How to FAKE LINE ART in Procreate

  • Here’s a line art trick that I’ve used in almost all of my illustrations that have taken a lot of time. It’s one way to reduce the amount of hours that it has taken to create these artworks.
    I wanted to create a separate quick tutorial for this so that people wouldn’t have to comb through one of my longer process videos to find this information.
    Let me know if you’d like to see that line thinning tutorial. It’s a bit more complicated way to editing masking selections.

    Thank you for taking the time to make this! I had asked about this technique when I saw you do it quickly in the Zero Hour video. This will save me so much time! I almost always avoid doing line art because I’m so lazy haha. Thanks again! 💙
    Ps love love LOOOOVE your watercolor brushes right now. I was taught to paint with watercolor at a young age and it’s been so much fun to play around with it digitally. Your brush making needs more attention because they are so beautifully made it’s like paint art with art.

    I do this a lot to make sticker outlines. But for me, after I do the guassian blur, I auto select the area around the blurred object with 0% threshold, then I invert, then I fill the selection with the same color. That way the line isn't blurred at all, it's nice and crisp.

    • @angrymikko

      This works for single objects but auto selection isn’t great at jumping from one colour pool to the next even if it’s on the same layer so I wouldn’t trust it to handle complex unconnected line art shapes.

      @@east_coastt It's the 'Automatic' selection in Proceate. When you go to selection and tap to select an object in "Automatic" mode. Best for selecting 1 color/closed area or after finishing something like a sticker.

    Select your layer
    Inthe palette menu, use "select"
    Use the Feahter tool to expand the selection
    Create a new layer
    Use the Fill layer option in the palette menu
    Selet the original art again
    go to your new layer and use clear
    Done

    This is a great technique that I use myself. You can harden up the lines and shrink them as well by selecting inverse and deleting. This combined with your technique can help you finesse the line weight and hardness a little more.

      On basically any software that has layer effect, though, it can be done with a single button click (to turn on either "outline" or "outer glow"). Procreate is like one of those apps that are both claimed to be pro enough yet not providing layer effect.

      It’s basically the next level of crazy after this technique. I’ve done it a few times in my livestreams but honestly I’ve never been explaining it while I go through the steps because it can be kind of a brain twister.
      Both of these techniques are great for opening the creative possibilities with masking and selections.
      Once you have the basics down it’s possible to adjust these methods to whatever it is you’re trying to achieve through masks and selections. All of my graphic illustrations are basically just variations on those masking tricks.

    • @FlameRat_YehLon
      @FlameRat_YehLon 3 года назад +1

      Not sure if it's possible on Procreate but you basically have to erode the line art. Maybe gaussian blur then adjust brightness curve would work. But of course that leaves really weird looking crosses.
      So alternatively you might try just use an auto vector tracer to convert the whole thing, then adjust line width there. Not sure if there's actually any auto tracer that converts lines to lines rather than filled shapes, though.
      Or you might as well just trace the whole thing yourself, which is the "correct" way to do it. And next time you might choose to draw on a vector program before colouring instead.

      Most of the content on this channel is about art videos and tutorials. This is not an art tutorial. Learning to use an app has nothing to do with learning to paint. However this is a useful workaround to using this app until it (hopefully) gets updated so that this video becomes obsolete.

      The thing with touch screens is that it makes some buttons unnecessary because of gesture controls but I understand that some of those gestures can take a second to learn. In the bigger picture though. All apps are easy it’s art that will always be hard but that’s what makes it exciting too.

      This technique is only useful in very specific situations as outlined (ahem) in the beginning of the video. But when it’s a good fit it can really save time and energy.

    I wish procreate had a better way of outlining selected areas. This trick works but the lines get pretty deep fried, which is fine for small details but can get noticeable on larger ones. In paint tool sai I remember there being a feature where you could do something along the lines of expanding your selection outwards by 1 pixel in every direction, so you could select the plant, expand the selection by a few pixels, fill that on a layer underneath and bam easy outline.

    You can actually do this on Clip Studio Paint.
    The Guassian blur is in the filter tab on top.
    For erasing/isolating the space around the lineart after you merged the layers multiple time you jist need to use the magic selection tool (it's a magic wand. Dk the proper name) and the select the area outside of the lineart. Then just press delete onyour keyboard. It will erase everything in the selcted era.
    Sorry if it's unclear.

      There’s a stroke function like in Photoshop so I would just use that instead if you’re working with CSP. The filled shape is needed for erasing and colours so I’d keep them for the same reasons no matter what program you’re using.

    This is cool and tysm BUT hear me out why not just open ibis and click extract lineart?

    • @angrymikko
      @angrymikko  3 года назад +1

      I’ll assume that you didn’t watch this video because that function in Ibis only solves the easiest part of the three problems that this technique is useful for.
      Extract lineart in Ibis is handy for sure but even if it was a feature in procreate it wouldn’t speed up the workflow regarding the problem this technique is solving.
      Doing the cut takes the least amount of time compared to erasing the overlaps or making a selection mask for painting later.
      Also to state the obvious; this is a procreate trick. Like mentioned in this video you could also say that using stroke in photoshop does the same thing as all of these steps but that’s not really helpful for people using this app. It wouldn’t even be useful for photoshop users since layer styles aren’t on the iOS version yet.

      @@angrymikko fair point. Didn't mean to disrespect your effort tho. Actually now that I learned this I'll be using it myself - so thank you a lot, my comment was more of a joke and I had no clue you'd actually read it

    I have a question, when I go to the layer where I have to "select it". I don't get the crossing hatching lines and it turns everything black. Not sure why. :(

      Could you point out the time in the video so I might be able to understand the situation a bit better. I can’t guarantee that I’ll be able to help but I can try :)

      @@angrymikko It's was at 4:28. When I tried to do it, it wasn't selecting anything. Thanks for the help, I found out what I did wrong after like 20 mins of fooling around with it. It appears I had the fill tool selected as well. So instead of going around the selection, it was filling it in with another colour. I appreciate the help. :)

      I’m glad you figured it out. I honestly wouldn’t have been able to guess what the issue was without actually seeing your screen in that case. There’s a very thin context sensitive bar that appears in the top of the screen when working with tools that use the slide feature. It’s kinda hard to notice because it’s so small but it also says which tool you are currently using if you find yourself getting unexpected results from doing the sliding action.

    Procreate, but I can do this in CSP also~ thank you!

    • @angrymikko

      CSP has a layer stroke that you can use to skip the layer expansion phase completely. Just make sure you use the antialiased version or the stroke will have jagged edges.

    Does ProCreate not have expand/contract for selections?

      I made a workaround tutorial for that after this video. Hopefully it will be obsolete someday.

    Wait why not just make the layer underneath slightly bigger instead of use the Gaussian blur thing? Or am I missing something?

    • @angrymikko
      @angrymikko  3 года назад

      That would only work with a geometric symmetrical shape and that would be faster to draw with your normal line art brush anyway. This method is only useful for complex shapes that can’t be easily selected nor traced by other means.

    Instead of a new layer with clipping mask, you can just alpha lock your layer and fill it.

    • @angrymikko
      @angrymikko  3 года назад +1

      That is sometimes an option but fill thresholds can sometimes leave elements unfilled especially if they are not physically connected. That’s why I described the clipping mask because it works with any kind of layer below it. Those leaves btw aren’t all connected so a fill on the same layer would miss the unconnected leaf bits. In a complicated element those can be easy to miss sometimes so I use the clipping mask as an additional safety net to avoid reworking stuff I might have missed.
