- Landings in very difficult conditions with cross winds and fo arounds in Madeira Airport. The cause? Windshear on the short final for 05, a terrible afternoon, with the wind not facilitating the landings. We are a huge community of airplane lovers. cut "HORRIBLE || Very Awful landings" from the title. clickbait only gets you so far...
Yea I wasn’t impressed with the title... at all
Jason, any dumb hick rookie can land better. I use de to land cessasse 150 tô 210, piper cubs, etc. In these crosswinds.
You should consider changing the title or at lest have what you would consider a good a landing for this runway for comparison. Theses' guys look like carrier aircraft on approach but the runway is not moving.
@@SLevy-gq4if Are not the Planes, you mentioned, "Trainer" type Aircraft? I'm just givin' you the business. I cannot even buy a Kite.
Those landings weren't "very awful." Those were beautiful under those "very awful" conditions. Bravo for those pilots.
@Lazys The Dank Engineer good landings
But my heart was in my throat while I watched!
I am with Wes Nelson in this. Awful conditions. Caused awful approach and decent. But the landing itself? The touchdown? Brilliant! Even more so given the awful approach and decent caused by the awful conditions.
It is about what you identify as landing. When the caption said awful landings, I expected hard touchdowns; like several landings I experienced when it felt like the landing gears hit/"slammed" onto the airstrip with the (is it hydraulics? or that mechanism which gives the gears their "springs") pressed hard to maximum compression.
But in this video, the pilots managed smooth landing/touchdown at the final point.
Facts
@Lazys The Dank Engineer why don't you be a pilot then mr
These are not "awful" landings. The approach looks incredibly difficult and there was wind too. Hats off to the pilots for their amazing knowledge and skills.
Mathew Choe thats cutest little frog ive ever seen
This is how we haul the mail. Visual approaches always make you look like an ASS. Even with a path indicator, "She works hard for the money".
Pilots landing there undergo special training before they are allowed to land Funchal. These pilots are amongst the best in the business
The "awful" reviews were from the coach seats, although they prob. didn't complain too loudly, at least until they debarked and changed their drawers
@Lazys The Dank Engineer No, any intact landing is good.
Can we appreciate for a minute how much skill this requires
@6:04 - 6:58: That Condor landing looked like/reminded me of a landing on the deck of an aircraft carrier.
As a pilot myself, I can appreciate the difficulty of trying to land in these conditions. Good work from skilled pilots in difficult conditions to bring down their planes safely.
More like horrible crosswinds and skilled pilots
Precisely
@David Roberts It actually says "awful landings"... but as others have pointed out, it's more likely a language barrier issue than pilot bashing. But hey, it's the youtube comments, 'quick to judge' is part of the game!
How about Pilots with huge cojones!
Richard Baer, exactly...which landing was horrible?
IKR
Very misleading title. Should be “Skilled Pilots, Difficult Landings”
It also takes balls which many men/women don’t have
From what I heard, The guy who makes the videos is foreign and writes things in Portuguese. So it’s likely this is just a poor auto-translation by RUclips.
THE FBI Gotcha.
@@FloridianPriest no? He translated it himself he's just stupid
Agree 100% Person who made title is mentally challenged.
“Hey, let’s build an airport where you have to make a U-turn right before you land!”
To be fair that is one of the few areas that you could there, even so the other end of the runway is on stilts out into the sea so it's a really strange landing if your a passenger unused to the airport
In the world u can't build airport everywhere
I've been a passenger on an AirBus A320 during a windy day go around (not at this airport) and seeing these videos really helps me put it into perspective! It looks fairly peaceful from the outside, even though as a passenger it was the most uncomfortable flight experience I've ever had. I have so much respect for pilots, especially those who take the time for a go-around. As they said in my fear of flying class, waiting is our friend when it comes to flying. If they wait to land, it's for good reason! Thanks for sharing.
Retitle it to “why this runway and airport needs to be placed somewhere else”
perfect, he hehe he
But where then. Madeira isnt that big.
..madeira isnt that big and if you would build it somewhere else it wouldnt be safer because of the hills....at least there is the option of falling into the sea rather than running straight into the cliffs. 😅
No kidding
tijmen2106 then the title should be....why Madeira doesn’t need an airport 😂
I didn’t see a horrible landing. None crashed, so they were ALL good landings.
On the contrary. None even *bounced*, so they were absolutely excellent textbook landings.
The approaches did look a bit (no, a lot) hairy though...
What surprised me the most about this clip is the number of pilots who seemed about to fly the whole go-around with the wheels down. Strikes me as an odd way to do it. And I thought all modern airliners had a "go around" button that does an automatic and very rapid checklist - flaps, throttles, undercarriage, etc etc...?
I totally agree!
You can always, go around. If you don't look right, coming down. Don't wait until you're sideways, or sliding on the ground, you can always, go around.
@@christopherbedford9897 Nope they don't, as far as I know, there is no 'go around' button.
Wait till your on one of those planes then you will realise
Feel like condors motto is "we get it on the ground when others cant"
These pilots are very talented, skilled, and took their responsibilities very seriously. Facing such strong crosswinds is a tough thing to do for a pilot, and these footages just proved how successful the pilots are in managing not only their career, yet also at landing a passenger plane in tough weather conditions.
Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing . Remember that.
So very true

alf vasquez absolutely agree with you!
Jake Heke there is *at least* heavy crosswind in almost every one of these attempted landings, not to mention what looks like there might be some wind sheer. These conditions are pretty crappy and some pilots might have trouble in these conditions.
And they butterize the run way
Honestly, the pilot in the first clip did a very good job. You know the conditions are extremely bad when you need a second try but he nailed it
I think the 'awful' part is for the pilots. Many 'go arounds' but must be one hell of a place to try to land in cross winds. Kudos to those pilots.
That title is an absolute insult to the pilots, there was not a single "Horrible" or "awful" landing in this whole video. You should be ashamed aviationchannel.
I think English isn't his first language so it was probably just lost in translation
Exactly, Actually the landings were all really nice once an approach was stabilized. This was a REALLY difficult approach to stabilize!
the question is who decided runway like that.
azan subhie probably someone a long time ago when planes were a lot smaller

I have a friend who used to be a BA pilot and she told me you need lots of flight simulation before you can land at Maderia! So these pilots are highly trained and skilled!
As a passenger, I can not even IMAGINE how green I'd be after one of these flights. The pilots must dread flying into this place. I'd love to see it from inside the cockpit, but...they have enough problems just trying to land. Unbelieveable job!
Actually I have a friend who used to work at Airberlin on the Airbus A320, he used to fly to this airport a lot, he actually loved flying into this airport because of the fact that it was challenging and unique from others. Also, if you want to see a cockpit landing, search up, "Captain Joe landing Madeira" it's a video from inside the cockpit of an A320 with live Air Traffic Control communications and all the checklists as well. You should definitely chrck it out. He is now a 747 pilot for Cargolux because he lost his job at his old airline and he's got some really good videos on his channel you should check it out!
I think they'd love the challenge and achievement in landing there.
@@cbisme6414 Probably what they say AFTER they have landed.
I believe the pilot puts on diapers before arrival at that airport.
I would say great landings. In "horrible, very awful" conditions
Why not call it what it is? "Highly skilled pilots, in extremely difficult conditions"

I thought considering the conditions, the pilots did a tremendous job! Hats off to them for a safe landing!
So first off, really cool video. Next, did anyone else think there was a bird in your room?? LOL

That end of the runway is actually elevated (like a freeway overpass). The winds sweep up over the edge and create very difficult downdrafts on the runway. These pilots had their hands full and performed admirably.
For those who don't know: This is a category C airport - the highest level and it requires special pilot training in order to be granted permission to land there.
Why is it so difficult to land there?
@@tututhebudgie2154 wind
@@tututhebudgie2154 Because the runway is susceptible to strong winds and turbulence.
@@tututhebudgie2154 more specifically... Crosswinds. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but the opening scene shows a fully extended windsock blowing 90° to the runway. Landing into wind isn't generally a problem, unless it's extremely gusty. Landing when the wind is trying to blow you off the Runway, especially if it's gusty, is very problematic. The the near 90-degree turn necessary to line up with the runway at the last minute isn't helpful either! They must have been very limited as to locations for this Airport.
@@tututhebudgie2154 short, curved approach with steep descent.
Always amazing , the relief in the aircraft when the wheels are down and the back thrust is felt ,every passenger breaths and claps and cheers . Awsom experience .All pilots landing in Madeira have to have an experienced pilot at their side until they too are competent. Well done, and to do this for a job......must give job satisfaction.
Aviation Channel, these aren’t “awful landings” or bad pilots, they’re extremely skilled and you could never do what they could do, change the title
Very skilled pilots, imagine what the passengers must have been feeling like in such landings.
Ive landed like that coming into saint louis so much wind and turbulence, idk how the pilot did it, we were rocking from side to side and he just set us down on the runway like it was no big deal. Major respect for pilots.
This makes me want to visit Madeira...

Same here... it was horrible. It seemed as we were going down or something but thank god we made it ok. Awesome skills from our female and male pilot 😄
Dramamine, and lots of it.
I think the Condor B753 landing at 1:58 was brilliant, given the difficult approach. It was awesome, not awful. Thanks for the lovely footage.
It could be the camera angle but it looks like an awfully short short final.
Its the camera angle. If it was zoomed out we could get a better perspective of the planes angle of attack to the runway. Without any reference to the surrounding area of the plane, it makes it look more intense. That irritated me that I wasn't able to see the planes approach position to the runway.
That was awesome no matter that the camera angle!
Superb high quality footage. Thanks!
That is some crazy wind! Great footage.. Thanks!..❤
I have to agree with most people here, greatly skilled pilots in horrible weather conditions. My hat's off to them. Thank you.
Wow, fantastic footage from this windy and challenging day to fly. I do no think I would have wanted to have been on some of those flights!!
I know I would have wanted to be OFF them! Dreadful ...
Amazing footage - absolutely wild seeing a plane like a 757 being thrown around like that. Challenging landings!

Awesome video especially the dual/triple angles from outside inside the cockpit and both in sync!!
Man that Primera go-around was amazing. Superb video mate.
Well filmed. Liked.
Great video! Nice spotting. I really liked the condor 757!

Great footages, especially those with the spectacular go arrounds. Big like
Very good captured mate well done
Great video as always Samuel, love the go arounds!
Incredible footage as always at Madeira! Wind-shear is, for sure, nasty! Liked!
no wind shear, wind was low speed , only thermal turbulences+light wind downwash from the relief...common known on mountain airfields...

I lived in Ponta Delgada (Azores) in '83 & on the main land In 84. I learned Portuguêse with the Açorean "Micalence" (sp?) accent. I spent some time on Madeira as well. This was BEFORE they had extended the runway to almost double what it is today. Landings had to be exact. The same weather problems existed then. Several years earlier a plane attempting to land dropped below the runway and made full impact with the shear perpendicular cliff where the road is. All onboard were killed.
Not just Madeira, but all Portuguêse people have a tradition of all passengers clapping upon landing. It was never more appropriate then safely landing here. For takeoff they used a shuttle to back the plane up to end of the runway where they land and back the plane up where the rear wheel were close to the end of the runway. The back of the plane hung out past the end. I was looking straight down with no runway below me. Only a vertical cliff, a road leading to the airport and ocean. The pilot would then set the brakes and throttle up till the brakes reached their limit. They would then pop the brakes and give it all she had. Definitely cool! Just like a Drag Strip.
BTW Christopher Columbus's wife was the daughter of the King of Madeira. Also, he was taught how to sail by the Portuguese based in Lisbon.
I love this stuff! You have to have serious balls to be a commercial or military pilot imo.
Wow 😮 stunning video, I really liked it 😃
These are how pilots skilled pilots land their aircraft in unforgiving air turbulence. Yet, some of them get crappy pay from airlines.
How much to they get paid / year?
@Kill Me $50k ?

VERY AWFUL LANDINGS ??? The ones that landed were pretty solid, not awful at all. Maybe awful winds?
Well everything is relative...sitting as a passenger in one of these planes during these types can be a frightening and awful experience, don't you agree?
nothing you can really do about it though. you can't control the wind
Not true. Eat less beans and onion. I find the wind is less volatile.
Awful to have to deal with perhaps?
Christian Saba this is what I was about to say. it should have been awful for the people to be in a plane who is blown away by the wind just like a toy. The pilots did a great job btw, once they managed to stabilize the plane for a good landing:-)

What an amazing job by the pilots of that first Condor 757
AWESOME PILOT.
Legend has it that the Brussels Airlines flight is still circling today and when the wind is calm you can faintly hear the sound of an airplane applying thrust
Some great pilot skills on these adverse weather landings.
You have an amazing camera, and a good sense of how to use it -- and ample patience
Great landings, terrible conditions
Appreciated those landings and applaud for the skills and efforts of those pilots.
Always safety first.
Masterpieces of landing, wow, great jobs!
Beautiful landings, skilled pilots, I think it's wonderful to pilot huge passenger planes! Wow!
Came back to watch this video. In retrospect, it reminds me of a time when I was flying in Rota, Spain. I was in the pattern to land and upon turning final, the crosswind component was absolutely nuts for the little Cessna I was flying. I was crabbing a good 50 degrees to try to stay on centerline. I did two go-arounds before the wind died down sufficiently for me to land without having to change my pants afterwards. Great job to the pilots of the big jets in handling these conditions!!
I bet the 'sink rate' warning was annoying that day😉lol. Awesome skills by those pilots though and a bit of excitement on the flightdeck for those approaches 😊

All passengers at this airport should be greeted after landing with one of those little bags only this time with clean underwear inside.
Very skilled pilots versus nature should be the title. Obviously these are skilled AND BRAVE pilots. Its obviously the situation in regard to winds at the landing strip that causes these dangerous flying conditions.

Madeira is fantastic to visit. I've been so many times, and the pilots who do land here are certified specifically to land in Madeira.
There hasn't been an accident there since the 1970s.
@@boringperson-zb8vy And it's good to mention that the accident only happened due to bad visibility conditions (fog/lack of lights in the runway - led to poor piloting judgement) and a much shorter runway. It was 1600m back then and now it's 2780m :)
