  • Take a look back at Saoirse Ronan's stunning performance in Joe Wright's 'Atonement'. Earning her first Oscar nomination at the age of 13, Saoirse Ronan ranks among the youngest Academy Award nominees of all time.
    What is Atonement about?
    Atonement (2007) - Synopsis: Briony Tallis falsely accuses her sister's lover, Robbie, of a crime, after she catches them in a compromising position.
    From the award-winning director of Pride and Prejudice (Joe Wright) comes a stunning, critically acclaimed epic story of love. I think Joe Wright has a thing for blue eyes : Saoirse Ronan (Hanna, Atonement), James McAvoy (Atonement), Aaron Taylor Johnson (Anna Karenina). And also, hand gestures -- dance scene in Anna Karenina is very apparent.

    also, I remember in an interview where Carey Mulligan was asked what was the best acting of the decade (2000's) for her, she said Saoirse Ronan in Atonement. To be recognized in a film where you are the supporting character yet a very crucial and pivotal role and in a decade where masterful performances are seen, it's great that somebody as great of an actor as Carey Mulligan recognized Saoirse's acting in Atonement.

      The older I’ve gotten then more I realize that her character actually propagates in everyone. I fell under a similar set of circumstantial evidences that caused me to be arrested. I couldn’t understand how multiple unrelated people, from accuser, to investigator, to reporter, could all make their own wildly untrue statements based on a loose interpretation of the facts they observed. For over a year, as things headed toward trial, I concluded that these people were somehow evil like this girl, but I don’t think that now. I think everyone interprets the things they don’t understand with a deeper meaning than is merited. So just as my accusers thought I was conspiring to be a mass murderer, I thought they were conspiring to pluck me away from my comfortable pedestal. The truth is so much less exciting, but at least it’s true. At least for my part, I tried to be patient and understand why they thought the things they thought about me. I could have easily been just as irrational and come after them with defamation and other lawsuits just to end up gaining nothing by taking away from others. The real atonement wasn’t about paying for your own sins, or making things balanced again, but instead paying for sins you never committed, and taking it in stride, the way Robbie could have by forgiving Briony.

    I sympathized at with young Briony at first, as she obviously didn't understand what she saw and genuinely thought Robby was hurting her sister, but when it was revealed that she saw Paul's face clear as day with Lola, everything got so much deeper. Such an amazing actress

    • @idab9958
      @idab9958 3 месяца назад +11

      Memories can be unreliable, especially traumatic ones, and Briony only saw Paul for a split second. My interpretation is that she fooled herself into believing it was Robbie, because she already believed he was dangerous and it made more sense to her childish imagination, and suppressed the real memory until she grew up and realised she had to stop lying to herself.
