      I am with Wes Nelson in this. Awful conditions. Caused awful approach and decent. But the landing itself? The touchdown? Brilliant! Even more so given the awful approach and decent caused by the awful conditions.
      It is about what you identify as landing. When the caption said awful landings, I expected hard touchdowns; like several landings I experienced when it felt like the landing gears hit/"slammed" onto the airstrip with the (is it hydraulics? or that mechanism which gives the gears their "springs") pressed hard to maximum compression.
      But in this video, the pilots managed smooth landing/touchdown at the final point.

    I've been a passenger on an AirBus A320 during a windy day go around (not at this airport) and seeing these videos really helps me put it into perspective! It looks fairly peaceful from the outside, even though as a passenger it was the most uncomfortable flight experience I've ever had. I have so much respect for pilots, especially those who take the time for a go-around. As they said in my fear of flying class, waiting is our friend when it comes to flying. If they wait to land, it's for good reason! Thanks for sharing.

      The approaches did look a bit (no, a lot) hairy though...
      What surprised me the most about this clip is the number of pilots who seemed about to fly the whole go-around with the wheels down. Strikes me as an odd way to do it. And I thought all modern airliners had a "go around" button that does an automatic and very rapid checklist - flaps, throttles, undercarriage, etc etc...?

      Oh yes there are. We hit the runway at Kuala Lumpur one stormy night like an Ivan Lendl served ace! The poor 747's wing tips nearly slapped the ground [quick check to see if landing gear shockies were not protruding out the top of the wing] and it seemed like an eternity before the wheels came to the runway again, whereupon the reverse thrust and brakes were applied like you've never seen before, and all while the nose of the aircraft was lurching wildly to and fro from left to right as we managed to shed speed. There was a full on storm going at the time, and I think the poor pilots got ambushed and slammed by a windshear right on flaring out for touch down. Probably about the most memorable 'hairy' landing I can remember - but then there was that night in the 70's, flying from regional Albury-Wodonga to Sydney in the old faithful Fokker Friendship f27, when coming into Sydney the Pilots could not get a gear lock confirmation on the Port Landing Gear, with us flying around in a hold out over Penrith way for Sometime, and both the Pilot an co Pilot taking turns to come down and look through the windows with a torch as the landing gear was lowered and retracted numerous times. Pilots were unsure if it was properly down and locked or whether it would fold on landing. Best thing was, that the mob from Tallangatta Football Club (and who'd been carrying on like kindergarten kiddies who'd had way too much red cordial for most of the flight) were now seriously calm and silent - you could hear a pin drop in that plane right then.
      Any way they eventually went for the landing. We came into Sydney from the western St Peter's aporoach (main Runway), everybody leaning forward on pillows, all the pretty flashing lights of Aviation Fire Services lined up along the taxiways, but the landing was uneventful (but possibly Jesus had a bit of a win with a few souls in the football club mob). 🤣

After all, they get to do what they love, only in a different setting. ... They'll explain you everything and they can show you that there is nothing to fear. Non-pilot here: Those look like very impressive handling skills. A couple of questions for pilots
    1. Should some of the landings have been go-arounds, or is it impossible to tell since you weren't there?
    2. If you are thinking during an approach "hmm, maybe I should go around, does that usually means you should?

    • @RomanRoblox
      @RomanRoblox 5 лет назад

      1. If the crosswind indicates above 30 knots (depends on other factors/aircraft but i'd say average is around 30 knots) then the pilot has to do a go-around and hold until the winds calm. The winds look like above the limit in the video, but even if they weren't if the pilot doesn't feel comfortable with landing he will just perform a go-around.
      2. Yes, if the pilot(s) doesn't feel comfortable with the landing he has all the right to do a go-around (airlines even encourage this)

I was in the pattern to land and upon turning final, the crosswind component was absolutely nuts for the little Cessna I was flying. I was crabbing a good 50 degrees to try to stay on centerline. I did two go-arounds before the wind died down sufficiently for me to land without having to change my pants afterwards. Great job to the pilots of the big jets in handling these conditions!!
