"I will never understand" why the 2022-2023 (Platt-Diamond) production of "Parade" on Broadway kept advertising "This is not over yet", when THIS is the BEST song of the show for these two roles.
To be fair, might be a bit cruel to have this beautiful romantic ballad as the thing everyone gets excited for and then discover this is the last song before our hero is brutally murdered.
this is my favorite version of all the wasted time. not only it sounds absolutely gorgeous, the acting and little detail they add to the performance makes it so perfect.
I will never understand, What I did to deserve you, Or how to be the man, That I'm supposed to be. I will never understand, If I live a thousand lifetimes, Why you did the things you did, For me. Just look at you. How could I not be in love with you? What kind of fool could have taken you for granted, For so long? All the wasted time! All the million hours! Pushing you away. Building up my wall. All the days gone by, To glare, To pout, To push you out. And I never knew anything, At all. I never knew anything, At all. I will never understand, How all the world misjudged you, When I have always known, How lucky I must be. I will never understand, How I kept from goin' crazy, Just waitin' there, 'Til you came home, To me. Now, look at me, Now that you're finally here with me, Now that I know I was right to wait, And everyone else was so wrong, For so long! All the wasted time! All the wasted time! All the million hours! Years on top of years, Still too proud to crawl. All the days gone by, To feel that I don't satisfy, And I never knew anything, At all. I never knew anything, At all! All the wasted time! All the wasted time! All the million hours! Leaves too high to touch, Roots too strong to fall. All the days gone by, To never show I loved you so, And I never knew anything, At all. I never knew anything, At all!
I know it's not uncommon, but you can usually see the reason behind it: i.e. it suits an actors range better (most common with celebrity casting). Like I say, I can't see that being an issue here!
Could it have been for Laura? Either because it was lower than her beautiful soprano vocals are used to going or just to let her show off her high notes a little more?
Jason Robert Brown seems to do this a fair bit for this show, for example in the London cast the key for You Don't Know This Man was changed. Not sure if any of the other songs with Jeremy were taken up or not but Leo is actually written in a baritone range (even though the part sounds best sung by a lyric-baritone or a tenor), or it could have been for Laura since since she's a soprano and the role was written for a mezzo, or it might have been for both of them of just because JRB felt like it for all we know.

“All The Wasted Time” doesn’t really have the upbeat energy they probably wanted as the face of their show
YEEES!

This musical never got the praise it so deserved. It was before its time.
The way he says “okay” and holds her at the end
I’m SICK 😭
I know. That “okay” will haunt me forever.
Laura Benanti with a Southern accent is literally everything
Jeremy and Laura did an amazing performance portraying Leo & Lucille. ..a performance that touches the heart..well done!
there will never be a better rendition than this
This is the best rendition in terms of singing, because it is a concert. The version Ben and Micaela sang delivers way more emotion.
and has at least the same quality of singing too ( to my opinion)
This higher key is giving me everything! They are absolutely wonderful together.

Best version there is to date.
That look that Lucille gives after Leo say 'Black Eye Susan's' breaks my heart each time
SAME. I love that look on her face. She's so relieved that he is playing along.
Me too. There’s so many brilliant acting choices in this song.
I'm crying at this perfection
i get chills everyime. especially at 5:10
Nothing can make me cry like this video
Such an incredible performance! I absolutely love these two amazingly talented performers.
This song is so beautiful 😭😭😭
So beautiful and so sad!
Holy sh*t, Jeremy is way epic in this.
He's epic in literally everything. I've never heard the man give a bad performance in his life.
uhm, in EVERYTHING he does.
He should have been Leo. Ben Plat could never.
I will never understand,
What I did to deserve you,
Or how to be the man,
That I'm supposed to be.
I will never understand,
If I live a thousand lifetimes,
Why you did the things you did,
For me.
Just look at you.
How could I not be in love with you?
What kind of fool could have taken you for granted,
For so long?
All the wasted time!
All the million hours!
Pushing you away.
Building up my wall.
All the days gone by,
To glare,
To pout,
To push you out.
And I never knew anything,
At all.
I never knew anything,
At all.
I will never understand,
How all the world misjudged you,
When I have always known,
How lucky I must be.
I will never understand,
How I kept from goin' crazy,
Just waitin' there,
'Til you came home,

Now, look at me,
Now that you're finally here with me,
Now that I know I was right to wait,
And everyone else was so wrong,
For so long!
All the wasted time!

Years on top of years,
Still too proud to crawl.

I'm in love! This is so beautiful!
The hand placement along with the music at 3:40… when he whispers “okay” and “thank you” and “lucille”…
Oh lord this is amazing
my high school just did parade. and i felt like our version was much better than what you hear in the recording. but this version surpasses all. omg!
This is one of my absolute favorites.
Wow! Crying.
I love this
jeremy just casually belting for a solid 15 seconds like nbd :’)))
WOw. Just.. wooOOOOOOOWZA.
I love this duet :) I so want to do Lucielle!
Broadway revival pleaseee!!!
Jermey JORDAN AT 5:10 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pure perfection
Pretty sure I felt my soul leave my body at that point😂
How is this man REAL
I'm quite jealous of that girl
She would be a fantastic Maggie the cat.
Any idea why they changed the key? Granted JJ is a tenor rather than a baritone but I still wouldn't have thought it would be an issue for him
It is not all uncommon to change a key for a new actor. They do is all the time in Broadway productions.
I know it's not uncommon, but you can usually see the reason behind it: i.e. it suits an actors range better (most common with celebrity casting). Like I say, I can't see that being an issue here!

Ah, yes. I think the comment about showing off Laura's range is probably the most likely! Interesting choice from JRB, though, either way
What musical is this from?
Parade
+Boston_to_Broadway Thanks
all that kissing...
Aren't their age differences way too far? Or am I just stupid?
She's 36, He's 31. It's not a crazy difference.
There are no close-ups in theater.
+Enjoli Desiree ok. Thank you it's just I was confused.
There is an age difference but hes in his early 30s while shes in her late.
Haha Laura Benanti has always looked older than her age. Her looks and age didn’t match up until her late thirties to forties 😂
