More steel toe shoe/boot teardowns please! It will be handy for those who are required to wear them at work.
Is it an American to need to buy your own work boots?
Where I'm from the choice of PPE on site depends only on the H&S manager who usually have a few references on hand and the shoes/boots are given to all employees on their first day
@@azerty1933
Not sure about America. I'm from Australia. Some employers will provide boots but they must come from a specific supplier, others will tell you to buy your own, and they might reimburse you.
@@volyota3117 I've worked in France and Ireland and in both countries your employer legally has to buy every PPE. The only thing you would buy for yourself are sunglasses if it's sunny(safety glasses adapted to your eyesight are also very often reimbursed by your company)
I definitely find crazy the concept of having to buy your own PPE to work
@@azerty1933many companies in the US that require there workers to wear steel toe boots will ask for a receipt of purchase and reimburse you for some or all of the cost of a pair.
American here have used boots in several fields. Some you provide your own, others give a stipend. Either way never covers the cost of the good stuff. Invest in the good stuff, you only get two feet, one lower back, two hips, you see where this is headed, protect your body with your gear.👍
I’m a retired from 36 years as commercial airline baggage handler. Safety toe boots was something, not required by my employer, I wore all day everyday. Safety toe footwear has come along way in comfort since I started. Thick leather & Vibram lug soles took some time to break in. The one issue overlooked for a long time in my industry & many others was the durability of the OUTER toe. You could wear the toes out in a matter of weeks depending on how much you worked. As a lifelong skateboarder as well I solved that issue by using the same thing we used as skateboarders to prevent toe wear. Shoe Goo & later spray on truck bed liner. On brand new boots/shoes I would adequately prep then apply 4 coats of Goo or spray. As they would wear I’d reapply after work so they’d have a fresh coat the next day. It was at least 10 years before the boot manufacturers started to incorporate a thick rubber toe cap to their safety toes boots design. Til the day I retired, 3 years ago now, I preferred my method.
Yo that's a fantastic method! Well done dude.
Yeah. It's the reason I wear Keen. They got that thick rubber cap on top of the safety toes.
@@QuickQuips Keen’s look great. A little too late for me but I’m glad the industry started doing it 👍🏾
Why do so many ppl in ur line of work steal out of bags or entire bags? Especially ones leaving California 🤔 it’s a very common problem here. Constant issues with ppls bags
@@GG.510 I can only speak in regards to myself & those I’ve worked with. I worked for a major airline. At a major tourist destination international airport. At the time I started it was a above average, union job, full paid health/dental/travel benefits job. We made good money & took pride in our work. The airline I worked for, along with other major carriers, have always contracted out services in smaller airports. These contract services generally non union, low wages & little or no benefits. I don’t think I have to go into detail as to what this could lead to. I’m sorry for your loss. I, for one would’ve treated your baggage with respect.
It would be really awesome to redo the bounce testing after the shoes/boots have been worn enough to break in fully and see if they are the same or if they degrade.
Really really awesome.
well, I agree, it'd be awesome but I don't see it happening, since they would have to have additional "wear" pair, since the one we are watching has been cut in half 🙂 so that would DOUBLE the cost, not to mention the time needed for that kind of test...
Just want to say thank you to Weston and the rose anvil team. I have bought the same pair of boots every 6 months for several years now (ariat western heritage r toe cowboy boots) and wore them for everything. From work to date night with my lady backpacking and more, these boots were on my feet. After being fed up with having to replace them every 6 months, I found this channel and have learned so much. For instance, my unicorn boot of one piece of footwear for literally everything is just that a unicorn. I have also learned what goes into making a quality boot and just ordered myself a pair of nicks. With plans to buy some more footwear in the future to fufill all the needs of my life. Thanks to this channel my wife hopefully only has to hear my constant bitching about boots until the long wait for my Nicks is over.
Personal opinion from several years of BOA usage, totally worth the price, even when having to replace parts.
Just so nice to be able to tighten on the spot withouy fiddling with laces, and they don't unravel.
Idk, I'll stick with traditional laces... epsecialy split leather laces like great grandpa's ww2 boots... the only good part on em is the laces after 80+ years XD
@@user-un5xj1wl6p Completely up to preference in the end of the day.
Had 3 pairs throughout the years and none has ever had failure.
Did change the laces on one of my dads work shoes, and it wasn't that hard.
Personally I'm a noob bootmaker, and I do plan on trying to make a pair with some BOA laces on them in the future.
I've been curious about the long-term value of these for a few years now and would love to hear more opinions from any other BOA users in the comments.
Use those redwings for work. I honestly set the BOA so i can get in n out and never have to tighten or loosen. 12hr shifts with insoles 5/6days a week and pretty comfortable all day.
To lend some more insight into the lacing system I am a former RW employee. It is a little bit more expensive to get the boa ($5-15 depending on the model) but Redwing specifically (idk ab other brands) does free lifetime boa replacements. As for comfort, a lot of guys who bought boa go back to traditional laced because it can never tighten as much as you want it to be at the bottom, but a lot of guys swear by it. It honestly depends on your food. Another comment on the red wing is that while it seems breathable that shoe can get HOT because of the plastic components. Again, depends on the foot. In my semi-professional opinion the red wings are a great shoe for indoor work. Very popular with lab workers and warehouse folks
Great video, I owned a pair very similar to the thorogoods. The one advantage I will add to it is the fact on the old school sneakers you can throw them in the washer. I'm not sure if you can with the red wings. I switched to boots because the soles of shoes wear out too fast for working on pavement all day.
Through junior high and high school for gym class I wore some steel toed Barharma (sp?) sneakers. All leather or at least leather of some kind and they held up extremely well and in fact saved my foot when in my high school weight lifting class a kid on the squat rack beside me lost it and dropped 315 lbs. The weights hit the mat and bouced before landing on my foot but the steel toe and thick padding ment I walked away with just a slightly sore foot instead of heading to the nurses office.
That for me sold me on the idea of a steel toe sneaker for use in places where a regular pair of boots are forbidden.
Could you do sketchers and keen shoes please. I work in a factory without ac, so boots get too hot. Those 2 are a lot more common than red wing and thorogood in the steel toe shoe game.
Sketchers are crap.
My dad buys them for work and they do not last him very long at all.
Yup 90% of my coworkers when I was doing warehouse type work wore skechers. I tried them myself and although really comfy and cheap, they just don't last, especially that initial comfort. For the jobs I did that required tons of walking though with some heavy lifting in between New Balances were unmatched, non steel toe of course.
I have keen steel toe sneakers that I got for 30$ on amazon. Heavy compared to regular sneakers but comfortable. Keep on eye out for sales.
7:18 I'm not sure about the US, but in the UK, you are told that as soon as anything heavy drops on your protective footwear, replace them immediately. That steel toe test proves the reason behind that in spades.
I've used work shoes with boa laces since this january, and I really like the system. Nothing has broken so far.
The Thorogood "Warehouse" Shoes in this video are the exact same ones that led me to discover this RUclips channel and my decision to buy a pair of Red Wing Iron Rangers back in April.🤣
I bought these Thorogood's on Zappos near the end of February [before they had any reviews]. I loved the fit and feel. But less than two months, the welt failed at the heel on the right boot, causing the upper and sole to separate. I left a review on Zappos warning people about it and saw three or four other people all saying the same thing.
Trying to find a good replacement, led me down the rabbit hole of boot reviews and ultimately to the Rose Anvil channel.
Try modern safety shoes just type that in and you’ll find some pretty nice converse looking ST shoes. Thank me later ❤
@@paytenblaackar2703 Nice, I see what you mean. I'll check them out again the next time I'm in the market for boots.
Thanks! Saved me a headache
I come to this channel to learn how to shop. I will never be this passionate about product design and shoes, but I appreciate someone who is and can boil that down into 10-20min.
Keen work shoes. Carbon fiber(composite) toe and aluminum are game changers. Not hot in summer. Good support. Lets you work
Good video, definitely interested in seeing more of these safety-toe light-duty work sneakers. I work in warehousing and always have to decide between the comfort of my HOKAs and being able to kick/drop pallets on my feet without excruciating pain (by wearing safety-toe boots) while also putting up with 10+ hours of working on concrete every day. Something that compromises in between would be ideal for me.
I have a pair of red wing hiker style work boots which are steel toe. they are incredibly comfortable for all day in a warehouse. in my opinion they are in the sweet spot of comfortable and protective.
I work in a steel mill and switched to steel toe/composite toe shoes over boots and it made everything from my back to my legs feel better at the end of the day. I was wearing Keens but switched to Reebok and I love them... basically what I'm saying is it would be cool for more of these steel toe reviews lol
what makes them more comfortable? because the steel part is rigid? I don't understand what the purpose of the steel part is, other than "if something heavy happens to land on your toe, wearing a steel toe boot helps". could someone please explain? I was hoping to see what the toe part actually looks like but unfortunately the video does not actually show it.
@@chochooshoe I was saying switching from boots to shoes made a difference for me. Not anything to do with the steel toe part but the steel toe shoes are lighter and breathe better than boots.
Way to give credit where credit is due. Class.
My company gave me a voucher to buy some steel toed boots when I started there 20 years ago. Picked out some low-top black sneakers. I live in the South so they were good in the hot Summers.
I am loving the ads in the past few videos. I love that you're advertising your own company.
I haven't used either of these but I use the USA made Danner BlackBelt composite toe shoe (apparently discontinued) as my gym shoes and I've used USA made Keen hard toe shoes as well. I'd love to see either or both compared to these two to possibly rekindle Danners interest in producing them as I find the Danners to appear more athletic than the Keens which look a bit like a cross between clogs and clown shoes with the bulbous upturned toe.
Wow! Welcome to the work boots we had in Sweden in the 90s. If I could afford it i would send you a pair of Jalas or Sievi.
Dude you are litterally my favorite person to watcg ik u prob wont read this but if u do i wsnt you to know u changed my life, i love your products and videos looking forward to 1 mill man keep making fantastic content
It’s good to see this channel so close to a million subs, keep up the good work
The charley crockett shirt thoughhh! Good taste
I’m a breadman. I get a red wing voucher yearly. We all got those shoes this summer over leather boots. I love the BOA. Definitely durable and light. I kick my bread stacks all around. They clean up easy too.
Steel toe Blundstones are crazy comfortable and durable.
Reebok makes a composite toe BB4500, I've seen them for sale at the local dept store and have thought about picking up a pair.
it actually isn’t very expensive to replace boas. if you contact them they will send you new parts for free
Dude. Red Wing looks like what a space dog on the Jetsons would wear. Sux. Go w the Cons look❤
can't believe this only has 30k views
At red wing, they offer free boa lacing replacement. They can replacement it for you or you can take it home & do it yourself. So no it's not expensive to replace.
I use my Wallet every single day that I got while over there, getting a great look and patina.
Those Thorogoods look like novelty slippers to me!
Never heard of aluminum toe?
They've been fairly popular for 15, maybe 20 years.
They're usually called alloy toes, because they're sometimes aluminum, sometimes titanium.
They're not as popular as before because they're slightly heavier than composites, but only (usually) slightly stronger than them.
With composites getting cheaper and cheaper, alloy toes have less and less to offer.
Typically they're less bulky than composites, because to get the same strength, composites need to be thicker than alloys.
They might be lighter but they're physically larger, that usually means a larger toe cap, which visually some people don't like, but also usually less room in the toe box.
Also composites don't conduct heat, so they're typically not as hot or cold in the toebox in extreme weather, and they're not electrically conductive, which can be a big factor for certain work environments.
I stick with my wolverine work boots, they may not be all that “high quality” but they don’t stink (but they have a mesh type lining) and are plenty comfortable. Also have a carbon toe which is nice, I might get a pair of redwing moc toe wedge sole boots, always liked the look of them
Oh, okay boomer.
I work as an indoor farmer and my work gave me $150 to use at the local Red Wings shop. This video came at a good time.
Keep these up. I have to wear safety toe and have tried many hiker and sneeker style still looking for the perfect one. Big leather boots are not necessary for all applications (for me its a hot flightline). Carbon toe by keen is my favorite so far.
Maybe even a series competition?
Hey man, could you please consider doing a review of Frye Harness boots whenever you return to your Cowboy Boot Series? Would love to see it!
Now this is right up my alley
hello, i just bought the adidas alphaboost V1 and i would love to see you cut it in half and talk about each different technology it has and what it is used for, i like the adidas alphaboost v1 shoes a lot and it would be nice to know more about them!
Thanks for this. I work in the heavy machinery industry, but as a product designer. I need safety toes per the company, but I’m behind a computer 100% of the timr
Thank you for reviewing these safety running like shoes . I was interested more about Rona shoes,as I purchased one of theirs and been very disappointed. None of the promised was delivered. Fantastic reviews you made though! Cheers from Finland 🇫🇮🇫🇮🇫🇮
Hell yeah! Hello Finland.
Could you imagine a boa lacing system on a pnw brand boot.
There needs to be a colab between the major athletic shoe manufactures and the safety shoe companies. There really is no safety shoe which combines the top foams of Asics, NB, Hoka, Brooks, and others with a nice wide voluminous safety cap. Reebok has some nice models, but I cannot put in the Orange Superfeet insole as the make my toes touch the safety cap.
Keep in mind actual leather RW safey boots like the Super Sole series weigh in at 3lbs+ per pair.
Думаю, у алюминиевого подноска несомненный плюс, что его можно хоть немного, но подогнать по ноге, выправить, что не получится сделать со стальным или композитным
The Thorogoods win in my view! Thank you for the great reviews and “cut in half’s.”
I have a review request/suggestion, Duradero moc toe. I have been wearing a pair for three months and have been impressed so far. I would love to know what the layers are in the sole without cutting mine in half, ; )
They come with one free resole/rebuild. Thank you.
Ended up using steel toe sneakers in a warehouse because they were just easier and quicker to zoom around the hateful place in. Downside is that they didn't last as long as other work boots
Can you review the Red Wing 2406? The sole is a key feature for longevity.
One thing I'd love to see you do is measure the width of the toe box when you do a safety toe. I have very wide toes and the deciding factor for me when buying almost any safety shoe is how much toe width is there? A great shoe with narrow toe that rubs me and makes me limp by the end of the day is going to lose out over a mediocre shoe with a roomy toe box that I can wear without any toe pain.
So, metal vs composite safety toes, assuming they can withstand the same impact force, you'd usually prefer the composite as metal does have the nice tendency to deform, as you saw in your test. Which is an issue, in some cases, especially partial hits towards the backside of the toe, they can fold over and actually cut through your foot. Getting your foot crushed is not a pleasant experience in any case, but bleeding out because the toe cut off the front 2 inch of your foot? Slightly less desirable.
Great vid, as always. I'd love to see this channel cut open some Duckfeet Fåborgs before I decide to pull the plug on them or not
I wouldn’t mind seeing how this compares to RW’s traction tred work boots. As they’re in a similar price range and made by sibling companies.
Can you Weston, make an all leather sneaker(high top) with just white and black leather, and an all leather out sole???
Thank you so much for the great video and review. Would be interesting if you did a series comparing different work sneakers.
As a request for future consideration it would be interesting if you could consider a review on the danner quarry boot or the russel moccasin boot.
Nice review, like always!
I just want you to know dude because of you I bought my first pair of quality handmade boots from Nick’s and I am so happy that I did and I plan to get another pair this winter. I might look at your website to see what you have to offer, but I just wanted to say thank you for motivating me to look into a better quality of footwear
Composit. Problem for me is the toe box room, exspecialy when you need to crouch and walking for 8hr on concrete floor. Would love to know what best options are. Insert better cushion sole? Comply to canada anti slip, anti puncture, anti static.
Do the Birkenstock QS700s it’s a safety toe boot that’s super comfortable
Thorogoods look pretty cool man. I wish they came in purple
I use full leather, full height boots with a steel toe, weighing in at 3 lbs. I'd rather have the ankle support and the added safety over comfort.
Good analysis!
Having tried your nice kilties on a pair of boots, I have a question. Have you tried making and using extra thick kilties to compensate for your "skinny ankles" in any boots?
It seems like a good solution. :)
I get $150 shoe allowance I like the sketcher kangston. They are 49 delivered. I get 3 pairs. One for work one for home and one goes to lucky neighbor same shoe size
Look at reebok safty work shoes in the past 7 year of running through shoes they have been the toughest for me
My favorite pair were Merrills
Could you do a deep dive into these "eco friendly" materials vs the traditional ones they replace?
Can you please do a video with a pair of Canadian forces parade boots, they are the direct descendants of those ww2 british boots you reviewed last year. They are extremely high quality and I would love to learn more about them
could you do a video on the reebok classic leather? its a very good shoe.
Great review! Would you also be able to review static dissipative work shoes too? My work only allows work shoes that are static dissipative.
It said the redwings are electrical compatible. Idk if that includes your question abt static or not tho
@@jimmylarge1148 Unfortunately, they are different performance requirements. It’s a bit annoying but my work place has flammable solvents and they mandate static dissipative to reduce the chance of starting fires. Thank you though
I like work shoes because boots just don't typically agree with me. A little bit more give for my stupid shaped and sized feet. I have a pair of the other boa shoes from RW but not a huge fan of the shoe because the heel is fairly flat which results in some heel slipping for me. Haven't tried the ones here. The heel looks pretty similar though.
I really like the teardown videos to see what it all is too. I love having more information on things. Sizing is one of the hardest things for me to find so that's a shame but at least this sort of stuff is floating around there right now lol
Aren’t boa replacements free with Red wing?
Get the Thorogoods and a skate board. But seriously, if I was working in a warehouse all day and needed the protected toe I'd go with the Red Wings. They seem way more comfortable.
I remember when steel toe sneakers was the rave back in the 90s
The redwings are kinda sick actually
Red wing looks good
If you work around horses, it's actually not recommended to wear steel toe shoes. Because the horse is strong enough, that their hooves can bend the metal, and chop your toes clean off. So it's much better to just let them step on your toes, and deal with the pain.
If anything is strong enough to crush the steel toe, the resulting crush injury would also be enough to cause eventual amputation. The safety toe is to keep your feet safe from minor drops and hits.
Facts.
Knew a guy many years ago who suffered from steel toe crush/amputation.
If the horse can destroy steel what do you think it's gonna do to your raw toes
Composite toes don't bend like metal, they crack.
Mythbusters tested this, it's a myth.
Hi,
I know this is off topic but I really want you to do a classic review on a pair of adidas stan smiths. I know you've already done one, but this one might generally surprise you, at least I was blown away. The shoe in mind is the stan smith core white/ off white/ panton. It's serial number is GY0028. The reason I want you to review them is, I bought them for 85$ (25$ discount) and they seem to have real, soft full grain leather throughout the entire upper, even the details on the back and the tongue. You can see pattern and grain variations, not just when comparing two of them, but also when comparing different panels of the shoe. I am seriously confused, it's a full grain sneaker at a price of 85$ with very minimal finish and no embossed pattern at this price point. Thanks in advance,
Miha
Reebok Work RB1910 as a suggested one to review.
I'm liking the thorogoods, but would still go with a proper leather boot steel toe cap
I have the redwings. I'm at a desk 90% of the time. They are comfortable, but the way the shoes look from the top occasionally makes me think I am walking duck footed.
Can you review the new Balance Fresh Foam X 1080v12 shoes please!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻
I deliver mail for work no matter what shoe or boot used I haven't had one last more than 3 months. I got 4 pairs of jim greens I need to buy new outsoles
I wouldn't wear either, but at least the Thorogoods aren't ugly as hell.
Keen’s San Jose is an aluminum toe. 😊
Nice 👍
I really want your opinion on the jordan 1 "Atmosphere grey" Especially in terms of the leather quality.
Bro if there's anything in your power that you can do to get thorogood to keep from discontinuing these please do. These are the best steel toe sneakers I've ever had hands down and I really don't want to wear anything else. So unfortunate they're getting rid of them everybody I know compliments me and wants to get a pair on the site I'm on.
please cover some chef shoes if possible! Or in general antislip shoes
Can you please do a 2412 red wing boot!!
Gut Meermin boots please
The Vaxy Commander has shearling wool lining, and look amazing
I like the the thorogood shoes but it’s a biased opinion because I love converse shoes
Would be cool to get your opinion on the Nick's Riverfront shoe
What is the problem with hunting boot series? Are Crispi or Zamberlan worth the money?
Could you do a deep dive into the Redwings 8in Tradesman w/ the boa system? It seems like a wonder boot being electrical, slip, oil, and puncture resistant, for almost $300. And it doesn't look half bad. I'm looking for a decent boot, and being a budget boot buyer my whole life I really wanna know before I spend that much on a pair of boots. I've tried looking for a video review and I just can't find one on that specific boot. Thanks for your videos!
Sketcher kangston is number 1 comfort and price.
I was really hoping to see the actual metal/alloy part... but I didn't see it. did I miss anything?
do bates men's 11 paratrooper side zip boot
the thorogoods looks like ricks
You really gotta do a pair of ramones or geobasket
