@Lil PUMP Not like the honourifics. Only teachers and officers in the armed forces are sir for us. The old NCO's quote of "do not call me sir I work for a living" captures a lot of it.

There have only been 2 referees in my lifetime that have ever commanded the players. Respect. Collina in soccer and the indominatible mister Nigel! The most humblest person I met. He may not remember by name, but he will always pause that question "How Many Times I have Refereed You man" but he was a great genius. Rugby has complicated rules. Sir Nigel knew every word.
Well said was thinking the same. When Collina retired, he expressed a wish to do two seasons in England, as the English age was 2 years older. The Premier said No Thank You. Best ref in the world and they said no....idiots. Best ref I ever saw

I love how Nigel Owen’s gets so much respect from everyone largely because he’s an excellent ref who shows the players a great deal of care and respect
What's funny about a superb referee doing his job? I just love Nigel's knowledge of the game, his ability to defuse situations, and to make his point about a player TO the player without fuss, voice-raising or finger-wagging histrionics. My favourite: "What part of "Wait" don't you understand?"
I’m gonna show this video to all the new guys on our Rugby Team and let them know that THIS is how you treat the Referee! He is the consummate professional and I bet has some great stories from all the years he’s been doing it.

Nigel Owens is brilliant. Wish we got to see more of him down here in New Zealand in person. Like many greats before him, he'll be a huge loss when he retires.
I was shocked to see that and there was no need. Stuart H is an excellent player and a tough guy too. He doesn’t need to dive like that. It was embarrassing for him, his team and for rugby.
@@Leifr952 Well ofcourse, for non soccer fans, soccers most well know thing is the over dramatic dives. It happens once in a blue moon in other sports, but it happens in almost every single game in soccer.
Super sad to hear that Nigel is retiring, because it's such a joy to watch the matches that he's reffereed and knowing that there won't be any more is disappointing. Nevertheless I thank Nigel and wish him all the best! My personal favourite is "I'm straighter than that one."!

The fact he doesn’t even play rugby but still one of the most well known people in rugby is amazing
he played for his school but missed easy 3 points and lost the final and the coach told him to ref the game instead

Nigel is so missed in this RWC 2023. What an amazing gentleman! He is and will always be the SuperRef!
Tough, but fair, plus he is funny as feck. Couldnt agree more
His best has to be "I'm straighter than that one"
And “ah..Christopher” comes a close number 2.
That’s a classic.
Yup.
Just what I was going to say.
I thought his best was "I don't think we've met before , but I am the referee!'"
One of the funniest is the "Christopher" moment. The look he gives and the tone absolutely floored him like a naughty school boy 😆
The Joyce Grenfell approach.
Undoubtedly the best official to ever take to any sports field in any discipline!
Pierluigi Collina might disagree with that statement!
