Songwriter and producer Scott Storch is no stranger to success. After being drafted into hip-hop band the Roots in 1994 upon moving to Philadelphia, the group’s first album Organix leaned heavily on Storch’s distinctive use of the Fender Rhodes and would help define their sound.
Hip-hop producer and pianist Scott Storch discussed his career and the stories behind hits for Dr. Dre, Fat Joe, The Roots and many others during his public lecture at Red Bull Music Festival Toronto 2018.

at 1:20 scott said he didnt like his family gathers and the interviewer didnt ask why. He skipped right over an obvious question. That tells me he dont ask obvious questions and he is not a good interviewer. This guy CANNOT INTERVIEW. Hes skipping over a million obvious questions to ask. THIS INTERVIEWER MAKES THIS INTERVIEW SLAW

I like scott storch but hate the interviewer thats why I gave it thumbs down cause the interviewer didnt ask ALOT of obvious questions for instance. He asked scott storch how he met Dr Dre. Scoot said he waited in the lobby for 2 hours and didnt have any material on him...just his fingers. The interviewer never asked how did he prove to Dr Dre he could play piano. did he take him to the studio immediately or what??? NO REAL OBVIOUS QUESTIONS Are being asked

Storch is a next level musical wizard. The beats back in the 90s and 2000s were so diverse and creative. Different tempos, swing, middle eastern vibes, world music influence, oldschool soul influence, different sounds (synthetic and organic), samples, so many different ways of thinking. The moment the 2010s hit, it’s like everybody and their mom decided to declare in unison: “Ok…we’re all going to make the same beat now, we’re all going to use the same sounds and cicada hi-hat pattern, and we’re going to make this beat over and over and over and over again, year after year after year for eternity.” Even though hip hop is still probably the most commercially popular genre, it’s artistically dead right now. Trap beats were cool the first year they were popular. Now….like 12 years later, it’s gotten beyond lame. They got trap beats in tampon commercials at this point. Listen to Storch’s last bit of advice. He’s literally telling people to break new ground and be a pioneer, not copy what’s popular.

Dillon Revell® they don't want to pay royalties/take copyright hits for playing music... sucks because it really defeats the purpose of these videos. Especially when you have an actual musician playing for the audience.

One of the problems today is that a lot of these "producers" are really just beatmakers who are chasing a check. They lust after money, women and the lifestyle a hit record brings. They don't lust after the music. Scott loves music. He's a real producer - not a beatmaker. He's a true musician who has literally sacrificed his life for his love of the art. I saw him in an interview one time saying that when he dropped out of high school to pursue music, that if he didn't become successful, he would at least be a happy poor guy playing piano in a bar. That speaks volumes on the kind of guy he is. He's built different, to put it in Gen Z slang for you youngsters.
