  • Meet Samara Johnstone, a farmer from the Isle of Islay - the southernmost of the Inner Hebrides islands.
Samara and Ed Burrell took on Cornabus Farm -- her family’s extensive beef and sheep farm -- in 2020. Since then, they’ve adapted the farm in a way which works for them and for the environment.
The pair find pleasure in living in a thriving farming community, amongst beautiful surroundings. Together, they rear Limousin and Hereford cross calves and Texel cross lambs in a nature-friendly way.
Their aim is to create a happier healthier farm. Samara talks about using less machinery, bringing up healthy stock and looking after the soil, all whilst ensuring the farm is viable and profitable.
The valley is home to a varied population of wildlife which they use to benefit both animals and land; the symbiotic relationship between birds and cattle is a beautiful example of this. Rotational and mob grazing is being implemented to improve the grass, using the cattle to target areas for grazing.
At this greatest period of change in the farming industry, Samara presses on the need to think seriously about what we’re doing with our land and how we can look after it for the future.
This video is part of our #RethinkFarming campaign to show how UK farmers can deliver on climate change, nature recovery and sustainable food production.

Beautiful, your ideas sound viable and ethical. Permaculture is the way forward. Best wishes from Lancashire.

A few trees sown amid the rushes will improve drainage at the expense of most of the rushes. Trees need tree guards in early years or animals will eat them or break them.
