this video. Why would so many give a dislike for a simple, well-made, informative video? What tools modern culture has produced. Bravo Captain Joe!
I often fly from Dallas-Ft. Worth to Sydney and this is what I think I remember one of the Qantas flight attendants telling me of their schedule during the 16-17 hour flight: There are usually twice the number of staff on board then there would be on a much shorter flight. All flight attendants are on deck during the first two hours (takeoff phase) and the last two hours (landing phase) of flight. It is interesting to see so many of the flight crew during those times! In between those two phases the first shift will be on deck for the first 6-6.5 hours while the second shift is resting/sleeping, then they switch shifts at the halfway point of the trip.
Absolute cobblers !! no long haul airline in the world doubles up the crew config, just so half can sleep, think of all that weight of 16 extra Cabin crew, bags, suitcsase, food, etc etc, i should no, i did this job for 30+ years long haul, and 5 short haul, rest is divided by 3 or more, to give an extended Flight duty period
I love this Lecture. Our longest flight was from LA to Fiji in 2003 & this extraordinary explanation is simply remarkable. I love flying & turbulence notwithstanding.
That was my last flight too. I never paid attention to the attendants 🤔 I usually sleep for 5 mins and spend 9 hours 55 mins figuring out a comfortable position
I used to clean these, I'd literally run to them on the JAL, Ana & Nippon planes because of how clean they were. Actually the Japanese planes were always so nice to clean. The beds I cleaned were much smaller than these. I recall the room being right at the back, near where we'd have that rising truck with food. With a very narrow steep stairway, the room was more square than what was shown at the end. There was a very low ceiling, maybe 4 maybe 5ft high and 8 beds in a similar arrangement but with much less headroom as they were double /bunk beds. To clean you head to be on all fours.
The crew on the A340's I flew on from S.F.O. to München back in the late 90's and in 2012 went down the stairs by the five lavatories and through a door with some sort of keypad. It looked like the crew rest was under the coach section. Always great flights; free booze, three meals, two movies, and all the snacks you could eat. Lufthansa rocks. Good times. MK
@@ikichullo wow you're so cool, insulting people on the internet. Not my fault that my family can't pay for plane tickets for 4 persons, we have other things to pay, and we still go on vacations, we just stay in our province.
On some 767s and all narrowbody planes, longer flights generally will require several revenue seats be used as crew rest. In the case of United's Island Hopper route from Hawaii to Guam, the point A to B duration is 16 hours. Seats 1A & 1B in business/first class are reserved for a second set of pilots and seats 2A & 2B are blocked off to allow the pilots to have a lie-flat recline. Due to the remote locations served, the Island Hopper also has a Boeing 737 mechanic onboard seated in a extra legroom economy seat. As for the smaller wide body planes, several economy class seats are allocated as a FA crew rest & include a privacy curtain, and extra legroom / recline.
:D Just the same like in truck and vessel transport business, whatever it is.. If it makes money by moving ,sleeping long becomes a luxury. But pilots are better off in general due to the huge responsibility
jackpot long haul pilots are usually awake and ready to fly for a while as they report to the airport for flights like this since they are aware of their responsibilities. Reason why Joe expected a 3 hour nap was that just before a minor disgrace by the senior KLM lead pilot at a place called Tenerife pilots were told to limit not only flight time to 10 hours but also time chilling waiting for airports to open and that was seen as a major factor involved when a landing gear was a bit low on takeoff and decapitated another 747 in cloudy weather. Also Joe once said they do get a 3 day holiday to run around LAX but he says the human body would need 8 to safely take off for their return flight.
@@kristingallo2158 the long haul crews know what they are getting into. the point is not to hold the pilots into more than a 10 hour shift per 24 hours clock and under standards be considered tired before they hit the critical landing phase.
I work for a company that builds crew rests both aft and forward. They are interesting the difference between overhead and lower deck. I wire them up and you can tell how much an airline cares about the staff by the amenities installed.
All jokes aside I don't fucking get the joy of doing that like in 2016 I went to use the toilet on a flight now it had been a good 5 years since I had actually needed to do so on a flight so I had grown a bit but I open the door start to go inside and I'm like wtf are they taking the fucking piss here there's barely enough room for 1 person here never mind 2 Holy shit
I was on a 787-9 from AKL to BKK with Thai Airways and I was sitting in seat 11B (1-2-1 arrangement sitting aisle seat) when the captain came out at the end of his shift and became my seat mate. I was 14 at the time but still had an interesting conversation.

"Don't compare them to a 5 star hotel." I'm a submarine veteran...your rest area may not be a 5 star hotel, but I can tell you, it's not lacking in volume, either. To me, that's a 5 star hotel right there. Almost a cruise ship! Lol! And you have women! We have women on subs now but I'm from the days of yore.
Being 10,000 below sea in tight compartments....hmm, not much excitement there. I always have this fear of the sub flooding. Maybe from watching too much "Hunt for Red October".
Why don't long haul airlines offer bunks to passengers instead of seats? Not the reclining first class kind, I mean stacked bunks that have the same kind of density as seats in coach. I would much rather lie down for my flight than sit, assuming I have a tablet with stuff to watch/read when not sleeping.
@@sierraromeomike Yea that's what I was thinking. They want us all to be awake and alert during takeoff and landing, with eyes adjusted to outside lighting conditions. But I'm sure the airline that Joe and I are starting can engineer a solution to that ;) Maybe adjust interior lighting to match the outside and have live camera feeds play on all the monitors + a good PA system? The authorities can be convinced. Same thing with space and weight. It should be possible to engineer a comfortable bunk with a footprint similar to a seat in coach. Just look at all the extra space above your head that's unused.
Sergiu Calancea I still think we can overcome that. With proper communication (monitors, PA) and perhaps having the bunk covers be open for takeoff/landing, I think we can get the plane empty in 90 secs or less. Maybe even have inflatable cushions on the floor so people can jump straight out of their bunk. I totally agree that it's an engineering and logistics challenge, but not impossible!

Does worrying about it make it better? Or less likely to happen?
No. It only makes things worse.
All I can think about is how can I talk a flight attendant into going into the secret hideaway to "hang out"

Its enough space for the good pilot and pretty flight attendant to do quickie
Wow that’s actually so interesting! I had no idea these existed!

Imagine getting sleep paralysis while on controlled rest.
You wouldn't be asleep long enough
it’s only a nap it’s not a full on deep sleep
Have you guys ever experienced sleep paralysis? It can occur even in a short amount of time of sleep
Dre koolaid it’s not long enough for deep sleep. Your brain wakes up from a deep sleep before the rest of your body.
@@trapkingproductions actually it can skip and go straight to REM sleep which is the cause for sleep paralysis no matter the time
I used to clean these, I'd literally run to them on the JAL, Ana & Nippon planes because of how clean they were.
Good times.

"Where's the pretty flight attendant that served me earlier?" Ouch to the new one 🤣
Ive knew that crew compartment because my mom's friend works as a flight attendant and she tour us in a plane
Oh man why do I feel tired after watching this
On some 767s and all narrowbody planes, longer flights generally will require several revenue seats be used as crew rest.
What???? A pilot knocked out tired, getting 3 hours of sleep and being exhausted? Nooooooo that never happens, pilots never fly exhausted xD
I mean it’s 3 and a half hours in 12 hours that’s not that bad tbh
Well that's terrifying.
I’m just curious but would you mind sharing which airlines has the best amenities for their staff?
That's where the Mile High Club meets while they are flying
All jokes aside I don't fucking get the joy of doing that like in 2016 I went to use the toilet on a flight now it had been a good 5 years since I had actually needed to do so on a flight so I had grown a bit but I open the door start to go inside and I'm like wtf are they taking the fucking piss here there's barely enough room for 1 person here never mind 2 Holy shit

Very cute pilot.

This is better than most of those stealth living videos that’s popped up on my RUclips recommendations list lately
I'm a merchant sailor and it always shocks me how close a pilot's cockpit is to a ships bridge, even down to the ranks and handovers.
@Daniel Leonard
All about tradition, after all they are both forms of "ships". Essentially the sky is an ocean of air, it's even blue too!
Now, that one had stairs, but I was once taken down in an elevator. It was the same size as that first room he refered to and looked just as plain.

I was on a 787-9 from AKL to BKK with Thai Airways and I was sitting in seat 11B (1-2-1 arrangement sitting aisle seat) when the captain came out at the end of his shift and became my seat mate. I was 14 at the time but still had an interesting conversation.

"Don't compare them to a 5 star hotel."
I'm a submarine veteran...your rest area may not be a 5 star hotel, but I can tell you, it's not lacking in volume, either.
@@shihlin1 fun thing i have phobia but still would want to sleep in a sub marine rather than an airplane, because i have trust issues lol
Lets start an airline together!
Safety is a definite issue besides space and weight considerations.
@@p11111 and you must also be able to evacuate the plane in 90 sec . Even with proper lighting would be problematic in that configuration
That’s the room the pilots be smashing some of the flight attendants!
Don't know how this ended up in my recommendations....but I found it very cool and interesting. Never thought about this before, but now I know. :)
