I’ve been working for a landscaping company and we never use weed barrier unless the customer really insists. Waste of time and money. The seeds will still lodge in between the stone and grow. I see it every day. Get a good pre-emergent herbicide and put that on the rocks. If you don’t like chemicals then just stay vigilant about pulling the weeds out when they’re young. They usually pop right out. Great job again as usual.

Here’s two cents to throw in the conversation.
I owned a landscape company for over 31 years and I wouldn’t put rock down without fabric.
Now, we are in zone 5 where there is a lot of freeze/thaw cycles that actually cause the soil to “ swallow up “ the rock which creates a really big dirt-rock mess.
To your point, we don’t put fabric under wood mulch.

I bought a geo-grid product for a large patio area we were building. I had the the same problem. On our install we were able to rectify it my using 57 stone as the first layer and #8 for the finish layer. Smaller stone that covered everything. Wish I’d have seen a video like yours before we started. It would have saved 2-3 days. Nice project.
Oh and you will have weeds no matter what you did. 😅

agree on the weeds haha. I went weed fabric crazy like many new landscapers / gardeners. it does end up failing. especially if pouring crushed rock with sharp edges right on top. the other issue is that the rocks on the surface slowly collect dust etc. and then the weeds grow on top of the landscape barrier. in the end it does seem to be true that all you really do is spend a bit of extra money and make a bit of extra work when you need to remove the fabric pieces one day. other landscapers have pointed out the eventual removal can also negatively affect the root systems of nice perennials (after you've spent years growing them into a nice mature plant). if your yard has a lot of weeds with deep tap roots that can regenerate, then maybe just give it a good spray with 10% vinegar or store bought weed killer before you put down the rock.

Since we are not afraid of labor, or an intense time crunch on this channel, I have a friend who used a compactor, then laid about 2 inches of concrete and covered a large driveway area. (about 12000sq ft). He then covered the concrete with 2 or 3 inches of gravel. When I visit, I am always amazed at how few weeds he has to deal with, even after 22 years of use it still looks like new. The few weeds that come up are simply burned off with a tourch.

OMG...It came out gorgeous. I'm actually planning to landscape my front yard in September and have been binging these kind of videos. Lots of mixed opinions on landscaping fabric. Some swear it makes weeds and all undergrowth worse, others claim a thicker more commercial grade of fabric is needed. I will probably go with commercial grade fabric, even though it costs more $. Your channel is one of my favorite finds of the year. Promptly subscribed. ❤

Even if you put down weed barrier you will probably get weeds, but your rock is pretty think so they won’t root all that well and be easy to pull out. I am out in California and I put weed barrier down with about 2 inches of rock in one area and three inches of mulch in another and still get weeds but as I said they pull pretty easy. Your landscape area looks great.

  • @JustinJ.
    @JustinJ. 5 месяцев назад

For the weed control, get yourself a pre-emergent spray to suppress seeds from germinating, it usually lasts around 4-6 months before needing to be re-applied, any good garden center should be able to provide you with some

  • @redscortgt93

I think it looks great. The weed barrier is less of a concern for me, although a good idea. In my experience when you mow, whatever is thrown into that area is more likely to seed and sprout growth of grass or weeds, etc. Maybe a good weed and grass killer is available that’s eco friendly and actually works? Keep up the great work. I can’t wait to see how it turns out. :)

I don’t like weed barrier, having used it once before. Weeds will still grow as soil / rotting mulch covers it, giving the weed seeds what they need to sprout. I just put Roundup in a tank sprayer, and spray every few weeks.

  • @bruce-le-smith

looks great! I think the geotex grid is probably unnecessary for foot traffic, even though it seems fun. I hear you about the frost heaving, I grew up in the mid-west near you, the land of constant potholes haha. We're in a very different part of the country now but have almost pure clay soil that moves quite a bit in heavy rains. I've found the rough crushed rock does a pretty good job of clinging to itself and to the soft materials underneath. If you're looking for plain language deeper dives check out Grady's Practical Engineering channel, they provide really good info on geotechnical topics! That geotex actually looks pretty great for hiding under a patch of grass in the front yard, maybe with 1" of 1/4" crushed granite in the bottom and then a sand and topsoil mix on top to hide the grid. That way you could park a car or van on the lawn if you wanted (e.g. to wash it, so you're getting two uses out of clean city water and aren't just dumping it straight down the drain). Or, similarly, you could cut grid into 3-4' slices and make a structurally sound 'hidden pathway' from the front to back, so you could drive a little excavator along it in wet weather.

It may not be a problem in your area, but in where I live, you have to have an edging that is at least 6" below the soil line and 4" above to keep the Bermuda grass from spreading into the area.

Curious why you leveled the ground if you used the large landscaping rocks. I have done a few projects around the house and only leveled when I use pavers because they are large flat stones. The rough white rock you use will obviously not be level so just curious why you spent that time. Looks beautiful though.

I use the weed barrier purely to keep the gravel separate from soil for ease of removal in the future. The geo grid is good for smaller gravel and areas of high traffic. I used it at the corner of our house. As our dog sprints around the corner, he wears out a ditch from kicking out the material. Otherwise, no need for it. What I found with the white rocks, is a challenge to make sure they stay white. They will stain over time, but the Easihold might help here. In your video you did not show whether you have compacted the granite. This is the layer that forms your base and ideal for leveling, not that this is that significant when covered with rocks. You will also find the plastic barrier between the grass and the rocks will become a nuisance over time. Best is to lay out a row of pavers.

I think a more stable edge barrier would have been better as this is likely to bend and buckle as you hit it with the mower. I went for a stone block edging the same height as the lawn so I could just push the mower over the top. I had my stones set into a 2 inch high cement bedding to stop them moving around.
I also went for a 45cm white stone bedding around my house and did put a weed barrier in. However now 10 years later weeds are there because leaves and stuff lands in the gaps between the stones and have created an amount of earth. Also the stones have all discoloured and I wish I has used something darker.

Eventually weeds would have grown above the weed barrier. The base material, everyday sand and dirt, and occasional lawn clipping will find their way in. The weeds will grown in that stuff.
Better off getting a weed torch. It attaches to a propane tank and you walk around burning the weeds.
