  • This is a quick comparison of the first level of Rayman 2 on PS1 and N64 (with Expansion Pak).
For the optimal watching experience I always recommend watching with cinema window size and using the browser add-on "turn off the lights", availbable for Chrome, Firefox and Opera! www.stefanvd.net/project/turno...
The PS1 offers full voice acting while the N64 comes with the Raymanian "gibberish" (which I really like, it simply suits). The PS1 offers, depending on the scene, slightly up to much better textures and a cleaner look of the given scene. The lack of Z-buffer, though, result in some clipping issues and some wabbling textures that is typical for PS1 games. The framerate is also more stable than on N64 (even without high res textures there some heavy slow downs on the N64). The N64 on the other hand offers visibly more polygons (look at Rayman's body, his hands, feet and other creatures of the Rayman universe). Some effects "seem" to be better and more appealing like water. But that could also be up to personal taste.
The PS1 offers less content, though. There are only 800 yellow lums instead of 1,000 and many levels are significantly shortened. Some levels are missing entirely. They did improve the handling while Rayman is sliding, though, that is far more responsive now.
Synopsis: Rayman 2 is a great experience on both plattforms. But I'd give the N64 the edge over the PS1 version. I even recommend to play both, if you have both systems and if you are a die-hard Rayman fan like me.

PS1 because the N64 uses a MIDI soundtrack but N64 because it has better graphics than the PS1 version if you have an expansion pack.

Unfortunately they cut almost every level so you have less content. But since it's almost like a new experience due to the changes they made it's definitely worth to play, too.
