Pete's Dragon - The Happiest Home in These Hills

  • As we all know that the remake to this movie is coming out this August, except it's not gonna show the original characters from the original movie, and will not be a musical. The only two characters are just Pete and Elliot. Here's a video from the 1977 movie, the Happiest Home in These Hills, the entire song, one of my favorite songs along with Boo Bop Bopbop Bop (I Love You, Too), Candle on the Water, and Bill of Sale, I wish that at least two songs feature in the end credits of the movie played by current artists.

I think The Gogans are one of Disney's most underrated villains.
They bought a young kid just to force and abuse him to work on their farm, and they sung this song to make it sound like it's a nice place to live with them when it's really not. Not to mention that they look creepy as hell at night.
Damn, the actors did an amazing job and nailed their roles, especially Shelley Winters.
Edit: Had to fix some grammar errors, sorry.

    Let's sing it together!
    He's gone that-a-way
    He's went this-a-way
    He's up a tree I think
    Oh Petey, oh Petey
    Where are you?
    Please come back
    Oh Petey, oh Petey
You're like a son to us
We miss you; we miss you
If I get near him you can bet I won't miss him with this
I'll cook you cake and gingerbread
Bring you tea in bed on a tray
We'll slave while you go fishing
You'll get permission to run and play
These tears oughta show you I care
Come back, by cracky we'll share
The happiest home in these hills, in these hills
Gonna snag him, gag him, drag him through town
Put his head in the river, let the pup drown
Trap him, strap him, wrap him in a sack, yeah
Tie him screaming to a railroad track
We'll have you sing in chapel
You'll be the apple of momma's eye
I'll tend to all your sewing and do your mowing
    So just rely on me
Dang, we know you're out there
It's late, we're waiting to share
The happiest home in these hills, in these hills
Gonna paw him, claw him, saw him in half
When he cries out for mercy we'll just laugh
Beat him, heat him, eat him for dessert, yeah
Roast him gently so the flames won't hurt
You'll swim and you'll go camping
You'll be a champ in your own backyard
Our love is overflowing, it keeps on growing
You'll sleep good knowing you're home in these hills
We're gonna string him from a tree
    In these hills
We're gonna sting him like a bee
    In these hills
We're gonna spill him on his head
    In these hills
We're gonna fill him full of lead
    In these hills

I remember feeling the same thing when I watched it in my youth (3-6 yo probably)and after seeing this a couple times recently I realized it was because I knew they were evil as a kid (obviously with the way theyre presented and the lyrics of how they were going to hurt Pete) but one of the things that jumped out at me was when they sing the line "the happiest home in these hills..." and some subsequent verses they talk about all the good things theyre going to do for Pete and my young mind didn't understand that they were lying....half the time they wanted to do good things and half the time they wanted to hurt Pete and I didn't get it. My heart sank when I recently saw this again for the first time when they sing the "happiest home" line because at a young age I knew something wasn't right there but at that age I didn't have any experience to tell me what was going on. That was especially evil to me as a kid.

These lyrics are actually really good. Some of the rhymes are top notch, the song flows really well, memorable and catchy (I hadn't seen this for ~18-20 years and remembered it all perfectly) and funny. There's several songs from this movie that are true earworms and I think it's a shockingly underrated musical. It would make an AWESOME live show, you could do some really creative things with invisible Elliott and the I Saw A Dragon scene would be incredible on stage.
Unfortunately, Disney made a sub-par remake to cash in on nostalgia rather than treating their property and fans with respect..

Man, this is such a nostalgic smile. I remember seeing this twice in early grammar school. Once was a total surprise. They called an assembly in the gym and it was always good news when you walked into a projector on a cart and a movie screen. I remember this scene well, watching it stretched out on the wood floor of the gymnasium. Those heavy drapes drawn over the windows and the sound of that mono speaker in the projector. Good times and a great little movie.

+LL Armstrong Slavery was illegal, but there were no laws protecting kids from abuse. If they were part of your family (I.E. Adopted) or worked for you, you could treat them however you wanted. They were expected to work, and physical punishment was perfectly acceptable. Look up how kids were treated in factories. This film is actually pretty dang mild compared to the horrible truth of how kids were treated at the time.

My youngest son was watching the remake which is so wholesome by comparison. I recalled how terrified I was of the original version as a child - how dirty and deranged these people were, popping out of the woods with glee and menace. Mission accomplished by all these actors and especially Shelley Winters and the hair and makeup folks who understood the primary purpose of these characters was to scare the fuck out of any kid watching.

They both have a different kind of magic where this one is like he finds an amazing family and the other one is more they discover a new creature. I love both the movies but this one definitely has the music ❤️
