This is my favorite Soundgarden song. It’s about feeling pent up. Chris Cornell wrote this song while on a van tour in Europe. Stuck in a rusty van in a desolate countryside felt like being stuck in a rusty cage. Fun fact: He never wrote down the lyrics, they just always stuck with him. As far as the music, Chris said, “I wanted to create this hillbilly Black Sabbath crossover that I’d never heard before.” Great reaction, as well.
@@poundtacos4006 Right? I guess if you repeat something enough times, it really does become muscle memory. I'm still impressed with Anna Kendrick doing the cup thing while singing at the same time. But I'm also impressed by any drummer who can sing and play at the same time.
@@chrissampson7569 I would say most drummers play straight beats while singing which is pretty "easy", but I can sing and play Rusty Cage, but doing the odd riffs while singing is hard! For example this song would be million times easier to sing and play the drums same time.
Chris Cornell´s passing hit me hard. Thank you for this. No4 of the big 4 of grunge is Pearl Jam guys. Grunge is my growing up years. I remember being a teen, having my first car in high school and Nivana´s Nevermind cassette in that car at full volume. Good times.
I’m guessing that badmotorfinger (1991) came out well before the video game (?) Pearl Jam is generally regarded as ‘number four’ in the big 4 of grunge Here come 150 comments about what is and is not ‘grunge’ Soundgarden: Burden in My Hand, Blow Up the Outside World, Rhinosaur, Drawing Flies, Hands All Over, Birth Ritual, Flower, Beyond the Wheel, Pretty Noose (unfortunate title but one of my favorites)… there are so many great ones! Piece of My Heart has always been my favorite Janis Joplin song. She really kills it on Cry Baby too. There’s also Me and Bobby McGee… there you go Hollywood, don’t be caught slipping when someone asks you to name 3 Janis Joplin songs 😆😊
The Seattle grunge band era was the best time in music for me and I saw them all live back then. Back then, concert tickets were affordable even for young people and we went to a concert somewhere every week. Today's prices for tickets are just disturbed and I wonder how the 20-year-old can still afford. Chris Cornell's singing voice was unique whether on Soundgarden, Temple of Dog, Audioslave or solo.
Hell yeah guys! ALL the love and respect for Chris Cornell, but the rest of the band are amazing as well. Matt Cameron’s drumming is admired by many drummers. At some point, you should check out “Only Love Can Save Me Now” by The Pretty Reckless. It features Matt Cameron and Kim Thayil from Soundgarden, and it is the most Soundgarden sounding non-Soundgarden song. Matt and Kim are a big part of their iconic sound. 💜
Nirvana, PEARL JAM, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains were the main 4 for mainstream grunge. You did mention Mother Love Bone and Mudhoney for originators of grunge, but the only downside was they weren't really well known outside of Seattle or college radio. I'm very surprised you haven't hit up Janis. Piece of My Heart, Bobby McGee, Mercedes Benz, Cry Baby, Summertime and Try are definitely worth your time. She was really amazing and another one gone before her time.

So, he might have been imagining cruising the European countryside on a motorcycle? From Songfacts. This tune is a monster and conveys the sense of being stir crazy and ready to violently break out! Chris is indeed one of the premier vocalist/songwriter of his time.
Fantastic song, amazing band, and one of the greats in rock vocals in Chris Cornell (RIP). Thanks for playing and reacting to one of my favorite songs by the band, off their superb "Badmotorfinger" album.
Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger and Alice In Chains' Facelift are still my favorite two grunge albums. Both still sound awesome at high volume. Have a Headbangin' New Year guys 🤘❤️🇨🇦

Nice, I'm glad you guys reacted to this one! Absolutely love this song, great reaction guys! 🤘🤘🤙🤙
Pearl Jam most definitely has to be #4 there! STP were from San Diego not Seattle and had the one Grunge-y album Core. That's it. Honorable mentions: Mudhoney, Green River, Tad Also gotta get to Jesus Christ Pose, Blow up the Outside World and Pretty Noose
As I remember, even if Nirvana was the most famous, Pearl Jam actually outsold them at the time. They're also the band with the second highest amount of views under Nirvana, out of those four.
@@bettyrocker_Lia upon reviewing Purple after 15? 20 yrs? I can concede the album holds closer to the tone of grunge than I remember, so much so that Lounge Fly and Silvergun Superman are almost encroaching on Soundgarden territory just as Interstate Love Song does with the Pearl Jam sound or as Army Ants is to AIC. My initial point of STP's inconsistency with the sound of grunge, particularly when compared to PJ, may have been overstated.
There's nothing like Chris Cornell in the mornings. This is my all time favorite vocalist. His range, feeling, depth, and talent are not surpassed by anyone living or dead. I love watching you two react to songs like this. It is apparent that you appreciate his talent as well. Nice reaction, guys!

From two of the most important critical voices at the time, their approval can't be overstated nowadays - ' These guys kick ass!' and ' Soundgarden rules! ' - Bevis & Butthead
UGH !!! I love that line "Its raining Icepicks on your steel shores !" Something about that line always resonated with me and paints a picture you can feel ! Even if your not quite sure the meaning ! But if it makes you feel it , abstract or not it did its job
Man, the grunge bands left it all on the field. Chris sang his mf’n ass off. So did Layne. Makes me think of the AIC lyric “How I fight is why I’m feelin’ sore” from It Ain’t Like That. Would love to see this song reacted to, btw.
Are you guys familiar with the legendary 70's artist Peter Frampton? Peter Frampton did a cover of Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" and he absolutely nailed it, he played the whole song (guitar and vocals) through the guitar and it's awesome. It's essentially an instrumental but he's "singing" through his guitar, I know you guys would love it!
The real-life inspiration behind the lyrics was actually these “very claustrophobic” tours Soundgarden used to go on - consisting of only a van, “one crew guy and a… U-Haul filled with gear” - before they blew up
Great reaction!! I'm not sure, but I think his "rusty cage", refers to his anger, sadness and guilt, associated with the death of Andrew Wood....his self-imposed cage. He longed to move past those feelings...but ultimately, never could.
Well thank you for opening up the Janis requests. My favorites are “Maybe” and her cover of “Summertime” but I just love her. If you haven’t heard “Bobby McGee” that’s a must, too. She had 3 different bands and there’s plenty to dig into with her so I hope we do, gentlemen. 😁

Haha... when you said "Learn to swim" I thought they were going to drop into Aenima. But for Janis, her performance of "Ball and Chain" at Woodstock is legendary. Easily available.
Was able to see them in '91 a one of their ramp up shows, at home in Olympia, Washington, about a month before this album came out. Edit: I think there's a video floating around of to that show

So the first guitar note hits and he is shot from a Cannon, just as I nail it to pass him in the wide spot. It's an awesome road. And we tore it up! What a perfect coincidence.

Andrew from Mother Love Bone and Chris were best friends during their teenage years. At 16 Andrew OD'd, they were roommates. Chris was to be home but came in to find Andrew dead. It was the catalyst to Chris's tortured life. So SO sad. I believe there's an interview where he talked about it or Edie Vedder does. I know Eddie doesn't talk about Chris's end. He states if he tried to he'd probably join him. Chris's eldest daughter has lived with Vedders family for years and is considered a daughter. Makes me cry....
Cornell’s voice was truly peerless. Jeff Buckley was amazing, too, in terms of range. Cornell was a fan and actually helped fund and produce the posthumous live album “mystery white boy” - worth doing a reaction or review of as well. Back to Cornell, though; speaking of his soulfulness, you should listen to/review his song “say hello to heaven” with temple of the dog if you haven’t yet. Crazy soulful tribute to their friend/ex bandmate Andy Wood, the singer of mother lovebone.
I think the song is about being in a rut or feeling that life has become stagnant and just wanting to bust out and change your situation. I don't know if you guys accept suggestions but "Gasoline" by Audioslave is worth a listen.
As others have mentioned the Big Four were Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam. (I still have issues with the "grunge" label, but that's a different argument [Nirvana is more of a punk band, AIC is hard/heavy rock, Soundgarden is mostly prog rock, Pearl Jam is just straight-up alternative].) As for more Soundgarden songs to react to (and I fully encourage more from Soundgarden): "Beyond the Wheel" shows off three of Chris' four-octave vocal range. "Birth Ritual" is an often overlooked song that will pretty much rip your face off. "Burden In My Hand" off Soundgarden's underrated _Down on the Upside_ album. "Room A Thousand Years Wide" off of _Badmotorfinger_. (One of my favorite songs from them.)
Great song by a great band. Although Chris Cornell was first inspired to write the song while on tour in Europe, I suspect the pent-up rage came from his upbringing. His older brother said the two of them were repeatedly beaten by their father, who was an alcoholic. Chris began experimenting with illegal substances at only 12-yo as an escape. If you want more songs with soul from Chris, I agree with another commenter that you should check out “When I’m Down” - the live performance at the Troubadour in 2010. Written by Chris Cornell for piano. Incredible, soulful performance. There are lots of great Soundgarden songs still to react to, including The Day I Tried to Live, Mailman, Blow Up the Outside World, My Wave, and of course Black Hole Sun. I think Big, Dumb Sex off an early album (Louder Than Love) is also worth a listen because it’s a hilarious spoof of the groupie-obsessed hair metal bands of the 80’s. Of course, the F-word features heavily in that one, so not sure whether that’s something you want on your channel.
This song I haven't heard in years. The thought that popped into my head was that the song has a Rob Zombie Superbeast kinda feel to it. Great road songs.
I hope you guys check out more Byzantine, I just wanted to let you know that Byzantine shared your video on their official channel. Byzantine is a band that's worthy of a deep dive, so I really hope you guys check out more from Byzantine! Thanks again for checking them out!
You won’t be able to do a reaction to it, but check out Soundgarden “Big Dumb Sex”. Also, react to earlier stuff as well as the super heavy “4th of July”.

Road Rash! In the future, is there a place for a Mastodon monday? Would be awesome to see you guys discover their discography
This was the first song I ever heard by them back in the day! This in my unworthy opinion is their greatest song ever! You can fight me on it
As others have mentioned the Big Four were Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam. (I still have issues with the "grunge" label, but that's a different argument [Nirvana is more of a punk band, AIC is hard/heavy rock, Soundgarden is mostly prog rock, Pearl Jam is just straight-up alternative].)
As for more Soundgarden songs to react to (and I fully encourage more from Soundgarden):
"Beyond the Wheel" shows off three of Chris' four-octave vocal range.
Of course, the F-word features heavily in that one, so not sure whether that’s something you want on your channel.
wow i am having flashbacks to when i played Road Rash loved that game this song is Amazing.
Thank heavens for this react! Rabbit 🐰 🕳️
This was a soundtrack for motobike video game called "ROAD RASH" in 1991 so u were right, feels like ur on a motobike 😂
The end of this song is the shit! You guys should do "Mailman" next if you're looking for more Soundgarden.
Road Rash did in fact start on Sega Genesis
Road Rash was on SEGA! I have my dad’s SEGA Genesis and have played that game countless times since I was a kid
This is my favorite Soundgarden song -and will be my retirement song!!
I love the incognito ‘Tool’ shirt!
Bad omen -like a villain 💯🔥
You won’t be able to do a reaction to it, but check out Soundgarden “Big Dumb Sex”. Also, react to earlier stuff as well as the super heavy “4th of July”.
