@@Evl_1 When they got Phil, it seemed to click what they were and they all leveled-up, so to speak. Those old glam rock albums were something else. I really couldn't get into it. There were like 4 I think. With titles like I Am the Night (not bad) to Projects in the Jungle. I was so slack-jawed when I saw all this.
I had been a fan since like '93 and I didn't really get to find any of that sfuff until like after the millenia. I had heard rumors and stuff up to that point. But this was a time when Marilyn Manson was that kid from Growing Pains and Ozzy snorted ants (which turned out to be true), so back then we didn't know.
Unfettered internet access and curiosity finally revealed all the stuff.

Thrash and groove metal come from the same foundation of heavy metal, especially bands like Sabbath. Pantera helped popularize it in the 90’s around the time Metallica were becoming more commercial around Black Album. Sepultura and White Zombie were others that fit the groove metal mold. In a way groove metal was like a bridge between thrash and nu metal.

"Cowboys from Hell" (1990) is Pantera's fifth studio album (if you count their independently released glam metal albums), and their debut on Atlantic Records. This album was their first commercial success. It is perceived as the official debut of the band by many fans as it has definitely left the glam metal label. This is the second album with Philip Anselmo on vocals. The song "Cowboys From Hell" and also "Cemetery Gates" were both from this album. You should also check out the song "The Sleep" from this album.

Phil Anselmo was from the New Orleans area. A good friend of mine was also friends with Phil and one night we all went to a local bar to have some drinks and Phil was telling me he was in a local band called ‘Razor White’. This was back when heavy metal was still really popular. He eventually moved to Texas and joined ‘Pantera’. If I’m not mistaken, Phil’s first album with Pantera was called ‘Power Metal’, and I loved that album! You could start to hear them transitioning from power metal into a more thrashy sound which appeared on the ‘Cowboys From Hell’ album. Anything pre cowboys from hell is sorta scrubbed from the internet and not talked about much because much of their thrash fan base do not seem to be able to understand bands can evolve. Phil’s voice is incredible on the power metal album, before all the growling started, check it out if you get a chance.

So, I'd almost say this was mid- Pantera. They have four glam metalesque albums preceding Cowboys that have some bangers on them as well. You can absolutely look at their albums, from beginning of career to the end and see an evolution of style and aggression. CFH is heavier than the prior four, Vulgar heavier than that, Far beyond et tu, and Great Southern Trendkill is a masterpiece of metal. And then you have Reinventing the Steel, which has the brutal 'Immortally Insane' on it that was featured in the second Heavy Metal movie....

Y’all gotta react to Korn - Blind live at Rock AM ring 2007 with guess who…JOEY JORDISON playing drums. It’s absolutely insanity. Might just be better than the Woodstock version. Joey playing drums just adds to it. You won’t regret watching that one

Phil gave me a dead arm after a show in Baltimore in the 90s…my uncle used to be a roadie for ZZ Top and has some connections….after the show we drank Jack and Phil kept trying to fight me, lol…was playing of course but shit was hilarious…he was also LOADED on heroin…but he wanted to go punch for punch on each other’s arms…I let him hit me and then he quit…so I was just left with a massive bruise for 2 weeks…Phil can hit like a damn mule…great dude too…glad he’s sober. Dude’s a legend

Texas! I actually use to hang with Vinnie Paul just a few months to a year before he passed on. Use to work for a karaoke DJ and we hosted a show at his local hangout in Arlington. Great guy...very down to earth! R.I.P. Vinnie.

This was their fifth album(1990), second with Phil, and their breakout album where they abandoned their glam metal roots and became groove metal pioneers that shocked the metal world with something new.

Groove metal is like a combination of thrash metal & sludge metal. One of Pantaras biggest influences at the time was Metallica. Phil (being from New Orleans) was heavily influenced by bands like eyehategod & Crowbar. Both are Louisiana bands that played sludge metal

So, I awoke one night to hearing something played over and over and it was initially disturbing. But then I realized one of my housemates was practicing this song on drums and left it on repeat. ‘Oh, it’s just Cowboys from Hell,’ I thought, and went back to sleep. WHO DOES THAT p.s. When I saw them live at Towson University, they DESTROYED US. If you haven’t done Walk, for the love of all that rocks...

This was the 1st album they started to leave behind the hair metal days anstarted d transforming into what they call groove metal ( to be honest I don't think anybody else plays groove metal, but what do i know). now enough about pantera, Rotting Christ just anounced their NA tour and I think you should defenitly check out one of their shows, that being said I think you should react to them, my personal favorite track is Athanti este...
P.S. I will keep asking untill you react to them....
P.S. 2 these guys are 1 of the oldest Black metal bands with a history of over 35 years and have toured all around the world
