- GMKtec sent me their NucBox K9 and NucBox G5 Mini PCs for review, so I tested them with some benchmarks and games, and assessed their usefulness for homelab use cases. They're two excellent systems, one which offers amazing power efficiency and great value, and the other which offers excellent performance and a 14 core Intel processor.

Note about the benchmark results: The results for Dirt Rally do not accurately indicate performance of the GMKtec K9. I do not currently know what went wrong when testing, but I have since tested Dirt Rally again and got significantly higher framerates. The settings and resolution were the same, meaning there may have been another issue causing this. The issue here has not affected the results for the other games, all of which were tested again on a fresh windows install to check their validity.
A commenter mentioned that the 85w MacBook Pro usbc brick will power my G5 safely. Amazon has them brand new at $14.95 USD. They dial down the voltage automagically. Thanks

I got the G5 256GB last week. Currently running Proxmox with 2 VM's running home assistant and MariaDB. It’s a nice little power bump from the Pi4 that I was running. Great price direct from GMKTec for £135 delivered.
Just got my G5, good call on the power adapter potentially causing damage to other devices. I was able to use a usb-pd cable connected to a 85w MacBook Pro usbc brick and it worked just fine. It uses like 20-30w under max load going by the readout on the cable itself.
Thanks for bringing this up, some chargers are able to supply 12v without usb-pd negotiation, and it appears that Apple's laptop chargers can do that (although not all power bricks can, so it may vary from brand to brand).
@@serverscience are you sure they can’t do usb-pd? These little cables (Soopii Amazon ASIN B0C9PMDVMR) have an indicator of if they are using PD or not and I noticed it does say PD when connected to the G5. It could be inaccurate though!
It may support PD, however it likely doesn't, as 12v isn't included in the PD spec. I can't confirm whether the system is capable or not, although the included USB-C power supply definitely isn't. I suspect the reason it works is because the pinout for the USB-C port is correct, using pins 4 and 9 for voltage and pins 1 and 12 for ground, meaning that a PD power supply with (additional) 12v-dc support simply allows the system to draw power when connected. To test this, I would need to find a USB-C PD power supply without 12v support, which seems difficult as I have multiple chargers that don't list it as being supported, but powered the system fine anyway.
for G5, if I use my own 2242 Nvme SSD will I get a license when I reinstall windows 11 pro?
I don't think value for money is very important. The important factors are heat, cooling, speed and size. Give me a system the size of the G5 without a fan and a USBC PD supply and NVME drive. I don't think you can compare the G5 to the HP and Dell.. apples and oranges because of the size or should I say apples and mandarins :) Mele have learnt their lesson with USB PD and their small systems don't use fans. Very good review.

I'm just curious, what do you use to film your videos with? And what mic is that on your shirt?
I use a Canon EOS M100, which is a camera I would never recommend to anyone. The microphone is a Rode Smartlav+, connected to a Zoom F2 recorder, both of which I've been very happy with.
IMO any PC that uses non standard USBC with out PD should be banned. The power supplies that come with the systems should be coloured bright red so someone doesn't accidently plug another device into it. Barrel plugs are so yesterday. All PC should have USB C PD. They should also stop providing power supplies. Just make it clear to buy a compatible wattage USB C supply. Also NVME... so much relies on drive speed.
Ok I'm in a World of hurt over this NucBox G5 thing! I upgraded to a 1Tb SSD, easy peasy, but the device refuses to boot into a Macrium Reflect (bootable) backup, or even a Win 11 install, both on USB (tried 3 USB drives). I set this BIOS to boot from the USN key, but it now appears from my research that it must be in "Secure Mode Boot" mode.
When I attempt to set "Secure Boot" mode I get a message saying "Repeat operation after enrolling Platform Key (PK).

However as I am not a computer expert I want to confirm that the "Custom" alteration is OK and won't stuff up my brand new device??
I never thought it would be this complicated to just upgrade the SSD!
