I remember forcing my guitar-teacher friend to sit down and listen to SG back in '93 or so. A week later, he said "I always wanted to sing like Plant, but now it's Cornell."
I bet Judson would really like Chris Cornell’s first solo album “Euphoria Mourning”. I’d love to see a reaction to “When I’m Down” or “Preaching the End of the World” off that album.
I agree it had a more folk rock feel
100%, that live version of When I'm Down at the Troubadour with just him and the piano is one of the best live performances I've ever seen
Or 'Seasons' from the Singles soundtrack - so goooood
Great album, hope you could do a reaction to it, even "can't change me" which was the most popular song is a great track.
👿🔱😈..I didnt know Chris did a solo album
So cool to see a reaction to this extreme Soundgarden song. Chris's vocals are epic. That solo is nuts. And yes, SG's Matt Cameron is the drummer for Pearl Jam. He's excellent.
Temple of the Dog' s drummer as well
AIC and Soundgarden are the best two bands from the grunge era.
Chris Cornell is my favorite vocalist...Ever!! More Soundgarden please!
Badmotorfinger is Soundgarden's best album.
THIS I think he'll like.
Damn, great pick Richard,
Hands down. Badmotorfinger is the definition the 'Seattle sound'
Not only Soundgarden's best album; I'll go as far as saying, it's the best grunge album ever made.. .
The exceptional expert here on this channel should analyze and react to one song (the studio version) with the absurd vocals of the extraterrestrial Chris Cornell, song by Soundgarden: "Jesus Christ Pose"... The classical music specialist would be ecstatic, amazed, extremely impressed by the unforgettable, sacred, immortal Chris Cornell...
Badmotorfinger is one of the best albums in music history. Fact.
I cried when he died. Sometimes hurts to listen to him.
Me too
This dude looks 25 and 65 at the same time. So it makes sense he is in his 40s.
Matt Cameron was indeed Soundgarden’s drummer. Try Let Me Drown off Superunknown.
Thanks for the reaction!
Keep ‘em comin’!
Recommendation- QOTSA
“I Appear Missing” either extended version (studio) or Live 4K
One of the most underrated metal albums imo!
The best Soundgarden song...
Matt Cameron was the drummer for Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, 'and' Pearl Jam. Man's a legend. Anyone would be stupid to pass him up if given the opportunity to have him.
And drummed for M.A.C.C. (McCready, Ament, Cameron, Cornell) when they did the Hendrix tribute (Hey Baby, Land of the Rising Sun)
Anything off Badmotorfinger is worth checking out. Matt Cameron is one of the most creative and interesting drummers from that era.
Soundgarden came before Temple of the Dog came before Pearl Jam.
Glad you opened your mind on Soundgarden, you haven't heard much but the hits before, fun things to discover ahead.
please play Limo Wreck next time by the mighty Soundgarden.
Oh, yeah! Limo Wreck is a great song!
Of course this would be Kim Thayil's favorite solo - it's about the most Kim Thayil solo ever lmao
My favorite Soundgarden song, along with 'Limo Wreck', so damn loose, free, and progy feeling! And heavy as hell! And Chris Cornell doing Chris Cornell things!
*Burden in my Hand* would make a solid next Soundgarden piece to cover, it's a really underrated one
Such a solid album, every track is a fucking ripper. What they used to call All Killer, No Filler.
My fav Soundgarden song is Jesus Christ Pose, best use of the band and Chris' vocals.
After this album came out, Neil Peart cited Matt's work on it as his favorite new stuff from a current drummer. High praise indeed, especially in the early 90's when Neil didn't really do any press.
🤘🧙♂🤘
they were great live, caught them opening for Guns N Roses in late 91 in Minneapolis
"I'm about to proceed all over your face." lmaooo okay I'm subscribing.
Cool story. So Chris Cornell of Soundgarden having written 2 songs in honor of his good friend Andrew Wood who had died due to a herion overdose. Andrew belonged to a band called Mother Love Bone and it also included Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament, who now were forming Pearl Jam. Chris teamed up with Stone and Jeff and guitarist Mike McCready in hopes of maybe recording some of Woods solo stuff where he could include his 2 tribute songs. Instead they decided on a complete tribute album, which they named Temple Of The Dog from a Mother Love Bone Song.
Chris when writing Hunger Strike felt it extremely important that he repeat his main verse over and over and planned to record both highs and lows but struggled on the lows.
Meanwhile enter Eddie Vedder freshly in from San Diego as he'd been chosen merely from taped over tracks he had sent Stone and Jeff. Being just having met his new band mates and their mates, Eddie just hung back until he noticed Chris's dilemma and stepped forward as asked if he could maybe help with the repeating verse. Not only did Eddie help along the now the main track on the album but not coming off as an arrogant front man that also showed he understood and knew the sound they were looking for.
Egyptians tried their best, but in the end they had to subcontract the alien slavers and their damn bulldozers...
😂
I loved both Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. They, as well as Alice In Chains, were perfect for my angsty and emo teen self. Haha.
Have you listened to mad season?
@@augustomoriames1492 Oh, yes! Love them too! Such an emotive album. You can really hear Layne's pain, there.
Great band, perfect album. Hope to see more Soundgarden or Audioslave!
👿🔱😈.. Rusty cage my fav song by soundgarden 🤘.. Also my fav album by them
“I’m going to proceed all over your face” LOLZ that was priceless
Hey man that piece my man played at the beginning was beautiful btw 🥹🖤
Chris was one of a kind. He is missed.
great song,i love the superunknown album."like suicide" has to be one of the most soulful, powerful metal songs i've heard.one of the most content times in my late teens,in my bedroom with a 2000 piece jigsaw playing the superunknown and living coulour's "times up" albums over and over.ok i was a little off as a teen haha
I'll always love those intros. Usually introduces me to new music 🫂
Oh yay! Soundgarden is always welcome in my ears.
Man I can hear some beautiful guitar played over that intro piece you were doing here. Same progression from a Tom Waits song too, I think it's "Better Off Without a Wife"
6:19 please don't "proceed" on video lmaoooo
I've been waiting for your reaction to Soundgarden! The whole album is amazing same with Superunknown. Chris Cornell what a vocalist. RIP \m/
Thanks so much for doing this, obviously my favourite video so far 😊
I'm only a year older than your man there and was obsessed with Nirvana, Guns & Roses snd Metallica so was inclined towards Chris's more aggressive vocals. They're one of those bands whose hits tend to, in my opinion, be their weaker songs but I could've picked any song from this album. Thought this one would most prick the ears and glad it had the desired effect, just shows you how musical tastes change over the years.
And as others have commented, Matt Cameron was indeed in both bands. He's practically a jazz drummer at his best, just harder. Like a velvet covered hammer. There's very little fat on that band if you know what I mean? As stripped back as you can get while still being heavy and his drums hold the whole thing together with Ben Shepherd thundering away on bass. Musically interesting with real artistic integrity, I can't say enough what a huge influence Soundgarden had on me.
Continue to love your work.
Ps. I can confirm that I am in 'merry' Bournemouth of old Englandtownshire.
Thanks for giving us the opportunity to do it. Such a great song and album. It’s nice to read what the band and album mean to you. That’s what I love most about this channel. The comments are filled with people sharing their experiences with certain bands and “the first time I heard this song” moments. Thanks for the support.
I’ll make sure Judson reads this comment so he’ll know not to address the thank you letters to Merry, England.
Down On the Upside dropped at the tail end of the grunge craze, and never really clicked with me until a number of years later. The band later explained how exhausted they were during the making of the record, and while it had some success, it also had the misfortune of following their monster Superunknown album. When they got back together, I went back and gave it another chance. There was as much growth in the music and lyrics and just plain stretching of dynamics as any other point in their career. When you speak of singles as some of the weaker offerings, that's the record I think of. Not a bad song in the bunch, but overshadowed by the singles.
If I had to choose one record by them that I couldn't live without, it's that one. But I'd be hard pressed to disagree with someone who chose any other album. I was all about PJ as well in those years. But the test of time has served SG and AIC so much more to me than any of the others that came from that scene.
Listen to 4th of July on the same album good song.
when this guy said pearl jam came out when he was 10 i remembered how old i am
How does dude suggesting the song not even know Matt Cameron is the drummer. Cmon now.
This is one of my favorite songs by them for sure
To me this song & “Call Me a Dog” from the Temple of the Dog album really showcase just how f•ckin amazing Chris Cornell was 🤯🖤🤤
Richard always looks like he is annoyed or impatient when Judson is playing piano.
He’s just mad he can’t figure out the song and he knows he should know it!
This is an interesting take because when the Seattle thing hit, everyone was crazy over Nirvana because they got pushed on MTV. I was an Alice in Chains fan because most of the metal heads I hung out with brought on board with them after the Clash of the Titans tour. I got into Soundgarden and Pearl Jam more when Singles came out, but all those bands were always a different vibe. Chris and Eddie are great singers in their own right because of how different they were, but Layne was probably the most powerful out of the three for me.
Believe it or not Chris Cornell was originally the drummer for sound garden
Great choice!
Have enjoyed your channel. May I suggest some more from the UK. Stone Roses (Love spreads, fools gold, breaking into heaven etc.), REEF (NAKED, Good feeling,), Skunk Anansie (Charlie big potato, Hedonism,..plenty of others), Paul Weller (Changing man, Sunflower) Supergrass (Moving, Late in the day,...)Royal Blood (Out of the black, Figure it out), Arctic monkeys ( When the sun goes down, I bet you good on the dance floor). Keep them coming.
Glad you came around to Chris's vocals.
Yes Matt Cameron was in both bands. Should check out The Pretty Reckless song Only Love Can Save Me Now it features both Matt and Kim on it. Very Soundgarden sounding but with Taylor Momsons writing and vocals of course. Awesome song.
My lady was watching How the Grinch Stole Christmas last night, the 2000 version. She told me Cindy Lou Who was played by Taylor Momsen. My mind was blown.
@@Greatmeasures yup good actress but a great singer song writer.
fully agree w/Judson's explanation. back then, you were either in the soundgarden camp or pearljam camp--I always felt the normie types were more pearljam :D I was in the SG camp and like Judson, never really gave PJ a chance bc to me, they were more top 40 (even though SG had chart songs too) and I didn't like Vedder's voice or vibe whatsoever. Ahh nostalgia.
Yep! It was really awesome to hear this one though. It was like the before times and the new times collided and it was kinda fully encompassing and invigorating. Does that make sense?
Ahh yes, the before times--I'm always amazed how a single song has the power to wake up a part of my brain and a set of memories I forgot were even there; like time travelling. But yes, totally makes sense--it opens a door for the old self to mingle w/the new self--exciting and terrifying all at once :) @@judsong

Would like to see y’all do whole album
Have you heard of "Maximum the Hormone"? It's... curious. Yes, that's the best way to describe it 🤣 It's just unusual, but I like some of their songs. And I like these reactions, they are also interesting, so it would be nice to see them together 🤪👌 If you are interested, the songs "Menkata Cottelee" and "Yoshu Fukushu" are good, you should watch them if you want 👍
this when people took note that Chris Cornell is G O A T, then the sick Ben bass line kicks in
Probably Cornell's craziest vocal performance, along with Jesus Christ Pose. Much prefer this one though. Love this album.
I'd have to say Beyond the Wheel is Chris' craziest vocal. Its certainly the highest is voice was
That's a tough song, but it grows on you
The live versions of Slaves are soooo much more awesome too.
His voice sounding like whining??? What’s wrong with you? Chris Cornell has an amazing voice! One of the greatest of all time!
The guy sounds pissed up
Outshined ....you'll thank me later
Great song from a great album. One of those bands that imbedded time signatures into their songs which makes it magical to listen too. They kinda suck you into it.
You ain't gonna get my address lol but I'm in 🎌
Chris Cornell - Nothing Compares to you at some point please (live version) - his voice, the arrangement, the vibe. Please add it at some point to your list.
"Badmotorfinger" & "Superunknown" are truly great albums imho.
Pearl Jam's "Ten" is also undeniable tho, & many who heard that first took PJ as "their band", & depending on the age that hits you, it can be a lifelong thing. I'll get along just fine with anyone who has Soundgarden or PJ as "their band"! :)
p.s. any chance I can interest y'all in the beautifully thru-composed (cos who needs choruses, that's why!) single "Vortex" by Jinjer sometime?... the composition offers plenty for a classically-trained fella to get his teeth into. If you're not impressed, I'll give you your money back myself! ;)
No way were Bulldozers used building the Pyramids. They didn’t even have Bulldozers back then. They used a Backhoe and 3 Ford Super Duty F350s. Oh, and I’m pretty sure they Googled the Blueprints. Cheers!
Say hello to heaven
4:19 NOPE! it was beer.
Still waiting for the MOTHER LOVE BONE reaction.....
Hoping that one of you patreon people with cash will request a Melvins song to show them where that Seattle sound came from
How about some insight on Pyramid Song or Videotape by Radiohead?
Both please
diablo swing orchestra - vodka inferno
Jaws - sleep token, pls
Yessss
Chris is great vocalist way better than Eddie i like him but he didn't had that power like Cornell
New Damage is chris to the extreme. I went the other way but I did like Pearl Jam
layne or cornell? take your pick
RIP, Chris. We will always love you.
O man linus was getting intense on the piano this time... 2in from the keys... I can see him as a mad composer.. A german one for some reason... Trying to get his Grand Symphony written...its not right it sounds like SITZEN !!!....😠.....😂😂😂...Linus van Beethoven
I'm pretty sure Pearl Jam is from Seattle too. Just saying.
Who doesn’t like Chris’ voice? I mean… really?
I never really cared for them but rusty cage and outshined are great
I bet you never really listened to their albums
I was 20 when this album came out and have been a fan ever since. But I gotta admit, I really dislike this guitar solo. Makes it hard to like the song. But, this one leads into one of the best SG songs ever, so there's that.
Remember when you used to need talent to make music.
Good song not your best interpretation video I can throw some out if you're interested
Matt Cameron is Pearl Jams' drummer now.
Does this pianist have nothing better to do than listening to rock music while being filmed for You Tube? Looks like he needs to find a new career.
Are you stupid ?
