Rusty Cage, Jesus Christ Pose and Outshined. Badmotorfinger are such an epic album. Their breakthrough. Actually released two albums before this one. Ultramega OK and Louder Than Love
If you want to check out a little different Chris Cornell then check out Part of Me (Explicit) produced by Timbaland and the 007 title track You Know My Name
I love Kim Thayil's guitar work on this song. You guys need to check out "Holy Water" from this album (Badmotorfinger, and that is the cover you were looking at,which was done by Mark Dancey of Big Chief, another great band to check) and also "Mailman" from Superunknown.
Perfect way to kick off my day! Chris is my GOAT. Gotta love Kim Thayil’s guitar work. Please check out “Only Love Can Save Me Now” by The Pretty Reckless. It features Kim Thayil and Matt Cameron (the drummer) from Soundgarden. It has that Soundgarden sound because of them. Plus it’s a good song.
*THANK YOU SO MUCH! "That name is God level!"! Thank you. I've been requesting this song bc I knew you'd appreciate his range! I'm so happy! Thank you! I LOVE CHRIS! 💚*
My best friend owns a music school for voice and piano. We were about 20 years old when this album hit. I remember him saying, "I always wanted to sing like Robert Plant until I heard Slaves and Bulldozers."
This is one of my favorite Soundgarden songs. A great one to hear live. Slaves and Bulldozers doesn't mean anything. According to the band, they got the name from a little boy. He was playing a game, in which he was pushing a toy truck around and making everyone move out of his way. When asked what he was playing, "Slaves and Bulldozers" was his answer.
@@lt6245 I've often thought it was about the industry (bulldozers) and the fans (slaves). And I think he didn't say the second part because he didn't want to hurt their feelings.
I saw Soundgarden back with their first album Louder than Love. He's the most powerful singer that I've ever seen, it almost blew your hair back. You could hear him above the PA and the band. He was just a savage when he belted.
I heard him talking one time about this very thing haha. He said that in the early days, their rehearsal space was so tiny that he had to sing extra loud to be heard over the instruments 😊
Excellent choice. This is my favorite Soundgarden song. Badmotorfinger is just a legendary album. I personally enjoy it more than Superunknown even though I love that album too
Need to react to “Gun” by Soundgarden or “Head down” I got to meet Chris Cornell many years back on there first CD Loud Love and on stage Chris was a mad man lol but when I met him he seemed so innocent and was a very kind man
IMO, this was always the best song to showcase Cornell's overall singing prowess. There are other options, of course (Far Beyond the Wheel, and Say Hello to Heaven come to mind), but this song just checks all the boxes (and is just a 90s grunge masterpiece to boot) RIP Chris Cornell.
The compressed letters in the center logo are 'BadMotorFinger', the name of the album. Despite the heaviness of this album, I believe it show-cased how much of a poet lyricist Cornell was, a trend that continued as they softened their sound for later albums. 'Rusty cage', 'Outshined', and 'Jesus Christ Pose' are great examples of this. 'Face Pollution' is a frenetic piece that shows their punk side, 'Somewhere' a preview of later songs. 'Room a Thousand Years wide' is incredible, while 'Drawing Flies' is almost whimsical, in the darkest way possible. This is an amazing album that really shows you the power of Cornell's voice, and the song writing ability of the band.
This is in my top five Soundgarden songs. Jesus Christ Pose is another on this album that is soo good. Rusty Cage is still my very favorite. Chris Cornell had such range. Between him and Layne Staley I give the edge to Chris.
Badmotorfinger is their 3rd album, released in 91. For me at least, this is the album that put the Seattle scene on the national map even though Sub Pop Records started in the late 80s. I believe Soundgarden was signed to A & M at this point...Anyways check out _Jesus Christ Pose, Rusty Cage, Outshine, and Searching With My Good Eye Closed_ from the same album. This album is so heavy, everyone slays and Cornell is an absolute beast vocally!!
🦋 Tool, Candlebox & Soundgarden are top on my list of favorites. Great Reaction Guys! Love This Song. Looking Forward To More Soundgarden Reactions in the Coming Future.
Having seen Soundgarden live a bunch of times, this song always killed at the end of the show. This song is so heavy while also being melodic at the same time. Cool thing they would do is after they finished the song is end the show with massive distortion. A pretty cool way to end the show.
I saw them in Tuscaloosa just before (you know) and was in the pit. This was the closing (with the distortion at the end). Two hours later as I was going to sleep, I could still feel the music reverberating….. THAT is the power of good music!
STILL the the GREATEST ALBUM ever came from Seattle : SOUNDGARDEN/BADMOTORFINGER.I saw them Live on that Tour.....STILL one of my Top Ten Concerts EVER !!!!
Not sure what Soundgarden songs you've checked out. But you need to check out Superunknown. Either that cut or the album. When Chris went into the screams, you can definitely see the influence for Chester. Both are very much missed, but the songs live on.
All I do know is the origin of the name of the song. Either the band or just a member of the band came across some kids playing outside and they asked what they were playing. One of the kids answered; SLAVES AND BULLDOZERS. I have been a fan of Soundgarden since the late 80's. I luckily lived in Seattle as well as worked within the music industry. I saw Soundgarden play in little clubs. I also saw some of AICs first shows along with Mother Love Bone. Now there's a band you should do a couple shows on. Mother Love Bone. Andrew Wood and Chris Cornell shared a house. Andrew was a heroin addict and died of an overdose from some bad dope being sold on the streets. Temple of the Dog was formed in tribute, released an album. Eddie Vedder was introduced to the band and added vocals. First, Mookie Blaylock was formed featuring Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard from MLB, Mike McCready and Eddie as frontman. I saw them perform as Mookie at the Mural Amphitheatre for the weekly Pain in the Grass concerts. BTW, you can find that show on RUclips. They then changed the band name to Pearl Jam. The rest is History. I digress. Check out Mother Love Bone and the charismatic Andrew Wood. They released 2 Albums and an EP I believe. Andrew inspired some Great Music and was an amazing performer. Thanks Guys. I Love your show.
It's all down to preference when it comes to Layne and Chris. Chris' voice is like a sharp knife cutting into your soul. Layne's voice is like a brick wall coming at you at full force. While I prefer Layne, there's no denying they both have one of the greatest voices in rock (hell, even music) history.
Thanks for doing my favorite SoundGarden song. Also last song they did in concert when I seen them in Charlotte a week and a half before Chris' untimely passing.
Best Soundgarden song ever. One of the greatest songs ever priod. Chris Cornell has got the greatest vocal capabilities a singer can ask for. Range, pitch, depth. He makes you feel this song in your core. With that being said, Layne makes you feel EVERY song he sings in your core. With every fiber of your being. Two gifted but lost souls gone too soon. They will never be duplicated.
Anything off of Badmotorfinger is just gold! One of the greatest rock albums of the 90's, and easily one of the holy grails of the Seattle movement! Personal favourites from this album are Room A Thousand Miles Wide, Jesus Christ Pose, and Outshined :)
Solid. Had the pleasure of seeing Soundgarden back in the day, when they were playing side stages at festivals. Then meeting Chris at a Audioslave show. His voice is absolutely singular. RIP brother.
The title " Slaves and Bulldozers" was explained as "Slaves" are the musicians and " Bulldozers" are the record companys. The musicians are slaves to the record companys who are Bulldozers tearing everything down
Amazing memories brought back by this track, seeing them live at QMU (within the same few months as Nirvana, Mudhoney, Dinosaur Jr at the same venue), playing the album (which I'd gone to OurPrice to buy the CD). Great times, mad to think it was 30 years ago.
Both Layne and Chris were amazing vocalists, but IMO Staley's ability to go heavy with a certain smoothness edges out Cornell's tendency to shriek/scream (even though he usually retains note quality)...crazy that they both came out of Seattle at the same time
Chris had a higher range in the upper register and was a more diverse singer. His songs were harder to pull off than Layne's songs. The song, Beyond the Wheel is harder to pull off than any of AIC, songs

This song and "Fourth of July" by Soundgarden are best described as marching uphill in wet concrete boots. Just a sludgy metal masterpiece.
Mailman too imo
Fresh Tendrils too, an underrated gem from Superunknown. Classic grunge with an odd time signature.
Another good one is Limo Wreck

Chris' voice is always the perfect combination of silky smooth and rough as gravel. This is one of the best songs on the album.
Couldn’t agree more
He used to eat a handful of silk and 2 hand fulls of granite every day :)
Agreed!!
They're all one of the best songs on the album!
If you want to hear Chris Cornell's range, listen to Beyond the Wheel, the live version from Germany in 1990. It will blow your mind.
Hearing him sing it at 52, still belting out those notes, will also blow their minds 😊
Also Smokestack Lightning
