They'd then have to guarantee a level-up at that point of the story, even if the player's already reached max level for some reason. Though I suppose it could always be a fake "guaranteed" level-up that doesn't actually do anything, at least in these older games where there isn't an EXP flag slowly rising.
Zeldara109 They could still do it now by tricking you into thinking the fight gave all or one character enough exp to level up by raising a fake flagpole that starts from where the real ones currently are. You most likely wouldn't be at max level unless you cheat and/or grind for months. edit: it doesn't have to be the final boss btw.
This could actually be easily achieved by maxing out EXP Gain at a certain number which does NOT equal max Level and having each major Boss be one free level up. Now you can ALWAYS do that because unless the player somehow skips the boss he can't miss that level up
Everybody here is commenting about Cackletta and the level-up star, but I'm thinking about how the button presses at 0:17 are perfectly synchronized with the music.
Loved how mario actually would turn and still be capable of actions in the level up screen. Some games just freeze the character in whatever they are doing. Good to know Nintendo tried hard to prevent soft locks
Having the level up screen on while bowletta "dies" would have been an even greater fake-out edit: Now that they're working on a remake, I hope that they do something like this
I find it amusing that Bowletta is set to give 5000 EXP and 2000 coins for no reason. I wonder if at some point earlier in design, the game would've continued after the final battle...
Probably just to be stronger for the final-final battle with Cackletta Soul? (The 2000 coins make no sense though, you can't leave after beating Bowletta.) The real final boss was probably Bowletta before, and after you defeated her you could still play the game normally except that there are no bosses.
The final battle still ends with Bowletta exploding, normally-- there's that short scene where Mario and Luigi are spit out. So the EXP and coins could've been given there, if they decided to make the game save after the ending (as PMTTYD and SPM allow). I wonder why they'd change that.

It goes to show how bullet proof the code for this game is if only one boss causes a soft lock and the rest are at least recoverable from. I'm mostly impressed with the facts that Mario in the lv up screen shares the same animation calls as his normal battle/OW ones as he actually just looked at the bomb and then proceeded to just get blown out of the star as well as the fact that the final boss actually is that stable and doesn't cause crash or lock. Well done Nintendo and Alpha Dream you have made a DAMN SOLID game which only goes to add to super star saga's legendary status.
People aren't talking about it, but the softlock at 3:33 is pretty terrifying. Hearing the theme of the main antagonist play over the pitch black background, as Mario and Luigi are gone, and due to the meddling of the player who should do this, the world is drenched in eternal darkness- something that the Bros. and your Game Boy Advance are now also familiar with.
This happens because internally, bosses actually have 5000 more health than you need to deal in damage to kill them. Normally, you'll never see the effects of this because bosses are set to die with the boss death animation as soon as they drop below 5000. For non-boss enemies, they die "normally" (without the boss death animation) when their health hits zero. What we're doing here is dealing enough damage for a boss to die normally, which the game may or may not be prepared for.
I'm pretty sure that is the default amount of coins given. Enemies like Fighter Fly (i don't remember the name sorry if i get it wrong) give 8 coins too.
The enemies that drop 8 coins in international versions of the game are the Goomdivers, Malibuts, Elite Gritty Goombas, Clumphs, and the Chomp Bros (if they still have the Chain Chomps with them).
I knew this could happen! One time I managed to get such a big combo with Knockback Bros Advance against Cackaletta's heart that I triggered the last glitch there but never managed to repeat it. Nice to see confirmation that it does actually happen and that it can screw with other bosses too.
2:43 *Mario:* "Um, do you mind? I'm in the middle of levelling up right now..." I love how Luigi somehow doesn't get knocked out by the bob-omb either.
Huh, curious as to how Mario dies "properly" during the Bowletta cutscene when levelling up, even though 401 HP should be enough to take the hit (as evidenced by Luigi).
To be clear, it's not like Nintendo "took down" the music in this video. I had to have it removed myself in order to be eligible for monetization... and no matter how I discuss this topic, I will probably always come off as a sellout youtuber, so I'm not going to discuss much further. I'm of the opinion I would like to be compensated for the work I put into these videos, instead of Nintendo claiming and monetizing them for themselves. Even if it means music in my video gets removed or ruined; it's better than to remove such videos altogether.
Sonario648 yes but you end up with an even smaller amount of change and are subject to even more restrictions. They don't allow the use of emulators nor programs that would be used in a TAS.
Dang, The closest thing we ever had to Mario being killed in the Level Up Screen on purpose was in 3D World when Bowser came in after the end of the level screen at the end of World Castle to kidnap all the Sprixies at once. I would love it if Mario and Luigi 6 did something like this where the Boss gets back up and does harm to Mario and Luigi in the Level Up Screen.
The Green Dragon 53 This was also done in Paper Mario 64.. fter you beat the boss in the volcano, Mario wave his finger like usual, and then he goes like "what ?" and the boss come back with a second form
HardSonicStorm also in paper Mario ttyd with you beating doopliss and the you got a crystal star menu pops up but u go back in the chapter to find out that doopliss stole you're identity.
Getting Mario & Luigi knocked out of the victory screen by the time Bob-omb should've been in the remake to really emphasize the point of a fake victory in the Bowletta battle. That honestly fits too well.
Ya know, once when I beat the yeti girl (actually the very first time I ever fought her), the ice girl didn't reappear and instead I got to go on with Mario's turn, but as you can guess there were no attack targets and thus the game softlocked.
