😮what were you repairing when you working on something green like a John Deere tractor & it sounded like water was being drained out. Doesn't ring any memory bells on my childhood memories. of watching my dad work on his tractors. He had Allis Chalmers & a Cock Shot. My mom shot the new Cock Shot when dad was trying to teach her to shoot his new 22 rifle. Last time she ever shot a gun.

JD #1020 JD#2020 Deisel, Scoopmobile, I recall at the age of seven operating this equipment: engine oil, coolant, fuel, hydraulic fluid ( splish, splash ) Who could forget the evolution of vintage tractors. Cole Thanks for the Water station update. They make them here in Saskatchewan for goats, I always wondered how they worked. Ellie reminded me of my dog when I take her out to clean the driveway. After about 15 minutes she is like hello can you let me in. I have places to be and things to do that doesn’t include freezing my tail off. Stay warm and stay safe.🥶

I was kind of bummed out because of all the rain we're getting here. Then I saw you guys working in that freezing weather and decided I don't have it too bad.

My mom uses an electric blanket thrown over the hood of her car at night inside the garage in the North on the border of Canada. It might be a good idea for a tractor inside of the shop to make sure that you always have at least one tractor working.
Our whole family came very close to meeting Jesus by asphyxiation. Dad’s work was across the street from our house and the man who owned the machine shop called when daddy didn’t show for work, he didn’t see anyone moving around outside and the porch light was still on. He brought two guys over with him and they took us out and laid us on the lawn and got us to the hospital. We, all seven of us were sick for a few days but we all survived. The culprit? Not a sewer vent, it was a break on the gas hot water tank vent. Be careful on the roof, Cole.
Those pigeons might be frozen to the metal. Ya think?

Just went through that middle of January 44 below with wind chill and 20 plus inches of snow. Every morning went out and talked to ole Betty she fired up every time

When you plug your tractor , put your head down where it goes into the motor block and if you hear a hum noise then the heater is working . Always works for me .

I was in high school many yrs ago & my aunt stopped by the school on a particulary negative cold day ...
Some boys standing near the entrance said , as she walked by, "its cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey "
Now we were all christian folk & that kinda talk was frowned on...
I met my aunt in the hallway & she was horse laughing ..
I was it bit surprised to see her for starts , but to see her hysterically laughing surprised me more...
She then told me what she had heard on the way in ..
Then asked had I heard that before , after repeating it to me.
I had heard it many many times , but I said , "uhhhh....no auntie I had not".
I didnt want her thinking I hung out with rough talking boys , so I fibbed ..
In fact , I used that phrase many mornings feeding our cattle & pigs...

Some occupations people can work around the cold, but not farming. Yes, you can dress for the cold - sort of - but sometimes it just chills you through and through. I was in Central Alberta a couple weeks ago and the temperature dropped to neg 40 with a wind chill of about neg 50. Living on Vancouver Island, I don't see those temps anymore, although I was raised in cold country. I appreciate what you and your Dad face in those brutal temps, Cole.
Yea, our warm weather friends dont realize how difficult it is to get things done in weather this cold. The smallest job is a struggle. Nothing wants to work...including me.😅 Makes me wonder how the cows survive !

When cranking the 4050, jerk steering wheel back and forth. This relieves hydraulic pump from having to make full pressure which makes cranking much easier on starter. Try it; you will like it!!

having a heated workshop is a blessing in disguise for any farmer (atleast here in finland where we sometimes have over -30 celcius weather for a week straight) for the "daily use" tractor

When the snow squeaks you know it is COLD!
Our cows did same thing, came RUNNING into lot from pasture, ran to corner that should have been sheltered, stayed about 5 minutes, ran to another corner that had trees, stayed about a half hour and headed back out to pasture when we had all that bitter wind chill and cold. Glad things have warmed a little. Snow about gone but it did soak in, we needed that.

Brrr...it got cold here too, Cole. plummeted to 62F last night, recovered to 74F by 2:00pm. Greetings from Costa Rica.
That cold up there is too brutal for me, glad to know it is nearing its end! Finding the right direction on that block heater hole made me want to say something that isn't proper so I won't, Brian will know what it was though, it was used all thru the late 70's & early 80's in my area, he likely even said it off record time.🤫 I remember having to replace a rubber brake line on a vehicle during weather like that outdoors, couldn't even dream of doing it now. You guys take me back years ago of what I could once do, great video showing the hardship of hard working in cold weather.

Up here in the great white north I use Fluid Film on the PTO shaft on my bale processor that spends the entire winter out side. A few times a winter does the trick.

A little trick for replacing block heater. Remove radiator cap, duck tape shop vac hose to opening. Turn shop vac on as you remove element, you will loose a little into vac and on the floor but not much. If your quick😊

I grew up in Jamestown, ND. It was one of my jobs in the winter to clear ours and the elderly next door neighbor's sewer vents. Don't have to do that in Seattle. When I moved out here in 84, people saw the cord hanging out from the grill of my car and thought I had an electric car.

When it gets down to minus 15 or more ive had trouble getting the tractor started even when plugged in. So now when it gets that cold i cover the hood with and old blanket and wrap a tarp over that. Had no trouble since i started doing that. To check if my block heater is working i use an infared thermometer...saves a bit of trouble! Good luck and stay safe!!

Cole, I live in northern Canada and it's way colder here than there, and I've never seen a vent pipe freeze over like that, the reason is, is because yours is way too short and should be at least two feet off the roof to get better wind, the wind creates a venturi in that pipe, helping suck out air, if it's too short then there's no suction and the slower moving air will freeze easily. Add an extension and you won't have that problem.
it has more to do with the moist air condensing when it hits the cold air and freezing , a longer pipe might help but will only for ice further in the pipe making it harder to keep clear, hence why people use hot water, taper the pipe at the 45 with the long side toward the prevailing wind , in SD, its usually west,nw
@@kenberscheit948 welll the short pipe easily gets covered by snow when it's sitting that close to the valley between two roof pitches, the warm air melts the snow and freezes over, high wind carries the snow away and you're left with a frozen over pipe, having a much taller pipe would stop this from happening. Those pipes need wind to help vent more efficiently. In all my years living in -35°c winters I've never seen nor heard of a main vent stack freeze over like that.

You can keep sewer vents open by taking cooper pipe T one long pipe on bottom two short pipes to make up a T vent and drop the long pipe down the sewer vent and it will prevent from freezing up. The more you know.

I am sure the cows would appreciate a run-in shed, near your feed bunks no grazing in the winter anyway. Cattle may need less feed if there warmer, and a run-in shed or two would make a nice project for the channel.
Down here in Oklahoma we only have that kind of cold weather occasionally. For that we are grateful.

I'm not accusing you of doing it, but alittle FYI, always unplug the block heater before starting the engine and shut down the engine before plugging in the block heater. I enjoy your videos and the banter between you and your dad.
Diesel powered standby generators use block heaters and are always running on it's own thermostat if the engine is running or stopped. Many use the same block heater as these.

I've been told that, but I don't see any reasoning behind that statement. No disrespect meant.
Used a diesel heater to start a loader one time, loader started but melted a plastic air brake line, running loader but no move. Changed a block heater in -15F and had the same results. Cold can make a fool of us all. Keep up the videos.
Weird winter. South Dakota -40f windchill, and up here in "cold" Northern Ontario, Canada, it's +40f and raining. Thanks for the crunching of the snow when walking on it. I had forgotten what that sounds like :)

Is that sewer vent the only vent for your system? If it is, you don't have enough venting for your system. Your venting should be equal to or exceed the sewer system you are venting. If you are getting sewer gas in your house, you need to check the p-traps in the house. I am a master plumber with more than 50 years experience,
I was surprised just how small the pipe diameter was (unless you have more than one vent pipe) - ours is 4inch!!

Sewer vent tip. Go get a long stick of 3/4" copper pipe, 8'-10', and a t fitting. Cut 2 4" pieces and solder together with remainder of pipe. Drop it in the vent and it will never freeze. The heat from being down in the walls of the house keeps it open. My vents haven't frozen in 18 years.
Watch the connection when you first plug the heater in. You should see a slight arc when the connection is made. You’ll know for sure heater is fully functional. Stay warm and be safe!
