They were mic’d and their mics were never turned off so you can hear their voices over everyone. Not that I’m complaining. I’d listen to Audra or Marin singing over everyone any day!
Even Rosie O’Donnell knew that “Ragtime” was going to be on the great pantheon of musical theater. Unfortunately this musical isn’t played that much, it should be since the problems those three sides faced are still current in our society, it should be played in EVERY point in this globe for it’s timeless message
I love how you can hear Marin and Audra's voice soaring above the others, which may just be that they had mics and most everyone else didn't, but you know what since it's the delectable voices of Marin Mazzie and Audra McDonald, I am perfectly ok with that. This show was perfection and I'm so happy it's being revived! I'll just miss Marin, Audra and Brian Stokes-Mitchell. They were all completely brilliant!
I saw this episode & loved this performance. A few months later, on Easter Sunday, I saw it on Broadway. It blew me away. Audra MacDonald was mesmerizing. I had no idea 'til now that Lea Michelle played the little girl.
Such a beautifully performed number, beautiful melody and brutally blunt lyrics. A microcosm of society with all its cruel separations. When will we ever come together?
"Ragtime" IS the best show I've ever seen, heard, felt and cheered. From every aspect, its power sustains all these years later. perhaps more relevant than ever. The combination of talents that went inot this production give me chills and tears everytime I hear or see this video. Can't say that about many show opening numbers. They were all divine! Wish I could havenbeen that show, just to perform that music, those lyrics 8 times a week. What a dream job!!!!!!!
Had no idea Lea was in ragtime at all! let alone playing the little girl who i played in FCT's production of it. Most amazing experience of my life. words cannot describe how amazing that show is and to have the honour of being in it is priceless :) Brilliant.
I cry with joy whenever I see this clip. I was lucky enough to see this original cast of Ragtime back in 1998 and they were so good, and the musical was so good, it had such a profound impact on me and it changed my life forever. RIP Marin Mazzie, she was an icon and there’s never been another broadway actress like her. So talented and wonderful.
It was this musical, and my parents/ grandparents, and my Minnesotan amazing progressive high school teacher’s that taught me to be liberal! Go Harris/ Walz💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙
A simply brilliant musical-saw it Toronto twice before it opened on Broadway where I saw it two more times-wore out the CD from playing so much-so sad that it lost the Tony Award, deserved a much longer run!
Lea Michele is so cute here! :) This musical is so good, so sad that it's closing on Broadway. :( I love how Rosie always puts Broadway into her shows!
it was the music of something beginning an era exploding, a century spinning in riches and rags and in rhythm and rhyme, the people called it ragtime, ragtime!
@iou50bucks I believe the woman stretching the C6 at the end is the woman holding the baby....although I'm sure Marin can sing a C6 too. She was classically trained, and a C6 is easily stretched for Sopranos. I don't know what her fach is, sing I haven't heard her sing opera, but for musical theatre, she is definitely a Soprano, although she does sing a lot of Mezzo songs too.
So if you look closely, when Tateh appears, and later when they focus on him at 3:46 you will see a 12 year old Lea Michele, better known as Rachel Berry on Glee! She originated the role of "Little Girl" in this show. I have loved this show for ages, and totally didn't make that connection!
@G4Rat I am such a huge Audra fan. So sorry I missed seeing this the first time around, but I did see her first show which was Carousel when I was 6 and loved her ever since! I think she defies the word "angel."
I saw this with the original cast when it first came out. The **ONLY** reason it did not when Best Musical was because it had the unfortunate luck to debut in the same year as "The Lion King".
I did see it in person on Broadway!! Even when to Philly when it was on tour. I just love it so much and want to watch it again but understand the reason they don't bring it back.
thepurlfisher Oh, that must have been great on Broadway! I saw it when it was on tour, last year. I think I understand what you mean now. A movie, or a complete recording of the stage show, would be nice!
What he’s up to now. He’s a mixologist and hasn’t done broadway since Ragtime dc.eater.com/2011/10/4/6646479/shab-row-bistro-mixologist-alex-strange-shares-his-ink-and-his
I like how Audra just casually sings over everyone.
Not to mention Marin ❤️
They were mic’d and their mics were never turned off so you can hear their voices over everyone. Not that I’m complaining. I’d listen to Audra or Marin singing over everyone any day!
In the beginning it sounds like Audra McDonald is singing offstage because you can hear her voice in the ladies "la la la la la" 😂
Even Rosie O’Donnell knew that “Ragtime” was going to be on the great pantheon of musical theater. Unfortunately this musical isn’t played that much, it should be since the problems those three sides faced are still current in our society, it should be played in EVERY point in this globe for it’s timeless message
Bruno Apresentação agreed!
I would say this is the greatest Broadway musical ever. I love this show so much, so damn much.
Evan Brook
precisely this is my favorite musical as well
Just saw it live, it was amazing
Me too! Favorite mystical, favorite songs from any musical, favorite original cast. The original cast was breathtaking perfection.
The way Brian Stokes Mitchell twirls his hat is just breathtaking :-)
I love how you can hear Marin and Audra's voice soaring above the others, which may just be that they had mics and most everyone else didn't, but you know what since it's the delectable voices of Marin Mazzie and Audra McDonald, I am perfectly ok with that. This show was perfection and I'm so happy it's being revived! I'll just miss Marin, Audra and Brian Stokes-Mitchell. They were all completely brilliant!
And a very young Lea Michelle as The Little Girl !!
Oh my gosh, audra's high B at the end. :DDDDD SO FREAKING GOOD!
I wish someone would bring this play back. I was the best production ever.
It's so funny. Lea Michelle looks just like her present self but shrunk down to kid size.
Lmao right !!!!!!!
Wait, that’s Lea Michelle? Ha!
she's always had an old woman's face
@@nan1577 no she didn't what a weird lie to tell.
AUDRA MCDONALD I LOVE YOU. she seriously has one of the most beautiful voices i've ever heard. it is so smooth and perfect and AHH I LOVE HER
RIP Marin Mazzie.
I saw this episode & loved this performance. A few months later, on Easter Sunday, I saw it on Broadway. It blew me away. Audra MacDonald was mesmerizing. I had no idea 'til now that Lea Michelle played the little girl.
jucaha1 hey singing "Your daddy's son" always equal tears.
Audra McDonald is absolutely amazing. I love her so much. Her voice is pure. Lea Michelle is so young and so cute
Such a beautifully performed number, beautiful melody and brutally blunt lyrics. A microcosm of society with all its cruel separations. When will we ever come together?

This opening number gives me goosebumps... love it
I was 17 when I saw this on Broadway a few years ago and I thought it was incredible!
This was her second role on Broadway. The first was young cosette in Les Miserables. Then this, then Spring Awakening.
StephanieSamara after this Fiddler on The Roof before Spring Awakening opened on Broadway!
Audra killed that note at the end. wow I love her :}
I fell in love with theater because of this play
I wish I could've seen this original cast! It would've been a mind blowing experience!
I did, and it was.
I saw a Broadway production of "Ragtime" back in '99! It was a wonderful show and one of the best memories I have. :)
I love how Lea Michele has always looked the same haha
Had no idea Lea was in ragtime at all! let alone playing the little girl who i played in FCT's production of it. Most amazing experience of my life. words cannot describe how amazing that show is and to have the honour of being in it is priceless :) Brilliant.
Again and again, this as thrilling and enjoyable as when first viewed, even this abbreviated opening scene.
Now THIS is Broadway Music!
This number always gives me chills and makes me tear up. Soo good!!!
This show, more than any other showcased the way how music can connect people without them realizing.
Amazing they got so much of the cast to move so well on that tiny stage area .
Lea Michele plays the little immigrant girl. I saw this show back when it played on Broadway. Little did I know I'd be seing a future DIVA! :)
I love the way they say ragtime :3 its so jazzy
Just streamed the movie Ragtime tonight
take another bow... take another bow... TAKE ANOTHER F**UCKING BOW DAMMIT!
That hat spin though...
2:32
This is one of the best shows in Broadway history.....and one of the best songs!!! Thanks for posting!!!
It was this musical, and my parents/ grandparents, and my Minnesotan amazing progressive high school teacher’s that taught me to be liberal! Go Harris/ Walz💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙
Wow... though it'll be great to see a new revival... nothing can compares the original cast!!!
A simply brilliant musical-saw it Toronto twice before it opened on Broadway where I saw it two more times-wore out the CD from playing so much-so sad that it lost the Tony Award, deserved a much longer run!
Lea Michele is so cute here! :)
This musical is so good, so sad that it's closing on Broadway. :(
I love how Rosie always puts Broadway into her shows!
An absolute masterpiece
@G4Rat
Audra has the voice of an angel!
I am such a huge fan of her. Always have been, always will!
HOLY CRAP ITS LEA MICHELE!
I love this 😭😍🙏🏾😍😍😍😍😍
Brilliant!
A Young Lea Michele! OMG. She was so cute
How different it was a little more than a hundred years ago.
it was the music of something beginning
an era exploding, a century spinning
in riches and rags and in rhythm and rhyme,
the people called it ragtime, ragtime!
so brilliant
Look at little Lea Michele from Glee in one of her first roles on Broadway!!!
@iou50bucks I believe the woman stretching the C6 at the end is the woman holding the baby....although I'm sure Marin can sing a C6 too. She was classically trained, and a C6 is easily stretched for Sopranos. I don't know what her fach is, sing I haven't heard her sing opera, but for musical theatre, she is definitely a Soprano, although she does sing a lot of Mezzo songs too.
the ending is great!
LOVE LOVE LOVE❤️
so precise! i love it!

ugh this makes me CRY!
@G4Rat
I am such a huge Audra fan. So sorry I missed seeing this the first time around, but I did see her first show which was Carousel when I was 6 and loved her ever since! I think she defies the word "angel."
3:47 oh my goodness! little lea michele!! this was actually a pretty good show.
I miss Rosie!!!!!!!!
She was also in the 2004 revival of Fiddler.
woow lea is there!!!
take another bow...take another bow!...TAKE ANOTHER BOW!!!!!!!!!!!
jeez rosie...
Is that little immigrant girl the girl from Glee?
+MIS315 Yes
LEA MICHELE!
I saw this with the original cast when it first came out. The **ONLY** reason it did not when Best Musical was because it had the unfortunate luck to debut in the same year as "The Lion King".
Angel H should have won! What BS!
@iou50bucks Yes, I've heard her! She's absolutely fabulous! She and Bernadette are my two favourites.
i thought that was lea! she's so fortunate to have performed with Audra...who won 4 tonys nd one for this role! omg
They need to make this into a movie. The cast is too large to sustain long and a movie format would work better. Please, PLEASE!!!!
thepurlfisher You should try to see it in person, whenever it plays. It's wonderful, as is, on stage.
They did make a movie.
The movie came first
Im learning this song right now in My choir in 2013
We're playing this song in our Marching Band... without the lyrics :P
LOOK LOOK...Lea Michelle!!
I love how Peter Friedmans voice stands out
They're reviving Ragtime? Yeah!
I'm gonna see the very third preview of the revival!
Lea Michele as the daughter, people!
Those cheek bones are inevitable to recognize!
@estiebubs Lol yeah I believe she was in the OBC and touring cast.
Fiorillo
@sidekickstupidco do u mean the Lea from Glee? If so she is the little jewish girl in the front.
I don't believe that person was comparing this to rap. He/she was comparing it to other musicals.
Is the girl at 3:47 Lea Michelle??
does anyone have more parts of this musical with the OBC??
Who else was here for Lea?
Audra McDonald played Sarah
lea mitchell from glee was the little immigrant girl wow
was that Lea Michele from GLEE
And I don't wanna sound stupi, but who is Audra that everyone is commenting about?
Man, the sound mix on this was terrible. Kinda took me out of it.
Still though- one of the great productions in history.
ZestyItalian2 and greatest original cast in history!
Gosh that little boy at the end just tries to open his mouth as wide as possible!! Why??
@pete8619 Yes it is
m m m m...brian stokes mitchell...that voice!
audra :)
rachel berry!
@iRebekah31 I agree....I hear Marin and Audra over everyone else....except for the C6 sung by one of the immigrant women at the end of the song.
Audra McDonald.
@iou50bucks that's Audra
I beg to differ! In an age when "rap" is considered music, it doesn't get better than this. By the way, what do you consider first rate?
Who played the Little Boy?
Alex Strange
What he’s up to now. He’s a mixologist and hasn’t done broadway since Ragtime dc.eater.com/2011/10/4/6646479/shab-row-bistro-mixologist-alex-strange-shares-his-ink-and-his
Look its Data....I mean Brent Spiner.
as annoying and irritating as rosie o'donnell is i must admit i really loved her she show! she was a huge supporter of broadway musicals.
