    I really agree with Wood on the main point. It's not a penalty under a reasonable interpretation of the laws to go backwards in a scrum. It's only a penalty if you collapse it, or break your bind or something as a result of going backwards. But it does seem that a backward scrum means a penalty, which it shouldn't.

    Porter has improved discipline wise over the years but the refs are still looking at the old picture he painted. Still an indispensable player, quality and consistency

    I don’t think anyone even former front rowers know what is going on in the scrum. Nobody ever seems to explain it right and even after a referee has given a quick explanation of why they have given the penalty it often doesn’t seem to match up on the replay. One thing they could do is show the overhead camera angle on every scrum so we could see clearly if anyone is boring in.

    Only aspect of the game where you get penalised for being beaten by the opposition.
    Like giving a penalty for missing a tackle.
