I've seen hundreds of Broadway shows in my lifetime, but the one I will always cherish is seeing Parade with Carolee Carmello. I loved this show so much, and I was virtually dragged to see it.
I was actually thinking the exact opposite. :) I love her voice! She gives me goosebumps each time I hear this song. Brent is awesome, too. His vocal control is incredible on that final, powerful note that transitions into a kiss. Simply amazing.
Brent Carver is an underrated performer, though I understand why some are questioning his giving Carolee nothing. I was 11 back when this show was on Broadway and was actually planning on seeing it thanks to having a Theatre-saavy mentor but the show closed so suddenly. I have seen Carolee on stage twice since then, but I would have loved to see this show. A powerful and underrated musical with a gripping story and of course Jason Robert Brown's insane score.
So glad I found this, because 1, I miss Rosie O'Donnell's show so much, especially the Broadway performances, and 2, I effing LOVE Brent Carver. He and Carolee Carmello were powerhouses in this show.
I'm a student at the University of Evansville, and our theater department recently performed this show. I was so blown away by it, I went to see it twice. They really pulled it off; it was fantastic.
lyrics LEO I will never understand What I did to deserve you, Or how to be the man That I'm supposed to be. I will never understand If I live a thousand lifetimes Why you did the things you did for me. Just look at you - How could I not be in love with you? What kind of fool could have taken you For granted for so long? All the wasted time, All the million hours, Pushing you away, Building up my walls; All the days gone by To glare, to pout, to push you out, And I never knew anything at all I never knew anything at all. LUCILLE I will never understand How all the world misjudged you When I have always known How lucky I must be. I will never understand How I kept from going crazy Just waiting there till you came home to me. Now look at me Now that you're finally here with me - Now that I know I was right to wait And everyone else was so wrong For so long All the wasted time LEO All the wasted time LUCILLE All the million hours. Years on top of years Still too proud to crawl - All the days gone by To feel that I don't satisfy And I never knew anything at all I never knew anything at all LEO All the wasted time LUCILLE All the wasted time LEO All the million hours. BOTH Leaves too high to touch, Roots too strong to fall. All the days gone by To never show I loved you so And I never knew anything at all. LEO I never knew anything At all
"And I saw you in CITY OF ANGELS, did I not?" "Probably." So wonderful! So humble! She didn't even correct her on her name!!! I hope she lands some hugs breakthrough that really shows her off sometime soon!!!! (Not that she doesn't always anyway)
@MIXOLYDIAN123 I consider JRB music to be some of the trickiest show music I have learned. Most of the 6/4 9/8 12/8 timing i have ever played has been in his music. Every type of dotted note you can imagine all mixed together. It's amazing though how often you encounter the similar rythms and chords throughout his songs.
Um, I'm pretty sure he can. Not only has he one a Tony, but he continues to be renowned for his acting it not only musicals but many Shakespeare plays.
Cool. Thanks Mixolydian. I've applied for an MD postgrad course in London and for the audition they want two piano pieces, one at least from musical theatre. Trying to find one. Will keep searching..
Lot of research has been done on the case since then and the consensus is Leo Frank was wrongly convicted by an overzealous politically motivated prosecutor pushed on by an angry mob looking to unleash anger from the loss of the civil war and antisemitism at the time, and a system that failed him.
I found it took a while to get this down pat. The sheet music is a bit different in timing, so you just need to play around with it. It's not too bad. Good luck:)
I'm sorry, Brent seems so unconnected to Carolee and to his performace in general. I understand that Leo Frank is a little cold but, he is giving Carolee nothing. No focus and no investment is evident. Carolee is fantastic all around like usual.
This performance is so awkward! Why does he keep abruptly turning away from her? They don't seem connected at all. Watching this made me uncomfortable.
+Antonio Gonzalez-Luna Their vocals aren't built as a conversation, but a personal reflection. With occasional physical connection. Are you familiar with the story and what kind of relationship their marriage was? If you are...this would make much more sense.
Oh my gosh, that reaction that Carolee gives when Leo says "how could I not be in love with you?" She is absolutely amazing.
Rest In Peace Brent. You will be remembered ❤️❤️❤️
I realize it's quite off topic but do anyone know a good place to stream new movies online ?
@Adrien Dakota flixportal
@Liam Anson thank you, I went there and it seems like a nice service :) I really appreciate it!!
@Adrien Dakota no problem :D
RIP BRENT CARVER.. WHAT A VOICE. GONE TOO SOON
Brent’s last note shocks me and brings me to tears. Both actors are emotionally raw, bringing to theater a rare, once in a lifetime time performance.
I've seen hundreds of Broadway shows in my lifetime, but the one I will always cherish is seeing Parade with Carolee Carmello.
I loved this show so much, and I was virtually dragged to see it.
This is literally one of the best songs of Broadway!
Her voice just gives me chills.
I was actually thinking the exact opposite. :) I love her voice! She gives me goosebumps each time I hear this song. Brent is awesome, too. His vocal control is incredible on that final, powerful note that transitions into a kiss. Simply amazing.

I saw the show WITH the both of them. Absolutely Brilliant! Them...AND the show!
So glad I found this, because 1, I miss Rosie O'Donnell's show so much, especially the Broadway performances, and 2, I effing LOVE Brent Carver. He and Carolee Carmello were powerhouses in this show.
Carolee's voice is brilliant... JRB is brilliant... everything here is brilliant.
Oh how I wish I was alive to have seen this show live…would’ve been amazing to see on stage! RIP Brent, wish I had the opportunity to see him live.
Sorry, but when Rosie makes him jump out of his skin at the end, thats the funniest freaking thing i've ever seen!!
I'm so in love with Brent Carver.
I'm a student at the University of Evansville, and our theater department recently performed this show. I was so blown away by it, I went to see it twice. They really pulled it off; it was fantastic.
My happiness is endless after viewing this. Love it. Love them. Love how Rosie scares the bejesus out of Brent Carver.
This performance always makes me tear up.
lyrics
LEO
I will never understand
What I did to deserve you,
Or how to be the man
That I'm supposed to be.
I will never understand
If I live a thousand lifetimes
Why you did the things you did for me.
Just look at you -
How could I not be in love with you?
What kind of fool could have taken you
For granted for so long?
All the wasted time,
All the million hours,
Pushing you away,
Building up my walls;
All the days gone by
To glare, to pout, to push you out,
And I never knew anything at all
I never knew anything at all.
LUCILLE
I will never understand
How all the world misjudged you
When I have always known
How lucky I must be.
I will never understand
How I kept from going crazy
Just waiting there till you came home to me.
Now look at me
Now that you're finally here with me -
Now that I know I was right to wait
And everyone else was so wrong
For so long
All the wasted time
LEO
All the wasted time
LUCILLE
All the million hours.
Years on top of years
Still too proud to crawl -
All the days gone by
To feel that I don't satisfy
And I never knew anything at all
I never knew anything at all
LEO
All the wasted time
LUCILLE
All the wasted time
LEO
All the million hours.
BOTH
Leaves too high to touch,
Roots too strong to fall.
All the days gone by
To never show I loved you so
And I never knew anything at all.
LEO
I never knew anything
At all
So fantastic! I hope this show comes back into the spotlight, it's a real eye opener!
Jason Robert Brown's best work. by far.
This video is my happiness. They are so effing perfect!!!!!!!
Oh my God you have the full version! AWESOME.
Thanks so much for posting!
I don't get why so many people are complaining about Carolee's voice -- I love it! And it fits the character.
Jesse Dalton ... her voice gets “on my nerves”. She’s sings on key, her pitch is good. I just don’t like her vibrato.
thank you so much for posting all of this. its one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite shows. ugh love it so much
Oh, this brings back wonderful memories. Thank you so much for uploading this!
"And I saw you in CITY OF ANGELS, did I not?"
"Probably."
So wonderful! So humble! She didn't even correct her on her name!!!
I hope she lands some hugs breakthrough that really shows her off sometime soon!!!! (Not that she doesn't always anyway)
beautiful song
i also love the way that Rosie scares the shit out of Brent at the end there :P

incredible.
Lovely!
RIP Brent Carver....
god brent carver is amazing
3:47 I'd react like that too if Rosie O' Donnell appeared behind me as well.
Cool. Thanks Mixolydian. I've applied for an MD postgrad course in London and for the audition they want two piano pieces, one at least from musical theatre. Trying to find one. Will keep searching..
THE show that got away for me... Just thinking about that makes me SO sad...
Twice.
Then calls her Carol at the end.
Oh, Rosie. lol.
@singingme2000 actually, they resolved the case some years ago and pardoned Leo Frank posthumously
She got a Tony nomination!!! Come on!!!
But if you're auditioning as an accompanist for musical theater it would be a good one to take in right!?
She said "Carol Carmerlo - Carmello. Sorry."
Oh yeah, anything Jason Robert Brown is very difficult for even experienced pianists.
Why does Rosie say he was unjustly convicted? There was no answer or final answer in the trial because he was killed....no one knows....
Lot of research has been done on the case since then and the consensus is Leo Frank was wrongly convicted by an overzealous politically motivated prosecutor pushed on by an angry mob looking to unleash anger from the loss of the civil war and antisemitism at the time, and a system that failed him.
Because he was, 🙄
@@victordunson719 right even his assistant said that he didn’t do it
@Myrthmor good question!!
there is a cut for TV...this isn't quite the full song...unfortunately
3:28 = most beautiful sound ever
...thats her natural voice. It might be a little more simply cause she's nervous but thats how she always sounds.
Would this accompaniment be classed as difficult for a musical theater pianist?
@btbaldwin -- Rosie apologized to her, what do you want?
I wish they'd done the full song - I don't like that Carmello gets shortchanged.
I found it took a while to get this down pat. The sheet music is a bit different in timing, so you just need to play around with it. It's not too bad. Good luck:)
Ben Platt slays too
She apologized.
CHEATER! CHEATER! CHEATER! THE SONG WAS CUT SHORT
difficult because it's jason robert brown, but definitely one of the easier of his rep.
@Myrthmor
Brent destroys me.
aighh. .the regret for mr. green jeans.. how i wish i would have gone to see this when it was on broadway...
yeah, the vibratto is really unsettling to me.
WHAT!?
parade is my favorite musical, and i hate musicals generally!
lol :-)
