  • Have clubs been more 'accepting' of their fate this season? There has not been a Premier League manager sacking since the 2023/24 campaign started, compared to last year where five managers had been sacked by the end of November.
The Athletic's journalists Dom Fifield, Jay Harris and Duncan Alexander join host Ayo Akinwolere to discuss the bottom half of the table and what could happen to coaches as their teams get closer to relegation.

I think it's a good thing. Championship and lower half prem teams have to start thinking differently if they're going to stay in the Prem or move up the table. The first thing that happens when you sack a manager is a change of personnel. They want to put their own stamp on the team and want a transfer budget. I feel like it's already to late at that point. Yes, managers come in and save teams. How? It's not normally by playing expansive attractive football, it normally by conceding less goals and becoming hard to beat. The directors of football at these clubs need to decide (with their boards and owners) how they want their team to play and they then need to interview and find a management and coaching team that fits that style. The scouts need to understand the types of players that fit into the style. Too often a manager arrives and wants to do things their way, it just doesn't work unless you have infinite money or the entire club pulling in the same direction. Brighton have shown that this approach not only works but can be very profitable. The only barriers to other clubs doing similar is 1. Time and 2. Club ownership and high level management.

You just drew my attention with the question. Haven't thought about it all season.
Maybe club owners and board have decided to be a little bit patient and use the Ferguson approach.

Last season, especially across Europe the firings were happening regularly. But in England the firings didn’t ramp up until February.
Might be the same again, bottom 3 can’t do better than what they can. Generally everyone is where they should be in the league.

    1. Probs can't monetarily afford to sack hecky.
    2. We have 13 injuries
    3. Not many other managers can foster our style.
    4. We were struggling financially and now we are stable, were just using this as a balancing season
Bad thing for hecky is it can't really get any worse so maybe worth getting rid

I'm sure Heckingbottom will be sacked, though it's difficult to see how the owners would instigate a managerial cultural change mid-season. I don't think the likes of Jesse Marsch or Ralph Hasenhuttl would want to work with this Sheffield squad, or would think it's a suitable project for their respective styles of play. The best they can hope for is Chris Wilder or Dean Smith bringing a bus full of good vibes.

I dont disagree with you that all them clubs you mention are going down pal but what I disagree with is your word accepting? 🤣 I dont think any football club should be accepting of it never mind all three of them they have to change the narrative ie hire a new manager the owners of them three clubs if they think they are going down now imo I mean I aint saying it guarantees anything but surely they have to try something surely right🤔 I mean I think its bad for the league in general if one promoted club cant compete never mind all of them🤔
