How I think the 4 time travelers reacted after being sent back to their original timeline: Sidon: Melancholy. Happy to get to see his sister one last time, but sad that he couldn’t save his Mipha. Riju and Yunobo: Star struck that they got to meet their heroes. Teba: Never meet your heroes.
Though even before the DLC, Teba did acknowledge that, arrogant that he was, Revali was nonetheless the ace he was cracked up to be (as shown by his line, "There he is, the champion of the Rito." in the second Medoh mission's cutscene). Teba got to see both the good and the bad.
Yeah, though it's not their fault that they were wrong; Nintendo's marketing really should've been a lot more honest about what Age of Calamity was going to be. I see a lot of comments from people saying, "Wasn't this game supposed to be a prequel? I feel lied to" and it makes me frustrated with Nintendo, because those commenters _were_ lied to.
If you think about it, it's kinda tragic. This Mipha gets to live and be with her brother as he grows up. Meanwhile, BotW Sidon gets to go back to his timeline where she's dead.
Aren't they all in spirit form semi-bo7nd to the beasts? Also their kin are the NEW champions allowing them to pilot them? They could all meet in their original timeline. So goron kid can meet his dad, fish boy meets sister, Gerudo girl meets mama, and Birdo man meets... other birdo man? Dunno if those two are related
I want to emphasize again that the full game released two days before this video was published. Within about 48 hours, he played through the entire story, wrote a script, recorded footage and voiceover, and edited this video. This is passion to the point it seems like madness.
He does appear in the secret credits with Kohga after you fix Terrako, so it's possible that he wasn't killed, but instead critically wounded... Until Kohga and the remaining Yiga joined Zelda, and likely asked Mipha to heal the beloved Second Banana.

@@krausercruz2780 Honestly, I'd rather not repeat what happened with Ocarina of Time. I think Breath of the Wild had the right idea with being deliberately vague about where in the timeline it is. Nintendo is not the best at maintaining a strong continuity, so I think the best option for them is to keep things fairly loose so they aren't restricted.

Well theoretically the events of BoTW2 would play out in the alt timeline in some form like the original calamity did in this one. So could see the shrines/monks play a role if they decide to expand on this alternate timeline. Maybe the seal thing breaks before Zelda/Link get there and the events there play out differently? Actually now that I think about it, BoTW2's events in this alternate timeline would take place after Link and Zelda get old and maybe died so their descendants would have to deal with it. This would certainly change things! Though it's unclear how the sealing of Calamity Ganon by Zelda in the original timeline might have impacted when that zombified Gannondorf would have broken free. It might have been something destined to happen at that point in time or was spurred on by Calamity Ganon's defeat. It might have also been solely triggered by Zelda and Link's presence in the chamber and might not have happened otherwise. Can't even work out the possible details till BoTW2 comes out and we find out what happens I guess. :P
Idk if u guys know this but u can cook a meal that is just made of flint and make link eat it in the main game. Idk if the recipe was flint but u can check by talking with an npc in a garbage dump thats also a location of a shrine.
I have a question. How old are these people in Zelda? The older Sidon came to the past from BOTW right? And botw is 100 years later. And impa is young 100 years before, but she is still alive, old, but alive in botw. So how old are these people?
@@treheard3032 Well, you can think of Hylians as humans, having similar lifespans, but when it comes to all the other races (Gerudo, Goron, Zora, and even Sheika), they can all live for way longer than them. I think the Sheika lived longer because of their dealings with magic, from what I remember was implied in previous games of the franchise. So it's actually normal for them all to still be alive. For example, Finley in Zora's Domain looks like a child, but she says she's 30, yet her mental and physical development to that point is that of a teenager's. They all just age differently. And, well, Gorons *are* rocks. 😅

This is one of the few Zelda games that made justice to Zelda herself. Seeing her going from insecure and powerless, to commanding the army of the united people of Hyrule, and fighting Ganon head-on is one of the most uplifting things I've seen in fictional media.
Zelda has never really been weak? Many in Ocarina or earlier games but for the most part she has to suppress or hold Gabon’s immense power otherwise he can destroy the world. And she has to do it waiting for Link to awaken his power. It’s just we play as link slowly progressing but Zelda is already holding back Ganon for the most part. That’s why it’s. Trio not a Duo with a random person saving her. It’s not like she’s not doing anything. Without her, Ganon would literally be able to do what he wants
I also like how when link finds tarraco the butterflies not only represent the butterfly effect, but those butterflies are actually goddess butterflies. Butterflies that were first named in Skyward Sword (I Think)
I’m not necessarily mad about the story in this game, it’s super cool, but I can’t be the only one who feels a little played. I mean the entire selling point was that it was a prequel to breath of the wild but it’s literally the opposite, a timeline where breath of the wild never happened. But I still really love this game and all ready played the crap out of it.
Ya I get that, but I actually don't think they ever marketed it as prequel. They only officially said it's "set 100 years prior to the events of BOTW", which is technically true. But yea misleading on purpose
I've been having the same conflict. My only complaint about the story is that BotW exists. I get the timeline splits, but I was really excited about the prequel idea. I kept thinking, even through chapter 7, that SOMEHOW things were going to tie into the destruction of the kingdom.
Maybe they were originally planning on it being a true prequel but then someone somewhere thought you know, maybe players would be unhappy with a game that they are destined to lose. Like who would want to play a game where you lose the battle? No matter how hard you try, you’re gonna fail. Gamers are built with a drive to win. It wouldn’t of been satisfying to play, despite being so in a storytelling sense. At the end of the day these games are created to make money so the creators can put food on the tables they need to go with the most marketable option. Anyway, a slight disappointment to the Zelda community but the most logical choice for the business boys. (I hope this makes sense, it’s 2am)
I'm actually glad it turned out to be a split-timeline deal. This way we get a great Warriors game with a cool, triumphant story and the original tragic timeline of BOTW isn't ruined.
Imagine in botw 2 Zelda and link go to zora’s domain and Sidon just teleported back from the alternate timeline and talks crazy about his sister and a giant Ganon but everybody shrugs it off as a bad dream but the player knows it’s not
I think it's likely we'll get some small references to this game in BotW 2. For example you might have some dialogue with Riju where she talks about how she had a dream where she fought alongside Lady Urbosa and the rest of the champions to help defeat the Calamity.
Can you imagine how heartbreaking it must be for Sidon to return to his own timeline, where his sister is still dead? Hope they at least reference it in the Sequel because there is some opportunity for great character development there
To be honest, they shouldn't have been returned, Terrako was kinda scrap metal, not like he can send them back. Unless... the other Terrako that must exist in a 3rd timeline, brought them back. Or maybe they just got Back to the Futured and don't exist anymore aside from Sidon because he was already born, you know take your pick.
Technically, this is inaccurate. If they were brought back from the original timeline, they'd then be sent to the future in the AOC timeline, since there isn't any canonical way to jump in between timelines in Zelda, just creating them. So theoretically, they would have to adapt to their new future where Hyrule is at peace, but most of the champions would probably still be alive. Dunno if that made sense or not.
Well, actually it might start a full fledged paradox since two Sidons would exist simultaneously, but at the same time no because adult Sidon belongs to another timeline and can't be influenced by the young AOC Sidon.
@@maybezero2783 lowkey i think they took a similar approach to Endgame, with the “champions” from the future being like the infinity stones, and Terrako sending them back was like Captain America going back in time to put them back in their respective timelines. is it a super clean explanation? not really. but i think it serves its purpose
I really liked how the story focused on Zelda and her actually taking command as a royal, it is something we never seen before and was really cool to see.

Can we just take a second to appreciate the amount of stuff in the game? They didn’t have to add kohga or rhoam or hestu into the roster of playable characters, or any of the time travelers. Hell, they made the great fairies and Maz Koshia into characters! There’s over 100 special challenges to do (I think, haven’t done them all yet), a solid story, and some incredible boss fights and fun gameplay. And they even added post game content for terrako. 9/10 game at LEAST
Beautiful storytelling, the line “His skills were inhuman, moving with incredible speed and swinging the master sword with perfect accuracy” was almost poetic in a way
I found it odd that he said Link was the one to do it, given the cutscenes look to be specifically designed not to reveal which party character came to the champion's aid.
@@Dr.Pootis It actually is just who ever the player is controlling. The other characters don't call you by name and after the cutscene you'll be controlling who ever you picked for the level. For most people it was probably Link though.
You didn't even mention how after Zelda saved Roam and they hugged it shows kohga and two yoga clan members crying in the background and he's my favorite character, I can never kill kohga in botw ever again.

Did Kohga even die in BoTW anyway? He went down in a comedic way and fell into a hole. Dude could just be sleeping unconscious for all we know or just teleported and forgot to tell the Yiga members. Edited: So Yiga members mention avenging him. I'm still on the skeptical side that he's alive, just injured in battle.

Dude my final battle against Ganon was crazy it came down to the last 1/4 of a heart on all characters, I couldn’t have asked for a more epic ending than that.
I just beat the game last night and DAMN! That game was so much more awesome than what I expected! The music, the settings, the scale, THE STORY! Great game!

In terms of cinematic parallels, I think my favourite part of aoc was the evolution of people deflecting stuff from Zelda. Each time she's helpless and lost as people throw themselves in front of her to keep her safe, the camera pan is almost the exact same each time, even as she pressures Ganon for the first time she's pushed back and terrako throws itself in the way to protect her once more. Then, the final sealing cutscene, when Ganon puts all his energy into one final attack. The camera zooms in, but her eyes don't widen, they narrow. The world doesn't slow. She doesn't flinch. And Ganon shatters like glass against her. Top Zelda moment of EVERY game.
Im actually really satisfied with this being a one off mini split in the timeline. Then you get some fun twists in the story and if you really dont like musou games and dont wanna play it, you wont be missing out on the main story of botw and the upcomming sequel. It lets them do whatever they want with this story while letting it also remain canon and i think thats really smart of them.
I can agree with that, but they should've marketed it more honestly; they made everyone think that this game was going to be a direct prequel to Breath of the Wild, so what's really disappointing isn't the game itself, but the false-advertising that surrounded it.
I agree, but I do wanna point out my confusion on a lil thing like the clear envy and resentment Zelda held for Link at first, and yet this shows that she didn't mind him much at all before he drew the master sword, and he was already her personal bodyguard, and when he drew the sword in this one she didn't much mind afterwards either, because Urbosa talked to her about it. But in the original, he's already got the sword and she already hates him before he becomes her personal knight....am I right or am I getting confused? 😩🤔
Just as long as BOTW 2 doesn’t reference Age of calamity at all. The story was fine, but it felt like fan fiction, with how they just used time travel to solve their problems.

Zelda wasn’t as jealous because there was to much to be focused on it was mostly battle in aoc so she didn’t really pay that much attention to link she was more focused on her research terrako and her father. But at the korrok forest mission and the mission before Gannon arrives link does bug her and gives the same feeling self that she had in botw.

While I would have liked a tragic literal Prequel, I actually really liked the Story AoC chose to tell. I liked that we now have a new timeline split, I liked how they the handled the characters and I didn't mind the ending. My heart was aching everytime Mipha and future Sidon interacted and I liked how they gave the Yiga Clan a redemption in this timeline. I just wish Nintendo hadn't advertised it as a direct Prequel to BotW, it was so misleading and is a big reason why several people are upset with this Game
This game should have pulled a Dynasty Warriors 8, where there's a depressing historical route, and a hypothetical route where everyone is happy and alive. It would have been great for this game.
I doubt there will be a DLC that adds the good ending (that we know from Botw). They would have to scrap the entire game to make it canon since the only canon part the first cutscene.

I believe that the intended interpretation of Aonuma's the response was: "Breath of the Wild is so far into the future that you can't say what's really happened and what's just a myth."
Botw > one timeline of events. AoC > second timeline of events. That's two out of 3 timelines. Like in SS and Oot we have been able travel between two eras--two of the timelines. The third doesn't seem so simple to get to - in fact "that timeline" is likely dark world, lorule, termina, twilight realm and they have always required different methods to get there - cracks in the wall and portals. In fact hyrule in twilight princess was starting to become like said places though - bottomless chasms and huge of swaths of land, simply not there. Din created the earth and with ganondorf gone, taking the triforce piece of power with him, hyrule is slowly falling apart like lorule and the twilight.
Brings me tears of joy that the future champions are able to save the past ones :”) at least in the different timeline the past champions don’t die a lonely battle
I don't even think I'm halfway through the story yet, because of all the time I've been putting into the side quests hoping to get something good. So far the best tangible reward for doing them all seems to be a green tunic like the one from the original Hyrule Warriors. Well that and the fact that all the characters are unstoppable murder trains now because of all the combos I've unlocked.
@@Drunkoncouch If you beat the Story you can unlock a Side Quest wher you have to beat Astor, Harbinger Ganon, and than Calamaty Ganon. If you do that you Unlock Calamaty Ganon. You need to be around LV 75 to do it. So its just a fun reward for completionists.
It still happened. It still had to have happened for the events of this game to have happened, and it still happened within the continuity of the original game and probably its sequel. It just didn't happen within the continuity in which most of this game is set, due to outside influence from that original continuity.
y'all gotta stop using the argument that "but we know what happened❤" or things like this. what we actually mean by "no apparently it never happened" is that nintendo sold this game as "look, this is the real timeline before the botw events, you'll see what Happened" when it's not that at all. you can't say "this is what happened" and then be like "look its not canon and full of time travel" it makes no sense... @chaka chaka i get u 😐✌

@@lucanuspeeler1469 A.I. and/or power storage screw, explains how they remembered everything when they got rebuilt in the secret ending, and why it was the only thing keeping the future champions in that timeline after it's body was destroyed. It could also explain how Terrako didn't turn on for Zelda as a child, until the screw was put in.
It's offensive that the post game load screen says : Terriko created a split world (timeline). Nintendo you didn't have to do this but you torture us anyway.
The execution of the story was brilliant. It stands firm on its own, but introduced a lot of new enemies that will be implemented in BOTW2. This is what happens when you work as closely together as the two companies did here. A very fun game to play indeed!
If only all that collaboration had gone toward an actual prequel with an interesting narrative, rather than a falsely-advertised game with a cliché plot. Also, "It stands firm on its own" I don't see how this game's story can possibly stand up for anyone who has no knowledge of the backstory in BOTW.
Someone in one of Croton's streams said that malice is like a liquid, it takes the shape of it's container. It makes sense that if ganon absorbed a human e.g Astor, he would look humanoid. In the same way, absorbing the spider-like guardians make it look like a spider.

Thoroughly enjoyed this game, but I really hope they add an original timeline route as an update or DLC. I was ready to have my heart ripped to pieces and was left a little disappointed.
Yeah so when you decide to play it again 15 years from now your stuck with the bad story... I don’t like DLC for that very reason.... And I am one to come back and play games again years later...
This game is incredibly emotional. I cried twice throughout the game when I played it. To put that into perspective, I have been told multiple times that I rarely show any negative emotions, not to mention cry. This was a sad, but amazing game
I mean Terrako died twice of actual death in a game that pulled all tricks to keep everyone alive while building him as the loz r2d2. so of course anyone would cry twice... or once assuming they haven't finished by the second death.
Did anybody else really not like how King Rhoam treated Zelda? I feel like a big reason for the fact that Zelda can't unlock her power is that her father treats her like a subject instead of her daughter. Edit: I also really like how they refer to the Blight Ganons as "shards of calamity ganon." It makes it seem like its Ganon attacking the champions, and not his copy-paste goons.
Insecurity played a big part in why she could not awaken her power. It’s biggest trigger was her love for Link. Notice how in both timelines her powers only awakened when she rushes in to save Link.
You're not wrong. Rhoam keeping tight reigns on her prevented her from unlocking it. Only once she was free of those reigns was she able to unlock her power.
It wasn't Rhoam that was holding her back. And, as stated in his diary in Breath of the Wild, he was only like that because he didn't want anything to happen to her while fighting Ganon if she didn't unlock her powers
@@wtf_is_this_handle_shit It wasn't entirely Rhoam's fault, but he definitely played a part. He just didn't realize what he was doing was inadvertently hindering her.
I mean, there's Rhoam diary in BOTW where he admit he f*cked up treating Zelda like this, but it was too late to apologise. Terrako presence in this timeline made Zelda gave him the shield (found with her mother when young) so she could keep Terrako, to Rhoam reluctance thus effectively saving him... at least that's what I think
Lol, I remember thinking it's okay to fail because everyone dies in the timeline anyway. Was very surprised when the future people came. I asked myself "Wait, were they alive during these events?" Then I learned Terriko teleported them in from the future.
I wish Nintendo made this game a prequel as they stated in stead of a timeline split. They had a good story to tell with character development that could have made the champions more three dimensional. Instead we see and egg travel through time to screw things up.
I'm getting emotional too; I want to grab an ancient bladesaw and tell Terrako, "This is for taking my tragic prequel from me! (Starts cutting) You tin Humpty Dumpty!" I'd feel guilty afterwards though; it's not the egg's fault that Nintendo and Koei Tecmo falsely-advertised this game.

So BASICALLY: The Age of Calamity is where the timeline finally united, only for it to be split into two because of Terrako. Now we have one timeline where Link is in a 100 year sleep and one where the heroes managed to actually defeat Calamity
To be honest, instead of seeing alternate versions of the battles, i would have far more liked to see and play the original ones. Yes, it would have been a dark and depressing game, but really playing out the events before breath of the wild would have been amazing. Despereate battels for retreat, hopes being shattered over and over all for the one goal to buy one century of time for link and zelda to return and defeat ganon. Up until the last mission I was desperately hoping for a twist. I wanted a breath of the wild prequel, no fanfiction. But, after all, it was an enjoyable game (besides this absolute monster of a side mission, where you have to fight 3 lynels inside one of the shrine-arenas. I died so many times.)
Agreed. I wanted to see a world not yet destroyed. I wanted to see things that Zelda didn't see and thus weren't in her memories. This makes me feel like botw was for nothing.
It would have been cool to see just how the fall of Hyrule played out. We see bits and pieces of it in BotW, but I would have loved a chance to see the details of it. What did people do to try and hold back the Calamity, and how did they fail? At what point did Link and Zelda know that the champions were lost? What did the champions think in their final moments? Why had Link and Zelda been fleeing towards Hateno? Were they planning to meet up at the tech lab and try to regroup, or were they just going to head further south and try to get a boat to flee Hyrule entirely? Did they even have a plan or were they just running, too busy with surviving the immediate threat to think about what was going to happen next? All really interesting questions that Age of Calamity just doesn't answer.
One thing I really enjoyed was seeing the champions interact with each other more, like how Daruk and Mipha planning to train together. Just seeing the other champions more in general was nice. I also really liked seeing the characters that weren’t fully voiced get to do so, such as maz koshia and the great fairies
I just realised that age of calamity still has some form of cannon malice seen in the botw2 trailer. This means that there is a real chance age of calamity could get a sequel.
If they save this new timeline purely for a series of canon Hyrule Warriors games, it would save on confusion. Have Hyrule Warriors follow the new timeline, whilst the main series follows the BOTW timeline. I think this would be nice.
@@andpeggy6048 Highly doubtful. They know AoC is a niche game. Besides, when people play botw2, they will expect a sequel of botw1, not a sequel of AoC. That would quickly become confusing to a LOT of people, and not a good sort of confusing. Besides, AoC even goes so far to include a loading screen message to confirm that the game's events take place in their own "world". To stay safe, I would think it is best to assume that botw2 will follow on directly from the original story of botw.
Great video, Ed! Very informative and clear explanation of the story. (despite how crazy time travel is!) Hopefully we get more story content in DLC. There's just more we want to see in this new world.
Honestly this game was so full of twists! Who knows if will actually ever see this timeline again... itd be crazy if they did another split scenario like Oot. One where the calamity is slain. The other where the calamity wins.

The only DLC I want to see is an Original Timeline campaign where we see how the unaltered events played out. Nintendo said that this game would be a prequel; they should give us a prequel.
@@itsblurry9768 so basically terraco goes back in time bringing with him some of ganon. Which ends up taking over the "pasts" terraco. Since he goes back in time he creates a time paradox. He prevents the fall of the champions by bringing the 4 heroes who help link in BOTW battle the divine beasts. After the calamity falls they are returned to their times thus creating two separate timelines. also note that the 4 heros have already helped link battle in BOTW so im guessing they were either taken after the events of BOTW or during the 2nd game. Time travel is a confusing thing.
I loved seeing all the successors to the Champions come in, but the best two were Sidon and Riju. Sidon getting to be with his sister again makes me tear up every time, and Urbosa and Riju's mom/daughter relationship was excellent.
I love Zelda in this game. BotW's Zelda always felt off. AoC Zelda feels like she grows and actually comes into her role, and I love her in this game and her relationship with Link. She's also a delight to fight as.
Dead comment but being 116 years old and spending over 90% of your life span sharing a sac with hatred and malice incarnate would make anyone at least a bit "off." Honestly, just be happy she didn't lose the plot in there.
I mean, the whole world turned to ruin on her 17th birthday and she spent her entire life feeling like a failure that she couldn’t awaken her powers and save Hyrule. I think it makes sense for her to feel “off”

@@matthewmuir8884In relations to what you said 1. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was developped by Monolith Software, not Nintendo, 2. Having the cartoonish island turn out to be a dream is a lot softer than explicitly killing the main characters in a more realistic game. On the more speculatory side, Nintendo might feel that they went through the BotW backstory already with the memories and the DLC. Not saying that was the right decision, but it makes sense.
@@foxtrap86flame I have spent like 5 Minutes thinking about this so forgive me if this sounds ridiculous and it will actually be the most awful thing ever. So. Link gets defeated before Zelda's power awakens and only once he's dead for good, Zelda's able to get her power, but showing only the Triforce of wisdom that usually belongs to her. Then, something really visually cool is put on the screen and it sort of turns out that Link's strength/spirit/Triforce of courage has somehow gotten into Zelda. In this new game (The Actual Legend of Zelda), Zelda's the main protagonist, she's actually a warrior with the blood of the Goddess AND the courage of the Hero, that has to fight enemies and defeat Ganon only this time, instead of sealing him away, she definitely kills him once and for all, obtaining also the Triforce of Power and then using it to wish for Link to resurrect because everyone loves romance.
No you know what? I'm not going to apologise for my alternative reality, as I was really disappointed with this one. I mean, I don't usually am a big fan of time traveling but at least in Ocarina of Time I find it to be justified by something different than the classic "let's go back in time to avoid a catastrophe". However, I could sort of accept it. But bringing actual people from the future is just too much for me. This wasn't what I was expecting so..
Does anyone else feel like this game is the most deserving of the title The Legend of Zelda? Zelda was much more up front and involved in this story than any of the other games in the series I’ve played.
This game is deserving of the title, "Retracted and replaced with an actual prequel to BOTW". Of course, it's probably not going to ever get that title.

(the same as OG Just they are prepared a bit early and the king isnt blocking Zelda's tech shenanigans ) Still you can still have your egg guardian and all (Just dont give him the power to time travel and gg)

I wouldn't want it to actually tie into BotW because spinoffs made by different companies will inevitably have a lower quality story than an actual main series game made by the actual developers, just due to the new people making it and their priorities. The Dynasty Warriors games are not known for their plots, they're known for their fanservice, which this game delivers on. Even if they actually tried to make a story that was canon to Breath of the Wild, it would most likely be a mockery of the game without much effort put into it. The only people who could do justice to Breath of the Wild's plot is Breath of the Wild's developers, and Tecmo Koei doesn't really have any place actually trying to write Zelda lore.
@@Jordan3DS i know and i agree this is better to be not canon, but it was SOOO easy to Follow the yellow path first (to treat the fans/respect the time line) and them do a fan service route where everything its Just funky and fun and they can do what ever they please. I understand that MONEY, time and People are a big cost but a company as Nintendo i think should be able to pay those guys to make 2 routes (one canon and one no canon) and treat the fans in both ways without getting dissapointment from ANY side. Now this game would be tained in Zelda fandom and BOTW 2 has a higher base bar to surpass
The feeling I get with this game when all of Hyrule, the champions, their successors from the future, and even the Yiga Clan coming together with everyone making it out okay, gives me the warmest feeling. Even if it’s an almost non canon story, I love that it’s here to tell a happier tale for all these wonderful characters.

@@krausercruz2780 Honestly, I'd rather not repeat what happened with Ocarina of Time. I think Breath of the Wild had the right idea with being deliberately vague about where in the timeline it is. Nintendo is not the best at maintaining a strong continuity, so I think the best option for them is to keep things fairly loose so they aren't restricted.

Well theoretically the events of BoTW2 would play out in the alt timeline in some form like the original calamity did in this one. So could see the shrines/monks play a role if they decide to expand on this alternate timeline. Maybe the seal thing breaks before Zelda/Link get there and the events there play out differently?
Actually now that I think about it, BoTW2's events in this alternate timeline would take place after Link and Zelda get old and maybe died so their descendants would have to deal with it. This would certainly change things! Though it's unclear how the sealing of Calamity Ganon by Zelda in the original timeline might have impacted when that zombified Gannondorf would have broken free. It might have been something destined to happen at that point in time or was spurred on by Calamity Ganon's defeat. It might have also been solely triggered by Zelda and Link's presence in the chamber and might not have happened otherwise. Can't even work out the possible details till BoTW2 comes out and we find out what happens I guess. :P

I have a question. How old are these people in Zelda? The older Sidon came to the past from BOTW right? And botw is 100 years later. And impa is young 100 years before, but she is still alive, old, but alive in botw. So how old are these people?
@@treheard3032 Well, you can think of Hylians as humans, having similar lifespans, but when it comes to all the other races (Gerudo, Goron, Zora, and even Sheika), they can all live for way longer than them. I think the Sheika lived longer because of their dealings with magic, from what I remember was implied in previous games of the franchise.
So it's actually normal for them all to still be alive.
For example, Finley in Zora's Domain looks like a child, but she says she's 30, yet her mental and physical development to that point is that of a teenager's.
They all just age differently.

They sure are! Not only can we not tell their age, but the Gerudo don't even bother to check their gender because of how hard it is to tell!
This is one of the few Zelda games that made justice to Zelda herself. Seeing her going from insecure and powerless, to commanding the army of the united people of Hyrule, and fighting Ganon head-on is one of the most uplifting things I've seen in fictional media.
To be fair, she was fighting Ganon alone for a hundred years in BotW but yeah that too

Zelda has never really been weak? Many in Ocarina or earlier games but for the most part she has to suppress or hold Gabon’s immense power otherwise he can destroy the world. And she has to do it waiting for Link to awaken his power. It’s just we play as link slowly progressing but Zelda is already holding back Ganon for the most part. That’s why it’s. Trio not a Duo with a random person saving her. It’s not like she’s not doing anything. Without her, Ganon would literally be able to do what he wants

I’m not necessarily mad about the story in this game, it’s super cool, but I can’t be the only one who feels a little played. I mean the entire selling point was that it was a prequel to breath of the wild but it’s literally the opposite, a timeline where breath of the wild never happened. But I still really love this game and all ready played the crap out of it.

I've been having the same conflict. My only complaint about the story is that BotW exists. I get the timeline splits, but I was really excited about the prequel idea. I kept thinking, even through chapter 7, that SOMEHOW things were going to tie into the destruction of the kingdom.
Yeah we were entirely misled. I feel the stakes were not high here as I didn't really know or care about this universe
It's an indirect prequel. It's actually what happened 100 yrs ago. The difference maker was that egg.
Maybe they were originally planning on it being a true prequel but then someone somewhere thought you know, maybe players would be unhappy with a game that they are destined to lose. Like who would want to play a game where you lose the battle? No matter how hard you try, you’re gonna fail. Gamers are built with a drive to win. It wouldn’t of been satisfying to play, despite being so in a storytelling sense. At the end of the day these games are created to make money so the creators can put food on the tables they need to go with the most marketable option. Anyway, a slight disappointment to the Zelda community but the most logical choice for the business boys. (I hope this makes sense, it’s 2am)
I'm actually glad it turned out to be a split-timeline deal. This way we get a great Warriors game with a cool, triumphant story and the original tragic timeline of BOTW isn't ruined.

Imagine in botw 2 Zelda and link go to zora’s domain and Sidon just teleported back from the alternate timeline and talks crazy about his sister and a giant Ganon but everybody shrugs it off as a bad dream but the player knows it’s not
you never know. that could infact might happen. only time will tell....
I think it's likely we'll get some small references to this game in BotW 2. For example you might have some dialogue with Riju where she talks about how she had a dream where she fought alongside Lady Urbosa and the rest of the champions to help defeat the Calamity.
I definitely think they'll reference Age of calamity's timeline as a dream.

To be honest, they shouldn't have been returned, Terrako was kinda scrap metal, not like he can send them back. Unless... the other Terrako that must exist in a 3rd timeline, brought them back. Or maybe they just got Back to the Futured and don't exist anymore aside from Sidon because he was already born, you know take your pick.

Technically, this is inaccurate. If they were brought back from the original timeline, they'd then be sent to the future in the AOC timeline, since there isn't any canonical way to jump in between timelines in Zelda, just creating them. So theoretically, they would have to adapt to their new future where Hyrule is at peace, but most of the champions would probably still be alive. Dunno if that made sense or not.
Well, actually it might start a full fledged paradox since two Sidons would exist simultaneously, but at the same time no because adult Sidon belongs to another timeline and can't be influenced by the young AOC Sidon.
@@maybezero2783 lowkey i think they took a similar approach to Endgame, with the “champions” from the future being like the infinity stones, and Terrako sending them back was like Captain America going back in time to put them back in their respective timelines. is it a super clean explanation? not really. but i think it serves its purpose

Can we just take a second to appreciate the amount of stuff in the game? They didn’t have to add kohga or rhoam or hestu into the roster of playable characters, or any of the time travelers. Hell, they made the great fairies and Maz Koshia into characters! There’s over 100 special challenges to do (I think, haven’t done them all yet), a solid story, and some incredible boss fights and fun gameplay. And they even added post game content for terrako. 9/10 game at LEAST
You can also unlock Calamity Ganon as a playable character.

@@Dr.Pootis It actually is just who ever the player is controlling. The other characters don't call you by name and after the cutscene you'll be controlling who ever you picked for the level. For most people it was probably Link though.

Dude my final battle against Ganon was crazy it came down to the last 1/4 of a heart on all characters, I couldn’t have asked for a more epic ending than that.

In terms of cinematic parallels, I think my favourite part of aoc was the evolution of people deflecting stuff from Zelda. Each time she's helpless and lost as people throw themselves in front of her to keep her safe, the camera pan is almost the exact same each time, even as she pressures Ganon for the first time she's pushed back and terrako throws itself in the way to protect her once more. Then, the final sealing cutscene, when Ganon puts all his energy into one final attack. The camera zooms in, but her eyes don't widen, they narrow. The world doesn't slow. She doesn't flinch.
And Ganon shatters like glass against her.

Im actually really satisfied with this being a one off mini split in the timeline. Then you get some fun twists in the story and if you really dont like musou games and dont wanna play it, you wont be missing out on the main story of botw and the upcomming sequel. It lets them do whatever they want with this story while letting it also remain canon and i think thats really smart of them.
I can agree with that, but they should've marketed it more honestly; they made everyone think that this game was going to be a direct prequel to Breath of the Wild, so what's really disappointing isn't the game itself, but the false-advertising that surrounded it.
I agree, but I do wanna point out my confusion on a lil thing like the clear envy and resentment Zelda held for Link at first, and yet this shows that she didn't mind him much at all before he drew the master sword, and he was already her personal bodyguard, and when he drew the sword in this one she didn't much mind afterwards either, because Urbosa talked to her about it. But in the original, he's already got the sword and she already hates him before he becomes her personal knight....am I right or am I getting confused? 😩🤔
Just as long as BOTW 2 doesn’t reference Age of calamity at all. The story was fine, but it felt like fan fiction, with how they just used time travel to solve their problems.

While I would have liked a tragic literal Prequel, I actually really liked the Story AoC chose to tell. I liked that we now have a new timeline split, I liked how they the handled the characters and I didn't mind the ending. My heart was aching everytime Mipha and future Sidon interacted and I liked how they gave the Yiga Clan a redemption in this timeline.
I just wish Nintendo hadn't advertised it as a direct Prequel to BotW, it was so misleading and is a big reason why several people are upset with this Game

Botw > one timeline of events.
AoC > second timeline of events.
That's two out of 3 timelines. Like in SS and Oot we have been able travel between two eras--two of the timelines. The third doesn't seem so simple to get to - in fact "that timeline" is likely dark world, lorule, termina, twilight realm and they have always required different methods to get there - cracks in the wall and portals.
In fact hyrule in twilight princess was starting to become like said places though - bottomless chasms and huge of swaths of land, simply not there. Din created the earth and with ganondorf gone, taking the triforce piece of power with him, hyrule is slowly falling apart like lorule and the twilight.
To be fair, this time they can control the branches individually now so it’s not as chaotic

I don't even think I'm halfway through the story yet, because of all the time I've been putting into the side quests hoping to get something good. So far the best tangible reward for doing them all seems to be a green tunic like the one from the original Hyrule Warriors. Well that and the fact that all the characters are unstoppable murder trains now because of all the combos I've unlocked.
The best reward is Calamaty Ganon. You can unlock him as a Karakter.

The execution of the story was brilliant. It stands firm on its own, but introduced a lot of new enemies that will be implemented in BOTW2. This is what happens when you work as closely together as the two companies did here. A very fun game to play indeed!
If only all that collaboration had gone toward an actual prequel with an interesting narrative, rather than a falsely-advertised game with a cliché plot.
Also, "It stands firm on its own" I don't see how this game's story can possibly stand up for anyone who has no knowledge of the backstory in BOTW.

Someone in one of Croton's streams said that malice is like a liquid, it takes the shape of it's container. It makes sense that if ganon absorbed a human e.g Astor, he would look humanoid. In the same way, absorbing the spider-like guardians make it look like a spider.

Thoroughly enjoyed this game, but I really hope they add an original timeline route as an update or DLC. I was ready to have my heart ripped to pieces and was left a little disappointed.

This game is incredibly emotional. I cried twice throughout the game when I played it. To put that into perspective, I have been told multiple times that I rarely show any negative emotions, not to mention cry. This was a sad, but amazing game

Did anybody else really not like how King Rhoam treated Zelda? I feel like a big reason for the fact that Zelda can't unlock her power is that her father treats her like a subject instead of her daughter.
Edit: I also really like how they refer to the Blight Ganons as "shards of calamity ganon." It makes it seem like its Ganon attacking the champions, and not his copy-paste goons.
Insecurity played a big part in why she could not awaken her power. It’s biggest trigger was her love for Link. Notice how in both timelines her powers only awakened when she rushes in to save Link.
You're not wrong. Rhoam keeping tight reigns on her prevented her from unlocking it. Only once she was free of those reigns was she able to unlock her power.
It wasn't Rhoam that was holding her back. And, as stated in his diary in Breath of the Wild, he was only like that because he didn't want anything to happen to her while fighting Ganon if she didn't unlock her powers
@@wtf_is_this_handle_shit It wasn't entirely Rhoam's fault, but he definitely played a part. He just didn't realize what he was doing was inadvertently hindering her.
I mean, there's Rhoam diary in BOTW where he admit he f*cked up treating Zelda like this, but it was too late to apologise. Terrako presence in this timeline made Zelda gave him the shield (found with her mother when young) so she could keep Terrako, to Rhoam reluctance thus effectively saving him... at least that's what I think

To be honest, instead of seeing alternate versions of the battles, i would have far more liked to see and play the original ones. Yes, it would have been a dark and depressing game, but really playing out the events before breath of the wild would have been amazing. Despereate battels for retreat, hopes being shattered over and over all for the one goal to buy one century of time for link and zelda to return and defeat ganon. Up until the last mission I was desperately hoping for a twist. I wanted a breath of the wild prequel, no fanfiction. But, after all, it was an enjoyable game (besides this absolute monster of a side mission, where you have to fight 3 lynels inside one of the shrine-arenas. I died so many times.)
I believe you can do this in the DLC where you play as Link BUT only carry what we can assume to be the champions' equipment against the blights
Agreed. I wanted to see a world not yet destroyed. I wanted to see things that Zelda didn't see and thus weren't in her memories. This makes me feel like botw was for nothing.
That mission with the 3 Lynels in 12 minutes was the actual worst

It would have been cool to see just how the fall of Hyrule played out. We see bits and pieces of it in BotW, but I would have loved a chance to see the details of it.
What did people do to try and hold back the Calamity, and how did they fail?
At what point did Link and Zelda know that the champions were lost? What did the champions think in their final moments?
Why had Link and Zelda been fleeing towards Hateno? Were they planning to meet up at the tech lab and try to regroup, or were they just going to head further south and try to get a boat to flee Hyrule entirely? Did they even have a plan or were they just running, too busy with surviving the immediate threat to think about what was going to happen next?
All really interesting questions that Age of Calamity just doesn't answer.
One thing I really enjoyed was seeing the champions interact with each other more, like how Daruk and Mipha planning to train together. Just seeing the other champions more in general was nice. I also really liked seeing the characters that weren’t fully voiced get to do so, such as maz koshia and the great fairies

I just realised that age of calamity still has some form of cannon malice seen in the botw2 trailer. This means that there is a real chance age of calamity could get a sequel.

If they save this new timeline purely for a series of canon Hyrule Warriors games, it would save on confusion. Have Hyrule Warriors follow the new timeline, whilst the main series follows the BOTW timeline. I think this would be nice.

@@andpeggy6048 Highly doubtful. They know AoC is a niche game. Besides, when people play botw2, they will expect a sequel of botw1, not a sequel of AoC. That would quickly become confusing to a LOT of people, and not a good sort of confusing. Besides, AoC even goes so far to include a loading screen message to confirm that the game's events take place in their own "world".
To stay safe, I would think it is best to assume that botw2 will follow on directly from the original story of botw.

Honestly this game was so full of twists! Who knows if will actually ever see this timeline again... itd be crazy if they did another split scenario like Oot. One where the calamity is slain. The other where the calamity wins.

@@soyboi6979 I hope we do. I want BOTW2 to follow the original BOTW story, but I would very much like a future Hyrule Warriors game that follows on from AoC. Let's have a series of Hyrule Warriors games that are canon to the extended Zelda universe.
The only DLC I want to see is an Original Timeline campaign where we see how the unaltered events played out. Nintendo said that this game would be a prequel; they should give us a prequel.
@@itsblurry9768 so basically terraco goes back in time bringing with him some of ganon. Which ends up taking over the "pasts" terraco. Since he goes back in time he creates a time paradox. He prevents the fall of the champions by bringing the 4 heroes who help link in BOTW battle the divine beasts. After the calamity falls they are returned to their times thus creating two separate timelines. also note that the 4 heros have already helped link battle in BOTW so im guessing they were either taken after the events of BOTW or during the 2nd game. Time travel is a confusing thing.

I loved seeing all the successors to the Champions come in, but the best two were Sidon and Riju. Sidon getting to be with his sister again makes me tear up every time, and Urbosa and Riju's mom/daughter relationship was excellent.

I love Zelda in this game. BotW's Zelda always felt off. AoC Zelda feels like she grows and actually comes into her role, and I love her in this game and her relationship with Link. She's also a delight to fight as.
Dead comment but being 116 years old and spending over 90% of your life span sharing a sac with hatred and malice incarnate would make anyone at least a bit "off." Honestly, just be happy she didn't lose the plot in there.
I mean, the whole world turned to ruin on her 17th birthday and she spent her entire life feeling like a failure that she couldn’t awaken her powers and save Hyrule. I think it makes sense for her to feel “off”

@@SynGirl32 Then how come Nintendo released Torna: the Golden Country, which was a DLC for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 that was a tragic prequel with a "downer ending"? Then there's Link's Awakening, which ends with the entire island and its inhabitants being erased.
@@matthewmuir8884In relations to what you said 1. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was developped by Monolith Software, not Nintendo, 2. Having the cartoonish island turn out to be a dream is a lot softer than explicitly killing the main characters in a more realistic game. On the more speculatory side, Nintendo might feel that they went through the BotW backstory already with the memories and the DLC. Not saying that was the right decision, but it makes sense.

@@foxtrap86flame I have spent like 5 Minutes thinking about this so forgive me if this sounds ridiculous and it will actually be the most awful thing ever.
So. Link gets defeated before Zelda's power awakens and only once he's dead for good, Zelda's able to get her power, but showing only the Triforce of wisdom that usually belongs to her.
Then, something really visually cool is put on the screen and it sort of turns out that Link's strength/spirit/Triforce of courage has somehow gotten into Zelda.
In this new game (The Actual Legend of Zelda), Zelda's the main protagonist, she's actually a warrior with the blood of the Goddess AND the courage of the Hero, that has to fight enemies and defeat Ganon only this time, instead of sealing him away, she definitely kills him once and for all, obtaining also the Triforce of Power and then using it to wish for Link to resurrect because everyone loves romance.
No you know what? I'm not going to apologise for my alternative reality, as I was really disappointed with this one.
I mean, I don't usually am a big fan of time traveling but at least in Ocarina of Time I find it to be justified by something different than the classic "let's go back in time to avoid a catastrophe". However, I could sort of accept it. But bringing actual people from the future is just too much for me. This wasn't what I was expecting so..

Does anyone else feel like this game is the most deserving of the title The Legend of Zelda? Zelda was much more up front and involved in this story than any of the other games in the series I’ve played.
Also I like the idea that Astor was just a calamity fanboy until the Harbinger wandered up on his doorstep.

Want to feel sad? Play aoc, replay botw (you can use another account if you want) just to remember in the original and “oficial” timeline, everything went horribly wrong

To summarize Zelda Age of Calamity, it’s basically Avengers: Endgame
It's basically "an excuse to have a spinoff set in the same world as a popular game without actually making it a part of the storyline of said game"

@@sergiovergaramontemiranda2116 Personally, I'm actually really happy that the whole thing is non-canon. I wouldn't want it to actually tie into BotW because spinoffs made by different companies will inevitably have a lower quality story than an actual main series game made by the actual developers, just due to the new people making it and their priorities. The Dynasty Warriors games are not known for their plots, they're known for their fanservice, which this game delivers on. Even if they actually tried to make a story that was canon to Breath of the Wild, it would most likely be a mockery of the game without much effort put into it. The only people who could do justice to Breath of the Wild's plot is Breath of the Wild's developers, and Tecmo Koei doesn't really have any place actually trying to write Zelda lore.
@@Jordan3DS i know and i agree this is better to be not canon, but it was SOOO easy to Follow the yellow path first (to treat the fans/respect the time line) and them do a fan service route where everything its Just funky and fun and they can do what ever they please.
I understand that MONEY, time and People are a big cost but a company as Nintendo i think should be able to pay those guys to make 2 routes (one canon and one no canon) and treat the fans in both ways without getting dissapointment from ANY side.
Now this game would be tained in Zelda fandom and BOTW 2 has a higher base bar to surpass

The feeling I get with this game when all of Hyrule, the champions, their successors from the future, and even the Yiga Clan coming together with everyone making it out okay, gives me the warmest feeling. Even if it’s an almost non canon story, I love that it’s here to tell a happier tale for all these wonderful characters.
Ive been waiting so long to watch this. I finally beat the game. Haha great great video. Thanks so much for this. This is so much better than just putting all the cut scenes together.
